"The effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases.Electrokinetic methods were used to elucidate the mechanism of surfactants adsorption and to correlate these findings with the optimum flotation conditions. The polymeric surfactants would reduce the negative values of zeta potential of quartz while the reverse is true for feldspar. After treatment of microcline with HCl, its electrokinetic behavior in the presence of Tritons X surfactants became similar to that of quartz.The obtained results would suggest that separation of quartz from feldspar using nonionic surfactants of octylphenoletoxylated alcohols having shorter oxyethylenic chain length at low pH could be achieved"

Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

An investigation of the seeding mechanism using heterocoagulation and the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory of two pure minerals is the objective of this study. The seed was silica with modal diameters of 4.529 µm (fine particles) and 5.216 µm (coarse particles) and the test powder was hematite with a modal diameter of 0.883 µm. Parameters included variations in the concentration and particle size of silica. Both particles were first subjected to size determination and settling tests via Stoke’s Law. The silica-hematite system was then suspended in 0.001 M KNO3 electrolyte solutions where pH was adjusted. Afterward, the suspension was agitated and was allowed to settle at different time intervals while obtaining turbidity readings. Results through settling time and turbidity vs. pH graphs indicate that maximum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 2 to 5 while minimum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 6 to 7. At these pH levels the zeta potentials of silica and hematite are negative and positive, respectively. On the contrary, repulsive forces dominate the system from pH 8 to 11 due to the particles’ negative zeta potentials. Furthermore, the attachment of hematite to silica increases when the parameters become larger thereby increasing the effectivity of heterocoagulation at acidic to neutral pH levels.

N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

A cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column (FCSMC) is an effective separation device for fine grain treatment. The separation of fine ilmenite by FCSMC was explored in this work. The influence of reagents dosage (regulator, collector and auxiliary collector), pulp density, circulation pressure and aeration quantity on TiO2grade and recovery wasinvestigated.The optimal conditions of a rougher are follows: pulp density 45%, pH 5.0, MOH collector dosage 2800 g/t, diesel oil dosage 700 g/t, circulationpressure 0.19 MPa, aeration quantity 0.8 m3/(m2•min). The optimal conditions of a cleaner are follows: pH 4.0, circulation pressures 0.16 MPa, and aeration quantity 0.5 m3/(m2•min).A pilot plant continuous test with a rougher-cleaner by FCSMC for 72 hours was proceeded under the optimum conditions. Compared with industrial flotation machines, the concentrate grade of FCSMC is 48.11% with an improvement of 1.08 percentagepoints, while the recovery is 82.36% with 13.64 percentagepoints increment. Moreover, the flowsheet is simplified from six parts (a rougher-two scavenger-three cleaner) in flotation machines to two parts (a rougher-cleaner) in FCSMC. Proofs were also provided by the analysis of the by-size grade and recovery of concentrate.Results show the FCSMC is an effective separation device to recover -74 µm size fraction.

"The heavy residual fraction of the mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) plants treating undifferentiated municipal solid waste is mostly composed by inert materials, such as glass, stones, ceramics and brick. Glass, appearing in significant grade and amount, is not recycled today due to the high content in the other materials, mainly stones. All these materials have approximately the same density but stones have significantly different shape from other materials particles. In this paper it is presented the research developed to eliminate stones appearing in the fine fraction (2.8-8 mm) of the MBT plants heavy residual fraction (MBTr) using a shaking table operated in dry conditions. Two different samples from two different MBT plants were used. Firstly, the samples were characterized (materials content and particle size analysis). Then, laboratory work was carried out to optimize the operation of the shaking table, by changing the machine parameters, deck slope and movement frequency. The study showed that it is possible to upgrade the product in glass. The best results, obtained with one single stage of processing, were 82% content in glass with 84% in recovery, in the glass concentrate, when the coarser fraction (-8+5.6 mm) of one of the MBT plants was used. With the intermediate particle size fraction (-5.6 + 4mm), the glass concentrate attained 74% content in glass with 91% recovery."

TATA STEEL is the pioneer in coal beneficiation in India. The first coal beneficiation plant was set up in 1951 at West Bokaro and subsequently in 1953 in Jharia. Over the years more beneficiation capacity was added by setting up new coal washeries in both West Bokaro and Jharia, the coal divisions of Tata Steel. currently the beneficiation capacity available is 8.5 mtp aappx Being a captive supplier supplying the coking coal as per demands of our steel works is challenging in the sense that the intent is to leverage the captive raw material advantage and select the best strategy for maximizing value up to steel making. The beneficiation plants were designed to produce clean coal up to 17% ash. With the demand of increasing productivity at the blast furnace the clean coal ash was lowered. subsequently the processes were audited and efficiency improved. The next challenge was to improve the throughputs in the existing plants to maximize the clean coal production. The upgradation was designed in house and implemented to upgrade the plant from nameplate capacity of 2.1 mtpa to 4.5 mtpa while the yearly production targets were also achieved. The presentation will detail the different phases of improvements, process followed, challenges faced, and the results as achieved in the process. "Aqueous dispersions of air specifically prepared on the basis of flotation reagent solution acquire active properties in relation to the solid surface and may be imply as a medium for flotation ores. Such aerated solutions were defined as Activated Aqueous Dispersions of Air (AADA) with 5-6:1 ratio and the procedure of mineral separation was defined as a flotation process under non-equilibrium conditions. These procedures differ from conventional flotation mainly in reagent interaction with minerals through their adsorption films on gas bubbles simultaneously forming flotation complexes. Gas-liquid mixture is kept till an adsorption layer of reagents close to the limit value is formed on the surface of bubbles. The theoretical basis of AADA is considered.The results of two-phase gas- liquid mixture (AADA) were studied. Two versions of AADA were considered. Electrical surface potential of the air bubbles with the surfactant film, untreated minerals particles in Coulomb attraction and flotation complex formation were analyzed. Special flotation machines were constructed for separation of mineral suspension in air dispersion, whose effectiveness was confirmed in flotation of apatite waste of Kovdor ore. FK-9 machine introduced on Kovdor iron ore combine for the recovery of apatite from current departures of factory. The froth product contained 7.2 % P2O5, with recovery of 44 % apatite, which was processed for getting melted phosphoric-magnesium fertilizers."

In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. SHP-F3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) was successfully used to separate the complex and weakly magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Ji-uquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd (JISCO). It is more and more difficult to separate iron ores from gangues, such as quartz, jasperite and phyllite, as the properties of iron ores gradually become more complicated and refractory. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-F3200 HIMS, including modifying angle of magnetic polar from 90°to 83°, cooling exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing device to wash off magnetic particles, adjusting the tooth-space of matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm, so as to enhance the recovery of fine iron ore particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly-separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In this paper, after analyzing magnetic force exerting on iron ore particles within different separating sections of SHP HIMS, it is proposed to apply the flowing-film technique into the HIMS. Thus a new-type LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically, combined with a special flowing-film feeder to improve the existing SHP HIMS. The moving pattern of magnetic particles in pulp in HIMS separation district also has been analyzed in this paper. And the test on the SHP-F700 HIMS shows, under the condition of iron ore containing 30.52% Fe, with particle size of ?0.074 mm accounting for around 75%, if applied with flow-film technique, the iron recovery will be up from 69.45% to 76.07%, by 6.62 percent, with the same grade of concentrates of iron. The calculation of iron yield of every size fraction and the tests showed that film magnetic separation (Film-MS) could promote the iron yield of each size fraction, denoting an excellent result of application of the film technique to SHP HIMS. The mechanism of the film magnetic separation technique is to convert the turbulent flow and disordered movement of dynamic mass particles in the pulp into a directional and ordered laminar flow along the surface of tooth plate so as to strengthen the separation effects.

There is an obvious disproportion in Russia gold-mining industry between the structure of gold reserves and the gold-mining techniques. The bulk of gold (over 70%) is extracted from alluvial deposit, 20%~25% from bedrock occurrences and 5%~7% from complex copper-zinc and polymetallic ores. The proved gold-bearing reserves are distributed as follows: alluvial ?19%, bedrock ?80%, the latter being sufficient to supply gold at the current production level for 100 years to come. In Russia, like elsewhere in the world, development of primary gold deposits is considered a first-priority line of development for gold-mining industry. Most of the gold-containing ores characteristic of Russian gold deposits are resistant ores with gold content varying between 3 ppm and 5 ppm usually showing quite low gold and silver recovery by cyanidation. Processing resistance of gold-containing mineral complexes is related to the presence of gold particles of submicrometric (<1.0 µm) and nanometric (10~100 nm) size, mostly asso-ciated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. Therefore switching over to processing bedrock entails a num-ber of technological problems that stem from chemical and physical resistivity of ores. The chemical resistivity can be overcome through flotation, oxidation roasting, autoclave leaching (biohydro-metallurgical oxidation), etc. The physical resistivity can be dealt with by resorting to traditional power-intensive methods,e.g. grinding to a ?40µm size, thermal treatments of sulphide concentrates and non-traditional high-energy methods of liberating the sulphides by means of power attack, e.g. electro-chemical oxidation, exposure to electron beam radiation and other methods. The modern non-traditional processes for treatment of rebellious noble metal-bearing ore, aimed at improving disintegration efficiency for finely dispersed mineral complexes are analysed. Advantages and perspectives of a new high-efficient, energy-saving and ecologically safe process of the nanosecond high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) effect are proved. The said process provides a stable increase in the valuable component recovery at lower energy consumption and production costs of the finite product at the stage of dressing rebellious gold-bearing ores and concentrated products. The experimental data prove high efficiency of the preliminary impulse treatment, thus, the increase in the gold recovery at the cyanidation stage amounted to 4%~12% from rebel-lious ores, 10%~30% from gravity concentrates, 5%~45% from flotation concentrates, 30%~80% from oil flotation tailings.

The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. "Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

Gravity separation technique is widely used in mineral beneficiation practices for its low cost, ease of operation, and eco-friendly nature. The most commonly used gravity methods for beneficiation of iron ores are shaking table, jig and spiral methods which aren&apos;t very effective for iron mineral fines. Multi-Gravity Separator (MGS) is suitable for the treatment of fines with a maximum particle size of approximately 500 µm. This study was performed on a low-grade haematite iron ore from Chadormalutailing dams. Detailed mineralogical, physical and chemical characteristics of a goethiticlateritic iron ore showed that the sample contained porous and friable oxides and hydroxides of iron. The ore sample had a feed grade of 35% Fe, 1.1% FeO, 15.5% SiO2 and 8.5% Al2O3. Haematite and goethite are the main iron-bearing minerals while quartzite and kaolinite are the major gangue mineral constituents. In this paper, the statistical evaluation and optimization of grade and recovery using a factorial design of experiment (DOE) method has been carried out for Chadormalulow grade ultra-fine haematite tailings with MGS. The input process parameters considered are drum speed, tilt angle, wash water flow rate and pulp density. The results show considerable improvements in both the quality characteristics such as grade and recovery with statistical evaluation and optimization, compared to the initial value of grade and recovery. Copper concentrate containing complex sulphides of Cu-Ni with 14.13% Cu and 10.04% Ni besides impurities such as 0.33% Co and 0.71% Mo, is not acceptable to the copper smelters due to the smelting problems. Selective bioleaching of nickel from the concentrate can be considered an an option to make it suitable for copper smelter. Effect of elemental sulphur and pyrite on the bioleaching of Ni and Co has been investigated using a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A.f.) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A.t.). Parameters such as pH, temperature, particles, size etc. were optimised to understand the role of additives in the bioleaching. With 2% S at 308K, 2.0 pH, 5% pulp density and 200µm size particles while shaking at 100 rpm, 79% Ni, 41% Co and 5% Cu were bioleached as compared to the leaching of 81% Ni and 45% Co in presence of 10 wt% pyrite in 60 days; 27% Ni, 24% Co and 4% Cu were recovered in sterile experiment. The selective dissolution of nickel and cobalt as compared to copper may be explained by galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite: pentlandite / pyrrhotite. Bioleaching was facilitated by strong oxidizing conditions due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio/redox potential (ESCE) as a result of improved interaction of minerals through biooxidation of sulphur and accelerated galvanic interaction by pyrite. "The flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, using the new effective collector Dh was studied in this paper, respectively, and the flotation properties are described. The good qualities of the new collector Dh were revealed through comparing with other collector of Rare Earth minerals. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH (8.5-9.5), Rare earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium, calcium and silicon bearing intergrowth minerals (barite, calcite and silicate minerals) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be obtained successfully by the new collector Dh, acid silica gel, turpentine and reagents fitting together rationally. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents (Dh and acid silica gel) on the flotation were investigated in the test.Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for Dh and Rare Earth cation by analysis in theory shows that Dh formed chelate complex with Rare Earth cation and were adsorbed on the surfaces of Rare Earth minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by acid silica gel can be explained as gummy colloid hydrolyzed from acid silica gel which are selectively absorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, with pulp pH value of alkalescent."

