The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the use of rheology to provide insight into the mechanism of flocculation. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

In several sections of the country new demands are being brought bar cement users. Among these the demand' for truck shipments; and palletized loads present new problems that do not lend themselves to sample solution. In fact these demands have far-reaching effect in the way bagged cement might be marketed. Early solutions of palletized truck loads filled from existing packing and loading facilities have resulted in' slowdown in packing, additional labor and space for palletizing, considerable experimentation in type and construction of pallets, and usually far from optimum truck handling and loading methods.

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners' own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. A series of adsorption tests are carried out to understand the ability of cationic surfactants and metal ions to adsorb onto sepiolite. Adsorption tests conducted as a function of heat treatment reveal that sepiolite is rather conducive to the uptake of both organic and inorganic ions. An ion exchange mechanism between surfactant or metal cation and magnesium ion followed by chain-chain association is proposed to explain the incorporation of cationic surfactants into the structure of sepiolite.

Coal-water slurry preparation requires fine grinding and cleaning of coal by flotation. Finer grinding leads to increased ball wear and its effect on the surface properties of coal becomes of concern. Marked ball wear tests were performed to study the effects of oxygen, pH, the soluble species of coal and the addition of pyrrhotite on ball wear. The synergistic action of coal and oxygen greatly enhanced the corrosion of mild steel balls during grinding. Electrochemical measurements on a mild steel electrode in coal slurries and SEM observations of grinding ball surfaces were carried out to explore the corrosive wear mechanism.

Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes in the southwestern United States are areas where middle to late Tertiary low-angle normal faulting has uncovered rocks that were at temperatures sufficient for mylonitization during the early part of Tertiary extensional faulting. Large-displacement low-angle normal faults that separate upper-and lower-plate rocks in metamorphic core complexes are termed detachment faults. The significance of Tertiary detachment faulting in the Basin and Range Province has only become apparent in the past 6-8 years, and the association of mineral deposits with detachment faults has only been recognized in the past few years as well. Crystalline rocks below detachment faults have typically undergone chloritic alteration and brecciation over a distance of a few to a few hundred meters below the fault surface (Fig. 1). Chloritic alteration and brecciation overprinted mylonitic fabrics formed during earlier ductile shearing along the down-dip projection of detachment faults. Rocks that underwent pre-Tertiary ductile deformation and prograde metamorphism were subjected, in rapid succession, to middle to late Tertiary mylonitization, brecciation and chloritic alteration, microbrecciation immediately adjacent to the fault, and subaerial exposure. Lower-plate rocks thus experienced rapid decompression and cooling as a result of tectonic denudation and isostatic uplift (Wernicke, 1981; Davis, 1983; Davis et al., 1986).

Coal blending inherently means homogenizing a mixture of coals so that, overall, the properties of the blend meet some specifications for maintaining power plant performance and emission requirements. In common practice, however, coal blending is at best coal mixing. If necessary, more sophisticated blending systems can produce a more homogeneous feed by using accurate weighing devices and on-line coal analyzers coupled with sampling systems. Blending can be accomplished at the mine, on stockpiles, and from bins, bunkers, and silos.

Continuous miners (CM) are the most popular underground mining machinery in soft rock mining, playing a dominant role in the production of minerals ranging from coal to evaporites while finding increasing use in salt and potash mines. Along with the ongoing technological advancements in the mining industry and the underground equipment, new generation of CMs offer several new features that are designed to enhance their operational capabilities and production rate. In addition to new bits and bit holders, one of the areas of improvement is the cutterhead design through computer modeling and simulation based on the full scale cutting tests. This paper discusses the state-of the-art CM technology and development of the computer models for design analysis and performance estimation of CMs. The general approach used in the modeling, along with the results of field trials for several projects will be presented.

