The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

La metodologia tipica conlleva la selección de modelos, el ajuste o reajuste de los datos primarios, la selección de una estrategia de acoplamiento, la valoración de la precisión del modelo en un sentido estadistico, y el desarrollo de estructura de simulación ejecutiva. La simulación sirve de ayuda para los ingenieros de procesos para evaluar la viabilidad de un esquema de flujo propuesto y el efecto de la modificación de un flujograma ya existente. Por otro lado, la simulación juega un papel importante en la optimación "off-line" y en la evaluación de estrategias de control de circuitos alternativos. Son presentados varios ejemplos para ilustrar estas utilizaciones para la simulación, incluyendo aplicaciones en los circuitos de trituración, circuitos de molienda y circuitos de flotación. Es de opinión de los autores que, dentro de la próxima década, las plantas de proceso de minerales serán estudiadas rutinariamente a través de una simulación digital durante las etapas preliminares de diseño. Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man&apos;s earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth&apos;s origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which difEerentia1 movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. Low-lying coastal swamps with favorable climates are ideal locations for coal accumulation and burial by river-borne sediments, and large areas are affected by relatively minor vertical movements of the shoreline. The large plates have continually or intermittently moved throughout the geologic past, resulting in various configurations of the continents and oceans, and coal-forming conditions have occurred at numerous times and places. Vast areas of our continents have been repeatedly inundated by shallow oceans and only relatively small parts of the present continents appear to have been above sea level throughout geologic time. Great forces acting principally along plate margins have folded and broken the crustal rocks, forming large belts of mountains.

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by CONSOL Energy, Marcellus Shale Coalition, and Pennsylvania Coal Association to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on the mechanical integrity of shale gas wells drilled over a longwall abutment pillar. The primary objective is to demonstrate that a properly constructed gas well in a standard longwall abutment pillar can maintain mechanical integrity during and after mining operations. A study site was selected over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under about 600 feet of cover. Four test wells and four monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the test wells and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-ft-wide longwall panels on the south and north sides of the abutment pillar were mined by. To evaluate the resulting coal protection casing profile and lateral displacement, three separate 60-arm caliper surveys were conducted. Prior to the longwall panels being mined by, a number of 3D finite element simulations were conducted to estimate subsidence at the surface, coal pillar pressure increases, the resulting coal protection casing profile and displacement, and the vertical and horizontal displacements in the four monitoring wells. Comparisons of the pre-mining 3D finite element simulation results and the surface/subsurface/underground instrumentation results show that the measured test well and IPI casing deformations and profiles are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the 3D finite element models, and that the measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models, which serves to validate the 3D finite element models. Parametric studies employing the validated 3D finite element models demonstrate that larger coal protection casing thickness is expected to have little effect on the lateral deformation, although it may reduce the magnitude of casing plastic deformation, and under deeper cover (~1,100 feet), lateral casing deformation is expected to be smaller, although larger plastic casing deformation may be present near the seam level. Also, evaluation of various casing and cementing designs using the validated 3D models clearly indicates that, when all casings are grouted to the surface except the intermediate and production casings, the intermediate and production casings show little deformation and no plastic strain. This research represents a very important step and initiative to utilize the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the oil and gas industries"

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel is a 13 km (8 mile) long segment of the Inland Feeder Project. This 3.65 m (12 ft) finished diameter water tunnel presented many challenges that had to be overcome to take the project from concept to reality, not the least of which were the diverse ground conditions. Construction of the tunnel was carried out by a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) in one tunnel drive. The project is considered a success due to the accurate baseline established for the ground conditions; the approaches used to mitigate adverse conditions; and the appropriate use of TBM excavation methods, which achieved rapid advance rates despite the challenging ground conditions.

The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.

This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an intelligent system for roof&apos; control that uses both an expert system and neural networks to improve the capability of mining engineers to evaluate roof support effectiveness for ground control in coal mines. The expert system com- pares roof support capacities with the support requirements estimated to be necessary to maintain entry stability. It does this by evaluating the results of tests on various types of roof support and establishing the maximum allowable load according to anchorage capacity and yield strength of the support. After the user enters geological information (rock properties, geometry of the opening, in situ stresses, bolt pattern parameters, etc. ), the expert system compares the predicted required loading to the roof support capacity and gives the operator advice on the adequacy of the design and how improvements could be made. A good source of the real-time data necessary to allow the expert system to make decisions will come from a roof bolting machine being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Researchers have collected data from a Western coal mine on drill bit position, penetration rate thrust, torque, and rotation rate. Using this information, two neural net- works were developed to identify different types of strata and features in a mine roof such as rock type, rock compressive strength and joint characteristics. The result is a system that can assist a mining engineer with design information that can be constantly updated as mining progresses.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber, etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by the adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. To develop a scientific basis for the selection of the appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanisms. specifically, the adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for nonionic polymers. However, a literature survey of the Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-oxide system suggested that PEO, a nonionic polymer, was substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work, characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanisms of PEO adsorption are discussed.

The technology for using limestone or lime to scrub SO2 from power-plant flue gas has significant implications to the limestone industry. A brief status report on these processes will be made, possible process requirements on the limestone properties will be reviewed, and projections on the buildup of demand with respect to time will be reviewed. Disposal problems inherent with the use of these throwaway processes will also be summarized. Given a viable technology, relations among (1) distance of power plants from low- and high-sulfur coal and limestone deposits, (2) modes of handling and transporting immense tonnages of bulk material-coal and/or limestone, and (3) regional air-quality standards are some of the factors which will ultimately determine the demand for limestone. A discussion of these factors will be presented, with the intent of identifying geographic regions where significant increases in production can reasonably be expected.

