The mining sector, a notably energy-intensive industry worldwide, is a major consumer of fossil fuels, leading to significant carbon emissions globally. The move towards electrification, coupled with advancements in battery technology, has redirected focus from traditional diesel-powered solutions to battery-powered alternatives. This paper introduces a novel mining haulage system, termed the Battery Trolley system, and examines its theoretical foundations, configurations, and operational processes. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the system’s characteristics and limitations. Through a hypothetical road simulation, the study analyses various battery mining trucks, calculating energy consumption based on force parameters and tailoring battery sizes to contemporary materials and technology. When assessing various battery truck alternatives—considering aspects such as battery size, effective payload, duty cycle, energy efficiency, productivity, and single-shift production—a range of performance outcomes and characters become apparent within the mining context. The findings indicate that Battery Trolley configurations, requiring smaller battery capacities, entail lesser compromises on effective payload. Consequently, these configurations achieve a higher duty cycle, reduced energy consumption per tonne, heightened productivity, and enhanced singleshift production capabilities compared to Battery-only alternatives. The comparative analysis of Battery Trolley with stationary charging (BT-S) and Battery Trolley – dynamic charging (BT-D) underlines that battery Trolley systems are capable of overcoming the challenges associated with battery size, thus successfully fulfilling the production demands of large truck applications in mining. This positions Battery Trolley systems as a more advantageous option for the decarbonisation of mining fleets, underscoring their potential in contributing to the sector’s sustainable evolution.

Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. The presented technique is of great benefit to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of mining operations, and will have broad applications in fire prevention for large-scale coalmines.CITATION:Zhou, F, Shi, B, Li, Y and Ma, L, 2015. Over the past 20 years drum scrubbers have become a widely adopted technology within iron ore beneficiation plants. Generally, the drum scrubbers in use are considered high-capacity machines capable of accepting larger-sized feed material. Together with a water addition to a desired pulp density and a mild energy input, these large rotating machines effect an attritioning action that removes water soluble clays and other deleterious materials. Within the Western Australian iron ore industry, drum scrubbers have been successfully applied to Channel Iron, Marra Mamba, Bedded and Detrital orebodies. The introduction of drum scrubbers has enabled Western Australian producers to satisfy the substantial increase in demand for iron ore from Chinese steelmakers by making the lower-grade sections of the above orebodies economic. However, despite being a relatively simple unit process, the requirements for successful design and operation of these machines are not fully understood. This paper draws on the collective experience of both authors to provide some points to consider for incorporating drum scrubbers into iron ore beneficiation plant flow sheets.

The South Deep massive orebody consists of 20 to 30 in of payable conglomerates ranging in dip from 11¦ to 20¦ and at depths of between 2400 in and 34(10 in. The mine design process selected a mining method with a proven record of application that could be adapted to overcome the inherent difficulties associated with the depth, thickness and structural influences of the South Deep orebody. A modified cut and fill mining method provides a concentrated and highly flexible method of extraction. An integrated destressing cut will enable the modification of the stress environment such that it is suitable for massive mining operations. The choice of backfill type and stoping width in the destressing cut ultimately determines the characteristics of the stress modification and, as such, is critical to the success of the cut and fill operation. This paper discusses the decision process undertaken to determine the optimum backfill type and stoping width combination in terms of, conditions in the destressing cut faces and in the massive mining environment. Numerical modelling has been extensively used to analyse arious scenarios to aid in the decision process.

