More than 150 Mt (165 million st) of material crashed down at the Bingham Canyon Mine (Rio Tinto/Kennecott Utah Copper) near Salt Lake City, UT on April 10, 2013. The mine, one of the largest openpit mines in the world, ceased operations and evacuated personnel prior to the slide when it was discovered that material was moving at a rate of 5 cm/d (2 in./day). The slide destroyed the mine?s visitor?s center, buried several pieces of large mining equipment and severely hampered production. The Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. immediately began to assess the damage and look for options to reestablish operations. The highly unstable ground ? emphasized by another minor slide in September 2013 ? makes any cleanup efforts extremely dangerous. With terrain too dangerous for human operators, Kennecott was forced to look for alternatives that would help the company work on the treacherous slopes of the landslide while also keeping personnel safe.

Finely disseminated iron ores compose much of today's reserves. After removing the silicate gangue, the resulting fine iron oxide concentrates require pelletization with a binder to enable transportation and reduction. Binders can be used more efficiently if their binding mechanisms can be completely understood. Typically, bentonite clay is needed as a binder to improve the strength of the pellets. Bentonite is an effective binder at a relatively low cost, but costs could be reduced further by replacing bentonite with even lower-cost binders, such as high-carbon Fly-Ash Based Binder (FBB). In this study, it was found that bentonite binds by a physical mechanism, while FBB binds by a chemical mechanism. These mechanisms were determined to be incompatible. Partial replacement of either binder with the other reduced dry magnetite pellet compressive strengths below the industrially acceptable value of 22.2 newtons (5 lbf). Activators and accelerators that activated the fly-ash deactivated the bentonite. The incompatibility of these two binders is explained.

This work investigated the effect of the concentration of CO2 and lead contamination on the forest ecosystem. Changes of the plant growth, lead concentration in soil, plant, and soil microbial community caused by CO2 concentration (380 ppm and 760 ppm) and lead contamination (500 mg/kg) were measured. Plant growth was inhibited by 50% due to lead contamination. Particularly, shoot growth was inhibited more than the root. However, the root elongation was not affected by the CO2 concentration increase. The diversity of microbial population with AWCD (Average Well Color Development) and PCA (Principle Component Analysis) showed that the lead contamination has an effect com-pared to CO2 concentration. The Shannon index calculated from DGGE profiles was high in soil with Pinus densiflora, while the effect of CO2 concentration was not significant (P<0.5). The similarity of microbial community from each treatment showed that lead has an effect on plant growth and microbial community rather than the CO2 concentration.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Copper mining is the main activity in Zambia and is confined to the large scale operations, mainly on the Copperbelt. The Copperbelt covers an area of size l00km by 50 km with a total of 10 underground and 5 open-pit mines operated by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) Limited. Most of the operations in these mines involves drilling and blasting. The loading of broken materials is by both manual and mechanical operations. Among the many risk factors associated with mining on the Copperbelt, is the occurrence of Pneumoconiosis which in the recent past has become quite prevalent and thus an important occupational health hazard for the industry. This study was carried out with the aim of establishing trends of pneumoconiosis incidence through the annual data collected by Pneumoconiosis Medical and Research Bureau of the Ministry of Health in Zambia, so that a basis could be formed for future research work. The Divide mining district occupies the center of a Tertiary caldera hosting the famous Divide silver lode and the crosscutting Gold Mountain mines. The northwest-southeast trending silver lode hosted ore with typically a 100:1 silver:gold ratio, high molybdenum content and argillic alteration dated at 16.5 m.y. within the Fraction Tuff. The east-west trending Oddie Rhyolite flow dome at Gold Mountain experienced possibly several periods of resurgence with repetitive silicification, brecciation and attendant precious metal deposition forming stockwork type mineralization. Silver-gold ratios average 10:1 for the mineralization phase of this 16.4 m.y. intrusive event. Similar chalcedonic mineralization registering a 3:1 silver:gold ratio cements conformable breccias within the Oddie Rhyolite basal flows unconformably overlying the Siebert Tuff on the northern flanks of Gold Mountain. Gray and red chalcedonic breccia matrix in the King Tonopah member of the Fraction Tuff contains a 50:1 silver :gold ratio.

