The usual method employed to determine the direction of flow in a connecting airway in advance is to conduct a survey between the two existing nodes being connected by means of the new airway. It is then assumed that airflow will take place from the node with higher pressure to the node with lower pressure. The purpose of this paper is to examine this direction-of-flow problem -- using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network -- and specify some conditions that ensure that flow will take from the higher-pressure node to the lower-pressure node. It is concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important properties of the direction-of-flow problem.

Introduction The weight of a Mining Truck can be affected by field modifications, the selection of items like tires, rims or even the conditions in which it operates. Truck performance and the compliance with a number of ISO standards, e.g. braking, steering and ROPS are dependent on truck weight. It is critical that truck owners understand the impact of changes in weight1. What makes this even more difficult for owners to evaluate is that there is no standard terminology or definitions for Mining Truck weights. This paper discusses and defines weight terminology, how it applies to performance and standards and the impact on the application of Mining Trucks.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). Several startup or longtime underground stone mines have experienced unanticipated roof control difficulties due to the variable geologic character of the roof strata. Careful mapping of roof conditions, and identification of controlling geologic and mine geometric factors, lead to an understanding of the mechanisms causing roof problems. Factors such as unexpected rolls of the roof strata resulting in a gradual change from strong to weak roof; encountering open water-filled master joints; roof strata delamination due to internal water pressures; local karst features with mud, sand, and water hazards; and sudden loss of limestone roof due to paleo-channel erosion are some recent problems described. Strategies for overcoming these problems are discussed and detailed.

Chemical grouting has been successfully used for over forty years to control the movement of groundwater in a wide variety of applications including tunnels, subway systems, sanitary sewers, mines and construction projects. This paper illustrates the versatility of chemical grouts by reviewing three projects where chemical grout was utilized to address some very difficult water control challenges. The featured product is acrylamide which can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of grout such as cementitious products. Acrylamide grout is injected as a two component product that will react and form an impermeable gel when the components combine. There are notable differences between the acrylamide based products and cementitious products. The most notable and significant difference is that acrylamide is a true solution grout that contains no particulates and has a viscosity of 1-2cps. This feature enables the acrylamide grout to penetrate very small geological features that other grouts could not penetrate and to seal small cracks and fissures where groundwater seepage is occurring. The product also has an adjustable gel set time from a few seconds to several hours which enables the operator to determine the product travel before it forms a gel. When properly applied the product has a half-life in the soil of 362 years (per testing by the US Department of Energy).

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

Over the past decade the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry?s injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked, injury rate, and days lost. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992?2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. The Minera Yanacocha operation consists of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants and presents various operating challenges. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters and inventory issues. An integral component of the process water/mass balance is a model of each heap that describes heap behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. The heap models are linked to a mass balancing program in order to track flows and concentrations throughout the circuit. A case study of the process heap model is presented for the La Quinua heap, including results for the normal base line operation and several operational problems such as loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased flow to a section of the heap (i.e., pond volume control), effect of significant rain events, and impact of a change in material properties (i.e., change in ore type). The impact on heap operating efficiency is discussed with regard to effects on recovery and gold solution grades.

Anatolia Minerals Development Limited (AMDL) is constructing the Çöpler Gold Project in eastern Turkey and commenced mining in the fourth quarter of 2009 with gold production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The project is a 15,500 tonnes/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life approximately 40 million tones of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 tonnes of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the mine life. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

Laboratory experiments were performed on a Brazilian diatomite from Bahia State to produce an industrial product for use as a filter aid. Bench and pilot plant tests were conducted consisting of: diatomite desegregation, organic matter and clay removal, filtration, drying and calcination. Calcination temperature and sodium carbonate addition influenced diatomite particle size distribution. Optimum filtration rates for calcined products were obtained at 900°C and 47 min. residence time with 3% (w/w) of sodium carbonate addition, and resultant products met specifications imposed on filter aids.

This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

The spent catalyst is one of solid waste resources, which contains precious metals with considerable recovery value. However, due to the different compositions of catalyst, the recovery process is difficult. Most of the catalysts are supported by alumina which has good alkali-soluble properties, while platinum is insoluble in alkali. Platinum is enriched by pressurized alkaline solution which is a kind of hydrometallurgical process. The novelty of this study is the separation of alumina and platinum from the spent catalyst and the enrichment of platinum in the solid phase. In this study, a leaching process using NaOH as leaching agent under high temperature and pressure was employed. The effects of alkali concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time, and liquid–solid ratio on leaching efficiency were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined as follows: alkali concentration of 240 g/L, temperature of 200℃, pressure of 1.20 MPa, time of 1 h, liquid–solid ratio of 5:1. It was concluded that the leaching rate of alumina can reach 99.69%. The content of platinum increased from 0.1749 to 21.12%, the loss of platinum was 3.39%, and the enrichment ratio of platinum increased by 120.82 times. The leaching kinetics of alumina was studied based on the shrinkage core model. The activation energy of alumina leaching is 19.53 kJ/mol, and the leaching process is controlled by chemical reaction. Pressurized alkali solution can not only efficiently leachate alumina from the spent catalyst and enrich platinum, but also reduce the reaction time and increase reaction rate.

Small-mine and contractor Fatal Incidence Rates have been a problem for over 20 years in the coal industry, and the rates persist as unacceptably high. This paper briefly retraces historical information and data on the continuing problem and recounts the many unsuccessful efforts and initiatives to address the problems effectively. Next the results of a review of international literature on addressing the problems are presented. After focusing on a method to pinpoint the trouble spots more specifically through a nested data analysis, suggestions are provided on how the problem may potentially be addressed more systematically and effectively in the U.S.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation, which often requires that the primary ventilation system is upgraded with additional shafts and surface fans. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room and pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.
