"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is low angle, duplex thrust system that has developed in a graphitic pelite schist within the Otago schist belt, New Zealand . At Round Hill lateral ramps have developed parallel to the movement direction between+ the footwall and hangingwall shears. These structures exhibit normal oblique-slip displacement which has been an important mechanism for creating space in an otherwise compressional system. Gold-bearing quartz veins were emplaced along the boundary shears and lateral ramps during thrusting. Gold within the lateral ramps is coarse (up to 300 microns) however hanging wall cataclasite development in the boundary shears after the gold was deposited has reduced the grainzise of most of the gold to less than one micron. This bimodal gold distribution has metallurgical implications with respect to the maximisation of gold recovery at Macraes.

Steelmaking has a significant contribution in producing greenhouse gases and there is a worldwide push towards decarbonising the process. One of the approaches to reduce CO2 emissions is to use hydrogen in the blast furnace (BF) as the reductant gas. However, hydrogen reduction is an endothermic reaction, bringing changes to the temperature distribution in the BF. Understanding iron ore sinter mineralogy and reducibility under a hydrogen atmosphere is essential to optimise the process. In this study, sinter analogues in the Fe3O4-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) ternary system together with industrial sinters were reduced in H2-rich and CO atmospheres and the resulting reducibility and associated mineralogical changes were observed. Results show that magnetite-lime-silica (MLS) sinter analogues had similar reduction rates under H2 and CO, and also higher reducibility than most of the industrial sinters, suggesting that magnetite sinters could be used efficiently in a conventional or hydrogen blast furnace.

The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

The Golden Cross Mine will be the first underground gold mine in New Zealand to operate since 1952. The development plans, along with the conditions and circumstances presently found in the now ongoing mine development, will be discussed as well as a brief review of planned stoping activity and stoping results to date.

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. Gold was first discovered in the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862. He left his job as a shearer and soon there were up to 3000 miners working over the length of the river. Some parts were extremely rich and a few early miners recovered as much as 300 ounces in a day. From these early days of hand working the operations progressed through to hydraulic elevating once water races and pipes were installed after the Skippers road was completed about 1890. The riverbed was worked in paddocks with .the gravel being sluiced to a central suction which elevated the material over a sluice box. Use of this system continued intermittently through until 1977 when Joe Schieb retired û the last of the hydraulic miners. Many bucket ladder dredges worked on the lower Shotover near Big Beach where the Sew Hoy family recovered a lot of gold. Just after 1900, at least three worked further upstream, one on the beach where Shotover Jet now operates and one further up below the Moonlight. All the sections for this were transported in over the Moonlight Track and the boiler, steam engine and bucket ladder are still sitting at the edge of the river. up near Maori Point a dredge operated from Dredge Slip upstream. Records are poor on these dredges but they all suffered from the frequent floods and large boulders which damaged the bucket line. The last dredging attempt was about 1930 when a suction dredge was constructed on Maori Beach. This failed as seems to be normal for most suction dredging ventures. The river can drop to very low levels in the middle of a dry summer, and in winter when the water is tied up in the mountains as ice and snow. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 feet overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. The ever present risk of flooding dominates the method of working and plant design.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multihearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80 per cent metallisation) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally three per cent carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.