Stuart Olson Construction, Inc. excavated 385m (1263 ft.) long twin tunnels with 6.25m (20.5 ft.) O.D., a portal and a cross-over for the Edmonton, "Metro". The work for Contract No. 76458, SLRT South Tunnel and Portal, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was performed in 1989 and 1990. NATM was specified because of the instability of glacial deposits. The contractor decided to use "two firsts" on this project: Fully mechanized NATM and a novel excavator¬mounted tunneling machine. An excavator was equipped with a cutter boom, and a loading and conveying system. This novel machine cost only about one-third of the price of a special NATM roadheader. This new combination of NATM and an excavator-mounted cutter boom offered a cost-effective alternative to shields, slurry TBMs and roadheaders for short tunnels in unstable ground. For NATM tunneling in hard rock or in mixed faces, the roadheader-type cutter boom can be replaced with an impact hammer (hydraulic breaker).

Virginia Electric and Power Company commencing in early 1985 will begin operating the Bath County Pumped Storage hydroelectric facility, presently the largest capacity installation of its kind. Six concrete lined vertical shafts, 3 ea x 44.0 ft (13.4m) diam x 330 ft (100m) and 3 ea x 28.5 ft (8.7m) diam x 740 ft (226m), comprise a portion of the three underground power conduits. The project team decided to employ the slipform over the conventional jump form method. This selection was based on the engineer&apos;s hydraulic design and the contractor&apos;s performance requirements. This paper presents the key elements of the shafts&apos; successful slipform operations. The contractor achieved slip rates as high as 60 ft (18m) per day; and the owner received competent permanent linings as specified by the engineer. The authors describe the team&apos;s effort to progressively improve both concrete quality and placement rate.

Volcanogenic base metal ores contain about 0.5 to 7 g/T Au, commonly as an intermetallic compound with Ag and/or Hg, and to a small extent • "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase (electrum, Au-Ag-Hg alloy, etc.) generally occurs as fracture fillings in pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, and rarely • minute inclusions in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase in fractures generally occurs • small grains, and is frequently associated with galena, tetrahedrite and other late minerals. The gold is readily liberated from fractures and recovered by flotation in Ca concentrates. Copper concentrates usually recover around 60% of the gold when the ore grade is around 3 g/t. Higher recoveries are obtained for higher ore grades, and lower recoveries for lower grade ores. Lead and zinc circuits act as scavengers for gold, and recover all the exposed gold attached to small particles. Only unliberated gold, "invisible gold" and very minute gold grains attached to large particles are lost to tailings.

This paper re-examines the mixing conditions in the collection zone of flotation columns. These have in the past been characterized with a single uniaxial dispersion coefficient, E. The relationship between E and column diameter, Dc, is examined based on residence time distributions (RTDs) in columns of Dc ranging from 5.lcm to 184cm. Results agree with published correlations in chemical engineering, i.e. E a Dc &apos;" , Data explain why pilot columns display significant upgrading between the feed level and the interface, whereas plant columns do not. It also suggests that, for plant columns, the full collection zone (up to the interface) can be considered when calculating the residence time. A mathematical model considering two regions of different mixing was compared to the single E model. Both models adequately fitted measured age distributions inside the column and overall RTDs. Measured and simulated mixing characteristics are compared to those of flotation banks, using a tanks-in-series approach; banks of comparable mixing to columns are identified.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

In the same way that a blueprint communicates information about a structure, a useful systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of computing systems. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where in the "bigger picture" a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: 1. The primary purpose of computer based systems relative to particular task or operation. 2. The relationship of systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies. 3. The relationship of systems relative to the organization and its objectives. 4. Indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allocated to support the organization. 5. The overall context in which new systems and technologies can be assessed for both their impact on current system and on the organization itself.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is less effective in recovering very fine (<15 μm) or very flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 μm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit, or when sulphide content is low. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm 3), especially from coarser gangue.

