"Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

An existing operation carries with it a history that can present unique opportunities, while a greenfield operation allows for the establishment of a defined culture. Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. Western mines have had limited choices for standing support. Wood cribs were often too soft and unstable. The introduction of the Can support in the early 1990’s provided a very effective alternative and remains the dominant form of tailgate support. Water-filled prestressing cells are now used to cap the Can and preload it to provide an active roof load. The Cluster Prop, consisting of three timber wedge props bundled together, provides more capacity than an equivalent sized Can support and improves transport efficiency. However, the Cluster Prop is less stable and does not maintain a consistent load throughout its loading profile. Pumpable roof supports are another alternative support, but they have not been proven in high deformation environments. Alternative supports are also being used in longwall recovery operations. These include the Rocprop and Omni Prop, which are extendable support systems. They also provide active roof loading which can be beneficial in these applications. Specialty supports, such as the Sand Prop and Spider Prop, have also been introduced into western longwall operations. This paper compares the performance characteristics of these various support systems.

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. The following effluent radium-226 activities were established as targets for the program: 0.37 Bq/L (10 pCi/L) as total radium-226; 0.11 Bq/L (3 pCi/L) as dissolved radium-226. High performance sprayed concrete equipment installed on two 9.4 m diameter hard rock TBMs enabled a continuous sprayed concrete lining for the entire contour in both tunnels to be performed concurrently with the advancing TBMs. Innovative layout of the sprayed concrete arrangements comprised ring beam constructions each with two independent spraying robots. Each of the spraying robots were independently connected to sprayed concrete pumps, as well as a high capacity concrete logistics system on the backup. The mix designs focused on long open-time, excellent pumpability and tough requirements on strength development. The achieved output capacities of the sprayed concrete amounts to an average of 15 m3 per hour. Peak capacities of 24 m3 per hour have been realized.

John C. Greenway was responsible for much of my success in the seven years from what I called the end of my apprenticeship in exploration until I entered the Army in World War I. I first met Green- way on my return from Promontorio and, as he was replacing Powell, he was to be my boss. Even at first glance you couldn't help liking and trusting him. He was tall, well built, and erect-an old Yale athlete. After college he became a captain in the Rough Riders and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, distinguishing himself in the Cuban campaign. He made good friends in all ranks of the Rough Riders, some later becoming leaders of industry and others following Greenway where-ever he went. After the Spanish War Greenway worked for iron mining companies around the Great Lakes and when the directors decided that Calumet and Arizona needed a new manager the ones who were also prominent in Oliver Iron Mining Co. selected Greenway It was a lucky choice for Greenway and for me. He became the best manager among those who ran the big copper mines He was open-minded in encouraging discussion and even opposition-until he made up his mind. Then, in military fashion, everyone must follow his decision without question. I think this is an essential of good management. Unfortunately a few did not feel this way and they had to leave. It was characteristic of those times that respect for the boss was so great that in the 16 years in which he was one of my best friends I, like all under him, always called him "Mr. Greenway." Soon after he arrived Greenway asked the leading mine operators in the southwest, Dr. Louis D. Ricketts and James S. Douglas, son of the Dr. James Douglas who had made Phelps Dodge great, to do special work for Calumet and Arizona. I found later that the object of the study was to determine the terms on which the half-dozen Warren District properties of Calumet and Arizona were to be joined in one