The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will include 2.1 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels, 500 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and tunnel portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek, which is incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The resulting topography, geology and hydrogeology of the tunnel alignment are complex.The Assessment of Effects required estimation of the likely settlements resulting from the tunnel construction and assessment of their effects on the buildings, services and other features. A conservative approach was taken when estimating settlements in order to provide an upper bound estimate of the consequent effects. There are three sources of these settlements: mechanical settlement from the tunnel excavation, mechanical settlement from the displacement of retaining walls and consolidation settlement from the groundwater drawdowns during construction and, in some cases, in the long-term.The settlements from these sources were calculated independently and then combined to identify the most critical effects. These combined settlements were used to assess the potential damage to the buildings, services and other features above and around the tunnels. The combined settlement results generally followed the anticipated trough shape centred on the underlying tunnel but with some noticeable effects relating to the underlying geology and hydrogeology.The effects on buildings were typically assessed as negligible with some areas of very slight to moderate damage predicted. Effects on services are anticipated to be minor but some large and older pipes will require specific monitoring during construction. A monitoring programme is proposed to allow the actual settlement and effects to be compared to those estimated with appropriate responses should those effects significantly differ.This paper describes the methods used to calculate and combine the settlements and assess their effects.

Safescape Laddertube provides an improved system for emergency egress in ventilation shafts. The addition of Laddertube in a rise has very little impact on ventilation flow, studies have indicated that the difference in flow velocities are difficult to measure due to the minimal impact. Due to the size and open-ended nature of Laddertube, the air velocity inside and out of the Laddertube is mostly linear. Laddertube can be used either permanently or during an emergency as a secondary ventilation duct. One project involved a 385 m ladder installed in a surface return air raise that could be made to bypass the primary circuit and supply fresh air to a sea container fresh air base at the bottom of the raise. Laddertube has been designed to be installed to any feasible length and can be fitted with a climb assist system ensuring enhanced speed and reduced fatigue during ascent. The climb assist used in association with Laddertube is a Tractelift system which applies a weight relief of up to 36 kg off the climber’s body weight when using the ladder. This system has successfully been tested for ladders up to 600 m in length and is currently in use for a ladder of 185 m length. The use of refuge chambers in underground coalmines has long been a contentious issue due to the concern that while it may provide temporary shelter, the risk of being exposed to high heat or the inability for rescuers to access them due to fire or explosive atmosphere means that they may be effectively trapped. The additional application for coal environments includes Laddertube installed alongside a refuge chamber concealed behind a blast proof door ensuring a secondary means of emergency egress. In certain operations designs may allow for this chamber to be provided withpositive pressure fresh air.

Al2O3 in natural iron ores generally occurs in goethite, kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and iron carbonate. When the content of alumina in sinter increases from 1.11 per cent to 3.50 per cent, the reducibility of sinter decreases with the addition of four different types of alumina. When gibbsite and kaolinite are added, the low temperature reduction disintegration (RDI+3.15 mm) of sinter increases with the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Furthermore, when adding pure reagent alumina, the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent will increase the RDI+3.15 mm of sinter. The addition of ferric oxide–alumina spinel with the Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent, also increases the RDI+ 3.15 mm of sinter. The influence difference is results from the change of the mineral composition and microstructure of sinter because of the occurrence state of Al2O3. Under the condition that Al2O3 content of sinter is 2 per cent, the porosity of sinter with kaolinite is 37.26 per cent, and the shape is irregular. When gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, the porosity of sinter is about 16 per cent, and the pores are round. When pure reagent alumina is added, the porosity of sinter is 17.49 per cent, and the pores are regular and small. When kaolinite, gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, platy calcium ferrite is mainly formed in the sinter, and some of it is columnar calcium ferrite. On the other hand, when pure reagent alumina is added, in addition to platy columnar calcium ferrite, acicular calcium ferrite is also formed in the sinter.

Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authorsÆ personal observations and experience.

FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. Spotted Quoll is a massive sulfide nickel deposit located in the Forrestania greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn block in Western Australia. Discovered in October 2007, mining has progressed from open pit to underground and currently uses longhole open stoping with paste fill as the primary stoping method. Immediately prior to 2019, the Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) was defined by a single grade domain of nickel greater than or equal to 0.8 per cent, irrespective of the host lithology, a legacy of the original ore wireframe being built using explicit methods. While a number of obvious structural offsets were honoured in this nickel grade domain, only one modelled fault was used to undertake domaining of arsenic. From 2019 onwards, implicit modelling in Leapfrog Geo™ was used to construct a mine-scale geological model, which triggered the definition of a high-grade core of massive/matrix nickel sulfides surrounded by a low-grade halo of stringer/disseminated nickel sulfides in the surrounding rock. As part of the evolution of the geological model and with the aid of Seequent Central™ to allow collaboration between site-based mine geologists, Perth-based resource geologists and Melbourne-based consultants, a detailed review of the structural mapping was carried out as additional information from underground development became available. This allowed numerous faults and shears to be identified – particularly in the lower half of the mine. These were used to define further structural domains and to refine the understanding of the nickel and arsenic grade distributions in the mineralised envelope. The increased definition to the domains provided by the geological model resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the Mineral Resource estimate, as measured by reconciliation using voids of the mined stopes determined from the cavity monitoring survey (CMS).

