Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

Abstract: A series of numerical tests of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks were performed to investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude and gradient on initiation and propagation of tensile fractures. The numerical tests were run with a Rock Failure Process Analysis code, F-RFPA2D, incorporated with a Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model (FSD). To investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude on fracture behaviour, “pinch-off” breaking tests, originally employed by Bridgeman to investigate the effective stress law for tensile fracture in a uniform pore pressure field, were numerically modelled. In another numerical test, a double-notched sample, with fluid pressure in one notch while keeping the other one open to the atmosphere, is numerically extended to investigate how the fluid flow direction or the pore pressure gradient will influence the fracture behaviour. The simulation results show that fracture is strongly influenced by both pore pressure magnitude and pore pressure gradient. Diese Pruefungen wurden mittels der Analyse- Software F-RFPA2D und Flow-stress-Damage Coupling model ( FSD) durchgefuehrt. Um den Einfluess der Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung auf den Bruch zu beurteilen, wurden auch Bruchpruefung und nummerische Analogexperimenten gemacht, und dadurch wurde die ganze Phase der Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten wiedergezeigt, und die Ergebnissen ergeben sich, dass die Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung und der Porisitaet sehr viel auf den Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten der Tension von Gebirgen beeinfluessen. Le logiciel F-RFPA (Rock Failure Process Analysis code ) intégrant FSD ( Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model ) y a été employé. Les résultats des simultations montrent tout le processus de la naissance et de la propagation des fractures sous la pression de pore. A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000 - 1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72 - 80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65 - 85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read’s or Hoek & Brown’s yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Une méthode de prédiction des contraintes à la rupture autour d'excavation, établie sur la base de cartographie géologique et d'information sur la mécanique des roches, à été étudiée. Au total, 7 km d'un tunnel nouvellement percé à une profondeur de 1000 à 1400 m ont été cartographiés dans la mine de Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi en Finlande. La roche principale du site est une vulcanite dur ayant une résistance à la compression uniaxiale de 230 MPa (valeur moyenne) et une valeur GSI de 72 - 80. La contrainte in situ maximale autour du tunnel se situe entre 65 et 85 MPa. La prédiction des contraintes à la rupture observées a été évaluée en comparant les résultats d'une simulation 3D d'un tunnel avec trois critères de limite d'élasticité statistiques. Le critère de limite d'élasticité de Read ou de Hoek & Brown’s se trouvent être les plus important, même si les effets de l'anisotropie sont significatifs. Les paramètres les plus importants ayant une corrélation avec la rupture sont l'orientation du tunnel et la foliation de la roche. De plus, le type de roche et sa résistance à la compression, la forme du tunnel et les anomalies géologiques ont aussi leur importance. Finalement, un délai dans la cartographie résulte en une diminution nette des ruptures violentes. Basierend auf kartierten geologischen und felsmechanischen Informationen, wird eine Methode untersucht, um spannngsbedingtes Versagen um Ausbrüche herum vorherzusagen. Insgesamt werden 7 km neu ausgebrochenen Tunnels in einer Tiefe zwischen 1000 und 1400 m in der Inmet Pyhäsalmin Mine in Finnland kartiert. Das hauptsächlich vorkommende Gestein ist sehr hart und vulkanischen Ursprungs mit einer mittleren einachsialen Druckfestigkeit von 230 MPa (Medianwert) und einem GSI-Wert von 72-80. Die maximale In-situ-Spannung im Tunnel beträgt 65-85 MPa. Die Vorhersage von beobachteten Spannungsversagen werden weitergeführt indem man elastische 3-D-Simulationsergebnisse von Tunneln mit drei statistischen Fliesskriterien vergleicht. Read's oder Hoek's Fliesskriteria werden dabei als die relevantesten Kriterien angesehen, obwohl auch der Effekt der Anisotropie als wesentlich erachtet wird. Die wichtigsten Parameter für eine Korrelation von Spannungsversagen sind die Orientierung des Tunnels und die Schieferung der Gesteinsschichten. Desweiteren haben Gesteinsart, Tunnelprofil und geologische Anomalien ihren Einfluss. Ausserdem zeigt sich, dass eine Verzögerung bei der Kartierung die ausgeprägtesten Versagen deutlich verringern.

Two different methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making have been proposed to solve the problem of mining method selection in the paper titled ?Mining method selection by multiple criteria decision making tool, by Bitarafan and Ataei. This problem is really important and also difficult to solve because of the need of handling many criteria simultaneously in the process of decision making. Bitarafan and Ataei have selected 15 criteria for the case study in their paper and those criteria have not been clustered/grouped yet. The number of selected criteria is only 15, although there are more criteria that should be handled in a real case, because they have used Saaty?s method in the section ?Fuzzy multiple attribute decision making? in their paper. Saaty?s method considers the pair wise comparison of criteria and uses random indexed which have already been derived and published. Available random indexes, however, have been derived for maximum 15 criteria so far.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.

