This report presents an economic mineral assessment and Inventory of mines and prospects In the approximately 176,000-acre Patagonia Mountains-Canelo Hills Unit of Coronado National Forest. Deposits or areas most likely to experience future development are characterized in terms of their economics, based on data acquired by the author from a variety of sources, and supplemented by USBM field data collected by other workers in 1990 and 1991. Numerous mine maps, rock-chip sample assays, and detailed descriptions of mine and prospect sites are in this report and appendixes. Heavy but sporadic mining, mainly between the 1850's and 1950's was nearly all confined to the Patagonia Mountains. High-grade sulfide veins, replacements, and skarn deposits accounted for most of the production, which included large quantities of zinc, lead, copper, and silver, and considerable quantities of gold. Small Quantities of molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and placer gold have been mined. Most of the traditionally mined metalliferous sites will not see future activity due to the low tonnages present and removal of most high-grade rock. Possible future development areas include copper porphyries and breccia pipes; most are too deeply buried for current development. Localities where similar deposits may be concealed are identified.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

In situ stresses, based on isotropic and anisotropic relations, were evaluated using computer techniques from overcoring data obtained in dimension stone quarries along the Appalachian Piedmont, the Ozark Uplift, and the Ouachita Tectonic Belt. Stresses in the horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and range from 100 to 4,500 psi. The direction of maximum compressive stress seems to be alined with the general tectonic structure for most of the determinations. The ratio of the maximum to minimum elastic parameters in the horizontal plane ranges from 1.05 to 2.46 for these competent rocks. Isotropic versus anisotropic stress determinations show differences only as great as 25 percent in stress magnitude and 25° in orientation.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war attention was directed to prevent the destruction of American industries by sabotage. By Executive order of Lay 19, 1942, the Bureau of Mines was required to conduct investigations and make recommendations that would prevent loss of production of essential war minerals. The Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Lines was able to extend its activities with minimum loss of time to include security surveys of the important mineral facilities in the United States.A Mineral Production Security Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch with funds appropriated for that purpose by Congress in April 1942. From July 1942 to July 1945 engineers of this division, under the direction of D. Harrington, Chief, Health and Safety Branch, and J. J. Forbes, Chief, Mineral Production and Security Division, conducted investigations of 1,560 metallic and nonmetallic mines and associated facilities in accordance with the requirements of the Executive order.PURPOSEAn analysis of losses in the production of minerals shows that failure or destruction of equipment either from deliberate or accidental causes produces essentially the same result. Maximum production is insured by the prevention of subversive activities, fires, and industrial accidents."

A new generation of hydraulic mine support prestressing devices has been developed. These thin-walled steel shells are machine-welded and can be inflated with water or any liquid to provide prestressing for a wide variety of roof support products ranging from Can supports to props and cable bolts. With an expansion capability of several inches, depending on the geometry and size of the unit, they can also establish roof contact eliminating the need for wooden wedges or crib blocks that are commonly employed with several standing roof support products. Capable of withstanding pressures from 1,000 to 6,000 psi, these cells are able to transfer roof loading into the support structure without rupturing. A recent development has been the addition of an inexpensive yield valve that provides control of the maximum pressure and load development on the support. This paper examines the performance capabilities of these inflatable prestressing units and the impact they have on the performance of various support systems, including an evaluation of the overall stiffness of the support system and the load control during yielding of the prestressing unit. Recommendations are made regarding the design requirements of the prestressing unit to optimize the support performance. A summary of mine applications using this technology is provided with general comments regarding their impact on ground control.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

