INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

The chemistry and structure-activity relationships for four new classes of sulfide mineral and precious metals collectors developed recently are discussed in this paper. These collector classes are alkoxycarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates and thioureas, dialkyl (or diaryl) monothiophosphates and dialkyl monothiophosphinates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for various minerals on the basis of data on kinetics of adsorption on pure minerals, natural ore flotation and microscopy of flotation concentrates. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with the available data on the FTIR and solution chemistry studies.

This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

Early Models In 1906, Daniel Jackling demonstrated that relatively low-grade disseminated copper deposits could be mined profitably using mass mining technology. The ensuing years saw a gradual increase in activity aimed at defining ore targets for large reserves of disseminated supergene enriched copper ores. Prominent organizations, such as Calumet and Hecla, Phelps Dodge, and Asarco, established teams of geologists. They focused on interpreting oxidized and leached outcrops over supergene chalcocite ore bodies. Techniques to evaluate oxidized cappings and predict the presence of underlying supergene chalcocite enrichment ores were developed and put to practical use by the late 1920s and early 1930s (Locke, 1926; Blanchard 1939, 1968). Oxidized capping evaluation centered on recognizing oxidation products derived from the various sulfide minerals found in disseminated deposits. Chalcopyrite, for example, oxidizes to a characteristic reddish pitch limonite that exhibits characteristic boxworks. Chalcocite is recognized by earthy, powdery, indigenous, hematite-rich limonite. Pyrite weathers to characteristic cavities and yellowish jarositic limonites. Evaluation of cappings is a systematic effort of noting and estimating the preoxidation sulfide mineral content and copper grade in an oxidized outcrop using mineral composition and morphology of oxidation products. Several complications were noted early in this technology's development. For example, the associated pyrite content of protore greatly influences mobility of copper and iron during oxidation. High-pyrite disseminated sulfide assemblages, upon oxidation, mobilize iron as well as copper. This results in oxidized rock with many leached cavities, poorly developed boxworks, and poorly developed indigenous limonites. This effect was noted and used in a general way to identify possible development of supergene chalcocite. Indeed, strongly leached outcrops could be present over enriched ore. A second complication is the manner in which associated gangue minerals influence the products of sulfide oxidation. Reactive gangue minerals, such as carbonates, neutralize acids formed by sulfide oxidation. Thus, copper cannot be moved from oxidized outcrops. Relatively nonreactive gangue, such as quartz-sericite-altered schist or porphyry, neutralizes supergene acid very slowly. This allows copper to move out of the oxidized outcrop. Recognizing these features was closely allied to an early understanding of the processes involved in oxidation supergene enrichment of disseminated ores. Field observations and mineralogic mapping of oxidized cappings were important in discovering many important porphyry copper ore bodies during the 1920s. These include Silver Bell, Miami-Inspiration, and Morenci in Arizona; Tyrone, NM; and Ely, NV. Capping interpretation like-wise led to discoveries at Mineral Park and Esperanza in Arizona during the exploration surge that accompanied high copper prices in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Kennecott research geologists refined and quantified some aspects of oxide capping appraisal (Anderson, 1982). The ratio of jarosite plus hematite to the total limonite assemblage was shown to be proportional to amount of copper leached from the oxidized outcrop. Thus, if the limonite assemblege in an oxidized capping consists of 40% goethite, 20% jarosite, and 40% hematite, 60% of the original copper is leached. The amount of copper remaining in the capping, together with the limonite mineralogy, can then be used to estimate original copper grade in the outcrop, amount of leaching, and chalcocite enrichment grade (in feet/% copper) in the underlying supergene chalcocite zone (Anderson, 1982). Evaluation of oxidized cappings and prediction of chalcocite blanket ore targets were successfully used in the western US and South America through the 1950s. Discovery of new porphyry copper provinces in other regions during the 1950s and 1960s, however, underscored some limitations of capping evaluation technology. Porphyry copper systems in Australia generally oxidize and weather to hematitic cappings. Presumably, the semiarid monsoon environment and the long time that the sulfide systems have been exposed to oxidation on that continent lead to development of relatively stable hematite. It is now recognized that jarosite and goethite persist metastably in the limonite assemblage in all areas once sulfide oxidation is complete and acid generation ceases (Brown, 1971). The assemblage eventually converts to hematite. But, climatic conditions in arid southwest US allows metastable limonites to persist for a long time, thus providing information on former sulfide assemblages. Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. In this paper, the research effort in simulating the operation of underground coarse-coal hydrotransport systems (UCCHS) is summarized. The equipment of the system to be simulated is already optimally selected by using an analytical optimization model. The purpose of the simulation model is to test the performance of the system and to obtain the distribution of the operating parameters such as water and power consumption, amount of slurry delivered to the preparation plant, etc. Knowledge of the distribution of these parameters is essential for the efficiency of the design and the operation of the system.

Surface mining of coal is undoubtedly one of the more controversial aspects of the mineral industries today. There is a constant tug between the need for readily available and inexpensive energy supplies and the desire to minimize disturbance to the land. Without a doubt, surface mining severely disturbs the land surface. The duration of this disturbance, from a minimum of a few months to a maximum of infinity, however, is strictly dependent upon the mine operator's willingness to reclaim. Surface mining critics claim that it is impossible to ameliorate the detrimental effects of this mining to insignificance. The more vocal critics, indeed, are calling for complete abolition of surface mining for coal. Thus, they do not believe that it is possible to restore surface- mined land to pre-mining conditions. As a consequence of this position, an adversary relationship has developed between the operators and their critics who, simultaneously, believe they are doing their best for the United States. In a forum of mining experts, there is little need to recount the kind and amount of devastation that can result from poorly reclaimed land. This has been done numerous times, including once 1 by the author. Of particular interest to this paper, though, are the environmental hazards associated with contour strip mining. In addition to the problems of area mining: denudation of vegetation; exposure of toxic spoil; increase of erosion runoff; etc.--contour mining has the very real problem of landslide due to the outslope stacking of overburden. Contour mining is understood to be the extraction of coal from a hillside outcrop such that the resultant pit follows, or nearly follows, an elevation contour. The problem with contour mining as usually practiced is that the spoil from the cut, or the first cut if multiple cuts are made, is placed on the outslope. If this slope is steep, the resulting pile is difficult to stabilize, generally erodes swiftly, and may fail disastrously.

As the 2010 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2010 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 328. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, we accomplish the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly fulfills that pledge. The 2010 Transactions is the first Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely as an e-book. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will certainly better serve the mining community. I am excited about this development and the opportunities it presents. The 2010 Transactions also contain some of the most exciting research from the past year, including new developments in mineral processing, safety and exploration. Be sure not to miss the two Minerals & Metallurgical Processing issues on the subject of gold hydrometallurgy. This 2010 Transactions comprise of a total of 78 technical papers (582 pages including index), including all 21 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2010 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 62) and all 34 papers (231 pages) that were published in 2010 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 27). Addition, this volume contains 23 papers (194 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 78 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2010 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

Zeolites were first recognized as a new group of minerals by Cronstedt with the discovery of stilbite in 1756. The word zeolite was coined from the two Greek words meaning "to boil" and "a stone" because of the loss of water when heated in the mineralogist's blow pipe. (1) In 1845 it was discovered that certain soils have the power of retaining ammonium Salts. (2) These were the first ion exchange experiments. Later it was discovered that it was the hydrated silicates in the soil that produced this phenomenon and several years later a paper was published dealing with the action of dilute salt solutions on silicates which showed that this base exchange principal, which we now call cation exchange, is reversible. The quantitative cation exchange behavior of zeolite minerals, such as chabazite, was studied. As a result any aluminosilicate which exhibited the property of ion exchange was referred to as a "zeolite;" even today the term has been applied to clay minerals as well as synthetic organic ion exchange resins.

The San Manuel Oxide Pit is located within the subsidence boundaries of Magma Copper Company's block caving operation. Ground conditions offer a constant blasting challenge and vary from hard, competent crystalline rock to widely spaced fracturing in a sedimentary conglomerate. A successful drilling and blasting program has undergone several changes since mining commenced in 1985 and continues to be developed. This paper discusses the site specific progress made with the drilling and blasting program from selection of feasibility parameters to current practice. Topics discussed include controlled blasting, use Of high energy blasting agents, charge decking, blast casting, as well as standard drill and blast techniques.

Where weak rock zones are encountered in the slopes of an open pit, they may control pit wall stability. Back analysis of slopes involving failure through weak rock enables an estimate to be made of the weak rock strength. A system of consistent rock mass classification is described which enables the weak rock mass material to be described and classified from drill hole core. Correlation with back analysis determined strength allows strength estimates to be assigned to each rock mass classification.

This presentation we hope will provide you with an orderly approach co mine and surface plant closure taken from our experience over the past several years on six different projects within the intermountain states. There is no magic to the approach. It is basic common sense and yet it is interesting how many of the specific details are overlooked due to the individual complexity of each site. Our attempt here is to share some of the issues that have confronted us on these six sites. Please recognize that it is impossible to be all inclusive. Of the six sites we have drawn from; two are mine, mill and smelter sites dating back to pre-1900, one is an industrial site dating back to the early 1900s, two are mill and concentrator sites dating from the late 1940s and one is a mining district site dating from the late 1800s.

The adsorption of silver on activated carbon from cyanide solutions was studied as a function of concentration, ionic strength and pH. In cyanide solutions, silver exists mainly as the linear Ag(CN)2 complex and adsorbs on activated carbon following the Freundlich isotherm. The uptake and rate of adsorption increase with the addition of KC1 and KNO3 but changes only slightly with pH. In contrast, the adsorption of Cu(I), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) shows marked changes with pH, closely following the predominance profiles of their neutral and singly-charged cyano complexes. Clearly, multicharged negative complexes are repelled by the negatively-charged carbon surface. This sensitivity of activated carbon to the charge of the adsorbing species indicates that silver adsorbs as an anion, not chemically bound to the co-adsorbing counterions. For the same reason, activated carbon is selective to metals that form neutral and Singly-charged cyano complexes, namely gold and silver.

Mining engineers in charge of open pit mine planning very often face decision making situations dealing with the selection of the most economical method for the removal of overburden. Ripping versus conventional drilling and blasting are the options considered. The choice of a particular overburden removal method depends upon the physic-mechanical properties of the overburden material as well as the various cost factors involved in the process. The analysis of techno-economical factors involved in different methods of overburden removal needs detailed study and investigation by a technical expert. But the expert system "Fragmentation System Design" has been created in a way such that it will help and expedite the decision making process relating to overburden removal in surface mines. Furthermore, this expert system can be used for detailed design aspects of overburden removal in open pit mines.

The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.
