AN IMPORTANT innovation in Alabama in the semi-longwall type of coal mining as applied to low-dipping thin seams has been introduced by the Galloway Coal Co., mining the Mary Lee high-ash seam which averages only 26 in. thick. The property is their Mill Creek mine, near Carbon Hill, Ala., in the Warrior coal field. The results, although not final, indicate that roof conditions can be successfully handled by this method without loss of walls, with a rate of recovery much above that possible with the room-and-pillar method, and at the low production cost necessary for this grade of coal. Double cross-headings are turned off a main haulageway on 60-ft. centers and driven 40 ft. wide with thin chain pillars between. These double entries are turned at 525-ft. intervals, leaving a solid block of coal 440 ft. across; that is, from the outside of one pair of headings to the inside of the next pair is 440 ft. The bottom, which consists of hard fireclay, is taken in these entries 8 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep for head room.

The statistical analysis of blast-furnace data was undertaken to determine some of the relations which exist between the variables involved in furnace operation, and particularly to show the effect of variation of slag composition on such economically important factors as coke consumption, daily tonnage of pig iron and sulfur elimination. It' was desired to correlate the results obtained in commercial practice with those predicted from a study of the quaternary system lime-alumina-silica-magnesia. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of blast-furnace daily operating reports, and is intended to indicate the suitability of our method of attack and something of the results that may be expected from an extended statistical examination of such data. It has been shown that blast-furnace slags are not composed of oxides, as reported by chemical analysis, but are actually composed of several compounds, each made up of two or more of the oxides present.' These compounds persist in the liquid state, and the properties of a slag are the properties of a mixture of these compounds, and not of a mixture of the ultimate oxides. The oxides lime, alumina, silica and magnesia make up 94 to 96 per cent. of the usual blast-furnace slag, and assuming that we may neglect the remainder of the components, we may determine the minerals present, and their relative proportions, from a study of the quaternary system involving these four oxides. Operating reports from 15 furnaces were available for this investigation. Complete slag analyses for one slag per day were available, per-mittling the calculation of the mineral composition of the slags used. Basic, malleable and foundry irons, with silicon varying from 0.75 to 4.50 per cent. were included in the reports for this examination.

Introduction and Previous Work THE determination of the low temperature tensile properties of tin and tin-lead alloys was initiated as part of an extensive research program on the phasial equilibria of tin binary systems below 13.2°C and the property changes associated therewith. A survey of the literature revealed that, although some room temperature tensile data were available for tin and a few tin-lead alloys, there existed no survey report of the low tcmPerature tensile properties of these alloys. Accordingly, the tensile data for tin and a series of pure tin alloys containing from 0.01 to 50 pet lead were measured at eleven temperatures horn — 196 to +20°C and are presented here in survey form. In addition to the importance of these tensile data as a preliminary to certain fundamental research, this information promises also to be of commercial importance because of the extensive use now being made of tin-lead solders in refrigeration and gas liquefaction equipment. Occasional failures of the solders in low temperature service have been attributed by some metallurgists to low temperature embrittlement, while others hold that failure results from the transformation of the tin-rich phase of the solder from the solid white (beta) to the powdered gray (alpha) form. From the data previously available in the literature, neither of these explanations can be completely corroborated. cohen and van Lieshout have estab-lished the beta to alpha tin transformation at 13,2°C and have shown that strain accelerates the transformation. Further, they showed that although I pct lead retarded the transformation, it was not eliminated. It will be pertinent, then, to note whether the beta to alpha transformation of the tin.rich phase will occur in a short-time tensile 'test. polanyi and schmid2 studied the tensile properties of tin single crystals at — 185°~ and report that tin is britlle at this tem-perature. In 1946, Kostenets3 reported that pure tin was brittle at —Ig6 and — 253°~, while lead remained ductile at both these temperatures. He also studied the tensile properties of tin-lead alloys containing from 10 to 75 pet lead at —253, —196 and + I~OC. The ultimate tensile strength increased more than two times in going from room temperature to — I96°C and about three times that value on further cooling to — 253 C- All the alloys were brittle at — 196'C except those containing more than 75 pct lead. Even at — 253'C, the 75 pct lead alloy retained 36 pet elongation in a 30 mm-ga. length. Creep is also an important phenomenon

