Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. A review of current mine underground environmental performance is also provided

This study evaluates the roof-bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) system in an exhausting face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. Two scenarios are considered: (1) a roof-bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof-bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment that contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by an exhaust curtain with 9,000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air to simulate the roof-bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8 percent. When the roof bolter is operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection, as the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5 percent. Increasing CAC airflows to 350 cfm (0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm (0.21 m3/s) were evaluated, demonstrating that dust reductions increased to 59.7 percent (350 cfm) and 72.0 percent (450 cfm). These results revealed improvement in respirable dust reductions compared to the CAC airflows at 250 cfm when the bolter is operated close to the face, showing the CAC can provide protection against high respirable dust concentrations for roof-bolter operators.

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

Geologic maps are indispensable tools in the modern search for mineral and fossil-fuel resources. They are the first essential step in understanding the lithologic nature and structure of rock units that form the land surface and that lie beneath it. They provide the basic foundation for planning mineral resource exploration programs and form the superstructure from which subsurface investigations are projected. In view of the economic application of such maps, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Government entered a formal agreement in 1960 to map Kentucky geologically on a scale of 1:24, 000, or one inch map distance equals 2,000 feet on the ground. A 7. 5-minute quadrangle would comprise the unit map area. A resolution which urged the preparation of a new geological map of the entire State was passed by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers in February 1959, and was presented to the Governor of Kentucky, the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Department of Economic Development (now Department of Commerce), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Kentucky Geological Survey with a request for support and action. The request was subsequently endorsed and actively supported by numerous civic and professional societies as well as representatives of various facets of Kentucky government, commerce, and industry. Monies to initiate the program were appropriated by the next session of Kentucky legislature; this appropriation was matched by federal funds (Hagan, 1961). Kentucky's state-wide topographic mapping project was completed in 1956, just four years prior to starting the geologic mapping program. The recently completed modern 7. 5-minute, 1:24,000 topographic maps made ideal bases for plotting areal geology. Had they not been available, it is doubtful if a geo- logic mapping program so large and comprehensive could have been undertaken.

This paper describes the design, equipment selection and onshore fabrication of the largest facilities module ever installed in a single lift in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring 35.5 x 70.1 x 21.3 m (110 x 230 x 70 ft), the three operating level structure houses Frasch process sulfur mining equipment and weighed nearly 49 million N (5500 tons) during lift. An operating weight of over 74 million N (8300 st) combines with bridge reactions acting on the in-place module and results in a total operating vertical load on the supporting platform deck of about 107 million N (12,000 tons). A Vierendeel truss structural system was selected for framing the module to allow maximum equipment access and routing flexibility for complex, insulated large diameter process piping. Research and finite element analysis of crimp plate siding behavior in shear was carried out during selection of siding type for the module. An interactive design sequence was carried out that incorporated in-place operational criteria, onshore fabrication considerations, complex process equipment requirements, plus load-out, ocean transport and offshore lift analyses. Project schedule dictated that design, procurement and fabrication be fast-tracked with parallel activities accelerated to the maximum extent possible. Design and construction of this largest and most complex module was done concurrently with 52 other components of the project including jackets, decks, process and living quarters modules as well as two 122 x 22 m (400 x 72 ft) sulfur tankers. Total tonnage of steel structures for the project exceeded 90.7 kt (100,000 st). The 5 kt (5500 st) mining module proved the viability and costeffectiveness of larger modules than commonly used in Gulf of Mexico waters. This technical advance can be matched with economic opportunity for other large-scale offshore installations.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

LOCATION AND EXTENT OF BART TUNNELS The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) during the past six years has become the Owner of 23.5 miles of single-bore tunnels. The tunneling experience gained while working closely with our Engineer and Contractors in the design and construction of these major transit facilities provides a basis for our "Owners" viewpoint. The 23.5 miles of tunnels are divided into two categories. Fifteen and one-half (15-1/2) miles of tunnels were constructed in soft ground underlaying the downtown areas of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Eight (8) miles of tunnels were built in "hard ground" in the hills separating Oakland and Berkeley from Contra Costa County and in the San Francisco hills on the Mission Line. Location of tunnels within the BART system are shown on Figure 1. The tunnels comprise 15.7% of BART's 75-mile dual track system. Their 176 million dollar costs (excluding rail, electrification or ventilation features) are 12.4% of the system's total estimated cost of $1.4 billion. The tunnels constructed in soft ground were shield and boring machine driven with ground support provided by steel liner rings. The exterior diameter is 17 foot, 6 inches in the majority of tunnels; however, on two tunnels with a 500 foot radius of curvature, the diameter was 18 feet. BART awarded 14 contracts for soft ground tunneling. The work was accomplished under free air or compressed air depending upon the ground water and soil conditions, safety requirements, and considerations for protecting adjoining property from damage either from the de-watering operations or settlements due to excavation. Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (United States, Canada), better geological prospects (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This article does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly, which is multinational in character. Nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free trade treaty will reverse that investment flow. Cross-border investments The following examples should dispel any doubts about the significance of cross-border investment in the Pacific Rim. This report is based on experience developed on the construction of one contract for the Buffalo, New York subway. The Buffalo subway is under construction for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and is called the LRRT-Light Rail Rapid Transit or more commonly the Metro. The Initial Route of the Buffalo subway construction started early in 1979 and is scheduled for completion in May, 1984. The initial system includes 5.2 miles of underground construction, 1.3 miles at grade for a total of 6.5 miles of subway system. A total of fourteen stations, eight underground and six at grade are included on the system. The Initial Route has a planned expansion to 17.3 miles in the future. On January 15, 1979, a Joint Venture of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, James McHugh Construction Co., Chicago, Illinois, and Kenny Construction Company, Wheeling, Illinois, was awarded contract 100031, the Line Tunnels from Amherst Street to South Campus in northcentral Buffalo between Delaware Park and the State University, (see Fig. 1, Location Plan) This $35,000,000.00 contract was designed by Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Buffalo, N.Y. The Notice to Proceed was issued January 15, 1979 and the scheduled completion date is August 18, 1981. The project consists of two parallel rock tunnels with a minimum excavated diam of 18 ft 0 in. and a final concrete lining of 16 ft 0 in. diam. The tunnels total 14,630 linear ft. In addition to the tunnels, contract C-31 includes four shafts, an underground pump station, three cross passage connections, and other minor work items. INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

