As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

In light of soaring commodity prices, Nkomati has investigated the potential of processing additional low grade nickel ores to add to their reserves. The Chromititic Peridotite Mineralised Zone (PCMZ) was identified as one ore type with the potential of producing a high grade nickel concentrate. In addition to the nickel, copper, cobalt and PGM?s, the ore also contains a significant amount of chromite which adds substantial value to the project. Pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and chromite are the dominant minerals within the ore, which on average grades around 0.23% Ni and 12% Cr2O3. The PCMZ ore contains excessive amounts of fibrous silicates which makes it a challenging float, with gangue control as the key element to success. Extensive laboratory testwork, which eventually led to a pilot plant campaign, was undertaken with the aim of developing a process route for treating the PCMZ ore. Several flotation circuit configurations were tested and results from the optimal circuit indicated that a nickel concentrate grading at 8.5% is achievable at a recovery of 78%, with substantial recoveries for the copper, cobalt and PGM co-products. The chromite concentrate, grading at 45%, was extracted from the flotation rougher tailings via a spiral plant. These promising results were incorporated into the plant design and are currently being evaluated in a bankable feasibility study, which will see the current 100ktpm MMZ concentrator being upgraded to a 250ktpm PCMZ concentrator as part of Nkomati?s Phase II expansion.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

Two backfill systems have been developed on West Driefontein, namely the centrifuge dewatered tailings system and the cyclone-classified tailings system. Modifications to the two systems since the publication of the original paper (Close and Klokow, 1985) are discussed in addition to the results obtained. Considerable experience has been gained from the operation of the centrifuge dewatering units as well as the placement of dewatered tailings in a difficult mine environment. The centrifuge dewatered tailings method has proved successful in the extraction of a highly stressed block of ground at No. 5A Sub-vertical Shaft. The utilization of backfill support in this area made it possible to dispose of a high-grade barrier pillar. This pillar was considered necessary prior to the introduction of backfill support. The recovery of the gold from this pillar made the use of dewatered tailings backfill cost- effective, despite high labour and maintenance costs. Current experience with the bagfilling method of placing cyclone- classified tailings indicates that it is viable and requires considerably less capital investment. Although expensive at present, it is envisaged that costs will decrease once cheaper bags and other forms of stope support are used. The placement of backfill in small-diameter sausage-type bags requires no change in mining cycle and allows the backfill to be placed close to the stope face. Both backfill systems are being expanded but preference is to be given to the cyclone-classified tailings system.

VAN GRAAN, M.Sc (Pretoria) (Visitor) Microclimate suits have been shown to be very effective in decreasing physiological strain in hot, wet environments, thus enabling men to work without risk in areas that would normally carry a high risk of heat stroke. In this paper, some design considerations in the development of the frozen jacket are described. Water complied with most of the desirable properties required of a coolant material for use In a microclimate suit. The Human Sciences Laboratory has developed a jacket in which ice is used as the coolant and which is designed according to the most acceptable anthropometrical characteristics. The jacket consists of an inner poncho-type waistcoat containing 28 water compartments. Over this is worn an insulating jacket, which minimizes warming of the coolant by the environment. Suitable refrigeration units have been developed to freeze the jackets underground. Laboratory tests have shown that these jackets are effective for about 2,5 hours, Irrespective of the wet-bulb environment, when men are working at a moderate rate. Jackets should, however, be used only in environments in which the wet-bulb temperature is in the range of 32,S0 to 35,S °C.

An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. A failed and stable Upper Group 2 chromitite pillar database was collected in 2007 as part of the PlatMine 1.2 pillar strength project. The database consisted of 177 pillars, of which 33 had failed. Most of the data were collected from various intermediate-depth mines near the town of Thabazimbi. Spans between rows of chain pillars were about 30 m. Pillar loads were estimated using pseudo-3D, elastic, boundary element modelling software. The pillar-load data were evaluated using a maximum likelihood regression analysis to determine strength parameters, following a similar approach to historically acceptable practice. The original formula was named the PlatMine Formula. This paper describes re-evaluations of the database, using a linear formula and several variations of the power formula. The formula providing the lowest standard deviation to the data in the database was considered the best representation of the pillars in the database. Through this rigorous process, a new formula for peak pillar strength was developed for Upper Group 2 chromitite pillars, which is unaffected by volume. The small standard deviation provided by this formula suggests a reliable relationship between strength and w/h ratio, in the w/h ratio range between 1.5 and 4.7. Accuracy, precision, and recall analysis confirmed the efficacy of this equation to the data in the database. Importantly, the new formula provided in the paper does not predict a significantly different strength to the current PlatMine formula, within the confines of the database.

