To maintain copper recoveries and maximise production at the Sepon Copper Operation it is crucial to control the amount of copper entering the leaching circuit. This requires close control of blending of the multiple ROM stockpiles to achieve the desired head grade. Grade variability in the ROM stockpiles can lead to significant variation in the processing plant copper feed grade.Head grade sampling from the milling circuit at Sepon is complicated due to milling in leach solution to preserve the water balance. Copper is present in both liquid and solid forms and copper in the added milling solution has to be accounted for. This leads to difficulties in manual head sampling which also introduces delays due to sample preparation and assay turnaround. On-stream analysis is complex because of the solution and solid copper and the need to account for recycled copper solution.This paper describes the complexity of feed grade management at Sepon and the application of on-belt analyser technology to assist in the control of copper metal throughput.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Other considerations such as the ability to acquire permits through the carbon farming initiative or through overseas clean development mechanism projects are explained.CITATION:Allen, M and Holt, P, 2012. Although rock strength anisotropy is a well-known phenomenon in rock mechanics, its impact on geotechnical design is often ignored. No widely accepted guideline currently exists for its characterisation. Anisotropy can significantly control the failure mechanism and progression of damage into the rock mass, particularly in high-stress conditions. As such, it can play a key role in the stability of underground excavations and subsequent geotechnical design.This paper introduces the concept of anisotropy at both intact and rock mass scales. It then presents guidelines for measuring anisotropy and assigning rock mass strength properties. An improved unified constitutive model (IUCM), which can account for more complex failure mechanisms, is then briefly described. This IUCM is used to better understand the typical responses of anisotropic rocks to underground mining and to develop an improved damage classification scheme for these conditions.The application of conventional design methods in anisotropic conditions is shown to lead to significant errors. The relatively new field of geo-metallurgy promises to improve the predictability of mill feed quality and enhance processing outcomes. However, it is subject to the same limitations as the prediction of grade using geostatistics and has additional limitations due to the spatial distribution of the variations being measured and the sample sizes required. Schedules based on geo-metallurgical models will, in turn, be subject to variations arising from geological control and practical mining constraints.This paper discusses the key drivers of variations in mill feed quality and quantity from a mining perspective. It concludes that geo-metallurgical modelling addresses only one aspect of the problem. A case study is provided to illustrate poor predictability of metallurgical performance even with very detailed geological data.

This paper outlines an approach to high solids slurry pipeline design with data generated from a closed pipe-loop test system. The pressure and flow rate data generated is used to develop a pseudo-shear diagram for the purposes of system design. Following this approach enables the design of a full pipe flow system maximising system life and reliability. The alternative free fall system is explained and the disadvantages highlighted.Environmental and social considerations are discussed; mainly water and land use, and how designing for high solids slurry pipeline systems can be used improve these aspects of a mining project.Also discussed is how the use of high solids slurry pipeline systems can help to mitigate the risk associated with surface tailings storage facility failure, with the Bulyanhulu project used as a positive example.

Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

Fimiston Open Pit is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Over 110 years of underground mining resulted in the development of nearly 3500 km of underground workings including backfilled and open stopes up to half a million tonnes in size. These voids significantly complicate blasting processes at KCGM, influencing blast movement direction and magnitude. Blast movement monitoring to improve mine reconciliations was identified as an improvement project in the business plan for the geology team in 2008. Following successful trials in 2008 to 2009, blast monitoring and translation of ore blocks were implemented as a permanent grade control program from late 2009 and is now part of the Management Operating System (MOS) of the mine. This paper presents a summary of results from the Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM®) data collected to date. Ore blocks at KCGM are translated primarily using BMM® data. This data is obtained from the BMM® system which measures the movement of a radio transmitter installed in a blast pattern from a preblast position to a post-blast position. The application of the data collected by the BMM® tends to be both mine site and blast specific. At KCGM, an average distance obtained from the BMM® data within a given shot is the primary method used for translation. In the case that BMM® data is unavailable, a theoretical movement vector established from Orica Shotplus with distances gained from the historical BMM® database is used. Data is presented in an ore loss and dilution exercise for a bench undertaken at KCGM to understand the potential effects on reconciliations. Improvements that have flowed from implementing blast monitoring include improved reconciliations when combined with other grade control improvement projects. The increase in liaison between the geology and blast personnel at KCGM has been a significant improvement gained from the implementation of the blast monitoring program. This has allowed a better understanding of blast movement and the effects on ore dilution and ore loss by the mine geology team. In addition, the discussion of blasting tie-in plans between geology and blasting personnel has been improved which leads to more favourable blasting practices that take ore movement into account.