The rapid fracturing and deformation that occurs around excavations during rock bursts demand that support and reinforcement systems have both deformability and damping capabilities. The energy demand and supply approach currently used in design is considered to be too simplified to represent adequately the rock burst process and the support and reinforcement system requirements. Momentum change may be a necessary second criterion for the analysis of dynamic loading situations. At the St Ives Gold Mining Company, DE plates made from conveyor belt rubber, and dynamic cables with sliding anchors have been developed and used to improve the dynamic performance of support and reinforcement systems. La fracturation rapide et la déformation qui se produisent autour des excavations lors de coups de terrain demandent que les systèmes d’armature et de support soient déformables et aient une capacité d’amortissement. L’approche basée sur l’énergie actuellement utilisée pour la conception est considérée être trop simplificatrice pour représenter adéquatement les coups de terrain et les paramètres de conception des systèmes d’armature et de support requis. Le changement de quantité de mouvement pourrait être un second critère nécessaire pour l’analyse des cas de charge dynamnique. St Ives Gold Mining Company a développé et utilisé des plaques « DE » constituées de caoutchouc de courroie de convoyeur et des câbles dynamiques avec ancrage coulissant afin d’améliorer la performance dynamique des systèmes d’armature et de support. Die derzeitlich gebraeuchliche Methode den Entwurf auf den Energiebedarf und dessen Abdeckung zu basieren, wird als eine unannehmbare Vereinfachung betrachtet, da sie den Felseinbruch und die benoetigten Unterstuetzungs– und Verstaerkungssysteme unzulaenglich darstellt. Die Aenderung der Umstaende kann einen zweiten Ansatz fuer die Analyse der Lastsituation erforderlich machen. Die St.Ives Gold Mining Company hat DE Platten aus Foerderband-Gummi und elastischen Kabeln mit verschiebbaren Verankerung entwickelt und dazu verwendet, die dynamische Kapazitaet der Unterstuetzungs- und Verstaerkungssysteme zu verbessern.

We consider the Grubbs estimation of the precision of an online gauge. Typically, this type of estimation involves independent results from two or more reference instruments (sampling and laboratory analysis operations). The properties of the estimator are then independent of the product variability. However, the use of more than one reference instrument entails significant additional costs. The two-instrument Grubbs estimator, which is based on results from a gauge and a single reference instrument, has the disadvantage that its standard error is heavily dependent on the degree of product variability. We propose a new estimator that has a variance that is more or less independent of product variability. In fact, the variance is typically less than that of the Grubbs estimator based on the use of two reference instruments. In order to function successfully, our methodology requires some prior knowledge of the extent of product variability and of gauge precision. In practice, such prior knowledge is often available and it is a weakness of the traditional two - and three-instrument Grubbs methods that no use is made of such knowledge. The efficacy and robustness of the new method is illustrated by Monte Carlo simulation.

The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

In most cases, slope movement monitoring data are collected on a temporal basis and displacement or velocity is plotted against time in order to assist the engineer to make judgements about slope behaviour. Once an unusual behaviour pattern has been established, the data are then analysed to estimate when the key inflection points occur in the data, when the slope movements start to accelerate and, ultimately, when the slope is expected to collapse. The identification of these inflection points is sometimes difficult to achieve with the naked eye. This paper presents the application of a trend analysis technique, known as cusums, to assist in this process. The authors have presented a range of data from various real life examples which highlight the effectiveness of the cusums technique. A key aspect of the cusums technique is the use of a constant (K) against which data trends are assessed. This constant is best derived from slope performance data at each site, as each rock mass will behave in its own unique way. The authors have experienced slopes that have had threshold values ranging from 0.1mm/day through to 10mm/day, and therefore a conservative approach should be adopted when assessing the performance of slopes.

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.

Abstract The in-situ stress field is one of the primary parameters influencing the performance of underground structures particularly in the Himalayas where there is strong influence of topography and geology on in-situ stresses. It is always advisable to measure the in-situ stresses, in whatever best way possible. Hydrofracturing is one of the methods by which in-situ stress can be measured. This paper briefly describes details of the concept of Hydrofracturing in arriving at the in-situ stresses of the rock mass at Pancheswar Project. The data obtained from the tests has been analysed, interpreted and the results are presented in this paper. Kurzfassung Das Spannungsfeld an Ort und Stelle ist einer der wichtigsten Parameter, die das Verhalten der Untergrund-Struktur beeinflussen, insbesondere in den Himalayas, wo die Topografie und die Geologie einen grossen Einfluss auf die oertlichen Spannungen ausueben. Es empfiehlt sich stets die Spannungen an Ort und Stelle so gut wie moeglich zu erfassen. Die Hydrofraktur bzw hydrografisches Zerstueckeln ist eine der Methoden, die bei den Messungen der oertlichen Spannungen verwendet werden koennen. Diese Abhandlung beschreibt kurz Einzelheiten ueber das Konzept von Hydrofraktur bei der Bestimmung der Spannungen an Ort und Stelle von der Felsmasse bezueglich des Projekts Pancheshwar. Die gewonnenen Daten aus den Messungen wurden analysieret und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse werden dabei vorgelegt. Sommaire Le champ de contraintes in-situ est un des paramèters principaux influencant l’exécution des structures souterraines particulierèment en Himalaya où les forces in-situ sont fortement influencées par les caractéristiques topographiques et géologiques de la région. La fracturation hydraulique est une technique qui permet de mesurer des forces in-situ des massifs rocheux. Cet article décrit brièvement le mécanisme de fracturation hydraulique et présente les résultats de mesure des forces in-situ des roches au site du projet hydroélectrique de Pancheswar.