Secretary Membership Committee Increase of Membership Papers and Publications Committee Library Committee Treasurer Report of the Secretary TO THE BOARDOF DIRECTORASN D THE MEMBEROS F THE AMERICANIN STITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAENL GINEERS GENTLEME:N As will be shown by the special reports of the Finance, Membership, Library, Papers and Publications, Increase of Membership, and other standing Committees, together with that of the Treasurer, the year 1927 was one in which the Institute made very satisfactory progress in a number of directions. In total numbers the membership is no larger but in revenue from dues there has been a marked increase. This has been due to the promotion to full membership of Junior Associates of earlier years, to the larger proportion that come in originally as members rather than juniors, and to the keener interest in the work of the Institute reflected in prompter payment of dues. The latter is important, since experience shows that of those who fall behind a large number must ultimately be dropped for non-payment. Conditions in the mining industries have been healthy though not booming. It has been much easier for members to find employment and meet their financial obligations but there has not been that flow of young men into mining, and hence in part into the Institute, that characterized certain earlier years. Rather the tendency toward centralization and larger industrial units has restricted the number, though not the scope, of opportunities for technical men in the mineral industries. The Institute is constantly receiving resignations from members crowded out of mining into other lines of activity. On the other hand, those who remain in mining and metallurgy have a greatly increased necessity for i,dormation and contacts with technology. A few years ago many superintendents and most foremen were non-technical men. Today the reverse rule obtains and shift bosses and men who occupy even lower positions in industrial units are called upon to know and to apply such an amount of technical knowledge that graduate engineers are the rule rather than the exception. The curious situation has obtained that with a much smaller enrolment of students in the schools of mining and metallurgy there has been at times an actual shortage of young engineers for beginners' jobs. The young men retort that the conditions of employment and pay offered in mining are not equal to those in other lines and, while it is undoubtedly true that the young engineer beginning in mining is able to start under conditions markedly better as to pay, living, and responsibility than did the men who are now leaders, they are required to know much more and have usually spent more in time and money to qualify for their jobs. The whole matter is one which warrants much more attention than has been given to it. For the Institute it is important since the young men

In western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquen, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. Character of Solid Bitumens The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquen are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis : Constituents Per Cent Hydrogen.................... 6.8 Carbon...................... 82.4 Nitrogen..................... 1.6 Oxygen...................... 2.7 Sulphur...................... 2.2 Ash.......................... 4.3 100. 0 In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbon. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-con-choidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquen. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Es-peranza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

The use of geothermal energy is expanding very rapidly. This type of energy has proven commercially profitable for generation of electricity, for space heating, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants and for recovery of chemicals contained in natural hot water and steam. Two types of geothermal energy sources are recognized: 1) hot springs in regions of nearly normal heat flow that tap a deep reservoir through which water moves slowly to a hot springs conduit and then rapidly to the surface; 2) hyperthermal areas in which the water is heated by a relatively concentrated heat source related to volcanicity. If there is a geologic trap that provides a geologic analog to a steam boiler, as at Larderello, Italy, the hyperthermal area will have a convecting system that develops superheated water at relatively shallow depth and may provide natural steam in large quantities. If a hyperthermal area is to be productive for a long time, the underflow into the reservoir should be slow enough to allow the heat source and convective system to heat the underflow to the working temperature, and the production rate must not exceed this rate of underflow. A model based on a typical aquifer suggests that the rate of movement of water through the reservoir be such that a few years are