Accounting for borehole damage in analytical modelling of explosively generated stress waves is important for predicting the finer details of the stress wave patterns observed in the field. The classical Sharpe's [19421 concept of an effective borehole larger than the initial borehole diameter has been widely accepted to explain material damage around a borehole. A new analytical model based on dynamic compaction is advanced to predict far-field stress wave patterns. This model supports field data corresponding to reduced frequency of oscillations and increased damping. The present model recovers the earlier result when compaction around the borehole representing borehole damage is ignored.

Mine haul road design at Bougainville Copper Limited has undergone significant changes since mine start-up. Selection of 95 tonne trucks and the subsequent replacement by 155 tonne units is discussed, with particular reference to haul conditions within the mine. Changes to haul road design and construction practices are detailed which have lead to improved standards and tyre life. INTRODUCTION Bougainville Copper Limited operates one of the largest copper mines in the world at Panguna, Bougainville Island, in the North Solomons group of Papua New Guinea. The mine commenced commercial operation in April, 1972 and current planned production is 198 000 tonnes of material per day, of which 115 000 tonnes is ore averaging 0.46% copper. Annual total planned production is 72 000 000 tonnes to yield approximately 150 000 tonnes of copper with significant quantities of gold and silver. The mine operations workforce now consists of national employees up to General Foreman level.

The removal of nickel from lead by sulfur drossing was investigated using a technique which models industrial batch decoppering practice. Successful denickeling to 0.005% (Ni)pb was consistently obtained in the absence of silver, well below the experimental equilibrium value of 0.015% but still above levels obtained in industrial practice. Silver appeared to have little effect upon denickeling. The final nickel content was dependent upon the initial nickel content, the total sulfur addition and the stirring time. The presence of nickel was found to give no assistance to successful decoppering. Simul- taneous removal of nickel and copper was observed at silver contents in excess of 0.02%. Extended stirring resulted in a further lowering of the nickel content but reversion of copper to the bullion was observed. Experimental work has shown that nickel can be removed by a standard decoppering operation; a procedure which is used in secondary lead re- fining. Alternatively nickel can be removed during initial decoppering in primary lead re- fining operations.

Conditional simulation is a branch of geo- statistics which allows the simulation of a mineral deposit so that predictions can be made about the variability of some particular parameter of the deposit. A summary of the general principles, advantages and limitations of conditional simulation is presented together with an example based on coal seam thickness.

The La Colorada underground mine in Zacatecas, Mexico is a mechanised cut-and-fill silver mine with a capacity of 1250 t/d. The project focused on training the mine’s experienced operators for a fleet of underground trucks, through the use of a training simulator. The project was run by the simulator vendor, in collaboration with the mine’s maintenance, safety and production management.A training program was created targeting maintenance reduction, productivity improvement and increased utilisation and availability. Operators were first acclimatised to the simulated environment, had their current performance baselined, then received targeted coaching, with the process repeated to reinforce learnings. Concurrently, production, maintenance, and safety data was being measured in the real world to measure skills transfer. Due to limited telemetry available from the equipment, many of the data points for the project were sourced from maintenance logs, and accounting data.Equipment failure data measured from unscheduled maintenance records showed an overall 6.5 per cent decrease in unscheduled maintenance following the implementation of the training program. This rate of reduction correlated with the significant decrease in equipment abuse behaviours measured within the simulator during this period. Additionally, overall maintenance activities showed a significant decrease, confirming that reductions in unscheduled maintenance were not achieved through increases in scheduled maintenance. The reduction in equipment damage also increased availability and utilisation of the truck fleet. This highlights that the maintenance improvements not only reduced maintenance costs, but made the fleet available for more production. Moreover, the variability of the operator performance was decreased by 86 per cent, and the difference between their best operator and the worst is less than the baseline; this showed a gap where machine abuse, productivity and cost are impacted directly.This project illustrated that even small-scale mining operations with an experienced operator workforce can achieve positive return on investment (ROI) from simulation-based training. The use of coal as a fuel for heat and power generation has a long history. During the nineteenth century most of the present combus- tion technologies were pioneered, as shown in Table 1, This period was associated with the "golden age" of coal and its contribution of almost 80% of the world's energy demands in the early,1900s . The decline in the use of coal has been due to the transfer of the heavy transportation area to diesel power, the elimination of coal as a household fuel and the substitution of oil for coal in power plants. Coal remains the major fuel for the electric utility industry and the present paper will be concerned primarily with that application. Table 1 outlines the development of coal tech- nology with the parallel understanding of coal as a material and its behaviour during combus- tion. Clearly many developments in combustion technology have occurred in this century, although most of the processes had been invented in the nineteenth century. Also, the great expanse in coal research of the past few decades has led to a greater understanding of the coal combustion process.