This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

The impact of the computer revolution--so pervasive in some industries--has been less startling in the mining industry. Computer techniques have been used successfully to provide drill hole calculations, contour maps, and a variety of conventional maintenance scheduling, and accounting applications. But it is our experience that the real economic payoffs lie in the engineering application of computers to mine planning and the use of systems engineering techniques for mine operations. Since 1964, Newmont Mining Corporation has been engaged in systematic research and development of computer techniques in a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective in using computers has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable, near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody, and second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of these computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the machine capability for duplicating manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. The necessity of including all recognized geologic characteristics is obvious. Capability for properly incorporating structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one development.

"In recent years, the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has grown due to increasing demand and global supply shortage. The supply deficit of these critical elements has encouraged the search for new sources, with coal and coal byproducts as possibilities. Coals from certain parts of the world can be rich in REEs and can approach a total concentration of 1,000 ppm. Two Alaskan coal samples, from Healy and Wishbone Hill, were investigated for the effects of density and particle size on REE concentrations for three selected size fractions, and flotation tests were conducted on finer fractions. Additionally, bottom ash and fly ash samples from a power plant were examined for their REE concentrations. The results show that the upgrade potential for REEs on an ash basis from a whole-coal basis ranges from 2:1 for the Wishbone Hill samples to 4:1 for the Healy coal samples. Flotations of the finer fractions of the two coal samples, conducted under similar conditions, revealed higher concentrations of REEs in the tailings. Both coal samples had comparatively higher contents of light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) than heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). REE content trends for the power-plant products on an ash basis indicate that fly ash has slightly higher concentrations of both LREEs and HREEs than bottom ash. IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs), also known as rare earth metals, and their compounds are vital components in industrial, automotive, petrochemical, defense and medical applications. Dysprosium in combination with other elements is used in laser materials and nuclear control applications. Neodymium is present in magnets that are used in the manufacture of wind turbines and hybrid cars. Europium, terbium and yttrium are used in devices that have visual displays such as computer screens and laptops (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002; Bunzli, 2013). REEs pose fewer environmental problems of disposal and recycling than their conventional heavy metal counterparts (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002). They are key materials for radar systems, avionics, modern national defense and satellites (Cammarata and Sieradzki, 1994; Hedrick, 2010; Martin, 2010; Szumigala and Werdon, 2011; Cordier, 2011; Bunzli, 2013). REEs are often classified into light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). This classification is primarily based on the electronic configuration in the outermost shell. LREEs, ranging from lanthanum to gadolinium, have a single or no spinning electron in the outermost 4f shell while HREEs, ranging from terbium to lutetium, have paired electrons in the 4f shell. This difference in electronic configuration is responsible for the differences in physical and chemical properties of REEs."

The price records of 7 representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that, heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum)', and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their preeminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities. were selected before any price figures were compiled, none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends, The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the United States in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons, Two such comparisons have been made: (1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year; and (2) the unit price of each commodity through hhe years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts.

"This paper presents the results of tests performed to study the effect of slurry solids concentration on the behavior of gas dispersion in industrial-scale mechanical flotation cells. The experiments were conducted at five concentrator facilities run by a Mexican mining company, specifically in the rougher bank of the lead/zinc flotation circuits. Those mechanical cells having significant contribution to the performance of the circuit, that is, the cells that enable high recovery, were characterized. The measurement protocol enables measurement of the superficial gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size, and sampling of the mineral slurry. The measured data indicate that bubble size and gas holdup decreases as the concentration of solids increases. IntroductionThe process of mineral concentration by flotation is based on contact between particles and air bubbles, the selective adhesion of hydrophobic particles onto the bubbles, and the rising of the bubble-particle aggregates to the surface of the flotation cell to overflow over the lip to form the concentrate. It is now accepted that the physical and chemical process variables that control the flotation of hydrophobic particles are closely related to gas dispersion (Schwarz and Alexander, 2005). Gas dispersion is defined by the superficial gas velocity, Jg (Torrealba-Vargas, Gomez and Finch, 2006), the gas holdup, eg (Tavera, Gomez and Finch, 1997), the bubble size, d32 (Dobby and Finch, 1986; Gorain et al., 1995; Hernandez-Aguilar et al., 2004) , and the bubble surface area flux, Sb (Manqiu and Finch, 1989; Manqiu, Finch and Uribe-Salas, 1991). In recent years, the advances that have been made in sensor technology have enabled the characterization of gas dispersion in industrial flotation cells with excellent results (Gomez and Finch, 2007). This technology advancement has allowed the gaining of a deeper understanding of such complex mechanisms as carrying capacity (Yianatos and Contreras, 2010), collection efficiency (Gorain, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1997; Massinaei et al., 2009) and bubble coalescence (Finch, Nesset and Acuña, 2008; Zangooi, Gomez and Finch, 2010)."