spent in transit between isotherms that are spaced about 2°F apart. The possibility of finding blind geothermal areas is illustrated by discussion of the techniques developed in evaluating the subsurface temperatures in the East Tintic district of Utah where a map of isotherms at water level (2000 to 2000 ft below the surface) shows that a hyperthermal area may exist a short distance southeast of the mining district. Very nearly all of the energy that man currently uses comes ultimately from the sun's radiation. This includes water power, fuels such as wood, peat, coal and petroleum, the wind and all our animal power. In the paper summarizing a conference on solar energyl6 the average amount of solar energy received daily on the earth is taken at about 1 cal per m2 per min or slightly less than 2 pcal per cm2 per sec; this is almost exactly the amount of energy on the average that the earth liberates in regions of normal geothermal gradient due to its own internal heating. In many places, however, the energy released is many times the average and in some of these hyperthermal areas, geothermal steam is used for generation of electricity, and hot springs are used for heating buildings and private dwellings, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants, and chemicals may be recoverable from both hot water and steam. The use of hot springs waters for heating houses goes back hundreds of years but until recently was confined to a few dwellings close to the hot springs. In Korea, some houses had hot spring water channeled through conduits in the floor centuries ago and thus the Koreans can be credited with pioneer development of radiant heating. In Iceland at present nearly a third of the population uses natural thermal water for domestic heating." The Reykjavik system pipes hot spring water at about 94°C throughout the city and has devised insulated double pipes that allow the water to be piped for some 25 km with a drop of only 1°C for every 5 km. The actual cost to the Icelandic consumer is only one-third the cost of heating by imported coal and yet the industry is one of the most profitable in Iceland. The most profitable use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity which can be transmitted economically much greater distances than hot water. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam 60 years ago — in 1904. He installed his first steam turbine, with a capacity of only 250 kw, in 1912 as the result of a local quarrel with the power company which furnished the current required in the Larderello chemical industry - an industry that then dated back nearly a century. As experience was gained in drilling deep holes to tap geothermal steam and in converting it to electric power, the capacity of the installation of Larderello gradually increased, but was all destroyed by the Germans during their retreat from Italy in the closing

THIS paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.[+] Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Barberton constitutes the world's deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 20-40 ft. Fractured. sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), 3/8 by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets, 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. THE SHAFT-SINKING OPERATION The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. The head-frame, while ordinary, featured: (I) a storage pocket of 300 cu. ft. capacity with truck servicing facilities, and (2) pneumatically operated dump doors, which were actuated by the hoistman, thus caring for the dumping of the "ball-and-chain"

Within the State of Montana the streams rise in the high mountains at. an elevation of from 5,000 to 8,000 ft. These streams leave the State line both east and west at elevations from 3,500 to 2,400 ft. It is, therefore, apparent. that all these streams have an average fall of 3,000 ft. within the confines of the. State, and many opportunities are presented on all streams. for the development of power, by taking advantage of the natural fall. It is probable that 1,000,000 h. p. can :be developed in the State of Montana. I. NATURAL FEATURES OF STATE AFFECTING POWER DEVELOPMENT. The main. range of the Rocky mountains, forming the Continental Divide, cuts the State of Montana into two parts. The eastern part is drained by the Missouri river and its tributaries, the Madison; Jefferson, Gallatin and Yellowstone, rivers. The western part is drained by tributaries to the Columbia river, the Clarks fork and the Kootenai river. The Clarks fork in turn is formed by the junction of Missoula and Flathead rivers, the latter, draining Flathead lake. The western part of the State. is mountainous and the eastern part is comparatively level. As a natural result the rivers in the western part are capable of generating large amounts of power, while in the eastern part of the State natural power sites are much fewer and farther apart. It also follows that in the mountainous districts large amounts of power are required for the mining industry, while in the eastern part of the State, which is principally devoted to agriculture, power is required in smaller quantities. ?

