The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

Complex and distinct geological units spread along the 7-mile long 30-ft inside diameter Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project in Detroit, Michigan. Its construction is divided in two tunnel construction packages: The South Tunnel, to be driven in finely laminated weak TG Limy Shale, will be excavated by a shielded TBM with precast concrete segmental lining, while the North tunnel, predominantly in a relatively more competent geologic formation Antrim Shale, will be excavated by a main beam TBM with a two-pass lining system. The adits and deaeration chambers will be excavated by sequential excavation method. This paper addresses the process of selecting excavation methods and lining systems for shafts, tunnels, connecting adits, and deaeration chambers.

The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

The Ute-Ulay project area is located approximately five miles west of Lake City, in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The Ute-Ulay Mine site is approximately one mile east of the project area. The elevation of the site is 9,200 feet and is adjacent to Henson Creek (Figure 1) [ ] The Ute-Ulay Mining complex is an inactive gold, silver, and zinc mining/milling operation, that operated from the 1880?s until the 1970?s, and sporadically into the late 1990?s. The mining complex comprises several levels of underground mines, a flotation mill, and an abandoned town site. Due to the narrow, steep sided canyon, milled tailings were pumped upstream one mile in a sluice box to a wider section of the canyon, and deposited into five tailings impoundments and one berm located between the impoundments. An estimated 9,000 cubic yards (yd3) of fine grained tailings were located in the impoundments adjacent to the creek. The Ute-Ulay project area consisted of the mill tailings impoundments located upstream from the historic mine.

In December of 2007, a joint venture of J.F Shea, Skanska and Schiavone referred to as S-3II, was awarded a $1.15 billion (? 886,880,000) contract to construct the run-ning tunnels and station structures for the Number 7 Line Extension Project in New York City by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) and New York City Transit (NYCT). As part of the contract, a technically complex and critical connection of the new tunnel to the existing, operational 7 Line subway was required. This paper describes the innovative design approach that was conceived to carry out the underpinning and excavation works both within the east-west 7 Line subway tunnel and beneath the north-south, 4 track, 2 level Times Square Station for the A, C & E trains. This underpinning provided temporary support to the subway substructure as the grade of the tunnel invert was lowered up to 10 feet (3 meters) into the rock sub-grade to allow the future subway to pass under the basement of the world?s busiest bus terminal. In addition, the creation of a new portal connecting the existing subway tunnel and the subterranean level of the Port Authority Bus Terminal by means of underpinning structural footings and horizontal spiling/poling of existing ground will be discussed.

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

This paper summarizes the weight of epidemiological evidence to evaluate the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers as suggested by Selikoff in an early study of insulation workers. This review looks at populations that develop GI cancers, namely stomach, colorectal, colon and rectal. Guidelines for assessing causality are strength of association, biological gradient and consistency of the associations. Exposure?response (E?R) was evaluated using three methods to estimate exposure. Rate Ratios (RRs) for lung cancer and percent of mesothelioma are used as surrogate measures of asbestos exposure for all the cohorts of exposed workers. Quantitative or semi-quantitative estimates of cumulative exposure to asbestos were also used to assess E?R trends and were compared to E?R trends for lung cancer and mesothelioma in individual studies. Surrogate measures are important since there are few individual studies that have assessed E?R. None of the various methods to estimate asbestos exposure yielded consistent E?R trends and the strength of the associations were consistently weak or non-existent for the four types of GI cancers. The epidemiological evidence detracts from the hypothesis that occupational asbestos exposure increases the risk of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancer. Several thousand years ago, metallurgists discovered that by combining two relatively soft metals, copper and tin, they could make a new material, bronze, that was stronger than either metal separately. Bronze and other alloys show how different materials can be integrated to create something new and better. Today?s mining industry can likewise find benefit in an integrated approach to managing the external impacts it has through its waste materials and its use of water. Just as using bronze gave ancient nations an economic and military advantage, mining companies can gain competitive advantage through finding better ways to manage water and waste. Trends pushing this include: ? Environmental ? Regulations on water-taking and the quality of discharged water are becoming more stringent. Net zero discharge requirements are often imposed by regulators. Mining companies also come under pressure to manage environmental impacts of mine waste, including minimizing the area occupied by waste and seepage amount resulting from infiltration of water from a smaller surface area. ? Social ? Particularly in arid parts of the world, there are multiple possible uses for each gallon of water. Local residents do not want to see a reduction in supplies of water for agricultural, domestic, manufacturing and other purposes. They get suspicious about any potential impact of water being mixed with their water reservoirs if it comes from a mining site, even if it would be treated. Such suspicions may cause conflicts among the stake-holders and delays in project approval processes.

Coal is currently cleaned with the minimum of size reduction, fine particle processing, recovery, and tailings disposal are major problems. Adequate water resources are not always available. For example, two thirds of China's coal is located in arid areas. Hence, dry separation provides an alternative approach. Of the dry coal separation methods available, air dense-medium fluidized beds have been used to separate 50~6mm coal efficiently. However, excessive bubbling and back mixing of the separated solids in the air-dense media fluidized bed causes the high lower size limit of 6mm for the feed material, this affecting the preparation efficiency. Based on prior study on air-fluidized dense media for 6~50mm coal preparation, this paper presents methods and test results on the fine coal dry classification, static electricity beneficiation of 0~0.5mm coal, and magnetically stabilized fluidized beds for separating 0.5~6mm coal.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays on face methane levels. Testing was conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery which was designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the test entry, a model mining machine, equipped with water sprays and a simulated dust scrubber, was located at the face of a 20-ft box cut. Blowing ventilation was provided using a curtain with a 40-ft setback distance. Methane released from a pipe manifold located inby the mining machine was monitored at six locations that were 1 ft outby the pipe manifold. Tests were first conducted to evaluate the effects of using sprays and scrubber separately on face methane levels. Additional tests were conducted to determine how a scrubber used with various water spray systems would affect face methane levels. The use of either sprays or scrubber reduced face methane levels significantly. The combined use of sprays with the scrubber further reduced face methane levels a small amount. Primarily the sprays affected methane levels by changing airflow distribution close to the face.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures to the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study which determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system which was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, being a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels comparing outside to inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system?s efficiency. Testing using particle count instruments performed during non-production time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated Protection Factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

The behavior of gold in a conventional copper electrorefinery anode slimes treatment process is expounded on in this study. In the raw anode slimes generated in a copper electrorefinery, gold occurs mainly as tiny particles of metallic gold, which are commonly attached to selenide particles. Some gold is also present in selenide form. Decopperizing the anode slimes retains much of the metallic gold, but also promotes the incorporation of gold in the structure of silver-rich selenide species. A greater fraction of the gold is converted to (Ag,Au)2Se or Ag3AuSe2 when high-Se and high-Ag anode slimes are decopperized at elevated temperatures and pressures. After pelletization and roasting of the slimes, the gold is converted to a (Ag,Au)-alloy and Ag3AuSe2. Smelting of the roaster products eliminates the selenium and converts the gold to a silver-rich (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the dore metal. In the subsequent silver electrorefining process, gold collects as a gold-rich (Au,Ag,Pd)-alloy in the gold mud. Dore smelting rejects many impurities as a silica slag; minor amounts of gold are present as a (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the silica slag. This gold is recovered by flotation and is recycled to the dore furnace. Gold is identified in both the tellurium caustic leach residue and the parting plant wash water mud as tiny particles of metallic gold. These products are also recycled to the dore furnace to recover their gold values.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.
