The Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed an experimental coke oven, using a commercial oven as a model where practicable. Because the rate of carbonization is important in determining the quality of the coke produced and may affect the "mount of pressure developed during carbonization, particular attention was given to those elements of the design that govern the heat transfer to the charge. The new oven deviates in design from most existing test ovens in that the charge is full width (17 inches), the heating walls ore constructed of 4-1/2-inch silica brick, and zoned, heat-input arrangements compensate for heat losses at the ends, top, and bottom of the charge. This report describes the oven, which was designed by H. S. Auvil and installed under his direction, at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., while he was supervising, engineer, Coke Section. It gives the results of a limited number of carbonizing tests. These results indicate that the main objective in designing and building this oven, that off duplicating commerical, slot-oven carbonizing conditions, has been accomplished; if coke-discharge conditions simulate commercial-oven conditions, the cokes from the experimental oven arc very similar to oven coke, in soma tests being fully as close is duplicate tests from a Angle batch of coke.

The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

To determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions, a demonstration of dozer blades specifically designed for recontouring mine spoil was conducted at an East Texas surface coal mine. The specialized equipment included a 48-foot angle blade, a modified 24-foot "U" blade, a 13-foot deep "U" blade, and a 24-foot grading bar. Both the 4b-foot and the 24-foot "U" blades were mounted in a two-tractor, single-operator configuration. To meet flotation problems common in this mining region, a 22-foot lightweight blade was developed and demonstrated for use on a 400-430 hp tractor. The demonstration involved 1,185 acres and showed a 50% reduction in reclamation costs and a 47% reduction in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. Improved equipment, trained operators, good supervision, and improved monitoring techniques contributed to the savings. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here along with guidelines for application of findings.

Improvements in production of high-purity chromium metal by magnesium reduction of anhydrous chlorides and by hydrogen treatment of electrolytic chromium are reported. Hydrogen-treated chromium has been arc-melted, and the arc-melted material has been successfully forged, rolled, and swaged. The material also has been forged at liquid-air temperatures. X-ray and metallographic studies indicate the recrystallization temperature of rolled chromium sheet to be about 750° C. Preliminary investigation of hot-bending characteristics of rolled chromium sheet shows the minimum bending temperature to be about 325° C. The heat resistance of chromium has been investigated.

This Bureau of Mines report is devoted to descriptions of systems that provide in-mine wired telephone service. Although they may incorporate other features, each system described functions to allow one telephone to selectively access another telephone. Except for the paper on Conventional Telephone Equipment, the equipment described is newly developed and specifically designed to satisfy the requirements of underground mine communications.

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with tie intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosives have born consolidated into two publications: Bulletin 343. Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 8220, Permissible Mina Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. The, purpose of this publication is to supplement Bulletin 343 and Information Circular 8220 with a listing of permissible equipment approved during 1963 and 1964. The removal of the mud sheaths that are deposited against the faces of productive oil sands during rotary drilling is one of the important problems confronting operators, especially in semidepleted fields where formation pressures are low. Unless the mud sheaths behind the perforated oil strings and, liners are removed and the sands exposed, oil cannot enter the wells. Consequently much oil that otherwise eight be produced from low-pressure sands is trapped and never recovered. Various types of perforation washers, down swabs, and agitators are used at present for breaking down the mud sheaths and. removing the disintegrated clay particles from wells after the perforated pipes have been inserted. Mechanical methods for removing mud sheaths are quite satisfactory, but prompted by tie request of certain operators in the California oil fields Bureau of Mines engineers have conducted a series of laboratory tests with the view of developing a chemical method for removing mud sheaths in oil wells that will be applicable to field conditions.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

Bureau of Mines research on the arc welding characteristics of titanium was initiated in 1948. Little was known about the art except that the easily contaminated metal required more protection from the atmosphere during welding than most other metals. Chambers were designed and built within which titanium could be welded with adequate inert gas protection. Welds were made and their properties studied, and prototype items were made successfully. This report, presenting a resume of the titanium arc-welding experiments undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, demonstrates that the process is successful if conducted under proper conditions and describes the welding of prototypes. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines' first report on methods of joining titanium covered the subject of spot welding,4/ outlining the conditions necessary for producing spot welds in ductile titanium consolidated by powder metallurgy methods and describing the characteristics of such welds. This report embraces the field of fusion weld-ing of titanium and traces the development of suitable methods and equipment for producing such welds.

This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.

In its geologic sense the term marble is applied to rocks consisting of crystallized grains of calcite or dolomite or a mixture of the two. Although limestone has the same chemical composition as marble it differs in that the component particles of calcium or magnesium car- bonates are granular and noncrystalline. In marble the crystals may be intimately intergrown, whereas limestone is an aggregation of unrelated particles cemented together into a solid mass. In its commercial sense the term marble has a much wider applica- tion. As susceptibility to polish is one of its chief commercial assets, all calcareous rocks capable of polish are classed as marbles. Lime- stones that show little crystalline structure may, if they take a good polish, be classed as marbles. Furthermore, serpentine rocks, even if they contain little calcium or magnesium carbonate, are classed as marbles, as they are commercial substitutes of true marbles.

Silica, the world's most abundant mineral compound, is composed of the two commonest elements - oxygen and silicon. In addition to being the life-giving constituent of the atmosphere and the major element in the waters of the earth, oxygen comprises almost half of all known terrestrial matter and occurs combined with most of the other ninety-odd elements in the solid crust of the earth; however, a large proportion of the oxygen is combined with silicon. Silicon is second only to oxygen in abundance in nature and constitutes more than one-fourth of all known terrestrial matter. The Bureau of Mines, as part of its Health and Safety Technology Program, is conducting research on the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for mine hazard detection. GPR offers a possibility of mapping immediate below-surface geologic conditions, including faulting and other anomalies, thereby exposing potential safety hazards to miners. This report summarizes a literature review of the current status of GPR research in and outside the Bureau.

[The term "nonmetallic minerals? as commonly used is the mining industry, refers to those minerals of industrial importance that are mined essentially for uses other than for the metals contained. The field comprises several hundred rod minerals of industrial importance, of which 70 have can adequately described in the textbook Industrial Minerals and Rocks. A few o f the more important nonmetallic products are sand and gravel, salt, phosphates, clays, refractories, limestone, and cement materials. Some of the minerals, such as bauxite and pyrolusive, have both metallic and nonmetallic applications, but in this report only the nonmetallic mineral phases are considered. In the organic field of nonmetallics only coal is considered, as, the others - petroleum, natural gas, natural bitumens, and hydrocarbons - are of no importance in water softening.]

Besides these three classes, drilling equipment has been incorporated in the design n of a number of permissible coal-cutting machines, but such drills are considered an integral part of the cutting machine and are not given separate approval. The hand drills have been described in Report of Investigations 3363, which is cite of several papers that have been published dealing with miscellaneous types of permissible motor-driven mind equipment not covered in bulletins. The present paper describes post drills and drilling machines approved by the Bureau of Mines up to July 1, 1937.
