In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

The paper proposes two numerical models ot the mechanical behaviour of chalk. First, an elasto-plastic constitutive law reproduces the different plastic mechanisms of the chalk and the influence of pore fluids by introducing the concept of suction. Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. Der Artikel stellt zwei numerische Modelle des mechanischen Verhaltens der Kreide vor. Das erste ist ein elasto-plastisches Modell, das verschiedene plastische Mechanismen der Kreide und den Einfluss von Porenflüssigkeit, unter dem Begriff der Suktion, reproduziert. Das zweite Modell berücksichtigt darüberhinaus das zeitabhängige Verhalten. Schliesslich zeigt die Veröffentlichung eine Simulation einer theoretischen Lagerstätte während der Entleerung und der Wasserinjektion. L'article propose deux modèles numériques du comportement mécanique de la craie. Le premier est une loi élasto-plastique qui reproduit les différents mécanismes plastiques de la craie et l'influence du fluide interstitiel par l'introduction de la notion de succion. Le second est un modèle prenant en compte les effets différés. Enfin, l'article présente une simulation d'un réservoir académique durant les phases de déplétion et d'injection d'eau.

The role of the electric arc in the consumption of electrodes in submerged arc furnaces has long been debated. The hostile environment in the furnace does not make direct measurement feasible, so simulation has been used to evaluate the arcs contribution to the erosion. Magnetofluiddynamic (MFD) electric arc simulations and a cathode / anode sub-model developed in order to provide boundary condition to the arc model have been used for this purpose. The cathode / anode sub-model provides current distributions and cathode / anode fall voltages for the arc and temperature distribution for the electrode surface, which is paramount to the erosion rate which in turn is calculated from the Clausius Clapeyron equation and the Hertz Knudsen formula for the vapour transport. In the case of high-current industrial AC arcs, arc currents are typically ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 ? 60 MW. The results show that although enormous amounts of material is evaporated, much of it recondenses on the surface. Furthermore the results show that the arc erosion increases strongly with the arc current. If a single arc is present its contribution to erosion is close to the actual total erosion in the furnace. Results from this analysis indicate that there are possibly more than one arc present in the crater, in which case less than 40% of the total erosion would be due to the arc, the rest is chemical erosion.

A well known rock mass classification system has been altered slightly to address the issues found under remnant mining conditions. By detail study of the expected fracture patterns and local geology, the rock mass is classified to indicate the condition of the hanging wall prior to mining. The risk level of each mining step is evaluated by calculating input parameters for computer simulations from the actual rock mass condition. Seismic activity is catered for by the understanding that large event rates and large magnitude events reduce the quality of the local rock mass and that the rock mass stiffness should be adapted accordingly. A case study is presented to test parts of the protocol. Un système connu de classification des masses rocheuses a été légèrement modifié pour faire face aux questions posées par les conditions d’extraction de débris. Une étude détaillée des diagrammes de fragmentation et de la géologie locale permet de classer la masse rocheuse pour indiquer la condition du toit avant l’extraction. Le niveau de risque de chaque étape minière est évalué en calculant les paramètres d’entrée pour simulation par ordinateur à partir de la condition réelle de la masse rocheuse. L’activité sismique est prise en compte avec la réalisation que les taux de larges évènements et les évènements de large magnitude réduisent la qualité de la masse rocheuse locale et que la raideur de la masse rocheuse doit donc être adaptée. Une étude de cas est présentée pour tester des sections du protocole. Ein sehr bekanntes Gesteinsmassenklassifikationssystem wurde abgeändert um die Probleme zu behandeln die unter Restabbaukonditionen angetroffen werden. Durch detaillierstes Studium der der zu erwartenden Bruchmuster und der lokalen geologischen Verhältnisse wird die Gesteinsmasse in Hinblick auf die Konditionen der Flözoberseite klassifiziert. Das Risikoniveau für jeden Abbauschritt wird durch die Eingabeparameter aktuellen Gesteinsmassenkondition für die Computersimulation evaluiert. Für die Seismische Aktivitäten wird Sorge getragen durch das Verständnis, daß große Ereignisraten und Ereignisse hoher Größenklassen die Qualität der lokalen Gesteinsmasse reduzieren und daß die Gesteinsmassensteifheit entsprechend adaptiert werden sollte. Eine Fallstudie um Teile des Protokolls zu testen wird präsentiert.