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is traditionally used in plant operation to separate feldspars from quartz. It acts during the conditioning step as a pH regulator and an activating agent providing an excellent selectivity. However, a corrosive chemical environment and the ecological impacts from the potential fluoride ion contamination are limiting factors to use this chemical agent at an industrial scale. Investigations of the amine-feldspar interactions in the absence and presence of non-linear long-chain alcohols were carried out on two ore samples. The presence of alcohol molecules led to form a closed packed layer only on the surface of feldspars. The highest order and packing at the feldspar surface were observed with a particular alkyl chain structure as Guerbert alcohols. A new flotation process was developed and tested at both lab and pilot scales on different feldspar ores. The Guerbert alcohols allow to perform a feldspar concentrate with very low content in quartz (2.3-3.5 %) and feldspars recovery from 78 to 81 % while the aliphatic isoalcohols show a more higher recovery level (88-89 %). New HF-free process is strongly dependent on the pH range (1.7-2.5) and sulphuric acid consumption during conditioning steps. Optimal amine/alcohol weight ratio is ranged between 0.8 and 1.0. The values below 0.8 decrease strongly the flotation selectivity and the quartz recovery within the feldspar concentrates is higher than that occurs with HF.

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980.s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão - GO), Bunge (Cajati - SP), Fosfértil (Tapira - MG) and Copebrás (Catalão - GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

Jigging has a very important role in mineral processing Industry. Upgrading of Iron Ore by jigging has been an emerging trend. A detailed investigation is carried out to understand the influence of Jig feed granulometry and bed height during jigging operation. Noamundi jig plant data shows that variation in jig feed granulometry, feed quality and bed height are major contributors to fluctuation in jigging performance. At Noamundi the feed size (-10.0+0.5mm) fraction is used for fines jigging operation. To understand the effect of granulometrey on jig plant performance such as yield, separation efficiency and Fe recovery. In this context The performance of jigging was evaluated by daily average data from jig operation was used to study the influence of feed distribution on jigging performance .Coarser fraction (+6mm) has a positive influence , whereas fines fraction (-0.5mm) tends to lower performance . During Jigging rearrangements of Particles takes place due to an alternate expansion and compaction of Jig Bed .These particles are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom. During the particle stratification, Jig bed physically cut at desired horizontal particle density plant to separate the desired product. Investigation shows that optimum bed height is required at different Jig feed quality to achieve desired product quality, maximum separation efficiency and Fe recovery. This Paper will illustrate role of granulometry and Bed height control on Jigging plant performance.

The interaction of sphalerite- and galena-adapted Bacillus polymyxa (B. polymyxa) cells with sphalerite and galena has been investigated through adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies. The amount of sphalerite-adapted cells adsorbed onto sphalerite and galena is found to decrease with increase in pH. On the other hand, the adsorption density of galena-adapted cells onto galena shows a feeble maximum around pH 8, and the amount adsorbed is marginally higher in the pH range of 8 . 11.5. In the case of sphalerite the amount adsorbed is higher in the pH range of 5 to 7. The adsorption density of both the adapted cells is higher for galena vis-à-vis sphalerite. Electrokinetic studies indicate significant surface chemical changes on the chosen sulphide minerals and the bacterial cells, consequent to microbe-mineral interactions. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite could be preferentially floated from galena, using galena-adapted cells, but not with the sphalerite-adapted cells. The cells adapted to galena assay a higher polysaccharide content and are more hydrophilic, while the sphalerite-adapted cells have a higher protein content and possess greater hydrophobicity. Transmission electron microscopic studies have provided evidence in support of the differences between the cell surface characteristics of sphaleriteand galena-adapted cells. Possible mechanisms of interaction between the minerals and the bacterial cells are discussed.
