This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

Point load strength (Is50) and slake durability (ID2) indices provide a measure of the strength and durability of rock fragments and are related to the alteration intensity and frictional resistance of the materials. Samples were collected from the rock piles, alteration scars and debris flows at the Questa mine with the purpose of examining relationships between Is50 and ID2, mineralogy, chemistry, weathering, hydrothermal alteration, and other geotechnical parameters. The Is50 from the various rock piles ranges from 0.6-8.2 MPa and the ID2 ranges from 80.9-99.5%. The Is50 and ID2 results indicate that the samples from the debris flows are stronger (average Is50= 4.0 MPa and ID2= 98.4%) than the rock-pile samples and that the alteration scar samples are weaker (average Is50 = 2.8 MPa and ID2 = 89.2%) than the rock-pile samples, but still most of these rocks are strong in terms of their Is50 and ID2. The Is50 decreases as the degree of alteration increases in some rock pile and alteration scar samples, but not in all. However, the majority of the rock fragments within the rock piles still indicate high strength, even after 25-40 years of weathering.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.

A series of performance studies were conducted using countercurrent column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia using a 150-mm (6-in.) inside diameter column that was 5.8 m (19 ft) high. Both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 150 µm (100 mesh) X 0 were tested. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5% to 15% while the ash content ranged from about 30% to 60%. The concentrates produced contained 2% to 10% ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12 to 1.25 kg/t (0.25 to 2.5 lbs per st) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/t (0.25 lbs per st) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from seven different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships used to design a full-scale installation presently in operation.

In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

Demand for engineers will increase even more because many of the professionals in industry are about to retire within the next 5 years. Meanwhile mining is a growth industry, minerals demand continues to increase in line with the growth in World GDP, as illustrated in the Graph at the end of the paper."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bruce mine of Cyprus Mines Corp. is located in Bagdad, AZ. The mining method used is open cut-and-fill. Of the annual production of 81 647 t (90,000 st), approximately 83% is taken from load-haul-dump (LHD) stopes and the balance from slusher stopes. All ore is produced from the area between the 1250 level and the 2300 level. The average travel time from the shaft pocket to the stope is approximately 5 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The Bruce ore body occurs in quartz-sericite schist with Dick rhyolite on the footwall and andesite on the hanging wall. Diabase dikes are found in the hanging wall; there is also a dike coming off the footwall and crosscutting the ore body. All of the rock types are of the Precambrian Yavapai series and have been subjected to regional metamorphism. A composite of the ore body is given in Fig. 1. The deposit is of massive sulfides occurring as a steeply dipping replacement body. On the upper levels the ore is veinlike with widths from 0.6 to 4.6 m (2 to 15 ft), dipping at 1.4 to 1.5 rad (80° to 85°). On the lower levels the ore is dipping from I to 1.2 rad (60° to 70°) with widths from 3 to 16.8 m (10 to 55 ft). The strike length varies between 107 to 183 m (350 to 600 ft). The rhyolite footwall generally has a knife-edge contact with the massive sulfides. The exceptions to this are the upper levels where there is a 1.5 to 3 m (5 to 10 ft) band of silicified sericite schist between the sulfides and the rhyolite. In the southern part of the ore body the hanging wall is tuffaceous andesite and andesite. In this area the contact is generally sharp and easy to follow. However, to the north there is a large chlorite schist zone that crosscuts the bedding and comes in contact with the massive sulfides. This is apparently due to hydrothermal alteration of the andesite. The chlorite schist is highly mineralized with chalcopyrite and pyrite and quite often forms economic pockets of ore. In the massive sulfides the chief ore minerals are sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Pyrite is the predominant sulfide with considerable pyrrhotite throughout. Bright arsenopyrite ouhedrons in fine grain massive sulfides are quite common. Occasionally small amounts of galena are seen, usually near the foot or hanging wall contacts. On rare occasions tennanite is associated with massive arsenopyrite. Minor amounts of quartz, calcite, and un¬replaced remnants of sericite schist occur, but essentially pyrite is the gangue in which the ore minerals occur. The ore values are in excess of 3.5% copper and 12.5% zinc with some silver and rare gold as byproducts. Ground Conditions The massive sulfides are generally self-supporting. One exception is in the 1850 stope where the ore body is 9 to 11 m (30 to 55 ft) wide and 152 m (500 ft) long. There are flat to shallow dipping slips and seams in the ore, creating extremely blocky ground. For support, old 25.4-mm (1-in.) hoist ropes were installed tensioned to 27 t (30 st), and then cement grouted over the entire length in longholes [14 to 15 in (40 to 50 ft) in length) drilled on 3-m (10-ft) centers from the level above. This has tied the formation together very successfully and virtually eliminated the blocky ground condition. Both the hanging wall and footwall are quite shaley in some areas. Reasons for Adopting Trackless Open Cut-and-Fill Methods First, any method other than open cut-and-fill would have caused too much dilution. The use of rubber-tired mining equipment in the pro¬duction stopes requires a footwall ramp. The inclines in ore will be mined out, so this ramp in the footwall will provide access to and from the stopes (Fig. 2). This incline is very expensive, but necessary to convert existing stopes to LHD mining. 'The final cost of ore mined by the LHD machines has not been determined. As of 1972, tons per manshift in the 2150 stope-the only one to complete a full cut-had increased from 7.58 t (8.36 st) to 12.83 t (14.14

During the last ten years, Paques Inc. has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems to remove sulfur compounds from water and gaseous streams using biotechnological processes. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters in two biological steps. In the first step, sulfate-reducing bacteria converts sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The HS reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. In the second step, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. The Budelco Zinc Refinery in The Netherlands installed a groundwater treatment system to remove metals and sulfate using the biological steps described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 and has been treating 5,000 m3/d (180 thousand cu ft/day). A pilot plant began operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and for the selective copper recovery from leach water. The oxidation of sulfide minerals at an ore transfer location in Western Canada has resulted in widespread contamination of underlying soil and groundwater. The oxidation of sulfide minerals has released sulfate [SO,] and heavy metals including cadmium [Cd], copper [Cu], nickel [Ni], lead [Pb], and zinc [Zn] into the groundwater. A compost-based sulfate-reducing reactive wall was installed in the path of the plume in an attempt to reduce the potential impact of the heavy metals on a down-gradient marine inlet. Monitoring of the reactive wall over a 21-month period has shown that Cu concentrations decrease from over 4000 ug/L to less than 5 ug/L. Cadmium, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations also show similar decreases with treated concentrations generally being observed near or below detection limits.

Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

"The Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Crystal Plant produces Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a series of cooling crystallizers. In this process, high supersaturation and unwanted spontaneous nucleation promote fine crystals. Seeding through recycled crystal classification can manipulate the crystal size distribution (CSD) for larger crystals. Proper selection of the crystallizer for seeding can prevent spontaneous nucleation and promote final crystal size. This study shows when seeding temperature is closer to the crystallizer temperature, suspension densities in the crystallizers are promoted and overall CSD shifts to a larger size of crystals. INTRODUCTION Figure 1 shows an overview of the crystallization process. The in-plant feed flow, called Pregnant Mother Liquor (PML), enters the first crystallizer and is subsequently cooled through a series of four crystallizers. Specific temperatures are targeted for each crystallizer to ensure the crystallization process is operating within the metastable zone (MSZ). The discharged flow from crystallizer #5 then enters two cyclones. The overflow from the cyclones contains smaller crystals providing seed crystals for crystallizer #5. The underflow from the cyclones begins the drying process. The overflow from crystallizer #5 enters cyclone #3 for removal of fine crystals and seeding purposes. The underflow from cyclone #3 has the capability to provide seed crystals for crystallizer #1 or crystallizer #2. The overflow leaves the system as Spent Mother Liquor (SML). Undersize crystals dissolve into the PML and return back to crystallizer #1.THEORIES AND METALLURGICAL TESTS Seeding requires an understanding of the crystal size, solution temperature and amount of crystals that enter the crystallizers (1). For the seed crystal size, classified crystal seeds can prevent fine crystals returning back into the system which eventually leads to excessive agglomeration (2). Proper selection of the crystallizer can ensure seeding at an appropriate temperature. Seeding at a temperature much lower or higher than the saturation temperature promotes spontaneous nucleation. Typically, seeding between 4-5°F below the saturation temperature is acceptable (5). A general rule of thumb is to add the seed crystals at the temperature between the solubility curve and the metastable zone. An experiment conducted by Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. indicates seeding close to the solubility curve rather than the metastable zone promotes a lower supersaturation and nucleation rate but yields a higher growth rate and a greater number of larger crystals (1). The amount of seed crystals can not only change the suspension density but also narrows the width of the MSZ in the crystallizers. An experiment conducted by Jaroslav Nyvlt reports with the crystals absent, the maximum allowable undercooling is 6.3 degrees at a cooling rate, 5°C/hour. With the presence of crystals, it narrows the MSZ width to 2.2 degrees (4). Industrial crystallizers normally operate at suspension densities between 15% and 25% by mass. When suspension densities are lower than 15%, it increases the risk of primary nucleation and the probability of incrustations; on the other hand, if the suspension densities are greater than 25%, it can cause a greater attrition rate and increase the probability of deposits (6). Moreover, operating suspension densities between 15% and 25% are also sufficient to minimize supersaturation rate which promotes crystal growth over nucleation (2, 6)."

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.

Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam
