"This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

"Excavation and initial support of the New Irvington Tunnel presented significant challenges, including rapidly changing ground conditions, heavy ground loads, and squeezing. Such behaviors were anticipated from historic tunneling records of the adjacent Existing Irvington Tunnel, and extensive site investigation, but clearer understanding of their actual extent and causes has resulted from convergence measurements, observations of ground behavior, initial support monitoring and detailed geologic mapping. Time-dependent movements, documented hours to months after excavation in clay-rich rock and in moderately to intensely fractured rock, identified squeezing areas, allowed classification by currently-used predictive methods and added to the list of lessons learned in tunneling such ground. INTRODUCTION In March 2003 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) authorized funding for the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade its water system. The program consists of 35 local projects located within San Francisco and 48 regional projects located in several counties from the Sierra foothills to the San Francisco Bay Area. The New Irvington Tunnel (NIT), a key component of the WSIP, is located east of Fremont in Alameda County, on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The NIT is a new 18,660 foot (5,689 m), redundant tunnel, 190 to 670 feet (58–204 m) offset from, and subparallel to the Existing Irvington Tunnel (EIT). Built between 1928 and 1932, the EIT was constructed with an unreinforced cast-in-place concrete lining and is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake along the two closest active faults. The Hayward Fault is located less than a mile west of the tunnel, and the Calaveras Fault is located half a mile east of the tunnel. Although the alignment does not intersect these faults, the shaking and sympathetic displacement along secondary faults that cross the tunnel alignment are potential hazards. The NIT provides a seismically reliable water transmission facility capable of withstanding earthquake damage and maintaining continuous water service after a major earthquake. The NIT also adds system redundancy and provides for operation flexibility of running water through both tunnels, or through one tunnel while the other is out of service for inspections and maintenance."

The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automatic control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool. A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic¬based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the "wish list" of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight utilizing uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made. This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content.

"The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using untreated rock dust and rock dust treated with an anticaking additive. Using personal dust monitors, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device IntroductionTwo recent regulations have modified operators’ rock dusting schedules in order to meet compliance standards. First, the 80 percent incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and out by the- section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent change to the respirable dust regulation has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only five samples were needed bimonthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule.The significant number of samples now required under new regulations, combined with the need to maintain 80 percent total incombustible content in active mining areas, require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to overlap. Although rock dust is considered a nuisance dust in relation to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) sampling, these overlapping schedules raise concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sample. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 effective Aug. 1, 2016, increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue (MSHA, 2016). Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application, or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower."

Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. "The Riyadh Metro Project forms part of a complete new public transport system integrated in the urban planning and development of the fast growing capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of a new metro network with 57 km of double track single tunnel infrastructures, spread over six metro lines. During the design phase, geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical site investigations were undertaken to chart the, previously uncharted, underground construction space. Different TBM solutions were selected for implementation taking due consideration of the ground conditions of each metro line. The results obtained from deep excavations for underground stations and analysis of the TBM tunneling data will be used as key input for future tunneling projects in the Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The present paper details the design conditions and presents the solutions for large diameter tunnels in karstic limestone. INTRODUCTION The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established in 1974 as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), established in 1983, is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city. The metro network is planned to be the backbone of the public transport system developed as part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport in Riyadh. With six lines and a total length of 176.5 km (Table 1) and 85 metro stations, the metro network will cover most of the densely populated areas, public facilities, and the educational, commercial and medical institutions. The network will connect the King Khalid International Airport, the King Abdullah Financial District, main universities, Riyadh downtown and the public transport center. The public transport plan includes a future bus network with 22 lines on 1200 km and 6765 stops that will be the main feeder for the Riyadh metro network; it will also be the main mode of transportation within and around Riyadh districts (ADA 2015)."

During the twentieth century the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range extends along an iron bearing outcrop known as the Biwabik formation. This outcrop is some 120 miles long and up to three miles wide. The formation is from 200 to 650 feet thick and dips 5 to 10 degrees to the southeast. The iron content of the original Biwabik formation was quite uniform, but much of this formation has been subjected to alteration. Thus major variations in iron content and mineral composition exist both laterally and vertically in the present Biwabik formation. The remaining unaltered iron formation includes the magnetic taconites which are commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons. per year of iron pellets and have produced approximately 170 million tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons per year of pellets is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by construction of new plants and expansion of present operations. Thus by 1977, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons per year of iron pellets will be produced from magnetic taconite on the Mesabi Range. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in the direct shipping, wash and heavy media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron for American steel mills. In 1966, 12 million tons of direct shipping ore and 18 million tons of wash, jig, heavy media and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range. These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite. It is predicted that the shipment of these materials will decrease from about 30 million tons in 1966 to 6 to 8 million tons in 1975. This decrease will be due to depletion of reserves and poor quality product.

"This paper discusses how an existing grey cast iron segmental tunnel lining responds to construction of a new SCL tunnel transversely beneath with zero clearance; how the damage assessment for the existing tunnel was conducted for impact of longitudinal movement; how the tunnel is subsequently instrumented to observe both movement and stress manifestation at its longitudinal connections and how the results from the instruments compare with the prediction. An assessment of neutral axis of the tunnel in longitudinal flexure is also explored using interpolated horizontal displacement data from a conventional monitoring system. INTRODUCTION The Royal Mail Tunnel (RMT) (formely Post Office Tunnel or ‘Mailrail’) was constructed using semi-mechanised deep level construction techniques from 1914 and 1917 (Lee 1938). Commencing full commercial operation in 1926, the system was until 2003; conveying parcels the 6.5 miles between seven sorting offices in the center of London, and linking the system with main line rail stations, Paddington and Liverpool Street (The British Postal Museum & Archive 2013). A single tunnel of 2.74m internal diameter facilitated a bi-directional twin narrow-gauge (~611mm gauge) railway road system for electric driverless operation. The tunnel lining is segmental grey cast iron (grade 10) made up of six flanged segments and a smaller flanged key segment; constructed into a ring of width 508mm The external diameter of the tunnel is 2.971m. For further details of the tunnel lining and material properties are outlined by (Devriendt & Alhaddad 2014).London Underground Bond Street Station is a major station of the London Underground system in the very center of London; in its vicinity, the RMT runs west-east perpendicularly above the north south Jubilee Line tunnels. Historic survey record of the Jubilee Line’s (the then Fleet Line) construction in 1974 and its impact on the RMT case is documented in (Crossrail 1993): it is one of only a hand full of case-studies frequently cited when assessing the impact of new construction scenarios of this type; not least including the assessment of the same tunnel, at the same site some 40 years later, and the subject material for this paper: It noted significant vertical displacement of ~90mm to the RMT without noticeable serviceability or operational impediment."

"Discrete event simulation (DES) is an appropriate framework for the plant-wide analysis of copper smelters. These smelters apply a common set of chemical reactions: copper-iron sulfides are blasted with oxygen-enriched air, sending the iron into a slag phase and the sulfur into the offgas. Moreover, conventional copper smelters exhibit similar operational dynamics: a smelting furnace operates continually, feeding into an alternating set of converters that produce batches of blister copper. The thermochemical and operational commonalities of copper smelters are integrated within the DES framework. This serves as a common basis to begin evaluating the system dynamics of individual smelters. For complex problems, the simulation framework should be developed in phases, incorporating feedback from different personnel who have complementary perspectives. Sample computations are provided in this paper based on the Hernán Videla Lira smelter, whose production is constrained by meteorological conditions. IntroductionWorld copper production is approximately 18.5 million t/y (Brininstool, 2015), worth $80 billion a year. Out of this total, 75 percent comes from the pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide minerals (Fig. 1), which occurs in copper smelters. The remaining 25 percent is from the hydrometallurgical treatment of oxides and complex ores (Rotuska and Chmielewski, 2008), which uses solvent extraction and electrowinning.The current paper describes the pyrometallurgical processing, recognizing that the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics are well known (Degterov and Pelton, 1999), with the notable exception of minor element transport, such as arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi), silver (Ag), gold (Au). The latter is an ongoing area of research, as smelters are faced with increasingly complex ores (Devia, Wilkomirsky and Parra, 2012; Swinbourne and Kho, 2012). This paper focuses on the system dynamics of copper smelter operations, which has received considerably less attention than the chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.Smelter engineers and managers may contribute to the sustainability of their plant by improving their understanding of operational system dynamics. Indeed, we have prompted smelter improvement projects (Navarra, 2016; Navarra et al., 2016; Navarra and Mendoza, 2013) simply by adapting methodologies that are commonly used in other sectors. These previous works incorporate principles from computer-integrated manufacturing (Groover, 2000) and theory of constraints (Dettmer, 2007), featuring the use of discrete event simulation (DES)."

"Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

A big issue in crushing and grinding operations in raw materials handling is high energy consumption and low breakage effectiveness. According to the Legendre [7], only 10% of energy input is directly consumed on the feed material breakage, while the remaining portion is dissipated in the form of heat and noise [8]. In the industry of limestone powder production, the grinding operations constitute integral part of technological circuits, and the energy consumption in operations of industrial comminution consume as high as 2% of world energy [14]. High-pressure grinding is the technology with proved energy benefits both in ore processing circuits and in limestone grinding. The promising results concerned mostly the achieved energy savings and good results of material breakage were achieved and demonstrated in numerous investigations [1,3,12]. However, it appears that a proper selection of operational parameters of the press devise, determination the feed material characteristics and adjustment of process course san be of a key-significance in improving an effectiveness the HPGR operation. Operational parameters of devices and process course should be verified towards the characteristics of the feed material, which mainly applies to the particle size and shape of the feed material and its moisture, and also mineralization in case of ores [2,4,9]. There are various investigations concerning an impact of the operational pressing force on comminution results which mostly refer to the determination of energy consumption and crushing ratio [5,6,10,13]. Investigations on the moisture content are less common, however their results suggest that, in general, the HPGR feed with higher moisture shows the tendency to higher comminution intensity, while the energy consumption increases together with increasing of feed material moisture. Investigations on olivine sand feed [11] showed that crushing ratio decreases for higher moisture, especially when the material is crushed at higher pressing force. HPGR devices, however, shouldn’t be regarded as a unique and perfect solution for comminution of each type of material. But they indeed may bring technological and economic benefits, comparing to conventional crushing and grinding machines, resulting in more favourable breakage of material particles and lower consumption of energy per unit mass of processed feed material.

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. "INTRODUCTION The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is a new rail line being constructed by the MTR Corporation for the Government of Hong Kong to cater for the growing passenger demand between the North-East New Territories and the urban areas of the city. Contract 1103, which will provide the 4 km of running tunnels between the new Hin Keng and Diamond Hill Stations, was tendered in a design-build framework and awarded to Vinci Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) in October 2012, with Arup as Vinci’s lead designer. One of the most challenging pieces of work on the contract involved the construction of 133m of SEM mined tunnel on the northern end of the project. The Northern Mined Section (NMS) is an undrained, twin-track, single bore profile, broken out through the southern pipe pile wall of the Hin Keng Station cut-and-cover box, Figure 1. The tunnel has maximum excavated dimensions of 14.5m span x 12m height, with track spacing of 6.175m. The general excavation sequence consisted of 3 stages; a 6m high top heading (73.1m2), followed by bench (27.3m2), and invert (26.7m2). A risk-based approach to the design was taken given the large variation in rock level, cover, and an active stream course above tunnel crown. Ultimately, six different temporary support types were utilized in order to optimize the construction process through continually changing ground while maintaining a safe and stable excavation. Three main support types were developed during the initial design phase, along with a “contingency” case, which utilized a partial heading excavation sequence and enhanced face support. The purpose of the contingency support type was to have a robust, engineered design available for immediate implementation should unexpected ground behavior develop, leading to the breaching of instrumentation trigger levels. This support type was never implemented on site. Drill- and-blast tunneling commenced once 6m of rock cover was verified through forward probing. A robust instrumentation and monitoring scheme provided valuable data throughout excavation and the means to carry out a geotechnical back-analysis of the ground behavior and support performance."

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) conducted laboratory testing of a self-tramming, remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) that J.H. Fletcher and Co. developed under a contract with NIOSH OMSHR to reduce the exposure of miners to airborne dust. The scrubber was found to average greater than 95 percent dust removal efficiency with disposable filters, and 88 and 90 percent, respectively, with optional washable filters in their prewash and post-wash test conditions. Although the washable filters can be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-min washing period. The scrubber’s velocity-pressure-regulated variablefrequency- drive fan maintained relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.42 and 4.25 m3/s (3,000 and 9,000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60-Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2,610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8,420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the scrubber showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier, and the loaded filters increased sound levels compared with clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters, the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6,000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level — under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 62.101— of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity. The scrubber’s washable filters were not used during field-testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated by filter washing. Field-testing the scrubber with disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it could clean a portion of the section return air and provide dust reduction of about 50 percent at the face area downstream of the continuous-miner operation.

"SUMMARY The importance of information management was recognised in surface construction industry decades ago, and has increasingly being recognised through formal process and laws. Around the world, these laws and codes of practice are currently being drafted and enacted, to reflect the development of software tools and corresponding increasing adoption by industry. This paper deals with specifics of implementing information modelling in tunnelling business utilising BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology developed for buildings as well as similar technology developed for mining industry. Although BIM is recognized initially as a 3D digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility, the real benefits come when complex capability through construction sequencing and even detailed programming (4D) and cost capabilities (5D) are included. INFORMATION MODELLING The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry requires the production of design and construction information, which involves the input from several teams. The tasks allocated to each team need to be carried out in a particular order and coordinated in order to benefit all those involved and the project itself; this is known as “collaborative working”. To ensure the quality, and guarantee that information can be used without change or interpretation, working processes and standards needs to be agreed upon or else it will hinder collaboration and have a negative impact on project delivery. Case studies show that the additional capital delivery costs due to uncoordinated, inaccurate and ambiguous information amounts to 20-25%. The solution to overcome these problems and improve collaborative working in a project is the adoption of BIM. It is a modern approach to the design, documentation, delivery, and life cycle management through the use of project information databases coupled with object-based parametric modelling. BIM requires traditional practices shifting from simple drafting to using 3D native models for building design environment. Additionally, it requires that models are equipped with information that has been traditionally decoupled in a text or other kinds of documents. The goal is not in creating a 3D graphic representation of design intent; rather, it is a comprehensive information management tool based on the simulation of design and construction build around a central repository."

"The Mined Tunnel is part of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (CWB), which is a strategic road along the northshore of Hong Kong Island targeted to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion. The objective of this paper is to review the performance of construction of a 160m long Mined Tunnel with a trinocular cross-section area of 460m3 and a combined span of about 50m underneath the southern approach ramp of the existing Cross Harbour Tunnel (CHT) by sequential excavation method (SEM) in hard rock. Mechanical excavation of tunnel by adopting the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), together with the application of NGI Q-system allows observational approach and optimization of temporary rock support design. Furthermore, the good performance of optimized rock support and the stability of CHT are confirmed through instrumentation monitoring review. This paper also discusses the selection of different tunnel plant and equipment to achieve the planned rates of tunnelling by mechanical excavation in competent granitic rock. INTRODUCTION The works of the CWB mainly comprise construction of 4.5km dual three-lane trunk road, of which a 3.7km section is a tunnel connecting Rumsey Street Flyover in Central to Island Eastern Corridor at North Point (see Figure 1). The Mined Tunnel runs from the ex-Public Cargo Working Area (ex-PCWA), underneath the existing CHT, and through the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. The Mined Tunnel passes at an oblique angle beneath the southern portal of CHT over a length of some 50m. CHT is the primary sensitive receiver of this project and is utilized with a daily throughput of about 120,000 vehicles that far exceeds the design capacity of 78,000 vehicles per day. Hence it is necessary to choose the most appropriate tunnelling method to preserve the structural integrity of the CHT. Other sensitive receivers in the vicinity include structures to the north of the Mined Tunnel, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC); and to the south of the Mined Tunnel, the Police Officers’ Club (POC)."

Federal and State sulfur oxide emission and ambient air quality regulations have been implemented to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970. Primary and secondary air quality standards have been established at levels considered necessary to assure the protection of the health and welfare of the public. Standards of performance under this Act have been established to control the rate of sulfur oxide emissions from individual sources so as to protect and to improve the quality of the Nation's air. The new source standards of performance were made rigorous for large coal burning stationary sources. This has had a severe impact on the electric utilities that operate the coal fired steam electric plants which are the largest consumers of the Nation's coal production. States have taken different approaches in State Implementation Plans (SIPS) as approved by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have chosen to permit moderate SO2 emission rates from existing sources which are not in critical air basins. All are required to meet primary and secondary air quality standards and to limit sulfur oxide emissions from new large stationary sources to a minimum of 1.2 LBS of S02/MMBTU fired. This re- quires a fuel sulfur percentage of about 0.7 for a 12,000 BTU/lb coal. In an effort to develop strategies and technologies to conform to performance standards while continuing and hopefully expanding the utilization of the Nation's coal supply, the electric utilities, the Federal and State regulatory agencies, and other industries and government agencies are considering several alternatives. 1. Natural low sulfur coal 2. Flue gas desulfurization - (FGD) non-regenerative and regenerative 3. Coal gasification 4. Liquefaction and solvent refined coal 5. Fluidized bed combustion 6. Chemical coal cleaning 7. Physical coal cleaning Of these options, only the first and the last can be considered to be widely used in full commercial practice at this time. FGD has certainly demonstrated technical and operating feasibility and is close to being in full commercial practice but it remains to be seen if the large systems under construction are economically and environmentally optimum.

"The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."