Mining project developers are committed to taking on all the challenges and obligations of financial risk management. It is interesting that our current models of project finance have not changed markedly in principle for some 700 years, yet the rules which prepare the way for effective project assessment and subsequent loan management still do not seem to be well understood by project or corporate developers. Probability and gravity fill the opposing trays of the golden balance of financial risk. Understanding the relationship between these opposing, but intimately related elements is critically important for successful risk management. It is important to move beyond the qualitative approach and use quantitative methodologies to measure the financial impact of the occurrence of each major risk. We live in a world where the only constant is change and thus it is not surprising that a bankerÆs life is still governed by assessing, measuring and pricing risk. Banks are attracted to funding well managed companies with strong cash flow projects. But we are more risk averse compared with the credit appetites of late last century. This attitudinal shift has resulted in tougher term sheets for the early 21st century, encompassing more conditions, warranties, undertakings and stronger cash sweep provisions. Banks require well balanced portfolios to achieve an acceptable spread of risk, thus there is a more restricted market for small company lending than that available to large multi-project corporate entities with less concentrated risk profiles. Because of this focus, junior company debt finance remains comparatively expensive and especially so for more challenging geographical and political environments.

The structural models developed by exploration and mining geologists are most commonly concerned with the ‘main structures’ or key constituents that pertain to the associated mineralisation. To this end, it is recognised that the geological and exploration models, which are developed, are essentially ‘fit for task’ and the scale-related variances are not always realised at an early stage. In fact, in many cases anomalous intercepts along different trends and of variable apparent continuity have often been neglected as ‘back scatter’ and not important. Recognition of the importance of subordinate structures as mineralising hosts suggests that additional opportunities exist outside the primary and main structures. History shows that opportunities are often not realised where gold is hosted in orientations not parallel to the predominant trend of the schistosity, main fault or shear zone.Another reason for the importance of subordinate structures can be understood from their roles in a percolation network. Subordinate structures can access the large fluid fluxes provided by backbone elements, but, as dangling elements, they provide greater opportunities for gold precipitation mechanisms and hence may constitute essential parts of the resource. Therefore, the role, understanding and consideration of the smaller-scale and orthogonal structures should be considered during all facets of exploration, resource development, delineation and mining.

"The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV). Additionally, the cost benefits of preparing an early-stage geometallurgy model were quantified through a comparison to a conventional model that was based on test work averages.CITATION:King, G S and Macdonald, J L, 2016. In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. An alternative stoping method has been adopted for narrow vein stoping at the Tasmania Mine in Northern Tasmania. Colloquially described as ‘Radial-in-Reef’ (RiR) stoping, the method employs the drilling of radial rings in the plane of the Reef from a drill stub located at the geographic centre of the proposed stope panel.Production from the Western Zone of the Tasmania Reef has been undertaken remotely from the Reef since 2007, after a detailed geotechnical engineering analysis indicated that the integrity of the sill drives could not guarantee an acceptable level of confidence should an anticipated seismic event occur within a radius of 10 m. The key tenet of the remote mining approach was the exclusion of personnel from sill drives once stoping had commenced. The remote mining method had to be ‘retrofitted’ to four existing stoping blocks totalling 11 sill drives which totalled 160 m vertically. The remote mining method proved to be complex, cumbersome and very expensive. However, the ore was extracted successfully.By early 2010, previously developed ore had largely been exhausted and the future development with an orebody open at depth presented the opportunity to review the current extraction method. However, the new extraction method needed to maintain the tenet of excluding personnel from sill drives of active stoping blocks, but seek opportunities to reduce the difficult and costly aspects of the previous method. The new ‘Radial-in-Reef’ stoping reduced the development requirement from six to two drives per ore block. Cost implications aside, the significant reduction in prestoping extraction ratio was expected to also reduce the likelihood of seismicity. Transverse production rings were designed to be drilled radially from a drill stub mined from a mid-stope footwall drive. Stopes totalling up to 7000 tonnes were planned be fired in a single electronic blast. Extraction was designed to take place from a basal sill drive under teleremote operation. At the time of writing, the method was under trial.