Study Design. Survival analysis techniques were used to compare the fatigue failure responses of elderly motion segments to a middle-aged sample. Objectives. To compare fatigue life of a middle-aged sample of lumbosacral motion segments to a previously tested elderly cohort. An additional objective was to evaluate the influence of bone mineral content on cycles to failure. Summary of Background Data. A previous investiga¬tion evaluated fatigue failure responses of 36 elderly lumbosacral motion segments (average age, 81 ± 8 years) subjected to spinal loads estimated when lifting a 9-kg load in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Results demonstrated rapid fatigue failure with increased torso flexion; however, a key limitation of this study was the old age of the specimens. Methods. Each lumbosacral spine was dissected into 3 motion segments (L1-L2, L3-L4, and L5-S1). Motion segments within each spine were randomly assigned to a spinal loading condition corresponding to lifting 9 kg in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, or 45°). Motion segments were statically loaded and allowed to creep for 15 minutes, then cyclically loaded at 0.33 Hz. Fatigue life was taken as the number of cycles to failure (10 mm displacement after creep loading). Results. Compared with the older sample of spines, the middle-aged sample exhibited increased fatigue life (cycles to failure) in all the torso flexion conditions. Increased fatigue life of the middle-aged specimens was associated with the increased bone mineral content (BMC) in younger motion segments (mean ± SD, 30.7 11.1 g per motion segment vs. 27.8 ± 9.4 g). Increasing bone mineral content had a protective influence with each additional gram increasing survival times by approximately 12%. Conclusion. Younger motion segments survive considerably longer when exposed to similar spine loading conditions that simulate repetitive lifting in neutral and flexed torso postures, primarily associated with the increased bone mineral content possessed by younger motion segments. Cycles to failure of young specimens at 22.5° flexion were similar to that of older specimens at 0° flexion, and survivorship of young specimens at 45° flexion was similar to the older cohort at 22.5°. Low back disorders (LBDs) are a major cause of both short- and long-term occupational disability in the United States, and it is clear that workers in certain occupations are more susceptible to LBD.2-5 Specifically, epidemiologic studies have shown that jobs involving heavy physical demands such as construction,2,3 mining,2,4 and farming,5 engender increased risk of back pain. These occupations are thought to experience high LBD rates as a result of their extreme postural and manual lifting demands. Studies have shown that jobs involving significant lifting 6-9 and jobs that involve frequent bending10-12 are associated with increased LBD risk. Workers in the mining industry, in particular, often have to lift heavy materials in restricted workspaces that compel torso flexion. An understanding of the impact of repeated loading of the spine in flexion on fatigue failure of spinal tissues is thus a critical issue for our research agency, which is concerned with reducing the pain and disability associated with LBD in the mining industry. It is well accepted that loads experienced by the spine during manual lifting tasks are sufficient to cause fractures in the endplates of lumbar vertebrae, particularly on repeated loading. 13-15 Endplate fractures may not be painful in and of themselves 16; however, evidence suggests that the process of internal disc disruption and disc degeneration may be initiated via endplate fractures. 16,17 It has been shown that endplate damage will alter the distribution of stress in the disc, resulting in buckling of the lamellas of the internal anulus.17 Once this process has been initiated, repeated spine loading will cause additional disruption of the anular fibers, resulting in formation of significant fissures or tears. 11-21 If these tears occur near or extend close to the outer portions of the anulus, a wound healing process is initiated, which involves infiltration of mast cells, macrophages, and re¬lease of cytokines and growth factors. 21 The presence of these infiltrates has been strongly linked to discogenic low back pain. 21,22 Indeed, for patients experiencing chronic low back pain, the prevalence of internal disc disruption is at least 39%,19 which represents the most

Electrical arcing injuries are the most common form of electrical injury in mining. MSHA data show that 381 "non-contact electric arc burn" injuries occurred in the mining industry from 1996 - 2005. A more detailed study of data from 1990-2001 showed that five types of apparatus - circuit breakers, conductors, nonpowered hand tools, electrical meters and test leads, and connectors and plugs were involved in two-thirds of the lost workday injuries. Many of the protections from electrical arcing injury available to workers in other industries stem from the application of National Fire Protection Association Standard 70E - Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E). NFPA 70E is a generally accepted industry guideline document, but excludes underground mining from its scope. Many of its practices and procedures, however, can be applied in the mining workplace to supplement the existing electrical safety requirements of Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations. This paper describes how NFPA 70E can be applied to mining workplaces after an analysis of the mine power system electrical arcing hazards has been completed (and Hazard/Risk Categories determined) using the tables from NFPA 70E or the calculation method as described in IEEE 1584. NFPA 70E can then be used to determine the levels and types of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to protect miners against burn injuries. Appropriate lockout and tagout (LOTO) procedures for use in the mining industry are also described. Suggestions for better selection of electrically-rated hand tools are included. Recommendations for electrical meter selection and use based on transient withstand capability are also discussed.

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. [The Bureau of Mines has measured the low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies of crystalline K2Si2O5 as part of a program for advancing mineral resources technology with energy economy. High-temperature enthalpies of glassy and liquid K2Si2O5 and crystalline K2SiO3 were also mea¬sured. An adiabatic calorimeter operating over the range 5 to 308 K was used for the heat capacity measurements for K2Si2O5 from which the standard entropy at 298.15 K, S°298 = 45.55 ±0.05 cal/deg-mole, was calculated. Tabulated values of Cp°, S°, -(G° -HO°)/T, and H°-HO° from 5 to 300 K are given for K2Si2O5. A copper-block drop calorimeter was used in the enthalpy measurements, operating from 298.15 to 1,198 K for K2SiO3 and from 298.15 to 1,453.8 K for K2Si2O5. No transitions were found for K2SiO3. The KI2Si2O5 showed two reversible first order transitions, one at 510 K with a heat of transition of 0.29 kcal/mole and one at 867 K with a heat of transition of 0.38 kcal/mole. The heat of fusion for K2Si2O5 20 5 was calculated to be 8.42 kcal/mole. Relative enthalpies are given in equation form, and high-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, - (G°-H°298 )/T, and H°-H°298 . Also tabulated are ?H°, ?G°, and log K for formation of K2SiO3 and K2Si2O5 from both the elements and the oxides.]