Historically, mine ventilation practices as it was referred to then and which was enforced by legislation of those days, focused primarily on the conditions in the working place and little attention given to actual exposures of workers to contaminants in the working environments. With the advent of the Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the South African Mining industry in 1994, findings in the report indicated that more attention should be given to occupational health of workers. The upshot of this report resulted in the promulgation of the new Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with certain sections of it devoted to all the aspects of occupational medicine and occupational hygiene. This paper describes the present situation with regards to statistics on occupational hygiene performance and compensation paid out to persons who have contracted occupational diseases, as well as the way forward in terms of legislation implemented in September 2002 on the chronic and acute issues affecting the mining industry in SA.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, slag, metal, entrained, granulation, ferromanganese Water granulation of certain slags with high metal entrainment has customarily not been practised, not only due to the belief that such processes are too dangerous and unproven in the pyrometallurgical industry, but also that it might not be economically viable or environmentally acceptable. General slag granulation, on the other hand, is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. Thus, purpose-designed granulation and solidification processes are discussed, taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte, or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice. This paper addresses three issues, namely: ? Water-granulation of BOF steel slag, without processing it to render it environmentally safe, physically and chemically acceptable for use by the construction industry, and the process economical ? Processing air-cooled BOF steel slag to change its physical and chemical properties to be acceptable for various uses and extracting metallic and bound iron ? Processing air-cooled or molten manganese slag to lower its manganese content to a level that is acceptable from an environmental and health point of view, and extracting FeMn-alloy of acceptable composition. The latter process culminated in a patented process to extract FeMn from air-cooled and molten manganese slag, and, at the same time, produce a hydraulic (cementitious) slag, thus transforming a possible hazardous by-product into virtually 100% saleable products.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

ABSTRACT: The technique of various kinds of numerical analysis offered remarkable results to explication of many rock mechanical phenomena. These techniques regarded a rock stratum as a continuum body and solved the governing equation of continuum mechanics by using finite differ-ence method, finite element method and/or others. Using numerical analysis based on continuum mechanics, however, the simulations of destruction phenomena caused by elastic waves and on the other hand, the elastic wave propagation which generated by fracturing events are quite difficult. In this paper, we express a rock stratum by a granular body model and develop a simulation tech-nique can simulate both wave phenomena and destruction phenomena at once. The DEM (discrete element method) simulation results are compared with finite difference solutions of elastic wave equation. Furthermore, we simulate Hopkinson effect by this proposed method. Hopkinson effect is famous as a destruction phenomenon caused by elastic wave propagation. ABRISS: In dieser Studie drücken wird eine Felsschicht durch ein Granularkörpermodell aus und entwickeln eine Simulationstechnik, die sowohl Wellenphänomene als auch Zerstörungsphänomene simulieren kann. Die Ergebnisse der Simulation mit DEM (Diskrete-Elemente-Methode) werden mit denen der Finit-Differenz-Lösung von Gleichungen elastischer Wellen verglichen. Desweiteren simulierten wir den Hopkinson-Effekt mit dieser vorgeschlagenen Methode. Der Hopkinson-Effekt ist als Zerstörungsphänomen berühmt, verursacht durch Fortpflanzung elastischer Wellen. RESUME: Dans cette étude, nous exprimons un lit de roches par un modèle à corps granulaire et développons une technique, permettant de simuler d'un coup le phénomène des ondes et le phé-nomène de destruction. Les résultats de la simulation DEM (méthode d'éléments discrets) sont comparés aux solutions à différence finie de l'équation d'ondes élastiques. En outre, nous simulons l'effet d'Hopkinson par la méthode proposée. L'effet d'Hopkinson est connu comme phénomène de destruction, causé par la propagation d'ondes élastiques.

Volumetric flow and mass flow are two of the critical process parameters needed to understand and control flotation processes, with others being levels, densities, and metal analyses. Both volumetric flow and density measurements can be adversely influenced by entrained air, which will result in artificially high flow readings and artificially low mass flow calculations. Array-based instrumentation has been used successfully to accurately measure both volumetric flow of aerated slurry and the quantity of air entrained within the slurry. The latter measurement has been used to correct density measurements, thus providing an accurate mass flow calculation. A case study involving the use of this technology to measure both flow rates and air entrainment levels at Eland Platinum processing facility (concentrator) will be covered in detail. In addition, with certain traditional flow meters such as electromagnetic meters, erroneous volumetric flow rates can be recorded in the presence of paramagnetic or ferromagnetic material. The use of this array technology to avoid spikes in measurements due to steel fragments passing through the pipe will also be discussed.
