The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Unlike the first predicted deep-sea mining (DSM) boom 35 years, the public response to the re-emergent possibility of DSM is this time round is not entirely optimistic, with serious economic, social, and environmental concerns being voiced. In the intervening years, the troubling notion of the ‘resource curse’ has been popularized, whereby the economies of developing nations rich in natural resources (agriculture, minerals, and fuels), paradoxically appear to fare more poorly than their brethren who have fewer such resources. There have been a variety of explanations and counter-arguments regarding why the resource curse occurs, including how it can be ‘escaped’, and even some disagreement on whether it in fact does occur. Nevertheless, many commentators appear to agree that that the quality of governance is strongly implicated in the socioeconomic success, or failure, of these resource-dependent nations, and could indeed be the deciding factor. Unlike nations with diversified economies, the majority of the income from natural resource economies, in the form of royalties and rents, flows through national government; hence, good governance and fiscal management is of particular concern.

Ion flotation shows great promise for recovering and removing metal ions from dilute process streams, either for environmental compliance or to recover values. This technique uses an ionic collector to concentrate non-surface active colligend ions of the opposite charge from a bulk solution at the solution?vapor interface. With a sufficiently large solution?vapor interfacial area (provided, for example, by sparging gas through the solution), the colligend can be concentrated and removed along with the collector in a foam phase. A key limitation on using the technique in the minerals industry, where many process streams contain a variety of ions and have relatively high ionic strengths, is the need to control which ions are interacting with the collector. Here the effect of three different chelating agents, namely dodecyldiethylenetriamine (Ddien), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and triethylenetetraamine (Trien), on the selectivity of copper, nickel and cobalt, or copper and alkaline earth metal ions, is reported. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for adoption in the minerals industry.

Whilst mine planners almost universally assume deterministic forward commodity prices when undertaking valuations of mining projects, historical data well demonstrates that those prices are quite volatile. This paper seeks to understand and quantify how this forward price uncertainty will impact mining project valuation. This paper will also present a way of computing an upper bound on the expected Net Present Value (NPV) of a mining project given forward commodity price uncertainty.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

As the techniques and resolution for 3-D spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional x-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of ten microns can be achieved with the use of microfocus x-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam x-ray microtomography system has been installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility has been designed to obtain 2048 x 2048 pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind, instrument will be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for such applications as specific examples 3D liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of x-ray microtomography not only will allow for quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allow for textural characterization and the determination of phase continuity. In this paper, we present information regarding the current use of this new facility and reviewed potential applications for the advanced analytical system.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED, and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies; ten subjects in each of the age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years, and 51+ years. Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view, and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test. A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

"Ferromanganese crusts contain hydrous Mn and Fe oxides as main metal compounds together with some economically interesting minor elements such as Co, Ni, Ti and Cu and trace metals such as Mo, W, Nb, Te, Ga, Pt, and REEs. Some of these metals or semimetals have a great future potential as innovative high-technology constituents. All of them are highly enriched in the crusts compared to seawater composition.The Mn in the crusts mainly originates from the O2 - minimum zone in the oceanic water column. The agent for Mn2+ oxidation is dissolved oxygen, transported upwards from colder deep water layers by turbulent eddy diffusion. The Mn itself descends from surface waters and is carried down to the O2-minimum zone by fecal pellet transport. In contrast, Fe is mainly supplied from carbonate dissolution of planktonic skeletons in the water column. These relationships result in the fact that the oceanic water depth strongly controls the metal composition of ferromanganese crusts: the Mn - group metals are more enriched in shallower water, whereas the concentration of the Fe - group metals increase with water depth. The REEs play a very important role with regard to the trace metal composition of the crusts: their concentrations increase with water depth mainly controlled by a decreasing Mn/Fe ratio.In seawater, REEs occur as carbonate complexes; preferably, the light rare earth elements (LREEs) form REECO3 +(aq) and the heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREEs) REE(CO3)2 (aq) complexes. The REEs are transition metals, their 6s orbital of the outermost shell is filled before the filling of lower 4f electron shells is completed, thus the configuration of the valence electrons is similar in all the REEs, and all REEs exhibit similar chemical behavior and exist, dominantly, as 3+ cations. The ionic radius decreases progressively from La3+ (1.18 Å) to Lu3+ (0.97 Å), this phenomenon is called "lanthanide contraction". Due to the fact that REEs in seawater form cationic and anionic carbonate complexes, the two main hydrogenetic constituents, hydrous !-MnO2 and Fe-oxyhydroxide, fractionate the group of REEs by surface absorption processes. According to the pHZPC-concept the ?- MnO2 phase has an electronegative surface, and Fe-oxyhydroxide a slightly positive surface charge at seawater pH. These relationships are the main reason for the observed REEs fractionation."

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.

There are multiple stages in a mining operation that a mining engineer has to draw polygons to be used as operation guidelines. These polygons are drawn by hand and based on engineer?s experience. However, having automatic procedures for forming the shapes can increase the quality and decrease the efforts required. These shapes need to be homogenous in grades and rock types so that the quality and dilution of material sent to the plant can be estimated with the good approximation. In this paper, a clustering algorithm with shape control is introduced which can provide reasonable guidelines for all the aforementioned shapes by manipulating its parameters. At the end, implementations of the algorithm on a small part of a gold deposit with different mining strategies is presented and evaluated based on homogeneity of grade, rock types and determined destinations as well as the shape.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. But obstacles abound for mining, mineral-processing and cement operations striving to implement the technologies. Harsh machine environments can muddy efforts. High vibration in machinery can interfere with wide-spread rollout. Staff expertise or skills may be lacking. And costs may be prohibitive. Fault detection has emerged as a practical and cost-effective solution to identify process and machinery faults before failure interrupts productivity or jeopardizes worker safety. Fault detection can be a stand-alone system or connected to plant automation.

Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. The Weibull distribution has three parameters that vary to fit the subsidence profile so well that the profile function derived from it provides a high degree of accuracy in subeidence prediction. With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine.