WORK in recent years1-' has indicated a complexity of the processes of deformation of metal crystals not previously appreciated and not fully accounted for by any hypothesis so far advanced. Furthermore, the nature and mechanism of formation of nuclei of recrystallization have not been determined precisely. The deformation of single crystals of zinc has been studied frequently, but the purity of the zinc and the perfection of the specimens sometimes have been given little consideration. Methods have been developed recently that readily yield zinc single-crystal specimens of high quality.5 In the present work, such specimens were deformed in various ways under various conditions, and deformed specimens were annealed to obtain information regarding recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The paper attempts to correlate and evaluate previous data, as well as to present new data, in order to determine areas in which more detailed work might be done most profitably. Tests at temperatures from the freezing point (419.46°C) to room temperature revealed glide only on basal planes in a close-packed direction (100)*, as reported by Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid6 and others. Markings probably similar to those observed by Kolesnikov7 and Boas and Schmid8 were noted in specimens stretched at elevated temperatures, but it seemed clear that these were not caused by prismatic or pyramidal slip (see second paragraph of section on Phenomena Involving Bending of the Basal Plane). Twinning Twinning on the octahedral plane of a face-centered cubic metal has been pictured as a process of simple homogeneous shearing along that plane in a [112] direction. It was recognized by Mathewson and Phillipsv and others""" that the (102) twinning of zinc required a somewhat more complex mechanism and might be considered as a homogeneous shearing of (102) planes in a [211] direction plus slight adjustments of atoms to positions of greater stability or lower energy, or as a single movement of each of the atoms in the same sense into the final positions. Gough and Cox" modified Mathewson's mechanism to obtain a more stable lattice configuration, but it is not clear that they succeeded, and their mechanism requires movement of some of the atoms in a sense opposite to that of the overall twinning movement. They also suggested that twinning may occur as a result of previous basal slip. This conclusion was based on the observation that twinning caused by alternating torsion was clearest and most profuse at positions for maximum basal slip rather than for maximum stress on (102) planes in the close-packed direction (not the twinning direction), and no mechanism was described. It might be wondered whether resolution of stresses on the twinning plane in the twinning direction would have afforded a simpler explanation. If twinning is essentially a simple homogeneous shearing along the twinning plane, it would seem that twins should grow by a smooth, continuous mechanism, and, indeed, that a simple reversal of stresses should reverse the shearing and de-twin the crystal. Cylindrical tablets 1/8 to 1/4 in. thick were cleaved from singlle-crystal specimens and were squeezed, perpendicular to a second-order prism plane, to give a tensile stress perpendicular to a first-order prism plane. A "click" was heard and a thin, needle-like twin appeared on the basal cleavage face. If squeezing was continued smoothly, the twin, viewed at magnifications up to X500, grew smoothly and quietly (fig. 1). X-ray examination verified that the twinning was of the (102) type. Rotating the compression axis 90" to reverse the stress then caused a smooth, continuous shrinkage and ultimate disappearance of the twin (fig. 2). The squeezing also caused a rumpling of the basal

The various theories as to the well spacing-recovery relationship are reviewed in considerable detail and these theories analyzed in terms of their consistency with modern reservoir engineering concepts. It is concluded that the well spacing problem must be analyzed in terms of recovery efficiency and that a positive answer to the relation between well density and recovery efficiency is not available from direct comparisons of the production histories of wells and fields. The results of an engineering analysis designed to permit approximate calculation of recovery efficiencies as a function of well spacing in a depletion type reservoir from basic reservoir data is presented. Results of this type analysis indicate that the effect of well spacing on recovery efficiency in depletion type reservoirs can be expected to be very small. Limitations of this approach are pointed out, particularly with respect to its application in lenticular reservoirs. Testing techniques are outlined which should indicate whether or not a reservoir is continuous between wells and whether or not satisfactory drainage is being obtained with present spacings. A mass of data of this type indicates continuity to exist in most fields. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to review critically the engineering aspects of the well spacing problem, both from the standpoint of certain concepts and from the standpoint of reservoir mechanics. The well spacing problem is primarily an economic problem in which the optimum well density for a particular field is that density which will yield the greatest oil recovery consistent with justifiable development costs. The well spacing answer in terms of economic conditions, however, is extremely sensitive to the variation in recovery efficiency with well density. Different opinions as to the correct answer to this engineering problem is the basis for most of the wide difference in opinion among various members of the industry as to optimum well spacing. This paper will be confined to the engineering problem of the relation between well density and ultimate oil recovery; economic considerations necessary for the evaluation of optimum well density for any particular field will not be discussed. The paper can be logically divided into two parts. The first part deals with a critical examination of the background and logic of the Cutler Rule and of similar studies by other authors and of related well spacing concepts. It is indicated that the variations in recoveries with well density* observed by Cutler and. others can be logically attributed to regional migration. Theoretical justification of the Cutler type relation wherein observed variations in recovery with well density in the same field is attributed to variations in recovery effiiency, in terms of energy relations, is refuted. The second part consists of a review of concepts of reservoir mechanics with regard to the well density-recovery relation. It is indicated that little variation of recovery efficiency with well density can be expected in a depletion type reservoir, unless lenticular conditions prevent communication between wells. The significance of field test data with regard to the existence or non-existence of lenticular conditions is pointed out. THE CUTLER RULE The first published article concerning the engineering aspects of the well spacing problem to receive wide attention was the work of W. W. Cutler' of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, published in 1924. This report is concerned with fluid displacement in porous media, in those cases where viscous and gravitational forces control the displacement. Such a system would usually be found in a sand body of large physical dimensions such as an oil reservoir, although it is possible to create such a system in the laboratory. It is shown that the position of the fluid interface can be predicted by numerical calculations using a basic idea presented by Dietz. Fluid flow is considered in a vertical plane in a homogeneous, porous medium of sufficient thickness that the capillary transition zone is small in comparison with the total reservoir. A theory developed by Dietz' is used to make numerical calculations of the position of the fluid interface. The results for several conditions are compared with scaled model experiments. The results show that, for gas drive in a reservoir of steep dip, a relatively low flow rate can displace large volumes of oil before gas breakthrough. On the other hand, water injection at favorable mobility ratio and low dip may show best performance at high rates. Water tends to underride the oil and, given sufficient rime, will break through without much oil displacement. For certain conditions, which include relatively low flow rate, the interface is a straight line and its behavior is simple to calculate. At higher flow rates, the interface is unstable, and a numerical solution was programed for an automatic computer. In general, good agreement is shown between the fluid model and the computed results so long as gravitational forces have control. For a water drive at very unfavorable mobility ratio, many small water fingers appear. These viscous fingers are not controlled by the relatively small gravitational forces. When viscous fingering becomes the controlling factor, the mathematical model is oversimplified, and results do not check the fluid flow model. INTRODUCTION Present methods of reservoir analysis depend upon certain simplifying assumptions to obtain mathematical descriptions of practical use. Material-balance methods (Muskat2 or Tarner2) assume uniform fluid saturations in the entire reservoir, or in a few subdivisions of the reservoir. An unsteady-state flow calculation by West, er at considered pressure and saturation changes in flow to a well during solution gas drive, and neglected gravity effects. Results showed only a 4 per cent difference for ultimate oil recovery by the Muskat method, even though the case chosen for study was one in which unsteady-state effects should be high. The Buckley-Leverett5 method commonly assumes a one-dimensional flow system. It is applicable at high flow rates where viscous forces predominate over gravity forces. Simultaneous, parallel flow of the two fluids is assumed, and the concept of a fluid interface is not introduced. Permeabilities to each fluid for a given saturation must be known. The method is not applicable for a two-dimensional system where cross flow becomes possible. Less well known is the displacement equation derived by Dietz. This method is designed for two-dimensional flow systems and assumes a definable fluid interface within the porous medium. Dietz showed that, for a range of low flow rates, the interface would be stable. straight and at an angle of inclination which could be simply calculated. At a certain critical flow rate, the calculated interface tilt would equal the formation dip. For higher flow rates, a finger of displacing fluid would invade the displaced fluid. Dietz indicated that his method applied only to macroscopic reservoir behavior, while the Buckley-Leverett method applied to the small transition zone at the fluid interface. The examples worked out in this report are based on the fluid-displacement theory of Dietz. It is shown that the Dietz theory may be used to derive equations analogous to the Buckley-Leverett equations. In contrast to the Buckley-Leverett method, flow is considered in a plane rather than being limited to a line. Rather than a frontal advance, the movement of a fluid interface is followed. For flow rates substantially exceeding the critical rate and for high viscosity ratio, many fingers of invading fluid occur-—rather than the single finger assumed by Dietz. On the other hand, so long as some gravitational influence remains, the flow is not entirely parallel to the bedding planes as assumed by Buckley and Leverett; therefore, both methods fail to give an adequate descrip-

