As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

The Anaconda Minerals Company operates a molybdenite and copper producing mine and mill facility near Tonopah, Nevada. Included with the milling facility is a ferric chloride leach plant for removal of copper mineralization from the molybdenite concentrates. Discussed are the engineering and construction schedules associated with the leach plant. The chemistry associated with the process along with a description of the process flow, equipment, and operating parameters are contained in the paper.

The objectives of this generic study were to use numerical modeling techniques to determine under what conditions seismic waves generated by an earthquake might cause instability to an underground opening, or cause fracturing and joint movement that would lead to an increase in the permeability of the rock mass. In general, the study showed that moderate earthquakes (up to 0.41 g) did not cause instability of the tunnel or major fracturing of the rock mass. An artificial rock-burst tremor with high accelerations, however, was found to be amplified around the tunnel, and fracturing occurred as a result of the seismic loading in salt and granite. In shale, even moderate seismic loading resulted in tunnel collapse.

Geologists searching for carbonate rocks suitable for chemical uses traditionally have relied on extensive laboratory testing in order to locate strata or zones that might be suitable for mining. However, when considering the significant time and costs involved in sampling and performing chemical analyses, any exploration technique whereby fewer samples and analyses are needed would be of great value. In other words, if the exploration geologist could "zero-in" on select areas, considerable time and money could be saved. In general, the major-element chemistry of carbonate rocks is determined by the abundance of the minerals present. CaO occurs with CO2 as the mineral calcite, which is the primary mineral comprising allochems, matrix and sparry cement; MgO is found in high-magnesium calcite (many calcite fossil species contain appreciable amounts of MgO in solid solution), dolomite, and chlorite; iron occurs in pyrite and in limonitic stylolites, as well as in chloritic and glauconitic clay minerals; materials containing abundant Si02 are microcrystalline quartz (chest) silt-sized quartz, and clay minerals; and Al203 is found primarily in illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic clay minerals. The presence or absence of these minerals determines the chemical composition of the carbonate rooks.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying the Faraday's Law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. The investigation was extended to explore the interactions between a nonmagnetic sulfide mineral, pyrite, and abraded metal debris and their effects on the corrosive wear mechanism. The electrochemical behavior of a three-electrode system involving pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media was also investigated as a first step towards elucidating the nature of interactions that occur in the grinding of complex sulfide ores.

Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Vibrating screens and crushers are the workhorses of material sizing. Unfortunately their natural frequency is often in the range of typical supporting structures, thereby making installations prone to vibration problems. Much of the available literature regarding the support of vibrating screens is fairly confusing and outdated. This paper presents the results of utilizing accelerometers and finite element software in the analysis and design of supports for vibrating equipment. It contains data from field studies of vibrating screen and crusher installations, design of new and repair of existing supporting structures, and the correlation between field data and finite element time history analyses. Finally, the paper summarizes a method for analyzing and designing structures subjected to vibratory loads and predicting their behavior.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

"Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the reuse of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. Therefore, it is imperative to check the recirculation while designing and operating booster fan for a ventilation network. This paper deals with an algorithm based C++ program to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program was implemented to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine network. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

The effects of particle size, particle shape and degree of aggregation on n-dodecylamine flotation of -20 µ m quartz and glass beads were studied. A microflotation cell suitable for use with very fine particles was used in the flotation experimentation. Degree of agglomeration of particles was estimated by comparing size distributions of the quartz and beads in a dispersed system to size distributions in systems in which the collector was present. Results obtained show that in such flotation systems the fine particles are not generally present as individual particles during flotation but rather as aggregations. However, the quartz floats more readily than the beads indicating that there are some shape effects in the systems, considering the large specific surface areas of the materials it also appears that substantial amine consumption in the systems may limit flotation or lead to a requirement of greater reagent dosage for equivalent flotation to that tor larger particles.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

There have not been many opportunities to date for comparison between laboratory and commercial neutralization rinse data. Homestake Mining Company's Santa Fe project is one such comparison. This paper discusses laboratory procedures and results from a 100' leach pad height simulation column neutralization rinse test and compares principal data with that achieved in actual commercial leach pad neutralization rinsing procedures. Principal comparisons include the rate of WAD cyanide neutralization, decrease in effluent pH, stabilization of dissolved silver and copper, and the quantity of dissolved gold recovered during rinsing.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

This paper reported the calculation of the reaction heat in titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (abbreviated as TBFS)-H2SO4 system based on estimation of thermodynamic data of CaTiAl2O6 by mechanical mixture model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that CaTiAl2O6 was more stable than the corresponding ternary oxides as CaO·TiO2, CaO·Al2O3, and Al2O3·TiO2. TBFS-H2SO4 system was highly exothermic since all of the reactions involved in the system were exothermic. For example, the increase of temperature from 25 to 200°C led to the increase of the release of the reaction heat in TBFS (100.0g)-H2SO4 system from 181.28 to 189.73kJ. Eighty-five to 90%of the reaction heat in TBFS-H2SO4 system was contributed by the reactions among CaTiAl2O6, CaTiO3, CaMgSi2O6, and H2SO4.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012), and this research is being presented in a series of papers. The first paper (Park and Nelson, 2013a) identified the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects and was published in the October issue of Mining Engineering magazine. The second (Park and Nelson, 2013b) discussed methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables (published at www.me.smenet.org), and presented a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. This paper will present an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.