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

INTRODUCTION The theory of mineral demand often is slighted in the study of mineral economics. The supply side of the mineral industries usually commands a great deal more attention and effort by mineral economists than the demand side does because the study of mineral supply includes topics such as exploration, resource availability, and exhaustion theory that are generally considered unique to the mineral industries. Mineral demand, on the other hand, is thought of as being more general in nature and therefore of less concern to mineral industries specialists since it is similar to the demand for other inputs of production. This similarity with other inputs of production, however, does not negate the importance of a thorough understanding of mineral demand. It is the interaction of supply and demand that determines market behavior and not supply alone. Mineral demand is a key component among the factors that influence mineral production; there- fore, a good understanding of mineral demand can give one better insights into the industry behavior and trends than one would otherwise have. A strong working knowledge of the demand side of the mineral industries is a powerful tool for analyzing and predicting mineral market behavior. The material presented in this chapter does not depend on any special background in economics and should be accessible to all interested readers. The chapter is organized so as to permit an orderly progression of the basic topics of the theory of mineral demand while allowing digressions on related issues of special interest. The first section of the chapter is on the determinates of mineral demand. The discussion be- gins with the introduction of consumer demand and some of the necessary terminology of economics and proceeds to the particular case of the derived demand for an input of production such as minerals and the characteristics of such demand. The second section of the chapter is on the response of mineral demand to changes in economic variables like price and aggregate income. This second section of the chapter be- gins with a general presentation of elasticity of demand and continues with the particular case of the price responsiveness of mineral demand and its nature in the short and long-runs. A brief look at the response of mineral demand to price changes for other products is also included. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the effect of aggregate income changes on mineral demand and its nature in the short and long-runs.

INTRODUCTION This chapter will discuss, both from fundamental and practical points of view, the flotation of non-sulfide min- eral s. The flotation characteristics of silicates, salt-type minerals, oxides and coal will be reviewed. Dup- lication of the thorough and excellent presentations by many authors is not intended and a comprehensive list of references is included. GENERAL PRINCIPLES Collectors for Non-Sulfide Minerals : All minerals, with only a few exceptions are readily wetted by water, that is, they are said to be hydrophilic. The purpose of a collector is to coat the mineral surface and render it hydrophobic, preferring an environment of air over an environment of water. Relative to sulphide minerals, the non- sulfides are more naturally hydrophilic and therefore, require a collector with a greater chain length. This is accomplished by using a collector which has a proportionally longer hydrocarbon chain. Both anionic and cationic flotation collectors are used in non- sulfide flotation. Anionic Collectors. These are collectors which ionize in solution to give a negatively charged radical. They have the general structure R-A, where R is a hydrocarbon having 8 or more carbon atoms and A is a hydrogen or an alkali metal. The most common collectors in this group are fatty acids which could have saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. Such chains may be straight or branched. The configuration of the chains affects their solubility in water and their adsorption characteristics. In general, as the chain length increases the adsorption and the collecting power increases. However, it should be noted that the solubility decreases. The solubility of unsaturated chains is greater than that of saturated fatty acids because double or triple bonds are polar and thus attract water molecules. Solubility data for collector metal salts, even though important for a proper understanding of flotation are not available for all collector systems. Solubilities and structures of different fatty acids are reported by Fuerstenau (1982). Values for the solubility products of fatty acid salts selected from a paper by Du Rietz (1958) are given in Table 1.

A geotechnical monitoring program has been implemented at Energy West Mining Company for enhancing site-specific evaluation of longwall stress conditions. This program consists of underground measurements at five locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon Coal Seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on recorded seismic events and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program together with detailed geologic mapping of longwall gateroads. In conjunction with the measurement program, the authors have completed detailed boundary-element stress analyses of the mine plans. Models have been calibrated using the data from in-mine instrumentations and then routinely used for evaluation of mine plans at depths approaching 2,600-ft. The work has improved our understanding of load transfer, seismicity and yield pillar performance. It has identified areas of potential increased stress levels at certain longwall face positions and provided guidance to measures that could be considered to mitigate the potential for these increased stress levels.

A simplified two-dimensional model to analyze time-dependent load distribution and surface subsidence associated with longwall mining geometries is described. The model is based on the theory of beams resting on inelastic foundations and includes visco-elastic behavior of immediate floor strata, non-linear behavior of coal pillars, elastic behavior of face supports, and visco-elastic behavior of the overburden strata. The relative importance of the different variables affecting the performance of longwall mining geometries from ground control point of view is also analyzed. The model has been validated for field observations from one Illinois longwall mine.

INTRODUCTION The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, predicted by theoretical calculation based on washability studies and determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants, will be different for each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods for evaluating the technical and economical efficiency of separating coal in coal cleaning equipment and for predicting the quantity and quality of cleaned coal produced, as well as profit- ability for the entire plant. Many formulas have been proposed by investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however, each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Technical Measures of Equipment/Plant Performance Conventional measures for evaluating the performance of a preparation plant are generally the same as those used to evaluate equipment performance. Measures involving separation efficiencies are influenced by the following three broadly encompassing primary factors: (1) density composition of the feed coal, (2) design characteristics of the cleaning unit, and (3) relative density of the separation. Since separation efficiencies are dependent on factors involving the nature of the coal, they are termed dependent criteria and represent a very broad technical indicator of an individual process or plant performance. Performance measures known as independent criteria are influenced mainly by quantitative errors inherent in the design and operation of the processing equipment. Economic Measures of Plant Performance True assessment of coal cleaning methods require reference to economic measures such as profitability. During the years in which technical efficiency criteria for characterizing plant performance were being improved, coal preparation engineers were also seeking appropriate economic criteria to assess plant performance. Technical and economic effectiveness of plant performance are important parameters for coal preparation flowsheet design. Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. Lithoprobe is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project which is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within ten study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of tectonic processes which lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping litho logic contacts as well as structural features, and in some cases have been used for the direct detection of ore bodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

World demand for phosphate fertilizers has grown at an average annual rate of between 6 and 7 per cent over the past 10 years. In the next five years world demand is expected to at least continue to grow at that rate. Also, the continued need for improved fertilizer materials, coupled with improvements in fertilizer technology, have placed added importance on the use of phosphoric acid as a starting material for high analysis phosphate fertilizers. This demand for phosphates and phosphoric acid must be met by increased production. Increased phosphoric acid production also brings increased demand for chemical processing agents including foam control agents. We at Arizona Chemical Company have closely followed the phosphate fertilizer industries needs. Arizona Chemical Company has been an important supplier of flotation agents to the phosphate industry, primarily from its Panama City, Florida plant. We have also recognized the important role played by foam control agents in the wet-phosphoric acid manufacturing process. We feel it is the responsibility of the supplier of foam control agents to offer specifically designed products that are highly efficient and economically useful. The difficulties involved in evaluating foam control agents in the plant are recognized. Owing to the large number of variables present, and the difficulties in controlling these variables during the period of a plant trial, plant evaluation of a large number of foam control agents is impractical. We have attempted to develop a practical, reproducible, and yet rapid, laboratory evaluation test which correlates with plant performance.

"There is always a demand in the mining industry to improve the safety and efficiency of roof bolting. Since 2008, Anglo American and Fletcher® have been working together to develop a new roof bolter concept that is safer and more ergonomic while maintaining current production rates. The recognized types of machines currently used in South Africa are always under constant review for improvement; however, there are limitations to the current design. The majority of the machines in South Africa are the “Man in Position” roof bolters. There are currently over 200 of these roof bolters in South Africa, with the bulk of the machines being twin-boom units. When operated correctly, these machines are safe, versatile, reliable and productive. However, with the operators located close to the drilling and bolting operations, they can be exposed to operational hazards. In addition, the major amount of material handling can be quite difficult on an operator. Anglo American, with a desire to improve safety, approached Fletcher to develop a remote style machine with simplified controls that maintained the productivity of the twin-boom machines. After several prototypes, the current model was developed. The chassis was designed for better operator comfort. A dual mast drill module was implemented to reduce the total time to bolt a cut. A remote operator’s station was incorporated to remove the operator from the front of the machine. The design was all about producing a safe and ergonomic machine from front to rear. This paper will explain the evolution and technological advancements from earlier prototypes to the current production machine. INTRODUCTION With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950’s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin)."