The Greenhouse Effect, with its potential for global warming, is strongly linked to industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Global carbon mass balances indicate that absorption in sea water is the major natural sink of carbon dioxide. However the surface waters of the oceans are close to chemical equilibrium with the atmosphere with respect to carbon dioxide, while the deep ocean waters are not. Consequently, the transfer of carbon dioxide from the surface limits the rate at which the oceans can absorb carbon dioxide. It is proposed that direct transfer of carbon dioxide from industrial installations to deep ocean waters be evaluated as an interim measure to slow the rate of increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and hence allow time for the development of sustainable industrial practices. As an aid to thinking on the development of suitable technology, equilibrium calculations are presented which demonstrate that sea water in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve six times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. Sea water saturated with calcium carbonate and in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve 20 times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. However the absolute concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide are still very small.

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. I am very grateful to have the honor of delivering this Key- note Speech to all of you here today, to the Chairman Mr Cope- man, and to all the organisers. As you heard, I was mainly involved for a very long time in the purchase of iron and steel raw materials for Nippon Steel Corporation. Today, however, I would like to talk to you about a much wider issue, namely, how the Japanese steel industry is going to change towards the 21st Century, and what will be the main technical innovations and trends behind those changes. I will also mention the effect that the changes are likely to have on the procurement of raw Materials.

Silica-Kaolin Sand Wet Sizing The Bulgarian deposits of silica-kaolin sand are localised in the eastern part of the Danube plain. After wet separation the raw material yields two products - washed kaolin (different grades) and silica sand (different grades). The water washing technology includes: disintegration; spiral classification; hydrocyclone classification and dewatering of kaolin grades; hydroclassification; sizing using drum screens and dewatering of silica sand grades. Research and development program has started to improve the silica-kaolin sand separation in processing plants. Based on the raw material and tails characterisation data and the preliminary experiments using Derrick Stacksizer screening machines a silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology was developed. The full-scale pilot flowsheet includes the following units: Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.43 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 500 mm Flat bottom Hydrocyclone; Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.150 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 100 mm Hydrocyclone and Derrick Dual Motor Linear Motion Machine equipped with 0.064 mm opening Derrick Pyramid Panel. The pilot-test data clearly demonstrate that the new silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology is suitable for Bulgarian silica-kaolin raw material. There are possibilities to increase the silica sand recovery increasing the production of silica sand grade PK 0.16 and starting the production a new grade PK 0.10.

An electron probe micro-analyser, controlled by a dedicated mini-computer,has been operating at Imperial College since 1970. The data assessment capability of the computer was limited and, in order to make better use of the information produced by the analyser, extra computing facilities were needed. Following the initiation of a Laboratory Automation Project at Imperial College involving the use of a central computer linked to laboratory type computers and to further more powerful systems,it became possible to carry out much more detailed and extensive mineralogical analyses by connecting the mini -computer to the Laboratory Automation Network. The paper describes the techniques employed including hardware, software, inter- connection, analysis and operating methods.