The new tunnel at Genting Sempah is part of a privately funded infrastructure projectthat involves duplicating the existing highway extending from the Gombok Toll Plaza near Kuala Lumpur to Karak, in Malaysia. The 60 km long tollway includes an 800 m long, two-lane highway tunnel with excavated dimensions of 10.5 m wide by 8 m high. The majority of the tunnel extends through slightly to moderately weathered, moderately to highly jointed quartz porphyry. Excavation of the tunnel was performed using drill and blast methods and the primary tunnel support consists of rock dowels and shotcrete except for short sections adjacent to the portals where steel sets were utilized. A portion of the tunnel encountered sheared and altered material that was successfully supported using rock dowels and shotcrete. The final lining for the tunnel consists of mesh and fiber reinforced shotcrete. The flexible nature of the primary support and shotcrete final lining resulted in considerable cost savings and expedient construction methods.

Cyprus Sierrita produces copper and molybdenum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, AZ. Both pits were started in the late 1960s and are more than 460 m (1500 ft) deep. Sierrita has used a Caterpillar 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase safety and profits at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, the 992C had produced additional profits of more than $1.5 million. Safety and Geotechnical The safety of Cyprus personnel and equipment is always of prime concern. The remote controlled loader removes personnel from the active raveling area. But it requires prudent operation. Gold Fields-Mesquite is a 7.5 million ton per year heap leach operation located in the Maj ave Desert of Southeastern California. Extraction of gold is carried out on multiple lifts, with over 33.3 million tons of ore leached since the inception of operations in 1985. The delineation of the gold left in heap residue is a formidable task. Gold removed from active leach areas can be routinely monitored through sampling of emerging solutions but exact recoveries from specific heaps remains nebulous due to factors such as cross flow between sections buffering effects from multiple lifts, and releaching. In order to better quantify ultimate heap recoveries and increase releach efficiency, Mesquite initiated a residue drilling program. The project progressed through an evaluation of sampling protocol, drilling of residue by reverse circulation, entry of assays into a software package capable of producing grade-based contour maps, and a production scale releach test that evaluated the system's ability to predict residue grade.

The Eureka Mine is situated in the Guruve district of Zimbabwe, some 150 km north of Harare. The mine was first worked in 1895 and until recently was operated as a typical Zimbabwean "smallworking" with a single owner­operator and small labour force mining at up to 50m depth and processing 50 tonnes per day of ore via grind, gravity recovery and CIP. The gravity circuit comprised a Knelson 12" Centre discharge Concentrator from which a significant but variable portion of production was recovered. In 1996 exploration was commenced by Delta Gold Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (DGZ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Gold NL of Australia, with the aim of testing mineralisation and establishing a large-scale open pit operation. A feasibility study was completed in April 1998. Construction began in August 1998 and first gold was poured in June 1999. The mine is designed to produce 65 000 oz/annum of gold from 1.5 million tonnes of opencast ore grading 2 git Au.

The bacterial oxidation (BIOX®) process for pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery is marketed by BIOMIN Technologies S.A. The process was originally developed by GENMIN who are still providing testwork, design and commissioning assistance to BIOMIN. This process offers an alternative to the more conventional roasting or pressure oxidation techniques with the following advantages: • Greatly reduced capital costs for small to medium size plants. • A relatively flexible and easily controllable process requiring relatively unskilled labour for operation. • Improved gold recovery. • A process that is environmentally friendly. The principal disadvantage of bacterial oxidation is the relatively slow kinetics compared to pressure oxidation and roasting, a plant residence time of 4 to 5 days typically being required to obtain complete liberation of gold from refractory sulphide minerals. Bacterial activity is also slow to recover from disruptions such as air supply failure or contamination by toxic species such as cyanide. Optimum plant performance depends on judicious management and sound training of operators.

The Fabian ore body near Malmberget, Sweden, has an ore reserve of 5 Mt of predominately low grade iron ore, containing 40-55% Fe. Mining began in 1971 with a new method called slot block caving. About 2 Mt were mined, but poor fragmentation resulted in too much secondary blasting. This decreased mucking efficiency to such an extent that the method was abandoned after only 40% of the ore volume had been mined. At this stage a large stope (180 x 30 x 100 m) had been excavated. Although the exposed area was quite large, no caving action occurred in the hanging wall or in the ceiling. LKAB decided in 1977 to introduce sublevel stoping using 105-mm-diam holes. This was the first time large diameter holes were used underground in Sweden. The method had been evaluated in collaboration with the University of Luleå (LuH), the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation (SveDeFo), and the Swedish Mining Research Foundation.