A coal dust explosion is one of the most significant risks in the harsh and complex environment of an Underground Coal Mine (UCM). Reviewing literature, regulations and existing systems surrounding explosive dust management shows that there have been few advancements in managing this risk over the past 90 years. Legislation has remained relatively stagnant and minimal systems are implemented in the real world that can simplify, standardise and improve the effectiveness of UCM explosive dust management. To help bridge this gap, Corehesion, in collaboration with an UCM has designed, developed and implement an Explosive Dust Risk Mitigation System (EDRMS) utilising components of Business Intelligence (BI) that is capable of real-world use in industry. To do this the existing explosive dust management process at the associated research mine was evaluated to form high-level and detailed design requirements, focusing on digitally simplifying the procedure, not replicating it. The system was then iteratively and incrementally developed and implemented at the research mine to commence real-world use. The developed BI platform is compared with the existing process to highlight the advancements in performance transparency, efficiency and optimisation of UCM explosion mitigation. This comparison and evaluation of the real-world system implementation at the research mine demonstrate its success in automating procedure steps, providing a readily accessible source of data and enabling a proactive approach to planning and managing explosion risk mitigation. In addition to improvements just for the research mine, this EDRMS created directly address many Queensland regulatory audit findings. By finalising the total system and making the highlighted changes for standardisation, this BI system will have the adaptable capabilities for implementation across the UCM industry. As accurate data availability improves at UCMs, further work can be done to improve the systems’ optimisation techniques and integration of other risks.

Upstream Classifier are well-known in the iron ore industry for at least 15 years. At present, more than 60 units are in operation in Western Australia. The advantage of this technology is their capability to produce three products with one equipment – iron ore concentrate, iron ore middlings for further processing and slimes (tailings). The principal of this beneficiation process – upstream classification and upstream separation – will always remain. However, the optimisation of the classification and separation efficiency of the equipment itself is a continuous process driven by enhanced automation and instrumentation, design changes and the use of upstream and downstream information and requirements. Besides efficiency, the safety, maintenance and replacement conditions are very important subjects for the operation of an iron ore mine. The aim of this paper is to present a new allflux® upstream classifier design, which has been developed together with several iron ore producer from Western Australia. The new design benefits from its sustainability approach by dividing the entire equipment into small reusable parts. As a result, maintenance is minor, replacement much faster, lifetime much longer and costs much lower. Furthermore, it demonstrates new features to prevent hazardous working conditions such as confined space as well as new fixing devices to speed up the replacement of certain items and parts.

Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. High priority areas were identified and targeted to allow continued development and a successful rapid ramp up to full production.CITATION:Sandery, L and Light, S, 2014. The Globe-Progress Mine is an open pit gold mine that is part of the larger Reefton Goldfields deposit located on the West Coast of New Zealand. The regional geology comprises a series of north to south oriented fold structures that have undergone post-deformation mineralisation. The structural geology within the mine itself is more complex, with major shears hosting numerous high-grade mineralised quartz shoots and splays that have been historically mined.The selective mining of ore within the pit is challenging due to the orientations of the hanging wall and footwall areas of the main Globe shear zone, the lithologies of these areas which range from highly brecciated and sheared material to competent mineralised host rock, and in the hazards presented by the numerous old historic underground workings. The coordination of drilling, modelling and excavation of the ore requires careful planning to maximise recovery whilst operating with the pit design boundaries.Grade control packages are custom designed to reflect the orientation of the footwall and hanging wall mineralisation. The shear material in the footwall zone dips between 60° and 70° and requires angled drilling whereas the footwall mineralisation is contained in shallow dipping quartz veins sub parallel to bedding and can be vertically drilled to best intercept the mineralisation. Ore excavation is directed so that the contact between the footwall and hanging wall is mined in the correct direction so that any non-visual ore contacts can be safely mined and that the ore-waste dilution is reduced.The ongoing grade control and selective mining of the Globe Progress deposit continues to deliver high grade ore for processing by ensuring that waste and dilution of ore is reduced and that recovery is maximised.

