Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are forme d by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn3 4+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

Present study was stemmed from the survey associated with deep-sea mining in the KODOS area between Clarion Fracture Zone and Clipperton Fracture Zone located in the North Pacific Ocean. The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of North Pacific gyre, is oligotrophic waters with low nutrients and chl-a concentrations below 1µg/l (MOMAF, 1996). This area is also characterized by divergence at 8°N and convergence at 6°N, which moved northward or southward in the range of a few kilometers with seasonal and climate changes. If the waste materials related to deep-sea mining are intruded into the surface waters continuously, unexpected effects to water column ecosystem are anticipated negatively. In order to assess the impact on the planktonic ecosystem, natural variation need to be distinguished from anthropogenically induced variation in terms of the abundance and species composition of plankton. In this study, mesoscale variation of zooplankton community was reported in relation to the physical conditions in the northeastern Pacific during 1998 and 1999. Temperature and salinity were determined using a CTD from surface to 200m depth in July 3-20, 1998 and in June 22-July 1, 1999. Zooplankton samples were collected from two different depths (0-50m, 50-200m) by vertical towing using an opening-closing net (100cm diameter and 300 µm mesh size). The samplings were carried out at every one degree between 5° and 12°N (1998), between 5° and 11°N (1999) along the meridional lines of 131°30´ W. The net was lowered to the depth of interest from a stationary research vessel and towed upward to collect zooplankton at a speed of 25~30 m per minute. Zooplankton samples were transferred to 1-l sampling bottles and immediately fixed with neutralized formalin into the final concentration of 5%. Considering the characteristics of zooplankton such as diurnal vertical migration, all samplings were done during the nighttime. The volume filtered by the net was calculated from the readings of flow meter (Hydro-Bios Model 438-115). Zooplankton were identified to the genus level and enumerated under a microscope. The abundance of zooplankton at each station was expressed as the numbers/100 m3.

The extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland has collectively been referred to as the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridges (AMOR). The AMOR extends from the northern shelf of Iceland, to the Siberian shelf in the Laptev Sea, passing en route through the Norwegian- Greenland Sea, the narrow gateway of the Fram Strait, and across the Eurasia Basin. The AMOR is 4000 km long and is divided into six super segments: 1) the Kolbeinsey Ridge, 2) the Mohns Ridge, 3) the Knipovich Ridge, 4) the Molloy Ridge, 5) the Lena Trough, and 6) the Gakkel Ridge. After continental rifting at 60-50 million years ago, around 2.5 million km2 of oceanic seafloor has formed by seafloor spreading - resulting in the formation of the Norwegian- Greenland Sea and the Eurasian Basin. This northernmost part of the global ridge system is anomalous in several ways: The seafloor spreading takes place at an ultraslow rate (less than 2 cm/y) with spreading rates decreasing northward to around 1 cm/y at the Gakkel Ridge - which is the most slow-spreading ridge on Earth. As a result, the volcanic activity along the northern part of the AMOR is low, the oceanic crust is unusually thin (around 3,5 km at the Knipovich Ridge, Kandilarov et al.2010), and the rift valley is deep (average water depth > 3 km). In the southern part of the AMOR, the ridge system is affected by the Icelandic plume and a hot spot below Jan Mayen. The ridge-plume interaction results in higher volcanic productivity, unusually thick oceanic crust (9-11 km, Kandilarov et al. 2012) and shallow ridge segments (1500-100 m). The AMOR also display contrasting spreading regimes, whereas some super segments are dominated by orthogonal spreading (Kolbeinsey and Gakkel Ridge) others are characterized by highly oblique spreading (Mohns and Knipovich ridges). Some ridge segment displays asymmetric spreading, like the Mohns Ridge where core complexes preferentially form along the northwestern flank. Together these variations in ridge characteristics results in large diversity of hydrothermal systems and associated mineral deposits.

The Kurile Arc consists of at least 100 submarine volcanoes and 5 submarine calderas located mainly in the rear arc (Figure 1). The arc is seismically very active, particularly in the south, and is characterized by extensive volcanism and hydrothermal activity. At least one subaerial volcano on the arc (Medvezhy located on Iturup island) has an extremely shallow magma chamber and is intensely active.

?ORE? is defined as ?mineral/s that can be mined at a profit?. So, what is ORE at 2,000 m water depth? Is it 5% Copper or 1.8% Nickel/Cobalt? One of the key factors that determine what is ORE, profitable or not, is the cost of mining and extraction. Therefore a determination of ORE requires a commercial and technical appreciation of both sea bed mining equipment and mining options. Perry Slingsby Systems (PSS) have built more remotely operated submarine work vehicles, including 900HP trenching machines, than any other company. With Nautilus Minerals, PSS have been studying a range of deep ocean mining solutions. This paper discusses the commercial and technical issues of various extraction techniques applicable to deep ocean mining from 1,500 m to 5,000 m water depth. Issues such as the rate of extraction, (i.e. tons per hour) is a key economic component and is often constrained by the design and horsepower of the miner. Likewise the design itself of the mining machine and cutting heads can determine the size of material produced which impacts on methods of lifting the ore to surface. Issues such as overburden, sea floor conditions, style of mineralization and physical properties of the ore, obviously affect the selection of appropriate mining machine configuration.