The Orange-Vaal River system is known to be the primary secondary source for alluvial diamond deposits in the northern Cape and along the west coast of Namaqualand. The higher order sources for diamonds contained within this system are still not defined entirely to satisfaction, but certainly include kimberlite pipes exposed in the catchment regions of these rivers. The focus of alluvial diamond mining along the Orange-Vaal system recently changed from the traditional areas in the upper catchment regions?the Barkly West, Christiana, Bloemhof, Wolmaranstad, Schweizer-Reineke region, and the lower regions near the mouth of the Orange River at Baken, Alexander Bay and Oranjemund, to the area between Douglas and Prieska?the so-called mid-Orange region (Figure 1).

Anglo Coal South Africa mines coal for both the domestic and export market using open cast and strip mining methods. To establish a mine, a process is set in place to gather ever increasing amounts of geological and metallurgical data to confirm a proven reserve. Increasingly, geotechnical data are also included in this process to confirm that reserve is easily and safely mineable. The mine design process is an iterative one using a combination of numerical modelling and empirical data to arrive at a mining layout that is both, practical, productive and safe. In South Africa it is a legal requirement to compile a code of practice to combat rock fall and slope instability accidents and these have to be revised annually, reinforcing the iterative process of continual improvement. To ensure best practise occurs, all Anglo Coal operations are subjected to annual 2nd party audits and ad hoc 3rd party audit by independent consultants. This paper attempts to explain the process described above in a concise, but understandable manner. 1.0 GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Ecca sediments date from the Permian period and the coal deposits were formed in glaciated valleys on a basement of Dolomite, Ryolite or Granophyre rock types. The sediments overlying the coal deposits are typically flat lying and multiple bedded. The sediments consist of mudstones, shales and sandstones and are generally capable of forming stable highwalls given the time that they must stand up for. Anglo Coal extracts coal from the Witbank, Highveld and Vereeniging coalfields. The Witbank coalfields contain five seams numbered from the base upwards, 1 to 5 Seam; Highveld coalfield the 2 and 4 Seam and the Vereening area the seams are described as Top, Middle and Bottom seams. Coal deposited over the basement Dolomite formation display very erratic dips, as contemporaneous subsidence occurred in some instances over sinkholes that were forming, resulting in local thickening of the coal deposit and resulting in strata that dips toward the centre of the sinkhole.

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, techniques have been developed to measure the resistivity of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and other associated minerals. The techniques have proven reproducible and have allowed the measurement of resistivity under conditions of varying temperature, surface condition and surface moisture adsorption. The measured values can be linked to the separability of the minerals in the dry plant, and hence are useful as a diagnostic test for existing plants when performance deteriorates, or for greenfield sites to investigate potential problems. One of the major problems in electrical separation of titanium minerals is surface coating on the mineral grains. Coatings can make normally conductive minerals such as ilmenite and leucoxene behave much more like non-conductors. Electrical separation of surface contaminated ilmenite from non-conductors then becomes extremely difficult unless the surface contaminant is first removed. The resistivity measurement technique was used to evaluate the effect of surface cleaning on the resistivity of ilmenite and zircon from a Western Australian deposit which will shortly be in production. Ten different attritioning methods were evaluated, ranging from simple rinsing inwater to chemical attritioning in sulphuric acid combined with ultrasonic leaching. A roasting and quenching step was also investigated. As would be expected, the gentler treatments, such as rinsing in water or Calgon, had only amoderate effect on the ilmenite surface coatings. Ilmenite resistivity decreased by about 1 order of magnitude from 5.6 x108?m to between 2.5 and 4.4 x107?m. More intense treatments had a much more pronounced effect. The most effective, reduced ilmenite resistivity to 6.5 x105?m or three orders of magnitude. Zircon was relatively unaffected by any of the attritioning methods, with only a small increase in resistivity observed from 8.0 x1012?m to 2 x1013 ?m. The results show that measurement of mineral resistivity allows the effect of surface treatments to be easily quantified in a way that has benefits for greenfield site development where only small samples are available for testing. The effect of surface moisture has also been investigated using resistivity measurements. Measurements were made on zircon in an environmental chamber in which both humidity and temperature could be closely controlled. Zircon resistivity at 60 deg C decreased from 6 x1011?m at 5% relative humidity to 8 x108?m at 95% humidity. Moisture content and moisture re-adsorption from dry of zircon and number of other minerals were measured using a Mettler moisture analyser. Zircon adsorbed the least amount of surface moisture (0.05–0.09%) but re-adsorbed moisture from dry the fastest, reaching 98% of the original level in 10 minutes. Leucoxene adsorbed the most moisture (0.67%), but was much slower re-adsorbing this moisture from the dry state, reaching only 63% of the original level in 10 minutes. The difference was attributed to the surface characteristics of the grains, the leucoxene being much more porous than the zircon examined. The resistivities and differing rates of moisture adsorption can be used to quantify the effects of changes in atmospheric conditions of the performance of electrical separation in dry plants.

Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.

Mud rushes are hazardous occurrences that have occurred frequently in mines in South Africa, and have been the cause of numerous fatalities in the past. Mud rush incidents not associated with accidents are believed to be common occurrences that are not generally reported. Many such incidents are probably associated with the operation of chutes and box fronts. This paper describes the conditions necessary for mud rush occurrences, postulated mud rush mechanisms, and methods of combating the mud rush hazard.

Bateman, like other engineering contractors, carries out or participates in many studies of potential projects in the Minerals Industry. This paper aims to explain the contracting approach to feasibility studies as practiced by Bateman, particularly where this differs from a traditional mining company approach. A brief description is provided of the usual phases of a project and the types of estimate needed to proceed from one phase to the next. Possible organizational structures involving different forms of association between owner, contractor and consultants are then outlined. The bulk of the paper then demonstrates that the cost estimates prepared stem directly from the mining plan, metallurgical process design and engineering design philosophy. The steps to be followed in order to prepare a credible estimate which accurately reflects the design constraints are described. The importance and the methodology of carrying out value engineering and of preparing contingency estimates based on a thorough risk analysis exercise are then discussed. Financial modelling techniques are described briefly. The paper concludes with short summary case studies of two recent investigations of potential projects in Africa.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

This paper discusses the traditional costing approach currently used in the underground coal mining industry. Activity Based Costing (ABC) is identified as being a potentially more effective manner in which to cost underground coal mining systems. With the use of a costing framework developed by the author incorporating new thinking to eliminate the shortcomings identified in the traditional costing approach, a comparison of two types of underground coal mining systems, viz. continuous miner and longwall, is conducted. It is found that under certain criteria, in all cases, irrespective of the way in which the systems are costed, the continuous miner system is currently the better investment. It is also observed that when a system is costed using ABC that better investment decisions result when compared to costing the same system using traditional costing techniques. It is further seen that traditional costing techniques tend to overestimate the total costs of a mining system. This paper shows one application of ABC that can be incorporated as a management tool.

The method used to assess the reactivity of lime was evaluated to gauge it usefulness as a quality control tool. The effect of particle sizes, different lime and water masses for a fixed s:l ratio and the same for various s:l ratios on the reactivity values obtained, were investigated. An attempt to introduce the amount of grit produced during the slaking reaction as an additional measure of limeís quality and reactivity, proved to be unsuccessful. It was also found that the relative amount of lime slaked during the different tests was independent of the reactivity value of the lime. The investigation confirmed the usefulness of the accepted test procedure as are liable method to measure the reactivity of lime, despite various reservations expressed from a theoretical point of view.

CaF2is often used as a fluoride addition to the chloride salt flux in the melting of aluminium scrap. The solubility of CaF2in the chloride salt system is limited. Dissolved CaF2is considered to improve the properties of salt fluxes. Experimental investigations indicated that the solubility ofCaF2in 70 wt % NaCl/30 wt % KCl, German salt flux used in aluminium scrap melting, might be lower than expected according to literature data. The pseudo binary section CaF2-(70 wt % NaCl-30 wt % KCl) was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The determined solubility of CaF2appeared to be considerably lower than presented in the literature. The pseudo binary section calculated using thermodynamic data partially confirmed the results. DTA allowed us alsoto determine the crystallization temperature interval of the two phase eutectic consisting of the solid solution NaCl-KCl and CaF2. Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area.