INTRODUCTION The degree of success of any new project will ultimately depend on two factors: (i) the underlying economic strength of the project; and (ii) how successfully the parties involved can coordinate their interests to establish a financing structure which indeed capitalizes on the project's inherent economic attractiveness. A project's underlying economic attractiveness is determined by its inherent comparative advantage in accessing the factors of production, combining these factors of production to create a product and marketing this product. Initially, the decision regarding whether to go ahead with the project - the go/no go decision - has to be based on its total ability to generate cash flow returns to project participants to compensate them for resources committed and risks undertaken. The extent to which project sponsors will actually benefit from the project's inherent economic attractiveness is fundamentally dependent on their ability to establish the long-term financing arrangement which best meets the objectives and constraints of each project participant and sources the most advantageous funding. The decision regarding the financing of the project, the "how-to-go" decision, is then an attempt to find the capital structure, consistent with market terms and conditions and sound financial management policies which will best: (i) match planned outflows with cash inflows; and (ii) maximize the return for project sponsors. This article makes use of a case study to illustrate the analytical process involved in dealing with the go/no go and the how-to-go decisions on a project. Though most commonly applied to project finance situations, the guideline described herein is equally applicable to other financing situations, such as leveraged buyouts and debt restructurings, where timely repayment of debt depends largely on the future cash flows to be generated by the entity being financed. Our case study is of a hypothetical expansion of an existing copper mining operation in Latin America. The company, Latin American Copper (LAC) currently has 147 million metric tons of proven sulphide ore reserves. The existing mine complex consists of an open pit mining operation and a conventional flotation plant with a processing capacity of 20,000 metric tons of ore per day. LAC sells copper concentrates primarily to Japanese custom smelters. The mine has been in operation for 5 years, fine copper production last year was 108,240 metric tons, and LAC currently has assets of $175 million and net worth of $135 million. Due to a recent increase in proven reserves, LAC is considering doubling the treatment capacity of its flotation plant to 40,000 tons per day, and expanding its mining capacity to meet the additional concentrator capacity (the "Project"). Project capital expenditures and incremental working capital have been estimated at approximately $210 million. The construction period is expected to cover one year, including a three-month start-up phase. The Project is to be funded by a combination of equity, senior debt, including both supplier credits and/or commercial bank term loans, and subordinated debt. LAC's shareholders are willing to commit a maximum of $50 million to the Project. A government development agency, which is also a minority shareholder, might be willing to lend approximately $40 million to LAC in the form of subordinated notes, depending on the ability of the Project to generate foreign exchange reserves. Commercial banks cannot be expected to offer loans with maturities longer than ten years. The Project is expected to increase the value of the firm because: (i) It will solidify the Company's position as a low-cost copper producer by taking advantage of economies of scale. As a result of the expansion, cash production costs are expected to decrease 7.0[c]/lb. and all-in costs 11.0[c]/lb; (ii) The potential earnings stream from the sulphide ore reserves will be realized

INTRODUCTION The Oxford Dictionary says that the word "promoter" has usually been used in an opprobrious sense since at least 1876. This popular image of mining promoters is of cigar-chomping shysters and Brooklyn-Bridge vendors, improving their standard of living with the aid of funds raised through the sale of stock to little old ladies. It is unfortunate that mining promoters are considered crooks until they can prove their integrity and honesty by finding a mine. A common rule of thumb states that for every 1,000 prospects, 100 come to be drilled, and one becomes a mine. However, it is also a statistic that there have been mining promotions, where money raised has gone elsewhere than into the ground; Junior exploration companies can be handy vehicles for unscrupulous financial activity. One must remember though that every stock exchange has had its share of sound mining promotions that, because of the one in 1,000 odds, have failed for legitimate reasons. The promoter must be able to rationalize the worth of a mineral discovery which, on an industry- average basis, probably cost more to find than the discounted value of its net return, which return is not an assured percentage of invested capital, and furthermore, is ultimately from a wasting asset. So, it is easy to understand why the promoter must constantly justify the credibility of his operation to his grubstakers during the course of the "five phases of exploration," those being (1) euphoria, (2) disillusionment, (3) search for the guilty, (4) punishment for the innocent, and (5) distinction for the uninvolved. The promoter with the exploration organization