There are no producing or developing mines or active mining claims in the Deschutes Canyon RARE II study area. Only two prospects were found; they have no identified potential for mineral resources. Thin diatomite deposits occur in the Pliocene Madras Formation. Development of sand and gravel deposits in the area could not favorably compete with similar deposits in the surrounding area which are closer to points of use. By mid-1982, active oil and gas lease applications covered about 25 percent of the area, a reduction from nearly 100 percent in early 1981. No holes were drilled for oil and gas exploration. INTRODUCTION Personnel of the Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center conducted a mineral investigation of the Deschutes Canyon RARE II area during the summer of 1982. The area, about 10 mi (16 km) southwest of Madras, Oregon, covers 10,890 acres (4,407 ha) in the Crooked River National Grasslands (fig. 1). The Deschutes River has incised a deep canyon into the north sloping elevated lava plain near the transitional boundary of the High Lava Plains and the Deschutes-Umatilla Plateau geomorphic divisions (Baldwin, 1964, p. 20).

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. Low-grade porphyry copper ores containing chalcopyrite as the primary mineral was leached by two strains of acidophilic, thermophilic microbes belonging to the genus Sulfolobus. Leach tests were conducted in glass columns heated to 60-70° C. Pinto Valley and San Manuel ores sized to -1/2 inch + 50 mesh were effectively leached by the thermophilic organisms, but pinto Valley and Cyprus Bagdad ores sized to -2 inch + 1/2 inch resisted leaching. Aeration did not contribute measurably to bacterial copper extraction, since two columns, one inoculated and one sterilized, having a rest/ leach cycle without recurrent aeration exhibited copper extraction patterns similar to those of the aerated columns. Distilled water can be substituted for 9K medium without diminishing copper extraction. Decreasing the pH of the leachate to about 1.8 enhanced the extraction of copper from pinto Valley ore with the thermophilic microbes. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was found to be relatively ineffective at copper extraction from pinto Valley ore. Of eleven solvent extraction reagents tested, Adogen 364 and Warsol at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.012 were inhibitory to oxygen uptake by the two Sulfolobus strains. Di-2-ethyhexyl phosphoric acid at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.01% and 0.001% were totally inhibitory to the respiration of both organisms.

Nine rock properties were determined for rocks coming from 49 locations and having a wide range of compressive strengths. Plots of the nine rock properties versus each other were prepared. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to obtain several equations for predicting compressive strength. Both linear and curvilinear relationships were assumed between compressive strength and the other rock properties. The prediction equations had multiple correlation coefficients ranging from 0.947 for an equation with 1 variable (point load tensile strength) to 0.986 for an equation with 25 variables. Of the properties tested only point load tensile strength could be used alone to estimate compressive strength with fair accuracy.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. The Piedmont physiographic province of east-central Alabama lies in a humid subtropical climatic zone. Such an area with mature land forms underlain by rocks rich in feldspars provides conditions condusive to development of gibbsite, a major source of alumina; a raw material for which the United States relies on foreign suppliers for 85 percent of its needs. Gibbsite occurs in the northern and inner sections of the Piedmont Province of Alabama in Coosa, Clay, Randolph, Chambers, Elmore, Tallapoosa and Lee Counties in soils and saprolite derived from amphibolites, granites, feldspathic hornblende gneiss and other gneissic rocks. The major occurrences of gibbsite are in areas underlain by hornblende gneiss in Chambers and Randolph Counties. This region provides the proper physiographic and mineralogical setting for large areas containing up to 25 percent of saprolitic gibbsite. These areas provide potential sources of alumina that could be used to meet the United States future needs. Narrow zones and pockets rich in gibbsite also occur in soil and saprolite derived from areally restricted feldspar rich zones of narrow linear amphibolites in the inner Piedmont and feldspathic zones in various granites distributed throughout the Piedmont.

To alleviate the hazard to personnel and danger to equipment caused by fires on large, mobile vehicles. The Approach: A system which automatically senses a fire at its early stage of development, warns the driver of the danger, and activates fire extinguishers in the zone of combustion, How It Works: The automatic fire protection system utilizes both thermal and optical sensors to detect the heat or light given off by a fire in the area of concern (Fig. 1). The system warns the driver of the hazard and then automatically extinguishes the fire with pressurized S-C class powder. The system can also be activated manually from the operator's cab or from ground level. Further, the automatic sequencing of the system can be manually overridden by the driver if he determines that the fire sensors have malfunctioned to cause a false alarm.