The Trail Lake RARE II area comprises 1,300 acres (526 ha) in Lassen and Plumas Counties, California, adjacent to the Caribou wilderness. No mining claims, prospects, or quarries are reported within the study areas, and no evidence of potential mineral deposits was found during a field reconnaissance. Quaternary basaltic lava flows uniformly underlie the area. INTRODUCTION The Trail Lake (No. B5-095) RARE II further planning area occupies 1,300 acres (526 ha) adjacent to the Caribou Wilderness in Lassen and Plumas Counties, California. Susanville is about 30 mi (50 km) east and Chester is about 17 mi (27 km) south of the study area. Access from State Highways 44 and 36 is provided by well-maintained gravel roads.

The techniques are discussed briefly in the following sections. However, detailed information on the techniques is provided in the cited references. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane, if not properly controlled in the underground mine environment, is a safety concern due to the potential risk for an explosion. This is a particular problem during longwall mining, where the high rate and volume of coal extraction can result in the release of large amounts of methane from the mined coalbed and other adjacent gas-bearing strata. The variability and potential hazards of these sometimes unexpectedly high gas flows provide the impetus to develop methods to predict methane emissions into the underground workplace. A forecast of the volume of gas that might be released during coal mining is helpful for designing ventilation systems and for implementing optimum methane drainage strategies to help mitigate expected gas emission problems. A complete assessment of the need for methane drainage prior to mine development generally requires both an empirical and a theoretical approach. If there are active mines in the general area with similar geologic conditions and coal characteristics, a review of gas problems in those mines provides an initial insight into the level of gas emissions to be expected at a new location. In addition, relatively simple methods exist to determine the in situ gas content (volume of gas per unit weight of coal) of the coalbeds in a particular mining area, as well as the gas-in-place (volume of gas in the coalbed(s) within a defined geographic area).

Guidelines are provided for the design of explosion-proof electrical enclosures that will meet MSHA certification requirements according to Part 18, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations, and fulfill their intended service underground. The guide covers only those aspects of design which affect enclosure strength, ruggedness, endurance and flame path, i. e., the enclosure ability to properly contain an internal explosion. Internal static and explosion pressures, external impact and thermal heating load are treated as well as the proper selection of materials and welding procedures.

The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. COMBINED tonnage or natural abrasive materials sold or used in the United States in 1962 was 10 percent greater than that of 1961 and value was 9 percent higher. Production of crude artificial abrasives in the United States and Canada was up 14 percent in volume and 9 percent in value. Value of grinding-wheel sales increased 13 percent, and the value of coated-abrasives sales was up 10 percent. The value of imports and reexports declined, while the value or exports increased. [ ]

The year 1977 generally was a year of growth in overall world mineral industry activity, although there were downturns in major elements of the world's iron and steel industries. The sharp upturns in market economy nation activities that were noted in 1976, following the reduced performance levels of 1975, were moderated, and in the centrally planned economy nations, overall mineral industry activity apparently continued to increase, but at a pace in keeping with that of 1916 rather than at the higher rates of the earlier 1976's. Noteworthy during the year, if only in a negative sense, was the inability of world powers to reach any significant agreement on issues relating to deep seabed mining. Interest from a commercial viewpoint centered around deposits or so-called manganese nodules. These materials, which indeed are chiefly manganese in terms of their content on a quantitative basis, really were of commercial interest primarily far their copper, nickel, and cobalt content. Participants at the Third United Nations Law of the Sea Conference looked into seabed mining rights, but reached no mutually agreeable decisions.

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study intended to determine if horizontal stress trends exist and if the stresses can be projected for improved mine design in a selected coalfield. The horizontal stresses were determined in three mines in the Yampa Coalfield and one mine in the adjacent Danforth Hills Coalfield of northwestern Colorado. Stresses were determined from stress-relief measurements using a three-component borehole deformation gauge and overcoring techniques developed by the Bureau. A least-squares method of calculating the average rock stress components in the horizontal plane was performed. Physical properties of the rock from the test sites are also included. For the Yampa Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 363 to 1,956 psi, and the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the roof ranged from 235 to 875 psi. For the Dan-forth Hills Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 360 to 1,494 psi, and the maximum horizontal compres-sive stress in the roof was 1,033 psi. Results indicated a trend of low horizontal stresses in the Yampa Coalfield that have not impacted ground control conditions in mines less than 1,000 ft deep.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. roof drill. The instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine on roof drill, model 300, and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other roof drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other roof drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.