Froth structure and stability are known to play important roles in determining mineral flotation recovery and selectivity. However, measuring froth stability in a consistent manner remains a significant challenge, especially at an industrial scale. Following preliminary tests on a copper concentration plant, a quantitative dynamic stability measure is investigated in this study in order to extend the results over a wider range of conditions and on a different orebody. The technique is based on the Bikerman foam test and uses a non-overflowing froth column to quantify froth stability. Experiments were carried out using an automated version of the froth stability column under different operating conditions. Air flowrate was the key operating variable. Tests were reproduced on a single flotation cell of a Platinum Group Metals concentrator. The froth stability factor, , was measured for each operating condition, and compared with the air recovery in the cell, , which was measured using image analysis. The froth stability column results gave the same trends as image analysis. In particular the froth stability factor was found to be linearly related to the actual fraction of air overflowing the cell. The metallurgical results clearly indicated that changes in air flowrate result in variations in flotation performance that can be attributed to changes in froth stability. The results showed that high froth stability conditions occur at intermediate air flowrates, and result in improved flotation performance. It is found that the froth stability column is a simple, cost-effective and reliable method for quantifying froth stability, and for indicating changes in flotation performance.

Mining companies around the world are seeking methods to coordinate operations between the mine and the concentrator to achieve an overall improvement in enterprise performance. In several instances very significant increases in productivity (more than 20 per cent) and profitability (more than $US 10M per annum) have resulted from such efforts. The key to realising these large benefits has for the most part arisen from improved communication between mining operations and plant operations personnel and the judicious use of new tools to evaluate alternatives for improvement and to minimise the risk of implementation. This paper presents a systematic approach to mine-to-mill optimisation . The importance of systemic thinking and systems optimisation methodologies is emphasised. New tools for evaluating operational performance are discussed. Recently reported benefits are summarised. Finally current research is discussed and projections for the future are given.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

The application of conventional dust control systems in British Coal mines has considerably reduced the incidence of pneumoconiosis. A number of new techniques have been developed involving extraction close to the cutting heads of mining machines which will be capable of controlling airborne dust with the greater intensity of production necessary in the present economic climate.

Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

Off-gas handling systems are a critical component of modern metallurgical furnaces and typically represent as much as 50 per cent of the total installed smelter capital cost. Inadequate off-gas system performance, due to insufficient exhaust flow or excess maintenance downtime, can present a serious process bottleneck and limit smelter production rate. Therefore, it is essential that the relevant performance issues are fully understood and considered in the design of these systems, particularly when combustibles produced within the furnace must be combusted or handled in the off-gas system. This paper examines the requirements, design issues, and conceptual design process for state-of-the-art postcombustion off-gas systems. The relevant design considerations of safety, environment, energy consumption, and maintenance are presented, and the relative importance of these key issues are compared and discussed. The benefits of using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling in the design process at the conceptual design stage are also demonstrated. Finally, the design basis and performance of a recent Hatch-engineered system currently in operation is evaluated.

The DeGrussa copper-gold deposit is located 900 km North of Perth. Copper-gold bearing massive sulfide lenses occur in lower greenschist facies meta-sedimentary and mafic volcanics of the Bryah Basin. Regional folding, faulting, and tilting of the stratigraphy primarily occurred during the Capricorn Orogen (Johnson, 2013). The Shiraz Fault and Merlot Fault are regional oblique-sinistral faults that offset the DeGrussa massive sulfides lenses into three fault blocks by ~350 m and ~120 m, respectively. A network of deposit-scale brittle-ductile faults splay from, and in one example are cut by, the Shiraz and Merlot faults. This results in localised ore displacement, selvage alteration and degradation of the rock mass integrity. Historically, only the Shiraz and Merlot Faults were modelled and validated during mining and grade control. The requirement for a comprehensive structural model became more relevant as mining became advanced and confining stresses on local rock mass became more complicated. The DeGrussa Structural Model has been developed to delineate areas of structural complexity and is an important tool in mitigating rockfall risk through well informed technical design. During this process, every accessible excavation was walked and structurally mapped. New workflows in Leapfrog Geo and new technology, including an app that runs on mobile phones streamlined the validation process. Drill hole orientation was a limiting factor during validation. At the time of writing this submission, the DeGrussa Structural Model consists of 34 faults, and is now an important tool for the Technical Service team when developing mine plans and schedules. Applied structural geology is often seen as exclusive to those with a PhD in the field. Faults at DeGrussa have been modelled and reconciled by a Mine Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer, using first principles geological characterisation. This is a simple process that demonstrates any geologist can contribute to a structural model, provided they understand the fundamentals of unbiased structural measurements and consistent record of observation