Globally, the demand for mineral products is ever increasing. Extraction of these mineral resources results in the continuous production of a huge volume of waste material, including tailing dumps. The mass of tailings usually exceeds the actual resource and often contains hazardous contaminants. This study investigated the effects of tailings disposal on soil, water, and air quality in the Nampundwe area. Water, soil, and dust samples were collected from different locations in the surrounding communities. The constituents analysed in the samples included copper, cobalt, iron, sulfate, and silica. According to the results obtained, some seepages occurred from the tailings impoundment to the shallow aquifer in the area. However, the general water quality meets the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) statutory limits. Recorded concentrations of sulfate (1500 mg/l), copper (1.5 mg/l), cobalt (1.0 mg/l), iron (2.0 mg/l), and silica were between 0.003 mg/l and 705 mg/l, which is far below ZEMA’s statutory limit. Silica concentration was also evident in the air. The highest concentration recorded was 260 ppcc (particle per cubic centimeter) recorded in July 2019 from the northern direction of the tailings dam. The concentration was below the statutory limit of 350 ppcc. The topsoil from the northern part of the tailings recorded a silica dust concentration of 39.9 ppcc. Iron was evident in the underground soil with a concentration of 8.01 ppcc, cobalt 0.005 ppcc, copper 0.051 ppcc, while sulfate was recorded as 0.41 ppcc.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. A nutating grinding mill, exemplified by the commercial HICOM mill, achieves efficient particle size reduction through the accelerated motion of the material charge within the nutating chamber. This design, characterised by high particle velocities and rapid charge circulation, offers a compact solution compared to tumbling mills. There have been concerns regarding the mechanical reliability of kinetic joints for certain specialised mining applications. Recognising the need to model internal forces in such systems, this study focuses on the uncoupled simulation using multibody dynamics and the discrete element method. The investigation employed a small-scale experimental test mill, referred to as the NuMILL, featuring a cylindrical chamber (140 mm internal diameter, 245 mm height, 6° nutation angle). Instrumented with an array of sensors, the NuMILL provided internal load data for validating the simulations. Experiments were conducted with an empty chamber or filled with charge material. Charge materials included coarse sand or steel pellets with a charge-to-chamber mass ratio of 0.25. The mill speed ranged between 100 to 700 RPM. Multibody dynamics modelled resultant inertial and frictional loads within 5%, while the discrete element method simulated the internal material contact loads with accuracies ranging from 1% to 19%. The combined simulation approach predicted the resultant forces in the critical kinetic joint within a 20% margin. Representing the charge using rigid lumped mass elements was also studied. The presented simulation techniques, validated against experimental data, offer a robust foundation for analysing larger systems, including the industrial-scale HICOM.

A finite element model of a 5 m radius DC arc ilmenite furnace in idling mode was used to test the notion that the slag solidifies when it comes in to contact with colder pig iron, thus constituting the initial step in the formation of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface. It was found that a slag that is 150°C hotter than the pig iron does not solidify at the interface. The 150°C temperature difference between the slag and pig iron is a result of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface, not the other way around as suggested in the literature. Calculations show that the thickness of the frozen slag at the slag-pig iron interface is 1.7 cm for the furnace used. It is proposed that slag solidification begins with the slow co-current flow of molten slag and pig iron in the outer parts of the furnace. This provides enough time for molten slag to interact with molten pig iron without solidifying. As the reduction products form due to reduction of the slag by carbon in the pig iron, the slag solidifies. This approach negates the need for the slag to solidify by merely coming into contact with an inherently colder pig iron. Making use of a low thermal contact conductance between the slag and pig iron was found to be sufficient to numerically capture the presence of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface and to preserve the 150C difference between the slag and pig iron phase.

The global liquified natural gas (LNG) storage market size is projected to reach USD17.5 billion by 2025. Currently, owed to its high toughness, tensile strength, and excellent weldability, the 9% nickel steel is the most used in building infrastructure for cryogenic applications such as the construction of tanks and pipes for storage and transportation of LNG. However, this alloy is not readily available because of its complex production process and high cost. This provides an opportunity for suitable alternative materials to build infrastructure for cryogenic applications. Among strong contenders is the Fe-Mn based alloys, which have sparked global interest due to their desirable properties such as relatively lower density, low cost, high toughness and strength, due to a high manganese (Mn) content. These attractive properties render Fe-Mn based alloys preferred candidates to replace traditional steels in engineering applications in which strengthweight ratio is critical. In response, as a build-up to designing and developing austenitic Fe- Mn alloys, the present study employed density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles computational materials modelling technique to investigate the structural, thermodynamic, and magnetic properties of binary Fe-Mn alloy composition in competing FCC, HCP, and BCC crystal structures. Using this approach, it was possible to unravel the key underlying elastic properties that are directly correlated to experimental tensile strength and high toughness in binary Fe-Mn alloys. Besides successfully validating the existing experimental data, the current predicted properties and the deployed approach will serve as a benchmark from which further alloying required to improve other properties will be conducted.

Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability