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

In September-October 2002, shallow seafloor drilling using the 5 m-Rockdrill of the British Geological Survey and the German R/V Sonne has revealed critical information on the sub-surface nature of two distinct hydrothermal systems in the New Ireland fore-arc and the Manus Basin of Papua New Guinea. Drilling at the summit plateau of Conical Seamount (39 holes, 31 % recovery) south of Lihir Island in the central New Ireland fore-arc has confirmed the sub-seafloor extend of previously discovered surface gold mineralization (up to 230 g/t Au) and associated alteration to a depth of at least 4.5 m below the seafloor and further proven analogies to the giant Ladolam epithermal gold deposit on Lihir Island. Drill core samples of clay-silica alteration contain average gold grades up to 14.2 g/t Au over a length of about 30 cm (fire assay Lihir Gold Ltd. laboratory) and appear to be part of a more extensive gold zone located below a carapace of relatively fresh ancaramitic and trachybasalt. These samples contain a complex mineralogy including realgar, orpiment, galena, sphalerite, some chalcopyrite and pyrite, together with amorphous silica, and possibly cinnabar. In addition to high concentrations of gold, shipboard analyses indicate that the gold-rich samples contain high values of Pb, As, and Sb, which is a characteristic feature of a magmatic-hydrothermal style of mineralization and alteration.

Environmental properties of the northeast Equatorial Pacific along 131.5 degrees west, between 5 degrees and 13 degrees north latitude, were investigated in association with changes in water column structures during the summer seasons of 1998 and 1999. Climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected this area during the study period. In 1998, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 90~110 m water depth. However, in 1999, a very fluctuating thermocline was observed with latitudes. As a result of changes in the water column structures, biological and chemical environment also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes in other physical parameters. Inorganic nutrient depleting areas, especially for nitrate+nitrite and phosphate, or oligotrophic regions were extended down to approximately 100 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In the euphotic zone, depth integrated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) values were 34 g-N/m2 (grams of Nitrogen per square meter of sea floor), 7 g-P/m2 in 1998 and 130 g-N/m2, 18 g-P/m2 in 1999, respectively. The results indicated that nitrogen (96 g-N/m2) and phosphorus (11 g-P/m2) are supported by up-welling and down-welling phenomena with convergence and divergence in the study area. Biological parameters in the water columns were largely determined by the physico-chemical environmental parameters. Subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers were coincided with the formation of seasonal thermocline. Copepods were the dominant group of zooplankton community at three sampling stations (N5, N6, N10) terms of abundance, which was the same results of previous surveys for the past 3 years. Among copepod populations, Oncaea sp., Oithona sp. Clausocalanus sp., Acarocalanus sp. and juvenile copepodites were dominant Appendicularians, foraminiferans and radiolarians were also dominant. To investigate diel vertical migration pattern of zooplankton, repeated samplings from the water depth of 0~50m and 50~200m were conducted at KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area before and after sunrise. Zooplankton abundance was slightly higher after sunrise than before sunrise in the surface layer. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were relatively low as the concentration of sediment increased in most experiments possibly due to a decrease of grazing pressure of microzooplantkon such as ciliates, which is the efficient grazer on small-sized phytoplankton. Because copepod predation on microzooplankton may be prevented by the high concentration of sediment, resulting in lower grazing pressure on small-sized phytoplankton. The results obtained during the baseline study as a part of KODOS project since 1998.

Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. Onslow Bay is a broad, shallow, high-energy shelf system bounded by the Cape Lookout and Frying Pan shoals. It is generally a sediment-starved shelf system dominated by hardbottoms with a scattered and discontinuous veneer of mobile Holocene sediments. Phosphate-rich beds of the Miocene Pungo River Formation crop out in a belt 150 km long and up to 50 km wide across the continental shelf in Onslow Bay, North Carolina. Previous research has demonstrated that a few of these beds contain vast quantities of potentially economic phosphate resources that occur in the surface and shallow subsurface sediments. Onslow Bay contains five phosphate-bearing beds predicted to include up to 20.7 billion tons of in-place phosphate concentrate with total sediment grades ranging up to 22.9% P2O5 and adjusted average concentrate grades of 29.8% P2O5. These phosphates are lithologically and chemically similar to phosphates currently being mined in the nearby Aurora phosphate district in North Carolina. Various lithologies of the Pungo River Formation and associated rock units of Oligocene and Quaternary age crop out on the sea floor to form extensive hardbottom habitats that dominate almost 100% of Onslow Bay. A large proportion of these hardbottoms appear to be sea floor deserts, whereas others are virtual oases with rich associations of benthic organisms. These important differences in benthic community structure appear to be greatly influenced by one or more of the following variables: 1) geologic framework (geologic formation, hardbottom composition, morphology, and spatial orientation relative to dominant currents and waves), 2) texture, movement, and accumulation of surface sediments, and 3) flow rates and chemical composition of discharged submarine groundwater.