The Romanian mining and especially the salt mining industry is going through a restructuring phase; among others it has to respect the European Environment Act. One of the most important deficits of the salt mining industry is the implementation of monitoring systems for geomechanics phenomena, in order to develop an important information database and form a real base for salt mines stability, prediction and prevention measures. Monitoring system solutions, involving discontinuous and continuous measurements of displacement / deformation fields, around underground excavations, are presented and discussed. In addition, a case study for the stability prediction of an experimental salt off-set, located in the Praid salt mine, using DKRControl method, is presented. The two monitoring systems use different tools, namely measuring tapes (to determine distance between markers in T-D station) and ultrasonic transducers (SM-TDA equipment).

INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. This member of the Morrison Formation contains many large deposits of uranium. This is (some pages in this article are damaged)

Two basic types of subsidence occur in Illinois: pit and sag / trough. Pits develop over mines less than 165 feet deep and where relatively incompetent strata are found over the mines. Sag subsidence is found over mines as shallow as 75 feet and more generally over mines of greater depths. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw associated with sag subsidence appear to be controlled by the rock properties at each specific site. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw are smaller where the sites are not affected by geologic structures. An investigation to determine if a time factor based on the time interval from the date of mining to the subsidence events has shown that simple correlations with time, percent extraction, average pillar stresses, and pillar dimensions is not evident in Illinois.

The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet&apos;s producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product&apos;s quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet&apos;s porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola&apos;s book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930&apos;s and 1940&apos;s: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940&apos;s. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. Extensive soil conditioning was required to allow Earth Pressure Balance(EPB) tunneling on the South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel project in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. This tunnel extends 19,000 feet out under the Pacific Ocean and was mined through soil formations including silts, sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. EPB pressures ranged from 3.0 to 7.0 bar, with the maximum pressures required when mining through the highly permeable granular formations.

The function of the mine surveyor is to (a) provide a network of points of accurately known position, covering the entire mine property, (b) obtain the required data for the preparation of useful maps and sections! (c) provide position and directional control for the guidance of the operations, (d) measure the progress of the work, (e) measure the movement of rock masses, and (f) make miscellaneous surveys as needed. Mining properties range from the very small to the extremely large, and from those which involve only surface operations to those involving extensive underground workings. Active mines undergo constant change, necessitating continual updating of the surveys. The differences in the character of the deposits, the scale of mining and the mining methods result in large differences in the surveyor&apos;s activities and techniques, but many of the problems involved are common to most mines. The surface work of the mine surveyor is very similar to that, of the plane surveyor in that control points are established by triangulation, trilateration and traversing. Detail is taken by direct measurement, by stadia and by aerial photography. The equipment used, the techniques and the methods of processing the resulting data are likewise very similar. However, the underground work is quite different : A. The lines of sight frequently must be carried through constricted openings, often involving short lines of sight and awkward setups. B. The lighting often is poor, requiring illumination of the backsights and foresights, and the crosshairs. C. The ambient conditions often are difficult, involving falling water, high tem- peratures, poor visibi &apos;kv and heavy traffic through the area being suneyed. D. The surrounding rock map be unstable, resulting in movement or loss of the surveying stations, as well as hazard to the surveyors. E. The points to be measured often are difficult or impossible to reach. F. Steep vertical sights often are necessary, requiring the use of special equipment. G. Many working levels commonly are involved, requiring the transfer of position and orientation to each with a high level of precision. This section therefore will concentrate on surveying problems peculiar to the mine surveyor, chiefly underground work. 22.1-THE MINE COORDINATE SYSTEM A system of coordinates is essential for all permanent mining operations It is very desirable that all mining operations in a ,given area b~ tied into the same system, as this minimizes problems of boundaries and connections Whenever possible this system should be tied into and made part of the state or regional grid system. It is desirable to orient the coordinate grid on a true-north line and to position the origin of the coordinates so that all of the work will be in the "northeast" quadrant, making the north and east coordinates always positive. This can be done by subtracting suitable constant values from the north and east coordinates of the regional system The residual values are of more convenient magnitude and can be used as the local mine coordinates. In mineral processing, the last century of the current millenium has been the century of froth flotation. The process did not result from fundamental research, but was developed over the years by empirical methods. In more recent years, our understanding of the fundamental principles of the flotation process have made significant strides. This paper reviews some of the historical perspectives of developments in flotation reagents, the development and application of experimental tools for delineating flotability and interfactial phenomena, advances in flotation fundamentals, and the development of flotation kinetics, both macroscopic and microscopic subprocesses. Through the application of surface chemistry, the flotation process has permitted economic utilization of a vast array of complex ores.

Given: the process tonnage, performance objectives, and plant floor area, the paper will outline the metallurgical and machine hydrodynamic scale-up procedures for translating the lab flotation test results to the design of a full size flotation machine installation, including the machine number, size, and arrangement. Machine selection considerations for rougher, scavenger and cleaner duty, and special considerations relative to specific applications, will be summarized where appropriate. The value of kinetic modeling in quantitative metallurgical (lab to full size machine) scale-up will be reviewed considering a coal installation, and design information for additional applications such as copper, molybdenum, iron, phosphate, and potash will be discussed.