Because of the Chilean Ministry of Mining's interest in the development of industrial minerals, the Chilean Geological and Mining Service (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería, SERNAGEOMIN) has carried out a research program during the last two years to identify projects that represent interesting investment opportunities for small- to medium-scale operations in Chile. Most important of these projects are: (1) Quebrada Lluta aluminum sulphate, for drinking- and industrial-water treatment, with a potential domestic and foreign mar- ket of almost 43,000 tonnes per year and investments of about US$1.8 million; (2) Quebrada Lluta-Quebrada Cardones pumice, for abrasives, filters, fillers, and light- weight aggregates, with a potential market of about 30,000 tonnes per year, and in- vestments of US$2.0 million; (3) El Maule dolomite, for soil conditioner and iron smelting, with a total potential domestic market of some 60,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2.0 million; (4) Las Escaleras bentonite, for animal feed, pelletising, and oil absorbents, with a potential market of almost 6,000 tonnes per year, and investments of about US$2.4 million; (5) Laraquete-Carampangue andalucite, for alumina refractories, with a future total domestic and foreign demand of about 15,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2-2.5 million; (6) Rio Lía garnet, for fillers and sand-blasting abrasives, whose domestic market represents 10,000 tonnes per year, with investments of US$2.3 million; and (7) Munilque pumice, for building bricks and panels, with a potential domestic market of 250,000 tonnes per year, and investments of US$1.4 million. The development of these projects will represent an important increase and a significant diversification in Chilean industrial-minerals production.

Barite Worldwide barite production for 1985 decreased 1.3%, while US barite production increased 1.4%, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The increase in US production is attributed to heavy demand for oil and gas drilling during the first quarter and an unrealized heavy expected demand in oil and gas markets for the last quarter. Nevada accounted for 82.1% of the 807 kt (890,000 st) of barite produced in the US last year, according to the Bureau. Other producing states were California, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, and Washington. In 1985, the US imported 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite and 64 kt (71,000 st) of ground barite. China led the way with 43.3% of the total. Imports from India accounted for 21.6%; Morocco, 15.5%; and Thailand, 5.6%. The 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite imported is an 18.8% increase over 1984. Apparent consumption of barite for 1985 was about 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st), a 15.7% increase from 1984. Due to very low drilling rig activity during the last quarter of 1985, actual consumption is probably less as crude barite inventories at mines and plants increased. According to the Bureau, 90% of barite consumed in 1985 was for the oil and gas market. Paints, rubber, glass, and other chemical uses consumed the other 10%. With the price of oil falling dramatically early in 1986, the outlook for oil and gas drilling looks to be significantly lower than 1985. This lower demand for barite, coupled with the high year-end inventories, should lower both imports and domestic production. Significant lower prices on imported barite are expected, especially from China, Morocco, and India. This also could further lower US production of barite this year.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of particles. This paper will focus on the results for respirable quartz particles that occur in underground coal mines across the U.S. The relationship between the amount of surface-available quartz and coal seam rank is well established for Pennsylvania

The more important factors controlling the design of pit slopes are related to the local geology over which the designer has little or no control. Nevertheless, there are some factors over which the designer does exert some control and these concern the say in which the rock is excavated and supported. They include blasting, face cleaning, water control, and the use of rock improvement techniques. The paper discusses these factors and relates the extra costs incurred to the steeper slope angles that can usually be obtained. It is demonstrated that even a modest increase in bench angle of 5° through improved excavation techniques can pay off in a single push-back.

The major copper loss at Mount Lyell is in the coarsest particles presented to flotation. An analysis of data collected from the five primary and six secondary ball mill circuits showed that grinding was limited by low breakage rates in secondary mills, possibly due to oversize balls. For 5 months, the make-up ball size for one secondary mill was reduced from 50 to 30 mm. Frequent steady-state tests indicated that overall average breakage rates could be increased by about 70% using smaller balls. A mathematical simulation of the whole circuit with increased breakage rates showed that the resultant finer grind was likely to improve copper recoveries by about 22.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

Magnetic separation employing superconducting technology is now accepted within the Kaolin processing industry, proving the value of this technology and its ability to operate reliably even at the most remote site. Developments in superconducting magnet engineering, including cryogen free operation, combined with experience in mineral processing enables new forms of Wet and Dry superconducting magnetic separation to be developed. Applying the high magnetic force advantages at 5 T else available from such magnets to other materials is now a reality.