A pilot mining robot, named MineRo-II, has been developed by KIOST during 2011-2012. The pilot scale was defined as 1/5 of the commercial mining capacity, 1.5 million dry-tons of nodules per year. The development purpose of MineRo-II is to use for the pilot mining test planned in 2015. MineRo-II was designed to be self-propelled by electric-hydraulic power and remotely operated in real-time from aboard. The main operational functions are crawling on seafloor, pick-up and crushing of nodules, discharging nodules out to buffer. Prior to MineRo-II, a test miner (MineRo-I) was developed in scale of 1/20th in 2007, and performed two times sea trials in 2009 and 2010. The results of performance tests were evaluated and utilized for the concept of MineRo-II. The design concept aimed at the expandability of the mining capacity based on modularity of configuration, maintenance simplicity and multiplicity of backup solution. The pilot-scale mining capacity is achieved by four pick-up modules of each 1m wide, which are moving forward with robot vehicle and sweep the nodules entering below the pick-up heads. Principally, by adding the pickup modules in lateral dimension the mining capacity may increase linearly. MineRo-II was designed and constructed in unit-module wise. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical and hydraulic configuration. The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

"INTRODUCTIONPolymetallic nodules from the Clarion and Clipperton Zone (CCZ) within the equatorial NE Pacific Ocean show high concentration of economic important strategic metals such as Ni, Cu, Co, Mo and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The content of those metals in nodules is depending on (i) the supply during individual growing periods, (ii) the environment conditions as well as (iii) on different manganese minerals, which occur in nodules. The incorporation of the metals can vary within the structure (incorporated into the structure / over vacancies of the structure) and this can be relevant for the further metallurgical treatment.Mineralogy of Mn-nodules from the CCZ and the incorporation of metalsManganese nodules consist of nm to µm thick layer growth structures (LGS) of different genetic origin (hydrogenetic/suboxic-diagenetic). Those LGS form due to the precipitation of Mn-and Fe-(oxy) hydroxide colloids from the oxygen rich near-bottom water and/or pore water (hydrogenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988) or from suboxic (depleted in O2 <5µmol O2/l; Hein and Koschinsky 2013)) near-bottom water/pore water (suboxicdiagenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988; Wegorzewski and Kuhn, 2014).In general, metals dissolved in seawater will be adsorbed and complexed on the oxide surfaces according to their different surface charge. The surface charge of the Mn-Fe (oxy) hydroxides depends on the pHzpc (zpc: zero point of charge). In seawater dissolved hydrated cations (Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+) are adsorbed preferentially on the negatively charged Mn-oxide (MnO2 -) surface (pHzpc 2.8). In contrast, negatively and neutrally charged complexes (e.g., Ti(OH4); REE(CO3)2 -, MoO4 2-) are adsorbed on the surface of Fe-oxy hydroxide colloids (FeOOH+) which have a slightly positively charged surface (pHzpc 8.5; Stumm and Morgan, 1981; Koschinsky and Halbach 1995)."