Qualitative risk assessment methods are not well suited to considering complex systems and potential interactions of new technology. As part of supporting tier one mining organisations and international industry groups, the author and colleagues have innovated processes to help provide better solutions to sites/companies considering a move to implementing proximity detection and collision avoidance systems. The process identifies required operating states for the system. By applying a combination of research and team-based analyses, a rigorous identification of credible failure modes which could cause these states to be lost, is identified. Finally, required business inputs, expressed in practical terms are distilled from regulator, industry, organisation and site in a way which clearly addresses the failure modes and so retain the required operating states. These business inputs identify improvements for site arrangements (EMESRT levels 1 to 7) before identifying functional requirements for technological collision avoidance solutions (levels 8 for advisory and 9 for autonomous). The paper presents a case study synthesised from multiple sites analyses and will provide guidance on where to find additional resources to assist in making the best possible transition to better equipment and road network solutions.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 50 kilometres south of Charters Towers and 134km south-west of Townsville. The resource was discovered in 1983 and first open pit gold production began in 1986. The mine traditionally employed a bottom-up sequence – a combination of modified and traditional Avoca methods with run-of-mine waste backfill. This practice caused many high-grade crown pillars to be left in place, yet accessible. In recent years, these crown pillars have been extracted by injection grouting of rockfill. This process facilitated blind up-hole open stoping. To date, thirteen separate injection campaigns have been completed, of which ten were deemed successful. In general, the two key technical difficulties in this mining technique are: maintaining a consistent high-quality ground consolidation of the rock fill material; and controlling the drill and blast practices during stoping. Here, effective drill-and-blast control was found to be essential to achieve the dual aims of 100% extraction, and maximum sill pillar stability to minimise dilution. During stoping, the technical performance of the consolidated rock-fill was recorded; both to verify the design, and to identify operational improvements. The results showed that Pajingo has realised both reduced production down-time through use of early strength gain grout, and more rapid and thorough grout consolidation through changes to the emplacement method. The optimisation of consolidated rock fill has led to several quantifiable benefits to the mine, including: profitable extraction of previously sterilised crown pillars resulting in both increased ore reserves and production profile; improvements to the stability of grouted stope crowns, thereby reducing safety and production related; risks associated with open up-hole stopes; reduction in cost and time constraints, with respect to the grouting of loose fill; and reduction in grout curing time – from 14 days to 8 days – thereby minimising production down-time. This paper is a case study of the evolution and optimisation of the up-hole open stoping mining method at Pajingo. The challenges and successes are discussed in terms of their key mining outcomes. Gas in U.S. coals is primarily composed of 90 to 99 percent methane and up to 10 per- cent carbon dioxide. In composition and heat- ing value, this coal-bed gas is similar to natural gas and can be introduced directly into commercial pipelines after standard condition- ing. The high permeability cleat system in the virgin coal can be exploited in order to drain the coal gas well in advance of mining. Two premining drainage methods have been extensive- ly evaluated in the U.S.; they are 1) horizon- tal boreholes collared from within the mine, and 2) vertical drilling from the surface with fracturing. Limited-size fracture treatments are advocated in order to prevent potential roof damage and the need for added support. An engineering approach to predicting gas flow for different drainage techniques near mining locations is presented. Results can be used in design, i.e. pipeline, compressor.
