Traditionally closure has been seen by the Resource sector solely as a green or an environmental issue, focused primarily on the requirement to rehabilitate the site following cessation of production activities. In addition to operational, maintenance and production aspects of processing plant design, future design teams will need to take a more holistic view and consider an increasing number of sustainability issues including safety in design and cleaner production as well as closure itself. Sustainability principles being adopted by industry such as the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Enduring Value Framework are now broadening our understanding of closure. While issues around the closure of tailings dams and associated infrastructure have been widely studied, few investigations have looked closely at the implications of closure on the design of minerals processing plants. It is likely that design teams may be able to make a significant contribution to meeting industry objectives by adopting innovative designs which, in addition to meeting production objectives, deliver sustainable and cost effective plant closure outcomes. This presentation explores the opportunity for innovative design of mineral processing plants through the assessment of alternative closure objectives. This assessment specifically looks at current industry standards and statutory requirements, as well as potential risks and opportunities associated with each objective. Alternative design strategies to meet these objectives are discussed.

Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

Cannington Mine has been developing through paste backfilled stopes since the year 2000. These paste drives have been used as either production drill accesses or long-term bypasses. Prior to this study, the ground support requirements for each paste development cut were: an initial 50 mm layer of fibrecrete, weld mesh bolted with 2.4 m split sets, followed by a second coat of 50 mm fibrecrete. Both layers of fibrecrete and the layer of mesh were to be installed before the next cut could be bored and fired. This support regime proved successful at Cannington, however, the total cycle time for each cut was lengthy due to the installation and curing times associated with each layer of surface support. In an effort to reduce the cycle time a study was carried out, with the aid of RocScience’s Phase2 numerical modelling software. The modelling reviewed all of the parameters controlling the stability of a newly excavated development cut. The parameters studied included the early strength of fibrecrete, the ground support load capacity, and the strength of the paste fill masses which varies depending on the cement content. As a result of the study, the ground support standard was revised. The revision has significantly decreased the cycle time as well as fibrecrete consumption, all the while maintaining the safety of personnel and equipment.

The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

Northparkes Mines is developing the E26 Lift 1 North block cave mine, which is adjoined to the existing E26 cave. This paper presents the challenges and methods used to design the ground support system during the feasibility study. Calibrated numerical simulations were conducted to forecast the levels of rock mass damage and to assist the ground support design. Generally, low to moderate rock mass damage is forecast on the extraction and undercut levels. However, poor ground conditions are expected in sheared and preconditioned zones adjacent the existing E26 cave. This will result in difficult ground conditions during development, undercutting and drawbell establishment. Empirical assessments were conducted to make sure the ground support system is able to handle both the static and dynamic load demand, and to accommodate the deformation values. A safety factor of 1.5 was used for the designs to cover the unknown rock mass conditions and potential for larger seismic events. Learnings from the E26 Lift 1 and SLC, also mining against the E26 cave, are incorporated into the design. Fibrecrete, mesh and resin bolts / mechanical anchors are the primary ground support system used, and cable bolts for intersections with a span of more than 6 m. Following undercutting and during the operating life of the mine, secondary ground support and rehabilitation will be required.

The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.

The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

Inpit tailings disposal has been undertaken at a number of mining sites within Australia. This paper presents a brief history of the experience of inpit tailings disposal at the Marymia Gold Operation in Western Australia, including geotechnical aspects of the design. Regular monitoring of the inpit tailings disposal into the K1SE Pit at Marymia has allowed the operators of the mine to assess the performance of the tailings storage against its predicted performance during the design phase. Results of this monitoring indicated that the predicted performance was exceeded and the results have been incorporated into the design of another large inpit tailings disposal, the K1 Pit. Monitoring of tailings disposal to both the K1SE Pit and K1 Pit has allowed the mine operator to make substantial savings from inpit tailings storage when compared with above ground tailings storage facilities. The inpit method of tailings disposal at Marymia has proven to be acceptable from an environmental perspective by reducing the water resource requirements of the project, backfilling pits, which would otherwise collapse with time and eliminating the need for disturbing additional areas of mining leases, which usually accompanies construction of above ground tailings storage facilities.

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

A Simulation Study on Two-Stage Grinding with High-Pressure Roller Mills By the application of high-pressure roller mill (HPRM) in the field of mineral processing, computer simulation can be used to predict overall performance of a grinding circuit based on data obtained from HPRM comminution test in pilot scale or industrial scale. Using the model developed by Klymowsky and Liu for HPRM comminution and an extended Plitt's model for classification, steady-state of a closed circuit grinding can be calculated by means of a virtual locked-cycle-test conducted on computer. This paper presents the result of a simulation study on two-stage grinding with HPRM as the comminution device. The emphasis is put on the influences of circuit-configuration and way of recirculating classifier's coarse-product on the overall circuit performance. The results show that two-stage grinding with HPRM has its merit and flexibility in meeting demands of various grinding tasks in mineral processing.

Removal of Arsenic in Fluorite Ore by Simultaneous Grinding-Leaching with NaHS Generally speaking, a high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride (HF), which is essential for the semiconductor manufacturing. With the continuous depletion of resources, novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ores are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, a low-grade fluorite ore was upgraded by removing arsenic, which is difficult to remove by conventional method. The mechano-chemical leaching of fluorite ore (i.e. the sample was ground in presence of NaHS, using a beads mill) was carried out to investigate the removal of arsenic from the low-grade fluorite. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced to 73.2 mg/kg.

Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, such mineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associated quartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonly contain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. The shallow parts of HS systems, at depths of The exploration focus is on four principal HS mineralisation styles:copper (eg Chuquicamata, Monywa) or copper-gold (Wafi) in the deep porphyry-hosted parts of systems preferably, in the case of the latter, where supergene oxidation is limited and, hence, flotation may be used for metal recovery; copper¦gold-bearing replacement mantos and pipes hosted by carbonate wallrocks in the deep parts of systems (eg Bisbee); high-grade gold in late-stage veins or hydrothermal breccias that overprint the intermediate to shallow levels of systems (eg El Indio, Goldfield); and large, bulk-mineable gold deposits in the shallow parts of systems that were subjected to supergene oxidation, thereby permitting heap-leach treatment (eg Yanacocha, Pierina). To these preferred HS styles may be added the low-sulphidation vein or disseminated gold¦silver mineralisation that is commonplace alongside many HS systems (eg Victoria at Lepanto).