The preliminary modifying factors for future stope design in the Southern Mine Area of Olympic Dam consisted of only a single, arbitrary value of Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Sloughing (ELOS). In order to improve this, a study was conducted which developed a more comprehensive methodology for assigning ELOS, Equivalent Linear Lost Ore (ELLO) and Equivalent Linear Fill Overbreak (ELFO) to individual stope faces based on geotechnical and mining parameters. The approach used was to look at the simple cases, which were classed as vertical stope walls in good ground (RQD 80-100%), divided into wall orientations (North, South, East, West). The stope walls were also split based on the blasting practice used (toeing, parallel or a combination of the two). The expected ELOS and ELLO from these ‘base cases’ are then modified by parameters which have historically been found to affect stope performance (Hydraulic Radius and Q’). The size of the effect found in the historical data determines the ELOS / ELLO applied. The methodology was summarised in an easy to use flow chart and was applied to all of the proposed stope shapes for the Southern Mine Area and summarised per mining block. This allowed each iteration of the mine plan to be assessed in terms of overbreak (both rock and vertical fill exposures) and underbreak.

"The high rate of failure of new mine developments to meet feasibility study expectations has been the subject of many fine technical papers. Yet failure rates remain stubbornly high.Similarly, the common occurrence of disastrous acquisitions resulting from failed due diligence on projects is well known. Yet such mistakes continue to be made.The authors argue that project and due diligence failure are caused at least partly by cognitive biases. These biases pervade decision-making throughout project evaluations.A wider understanding of these biases (and their effects) is necessary. Only then can mitigating actions be taken.The opportunity for this wider understanding exists. A number of best-selling books have been published on the topic in recent years. With wider understanding of key concepts and terms, cognitive biases can be recognised and discussed. They can also be challenged and mitigated.The authors believe that these concepts should be entry-level, required knowledge for anyone evaluating, developing, reviewing or financing mining projects.Perhaps the most prevalent biases in project evaluation failure are the ‘over-optimism’ biases. In particular, the planning fallacy and confirmation bias.The anchoring effect is also pervasive. This bias propagates unrealistic assumptions from scoping and prefeasibility studies through to so-called definitive feasibility studies. Unrecognised anchoring biases also undermine the validity of many ‘independent’ due diligence reviews. They are also prevalent in corporate acquisitions.The availability heuristic refers to a mental shortcut that can lead to a number of biases. One of these is the narrative fallacy. The mind constructs coherent narratives and opinions, regardless of the amount and quality of the information that support them. Narrative fallacy commonly occurs in the evaluation of social and political risk. Another is disaster neglect, which is especially common in the failure to assess risks associated with tailings management.This paper outlines the relevance of these biases to mine project evaluations. In 2003, Anglo Platinum, in a joint development with Xstrata Technology, installed the world’s first 10 000 litre IsaMillTM in a concentrate regrind duty at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment Plant. The success of that installation was the enabling event for Anglo Platinum to proceed with a substantial investment in horizontal stirred milling technology. Since 2006 an additional three IsaMillsTM in concentrate regrind duties and a further 18 IsaMillsTM in the more technically challenging coarse grinding mainstream applications, have been commissioned in group Concentrator operations - bringing the total number of IsaMillsTM installed in Anglo Platinum plants to 22.A collaborative approach between Anglo Platinum and Xstrata Technology towards improving milling efficiency and reducing operating costs, through internal mill component wear optimization and operating recipe development, has resulted in further improvements in the overall success of IsaMillsTM in the flow sheets of many Anglo Platinum operations. The addition of IsaMillsTM in the Anglo Platinum flow sheets has improved plant PGM recoveries by as much as 5%.This paper explores the improvements made to the IsaMillsTM flow sheet and mill internal design and shares some of the operating experience with IsaMillsTM technology in Anglo Platinum