that does not have the benefit of positive cash flow, by definition for the sake of this article, works for a promotional outfit, a Junior Company, that must raise its exploration budget from a variety of sources. Promotion, as discussed here, will not entirely refer to the formation and operation of a joint- stock company but rather to the overall methods of raising risk capital for mineral exploration ventures from outside sources. THE NECESSITY OF PROMOTION In Canada, the publicly financed Junior Company has had an enviable record of mine-finding success. In the Province of British Columbia alone, the discovery of fifteen out of twenty-four mines has been as a result of the activity of the Junior Company (B. C. & Yukon Chamber of Mines, 1977). In the Province of Ontario, one research study indicated that between 1951 and 1974 the 'Juniors' spent only 28 percent of the total exploration funds but were responsible for 62 percent of all economic discoveries (Freyman, 1978). The reasons for the success of the Juniors are tied to a variety of factors, the main one being personal initiative based on incentive. In other words, the principals, or their employees have 'a piece of the action.' The smaller companies can operate faster and more efficiently than their larger counterparts. The Junior Company is also destined to take some bigger risks, the 'long shots,' many of which efforts by virtue of the Junior's perseverance coupled with a touch of 'ore is where you find it' philosophy, result in major discoveries. The individuals, syndicates, private and publicly financed Junior Companies, because of high costs of exploration and development, cannot hope to finance most mineral prospects all the way to production. Exceptions do exist, those being the lower capital cost, small, high-grade deposits. Private investors and publicly financed Junior companies, therefore, can usually afford to finance most exploration through the initial drill-testing stage. The major resource company will enter a mining deal with a Junior Company usually by way of option or joint venture agreement, and will finance to production to earn an equity in the prospect or the Junior Company or both. The conventional lending institutions, banks and government agencies, will usually only participate through loaning a portion of capital

FLOW and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even universal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non- mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manage- able simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. Results are presented of a study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermo-mechanical treatments on the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of high purity 7075 aluminum alloy. The most important single variable influencing mechanical properties was found to be undissolved alloy second Phase (microsegregation inherited from the original ingot). Ultimate and yield strengths were found to increase linearly with decreasing amount of alloy second phase while ductility increased markedly. At low amounts of second phase, transverse properties were approximately equal to longitudinal properties. In tensile testing, microcracks and holes were invariably found to originate in or around second phase particles. Fracture occurred both by propagation of cracks and coalescence of holes, depending on the distribution and amount of second phase. IN most commercial wrought alloys, second phase particles are present that are inherited from the original cast ingot. These include, for example, non-equilibrium alloy second phases such as CuAl2 and impurity second phases such as FeA13 and Cr2A1, in aluminum alloys. A previous paper1 has dealt with the morphology of these second phases in cast and wrought aluminum 7075 alloy, and with their behavior during various thermomechanical treatments. In this paper we discuss the influence of the particles on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the alloy. Previous experimental work indicating a direct and major effect of second phase particles on mechanical properties (especially on ductility) includes the work of Edelson and Baldwin on pure copper.' Also relevant are the many studies demonstrating the important effect of nonmetallic inclusions on the fracture of. steel.3'4 Work on aluminum includes that of Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal5 who showed that a dramatic improvement in ductility of wrought aluminum alloys of the 7000 series is achieved by eliminating second phases. It now seems well established that included second phases play a dominant role in controlling ductility (as measured, for example, by reduction in area in a tensile test) of a variety of materials. There is, therefore, considerable current interest in the mechanisms by which second phase particles affect ductile fracture. Experiments done by various workers have shown that second phase particles or discontinuities in the microstructure are potential sites for nuclea-tion of microcracks and of holes,6-l3 which then grow and cause premature fracture and the loss of ductility. Theoretical attempts have been made to explain the observed phenomena; most are able to explain observations qualitatively, but lack quantitative agreement. Much experimental work needs to be done to aid extension of theoretical models. A recent review article by Rosenfield summarizes work in this general area.14 PROCEDURE Material used in the previously described study on solution kinetics of cast and wrought 7075 alloy1 was also used in this study. Procedures for ingot casting, solution treating, and working were described in detail in that paper. Test bars were obtained for material of 76 initial dendrite arm