Mineral resources have been identified at seven properties in the, Middle Fork Judith study area (fig. 1, and table 1). Commodities consist of silver, gold, copper, lead, zinc, and marble. Eleven properties (fig. 1 and table 2) have potential for discovery of silver, copper, lead, zinc, or sapphire resources. Of principle interest are the mineral deposits within contact zones between the Yogo intrusive complex and the surrounding Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Contact alteration zones along the southern slopes of Yogo Peak have been prospected in a 2- to 3-mi (3.2-to 4.8 -km) long belt within the study area.

The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (Title 30) requires that a methane monitor be placed on every mining machine to continuously observe and record methane levels at the face. The monitor must provide a warning whenever methane levels are 1.0 percent or higher. An effective monitoring system will indicate a methane concentration of 1.0 percent on the mining machine before methane levels at the mining face reach 5.0 percent. Where the methane monitor is located on the mining machine is one of the most important factors that determines how effectively face methane levels can be predicted. Any change in the sampling location will result in a change in measured methane concentration. To protect the methanometer, it is usually located on the cutting boom at least 1 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) outby the front cutting bits. A face ventilation system using blowing tubing was simulated in a full-scale test facility. Methane released from the face area was monitored at multiple locations on a model mining machine as well as locations near the face. Based on the relationship between concentrations measured on the machine and at the face, criteria were developed for selecting the best machine locations for monitoring methane. Recommendations are given for revising methane action levels for alternative sampling locations.

This document presents the explosion-proof enclosures used severity of certification tests solutions to linear transient thermal and stress analyses of in underground mines. The results were used to assess the for enclosure windows relative to possible loads occurring in the actual mine environment. Cast iron electric light enclosures with polycarbonate and glass windows were analyzed under steady state thermal conditions (light burning) and for thermal shocks corresponding to an internal explosion (ignition of volatile mine gas) or external quenching (mine water spray system). Thermal shocks to the enclosure, caused by ignited gases or water spray, were applied via a series of load steps in the transient analysis. The temperature dependence of material I properties and of the film heat transfer coefficients were included in the model. The work demonstrates that thermally induced stresses are strongly influenced by the way the window is mounted in the enclosure. It also shows that the MSHA Thermal Shock Test, if performed on an unsupported lens (or window), produces lower stresses than the lens (or window) may experience in the mine environment.

Thirty mines and prospects were studied; 22 are within the Dolus Lakes RARE II area. Three properties within the area and one adjacent to it were determined to have indicated or inferred gold, silver, or molybdenum resources (fig. 1 and table 1) associated with quartz veins and shear zones or quartz-pyrite stockworks in granodiorite. Five other properties in the area and three just outside have potential for the discovery of gold and silver resources. Minor amounts of very fine-grained placer gold are in glacial outwash in and near the area. The John G. Carlisle Mine (fig. 1, no. 9) produced 120 oz (3.7 kg) of gold between 1897-1899. The Independence Mine produced 481 oz (15 kg) gold, 197 oz (6.1 kg) silver, and 189 lb (86 kg) of copper between 1926 and 1935. These mines are adjacent to the study area's northern boundary.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow in by the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Since roof falls in the vicinity of the working face in underground coal mines are a major source of fatalities and injuries in this country's coal mines, it is evident that the present systems of temporary support for use in this working area are ineffective. This seems to be chiefly due to the inconvenience of setting up heavy and awkward devices such as jacks, posts and the like, which also interfere with the movement of men and machines in this critical working area. This program was concerned with defining and testing commercially available materials that could be used as support elements in a more convenient flexible personnel shield. The objectives of this program were to: 1. survey the materials that might provide the support elements of a flexible-material personnel shield for use in underground coal mines and prepare a list of those materials which appear most suitable for use in coal mines. 2. prepare a proposed testing plan for the materials to be selected from the aforementioned list by the Bureau of Mines for further evaluation. The test plan was designed to provide the following information: a. Tensile strength. b. Proportional limit. c. Creep characteristics at room temperature. d. Elastic properties depicted by stress-strain curves. Properties were tested in two directions for woven fabrics. e. Density. f. Resistance to abrasion. g. Resistance to attack by mine atomsphere. h. Resistance to humidity. i. Impact characteristics.

An investigation of the quenching behavior of coal dust-air flames was carried out. The literature relevant to coal dust-air flames was reviewed, including information on the agglomeration, sedimentation, and dispersal of dust clouds. The simple equations relating the various concentrations involved in dust flame propagation are given and their implications elaborated. It is shown that the concentration seen by a moving flame in a sedimenting dust cloud can differ significantly from the concentration commonly measured in such experiments. The known dust cloud phenomena which appeared significant in flame propagation studies were experimentally evaluated, and quenching diameters, flame speeds, and lean propagation limits for several tube diameters measured. For Pittsburgh seam coal, the Minimum Quenching Diameter (MQD) for dust between 10 and 20 µm was found to be between 0.7 and 0.8 cm, and the lean propagation for 3.2-cm tubes to be approximately 200 mg/liter. Similar MQD data were also obtained for Pocahontas and Sewell coals, Beulah lignite, and a 50-gal./ton oil shale. The effect of temperature, coal particle size, and propagation tube material were also investigated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the three subunits (fig. 1) of the Homestead RARE II area (No. 6291) revealed no evidence of mining activity or mineral deposits in the area. The Iron Dyke Mine, 3 mi (5 km) outside the study area produced ore between 1916 and early 1982 from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in the Permian volcaniclastic Hunsaker Creek Formation of the Seven Devils Group. The Hunsaker Creek Formation does not crop out in the RARE II area, but extends into the area beneath Miocene flows of Columbia River Basalt. The abundant basalt in the area could be used as aggregate or dimension stone, but equivalent deposits exist closer to markets. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Homestead RARE II area (fig. 1) encompasses 6260 net acres (253U ha), in three units, of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Baker and Wallowa Counties, Oregon. Two small units of 160 and 300 acres (65 and 120 ha) are 5 mi (8 km) north and east of the main study area. Homestead, Oregon, on the Snake River, is about 3 mi (4 km) south of the two small areas, and about 3 mi (4 km) northeast of the main study area. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 86, U.S. Forest Service Road 39, and ancillary roads and trails.

The belt conveyor is one of the major pieces of equipment for transferring bulk material in mining operations. However, considerable amount of respirable dust may be generated whenever the bulk material is loaded, dumped, or transferred. This report identifies and evaluates various dust control technolgies applicable to belt conveyors, and describes how an integrated systems approach can reduce dust emissions at a transfer point. Phase I of the program consisted of literature search and a critical evaluation of various dust control technologies. The work established that a comprehensive approach to calculating exhaust volumes for dust collection system does not exist. The parameters that affect the wet dust suppression efficiency were also reviewed. Based on the Phase I work, bulk material handling system and dry dust collection or wet dust suppression systems were designed and installed at a number of transfer points in a limestone processing facility, a surface mine selected as a field test site. Field test data were used to determine the validity of various exhaust volume calculations at the different transfer points. The field test data also formed the basis for the evaluations of the relative effectiveness of commercially available and wet dust suppression systems in controlling respirable dust emissions.

This study was undertaken to determine miners' breathing zone concentrations of diesel exhaust components, to investigate any relationships between these concentrations and vehicle type, the presence of emission controls, vehicle usage, and ventilation conditions, and to make recommendations for monitoring and ventilation requirements. Twenty-four mines including two con l mines were surveyed. Sampling was done for CON, NON, SOx, PNA, aldehydes, and particulates. hi most mines, concentrations of at least one contaminant exceeded one half the standard or TLV. The concentrations of gases arc probably sufficiently reduced by a minimum air velocity of 50 fpm. A sufficient reduction of particulate concentrations may require as high as 400 fpm air velocity. Vehicle age, type, or usage appear to have little or no effect on contaminant concentrations. PNA levels were below detection limits in all but a very few samples. Minimum requirements for routine monitoring should include formaldehyde, COx, NO2. It is further recommended that better definition of the minimum ventilation requirement be obtained.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes a study of large-scale strata response to longwall mining at a western U.S. coal mine. This study utilized surface and subsurface measurements, geologic mapping, in situ stress measurements, and pressure cell readings to characterize strata behavior. Preliminary analysis of surface subsidence and time-domain reflectometry (TDR) was used to determine a suggested main roof caving sequence. Coal ejected from the face apparently resulted from brittle failures that occurred because of lack of significant yield zone development. The combination of a strong coal with pronounced directional behavior, low overburden pressures, a good caving roof, and a high-production environment that minimized time-dependent loading apparently reduced yielding of the longwall face. The panel 1 headgate-entry design appears adequate; however, the abutment pillar and adjacent panel tailgate rib are highly stressed and may contribute to problems during second panel mining. The small chain pillar yielded after passage of the face, but the pillar width may be near maximum since evidence of a stressed core exists.