The Iluka Resources Ltd Jacinth-Ambrosia heavy mineral sand mine (South Australia) is located in an undisturbed semi-arid landscape consisting of sparse trees, shrubs and grasses. The soil interspaces are covered with biocrusts, a living soil cover also found worldwide in arid regions. Biocrusts are composed of lichens, cyanobacteria, algae, mosses, liverworts, fungi and bacteria, and live on and within the first few millimetres of the soil surface. Biocrust organisms bind soil particles, sequester carbon and many fix atmospheric nitrogen making them important structural and functional components of ecosystems. Despite their important role in ecological processes, biocrusts are susceptible to disturbance; nevertheless they can recover provided sufficient inoculum is present. Cyanobacteria are the early colonisers and they capture atmospheric and landscape resources and establish conditions that subsequent successional seres can capitalise on. Research conducted in countries including China, Spain and South Africa has been focused on methods to either encourage rapid regeneration of cyanobacterial remnants or to introduce new material from cultured cyanobacteria. We have been investigating the extent and diversity of biocrusts across the 4500 ha mine lease and their potential to improve mining rehabilitation outcomes. Approximately 46 per cent of the soil surfaces are colonised with biocrusts and 33 taxa have been identified. Laboratory experiments were designed to mimic massive soil disturbance and treated with a range of water qualities. Within 22 days, treatments irrigated with fresh water were colonised by new cyanobacterial filaments with a mean surface coverage of 65 per cent. Secondary tests revealed that differences in the photosynthetic yield of the crust were dependent on the salinity levels of the irrigation water used. In 2011 this program is expanding from the laboratory into field scale trials designed to assess both the potential and practicalities of up scaling these techniques to provide crushed biocrusts and cyanobacterial bio-inoculum for use in mine rehabilitation.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques can provide a useful tool to aid drill and blast engineers in open cut mining. By avoiding time consuming tasks such as scan-lines and rock sample collection for laboratory tests, MWD techniques can not only save time but also improve the reliability of the blast design by providing the drill and blast engineer with the information specially tailored for use. While most mines use a standard blast pattern and charge per blasthole, based on a single rock factor for the entire bench or blast region, information derived from the MWD parameters can improve the blast design by providing more accurate rock properties for each individual blasthole. From this, decisions can be made on the most appropriate type and amount of explosive charge to place in a per blasthole or to optimise the inter-hole timing detonation time of different decks and blastholes. Where real-time calculations are feasible, the system could extend the present blast design even be used to determine the placement of subsequent holes towards a more appropriate blasthole pattern design like asymmetrical blasting.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. Social licence to operate is not a new concept for the mining industry, referring to stakeholder approval or acceptance for the activities and impacts of a project, company or industry. It is intangible, dynamic and non-permanent, hence it needs to be earned and then maintained (Thomson and Boutilier, 2014). It has also been argued that social licence extends beyond building approval or acceptance, into engagement for long-term development (Owen and Kemp, 2012).There are many examples where stakeholder opposition – or withdrawal of social licence – have increased capital and operating costs, extended schedules and impacted reputation. At its extreme, the withdrawal of social licence to operate can also contribute to or be the catalyst for mine closure.The key benefit of obtaining a social licence is a reduction of risk. Stakeholder support and advocacy, as well as the implementation of social performance programs that contribute to social licence, can be beneficial in terms of schedule, costs and other benefits.While decisions to close a mine are generally driven by resource availability or economic conditions, the social, economic and environmental legacy remaining post-closure is of importance to many stakeholders. With a number of significant mines now approaching closure within Australia, we are seeing heightened community concern about the economic and social impact of mine closure and the success of land rehabilitation.