Submarine hydrothermal activity and mineralization related to island arc volcanism along the Tonga arc were explored during two research cruises in October 2009 (KODOS 09H) and February 2010 (KODOS 10H), respectively. In KODOS 09H cruise, geophysical survey, including multi-beam bathymetry, marine seismic and magnetic investigations, was performed on 10 volcanoes to find out possible structural discontinuity that can act as fluid pathway for formation of hydrothermal deposits at submarine caldera system. The result provided acoustic and seismic image maps and magnetic anomaly maps of targeted volcanoes. Then, detailed seafloor observation and sampling as well as deep tow side scan sonar survey were performed in KODOS 10H cruise on 5 volcanoes which are selected as targeted areas from the previous cruise. Among 5 targeted volcanoes, TA26 shows most extensive hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal vents and alteration zone were observed on western caldera and summit of eastern cone of the TA26. Although only weak hydrothermal alteration was observed on eastern cone, mineralized fragments of chimney and mound were sampled from western wall of central caldera on TA25 volcano. On TA12 volcano, strong hydrothermal plume and alteration zone was detected during video tows operated between SW scoria cone and small ridge. However, only small amount of hydrothermal altered rocks were collected from TA12. Although hydrothermal activity and mineralization might be formed, supported by plume detection and result of geophysical survey, only weak alteration zones were observed on other two volcanoes (TA19 and TA22). The exploration area generally show shallow depth up to several tens of meters on summit where subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluid might occur due to low hydraulic pressure, which can affect on styles of hydrothermal venting and mineralization process observed on Tonga submarine arc volcanoes.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where the southeast and northeast trade winds converge, is the effective climatological barrier that separates the southern and northern hemispheres in terms of dust budget. Asian and N. American dusts dominate in the Pacific north of the ITCZ, while Central and S. American dust prevails south of the ITCZ. In order to understand the nature of latitudinal and depth-related variations of mineral composition in terms of position relative to the ITCZ, deep-sea core sediments were collected from 9°N to 17°N at a 2° intervals along the 131.5°W meridian and analyzed for mineral composition. The amount of illite in surface sediments decreases gradually from 65% at 17°N to 31% at 9°N. In contrast, smectite increases from 11% to 56% southward. The observed mineralogical variation toward the ITCZ is attributed to the increased supply of volcaniclastic material transported via the southeast trade winds from the Central and South America source regions. Smectite-illite transition, a phenomenon that the amount of smectite increases over illite, occurs at around 10°N, the northern margin of the ITCZ. This result indicates that the change in latitudinal position of the ITCZ in the geological past could be recorded by the smectite-illite transition in deep-sea cores. The cores studied show down-core variation of mineral composition from illite-rich at the surface to a smectite-rich clay suit at depths, similar to the latitudinal variation. The smectite-illite transitions observed in these cores are likely the records of changes in latitudinal position of the ITCZ. The depth and age of the smectite-illite transition is getting shallower and younger towards the equator, implying that the ITCZ was located farther north during late Tertiary and has shifted southward to the present position of 5°N~10°N.

A new hydrothermal field with massive sulfide deposits was discovered in 2004 at 16º 38.4?N, 46º 28.5?W on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hydrothermal signals had already been recorded from bottom waters and sediments in this area during cruise 19 of R/V Professor Logatchev in 2000. This site was revisited during the 24th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev in February 2004 when samples of massive sulfides were recovered and video records of the deposits made. The basalt hosted hydrothermal field is situated at a depth of 3700-3750 m, 600 m above the inner floor on the eastern slope of the rift valley. Structurally, the new field is located at the intersection of a deep along-axis marginal fault and a transverse sub-latitudinal dislocation. Six sulfide mounds as well as associated metalliferous sediments were mapped (sampled and/or recorded by video profiling) within the hydrothermal site. The largest ore body, 500 x 225 m, in the southern part of the field consists of small blocky talus and relics of sulfide chimneys partly covered by iron oxyhydroxides. The chimneys are 1-5 m high. The southern and western boundaries of the massive sulfide deposit have not yet been delineated. More than 1,100 kg of massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization were sampled at 7 sites by dredge and TV-grab. Everywhere, iron sulfides were the principal minerals present. Pyrite in association with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite occurs in both massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization. Of particular interest is the chalcopyrite-siliceous stockwork where silicified and chalcopyritized basalts are intruded by a network of chalcopyrite veinlets. These zones could be fairly thick and enriched in base metals. Sphalerite was very rare.

Clark volcano is a large volcanic center on the active arc front of the intraoceanic Kermadec arc. It is one of the two southern-most Kermadec arc volcanoes (the other being Whakatane volcano) that sits on oceanic crust before the transition to continental New Zealand, and is underlain by the 17-km-thick Hikurangi Plateau, which is presently subducting beneath the southern section of the Kermadec arc. Unusual K-rich basaltic lavas have been recovered from Clark (1.5 to 2.25 wt.% K2O), together with more typical basaltic-andesite, andesite and dacite rocks. The total volume of the Clark volcanic center is ~90 km3, calculated from the summit of the volcano down to the 2,500 m contour (which marks the inflection point of the volcano flanks with the surrounding seafloor) and comprises two separate edifices similar in size; the northern one having a volume of ~4.57 km3 and the southern one 4.43 km3. The volcano has a maximum relief of ~1,645 m from the 2,500 m contour to the summit of the shallower northern edifice shoaling to 855 m below sea level. The northern edifice is comprised of twin peaks each consisting of a constructional cone, with evidence of sector collapse having occurred between the cones. A more recent, smaller cone again has grown on the eastern flank between these summit cones. Massive, blocky lavas and coarse talus dominate the summits of the cones, with finer-grained volcaniclastic material and sediments a feature of the volcano flanks. The southern edifice is noticeably more dissected than the northern one, having a pronounced horst in the centre of the volcano bounded by 5-6 km-long faults. There is no obvious constructional cone atop the southern volcanic edifice.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.