spacing (11/2 in. from the ingot base) and 95 µ initial dendrite arm spacing (51/2 in. from the ingot base) for the following thermomechanical treatments (solution temperature 860°F; reduction by cold rolling). a) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 2/1, 4/1, and 16/1. b) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 16/1, solution treated approximately 5 hr after reduction. c) Same as a) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. d) Same as b) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. e) Same as d) except solution treated 20 hr after reduction. Test bars were taken both longitudinally and transverse to the rolling direction. Transverse properties are in the long transverse direction; since the final product was sheet (0.030 in. thick), properties in the short transverse direction could not be obtained. Test bars were flat specimens, of gage cross section1/-| in. by 0.030 in. and 1/2 in. gage length. After machining the test bars, they were given an additional 1/2 hr solution treatment of 860°F and aged 24 hr at 250°F. Three bars were tested for each location and thermomechanical treatment, after rejection of mechanically flawed bars. The average results of these three bars are reported. Elongation was measured using a $ in. extensometer and reduction in area was determined using a profilometer to measure the area after fracture. INFLUENCE OF THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENTS AND SECOND PHASE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Results of mechanical testing are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 and in tabular form in the Appendix. A general conclusion from results obtained is that details of the thermomechanical treatments studied were important only insofar as they influenced the amount of residual second phase. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently are characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. Questionnaires and special letters soliciting information were sent to a great many geologists, petroleum engineers, independent operators, and representatives of large companies in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico. Replies to more than 50 per cent. of these letters were received. A survey of the facts and opinions presented in this correspondence will be made a little later, but first some of the general aspects of the problem will be reviewed. By "unit operation,"1 we mean the development and operation of a single entire pool, or reservoir, of petroleum by one management, on a systematic and scientific plan which is best calculated ultimately to extract from the pay sand and bring to the surface of the ground the largest possible amount of oil with the greatest possible total profit. No one, as far as the author has been able to ascertain, denies the advantages, both scientific and practical, of unit operation. All are agreed that it is sound in theory. It permits the proper distribution of wells, which should always be spaced on the ground according to a regular geometric plan with the intention of maintaining the same spacing all the way down and into the pay sand, or pay sands. This spacing will be different for different fields, depending on such variable factors as the lithologic character of the pay formation, the nature of the controlling structure, the depth of drilling, the viscosity of the oil, and so on. From the viewpoint of engineering practice, as applied to economical extraction of oil, there is no more important consideration than well spacing—well spacing in the pay formation, and not merely on the surface of the ground —for the method of well spacing has a direct bearing upon all such engineering practices as pressure control, repressuring by gas, the water drive, and SO on. The absolute porosity of a rock or sand may be defined as the volume of the interparticle space expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. The effective porosity as contrasted with the absolute porosity is the volume of the interparticle spaces which intercommunicate with passages of sufficient size to permit the entrance or recovery of gas or oil, also expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. A knowledge of effective porosity is of prime importance in estimating the ultimate recovery to be expected from oil and gas-bearing formations. The determination of the effective porosity of a rock includes the measurement of two values: (I) the volume of the rock as a whole, and (2) the volume of the grains and sealed pore space. This paper deals with a new apparatus which has been called a "hydrogen porosimeter" for determining the volume of the grains and the sealed pore space. This volume is determined by means of the pressure relations established in the instrument by the introduction of a known quantity of hydrogen. The Hydrogen Porosimeter The apparatus used in this work consists of an upper chamber for measuring the gas, a lower chamber for holding the sample to be tested, a gage for measuring the pressures, a tank of hydrogen, and the necessary connections. (Figs. 1 and 2.) Of the several gases that might be used for this work, hydrogen has been chosen for three reasons: (1) it deviates less from the gas laws than most gases; (2) it readily penetrates the sample; (3) it is absorbed less than most gases by the solids and liquids with which it may come in contact. Method of Operation After placing the sample to be tested in the lower chamber, the apparatus is thoroughly flushed with hydrogen to remove all air from the system, which is then brought to atmospheric pressure Po. The valve connecting the two chambers is next closed and the pressure in the upper chamber is brought up to a pressure PI by admitting gas from the tank.