The metallurgical processing industry is in the midst of a hydrometallurgical revolution with mining companies looking for low cost, energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for processing sulfide ores and concentrates. The Intec Copper Process is one of the most advanced of these technologies and has the potential to greatly change the way copper concentrates are treated in the future. Specifically, the Intec process has the ability to be built on a small scale and at mine sites while being much more economic than conventional smelting. Intec Copper has constructed a I tonne of copper per day demonstration plant in Sydney, Australia designed to verify metallurgical and operational performance. This paper will describe the process in more detail and provide preliminary results of the process based on the plant's performance. It will also compare the Intec Copper Process with a few of the competing technologies and evaluate the relative economic merits of Intec.

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

In 1970 Texasgulf (Australia) introduced natural gamma radiation logging of drill holes for exploration in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Drill hole logs have allowed positive stratigraphic and structural correlations within complexly folded secondary hematite ore deposits and between individual iron ore deposits separated by distances in excess of seventy-five miles. A Neltronics model KPD logging system and gamma-ray sonde are being used to measure the natural gamma radiation of the enriched Brockman and Marra Mamba banded iron formations. The parent banded iron formations are composed of thick, chemically precipitated iron oxide, chert, iron silicate, and carbonate with thin intro-formational clastic horizons. These clastic horizons give a greater natural gamma radiation than the banded iron horizon, and each clastic horizon has a characteristic radiation profile related to its composition and thickness. Because the natural gamma-radiation profile is unchanged during secondary enrichment of the iron formation, the present stratigraphic position of each drill hole can be established and complex folding can be accurately traced in the sub-surface. Gamma ray logging of percussion drill holes has made feasible a significant reduction in diamond core drilling without loss of accuracy. At the same time, it has provided a means of rapid evaluation of complexly folded iron ore deposits.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.

The Malmberget Division of LKAB is located 70 km north of the arctic circle and has about 2000 employees. The dominating products are sinter feed concentrate and pellets. A general flow sheet for the operation is shown in Figure 1. About 20 percent of the ore body consists of hematite, which is mined separately and processed into sinter feed concentrate. That pert of the ore consisting of magnetite passes through a dry cobbing plant. The robbing process includes crushing, screening and dry magnetic separation. The entire cobbing product is used as feed for the wet concentrator. After rod mill grinding and magnetic separation the concentrated slurry is classified. The coarse fraction (+200 mesh) becomes sinter feed concentrate and the slime fraction after further ball mill grinding and magnetic separation, becomes pelletizing feed. A small quantity of the magnetite ore is processed into special iron-rich products in the the wet concentrator. Two types of pelletizing plant are used, shaft furnace and straight grate. This paper will deal only with experience gained at the straight grate plant.

Although researchers have struggled to replicate Heinrich’s safety triangle findings (Heinrich 1931) for various reasons (e.g., no access to his original database and it is unclear if the database was of a single establishment/operation or for an entire industry), the occupational safety community has continued to adopt and expand the applications of this theory (e.g., McSween 2003). Within the mining industry, the potential exists for operations and companies to use concepts from the safety triangle as a way to inform or challenge the practices employed within their health and safety management systems (HSMS) to prevent incidents (Backlund 2016). This paper considers data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s databases and demonstrates the validity of applying the safety triangle theory at the mine level. The results support the use of this theory and demonstrate that lower severity incidents can predict fatalities in a subsequent year where significant nuances and caveats to applying the theory are identified and discussed.
