Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

There has been a gradual increase in the volume of internationally traded thermal and coking coal, with emphasis on blending of coals rather than single coal usage. New Zealand can take advantage of this situation, especially with its low ash and sulphur content coals. However, there is a need to clarify the thermal and coking behaviour of these coals as they relate to other market players, to benefit both the consumer and supplier. The high volatile matter contents of New Zealand coking coals are due to their high vitrinite content, which causes them to demonstrate stronger coking properties over a wider rank range than Gondwana coals. These same high vitrinite levels appear to correspond with lower initial softening temperatures than for Gondwana coals of similar rank. Preliminary results using thermogravimetric analysis also suggest that New Zealand high volatile bituminous coals can be used to substitute for higher rank Gondwana coals in combustion processes.

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. One of the main steps during the decision-making process of long-term mine planning is the definition of the optimal sequence of extraction, which usually is synonymous with maximising the discounted cash flow of the project subjected to several constraints arising from aspects of technical, physical, and economic limits.Open pit mine production scheduling (OPMPS) comprises several intricacies related to its size and uncertainty of input parameters. Due to its complexity and prohibitive size, traditional mine planning usually relies on heuristic or metaheuristic methodologies which are able to provide good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. However, most of the uncertainty that surrounds the mining complex is ignored leading to non-realistic results.In this paper, a new heuristic approach is explored in order to solve a stochastic version of the OPMPS problem accounting for geological uncertainty in terms of metal content, multiple processing streams, and stockpiling option. The methodology involves generating an initial solution by solving a series of subproblems and this initial solution is improved using a network flow based algorithm.The algorithm was applied to a relatively large gold deposit with more than 119 thousands blocks. Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.

Ground conditions at the Kencana mine, Indonesia, are generally poor and an underhand cut and fill mining method is used for extraction. Due to these poor ground conditions, all vertical development has been conducted using blind, top-down, sink and line excavation methods. Due to time constraints, raiseboring was considered the only viable excavation method for the installation of a return ventilation system for the K2 (Kencana extension) project. In order to achieve successful raiseboring in the poor ground conditions a number of strategies were used including: a detailed geotechnical study for optimal position of the shaft/s, splitting shaft excavation vertically, raiseboring of multiple smaller diameter shafts, extensive pregrouting, installation of drainage holes, and rapid installation of support following excavation.

A Sun SPARCstation based computer network is utilised to store and process mining data at the Macraes Gold Mine. Techbase and Medsystem software running on the SunOS unix platform is used to generate all data plans, sections and other design data required on a daily basis to run the mining operation. The Macraes site is regarded as a fully integrated site where all geological, grade control, exploration, orebody modelling, resource estimation, pit optimisation and mine design is undertaken on site by MacraesÆ professional staff. The methodologies employed are regarded as æstate-of-the-artÆ where computerisation allows the rapid and efficient evaluation of large quantities of mining data by a handful of professional personnel. Ore reserves are estimated using an indicator kriging method and roving cone pit optimisation, a complex process that would not have been achievable in pre-computing days.

The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. investigations have been undertaken into the flow characteristics of mineral slurries from a number of Australian metallurgical plants including Mount Isa Mines Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and Broken Hill South Ltd. Experimental equipment installed for this work included facilities for continuous recording of flow rate and pressure drop and detection of sedimentation.Although the method has subsequently been described in published literature, it is believed that the investigations included the original application of a method for correlation of the flow rate and pressure drop data. This method depends on solving by graphical methods the values of the constants k, and c in the relationship EQUATION 1 where D is pipe diameter; ?P, pressure drop; L, length; and V, mean linear velocity. Discussion of this correlation also reveals why sedimentation velocity does not necessarily vary greatly with pipe diameter.INTRODUCTIONIn order to design pumps and pipeline installations for a Newtonian fluid, measurements of the fluid's density and viscosity in any of a number of instruments are sufficient. Numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were carried out to investigate the flow patterns and stress field redistribution at the hopper and feeder interface. The influences of different filling heights, belt speeds and clearances between the hopper bottom and feeder surface on feeder loads were studied. Meanwhile, experiments were conducted by utilising wedged plane-flow hoppers with different configurations and horizontal feeders with various clearances. The simulation results were compared with theoretical values and experimental measurements. In terms of the cases presented in this study, simulation results reveal good agreements with experimental observations regarding the flow pattern. Being similar to the theoretical values, the simulations provide close predictions on vertical feeder loads for steady flow states, but they may show significant overestimations for initial states. The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.
