"The binary Fe53Mo47 and ternary Fe54Mo30P16 coatings have been electrodeposited from citrate-based electrolyte on mild steel (MS) substrates. The electrodeposition has been conducted for 6 hours at 20 mA cm-2 and 30°C. The electrochemical tests were carried out in chlorate solutions containing 300 g L-1 NaCl and 4 g L-1 K2Cr2O7 at pH 6.4 and 80°C. A number of surface characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD and EMP were used to study the microstructure of the alloys. The electrocatalytic activity of these coatings was investigated using steady-state polarization and galvanostatic technique. This study revealed that the Fe-Mo-P coating could be considered as a promising cathode material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed an important decrease of hydrogen overpotential for Fe-Mo-P alloy as compared to that of Fe-Mo and especially MS which is a traditional cathode in chlorate industry. The HER overpotential for Fe54Mo30P16 at current density of 250 mA cm-2 was decreased by 30% in comparison to that of MS (1029 mV), and by 16.5% to that of Fe53Mo47 coating (857 mV).INTRODUCTIONSodium chlorate is used for manufacturing of several daily consumption products. This chemical is mainly employed for the production of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) that is a bleaching agent used in the pulp and paper industry. The ClO2 is also consumed for generation of perchlorates, chlorites and other chlorates, as an herbicide and in uranium processing (Cornell, 2002). Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

"Introduction This paper will discuss the current operations of Westar Mining Ltd. and give a brief history of the company and of the Crowsnest Pass area. Westar is an integrated company involved in mining, processing and marketing coal from its mines in southeastern British Columbia and shipping coal from Westshore Terminals at Roberts Bank, located just south of Vancouver, B.C. It is two-thirds owned by the B.C. Resources Investment Corporation and one-third owned by the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and a consortium of Japanese coal consumers. Operations in southeast British Columbia consist of four coal mines and two processing facilities (Fig. 1). The Elkview Coal Processing Plant near Sparwood, B.C. receives its raw coal from Balmer operations (Harmer open pit), Balmer South (Panel 6) an underground hydraulic mine, and Balmer North an underground room-and-pillar mine. The fourth mine, Greenhills, an open-pit operation, is located near Elkford, B.C. and has its own processing plant. The Balmer mining and processing complex is the largest metallurgical coal facility in Canada producing up to 7 .5 million tonnes of clean coal per year. The Greenhills operation, completed in mid-1983, has a capacity of 2.8 million tonnes. The high-grade metallurgical and thermal coal produced is primarily for export markets. The major customers are Japan, Korea, Brazil, Pakistan, Chile and Taiwan.Our coal and that produced by other mines in Alberta and British Columbia is shipped to the international markets through Westshore Terminals Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary. Westshore will have an annual capacity of 22 million tonnes of coal and accommodate ships of up to 250,000 dead weight tonnes by 1984 when its current expansion program is completed."

Increasing depths of mining coupled with the mechanization of most underground mining operations have led to growing complexities in the mine environments with the production of large amounts of gaseous and particulate contaminants. Over 100,000 lives have been lost due methane gas and dust explosions in coal mine workings in both the US and Canada since 1900 when the methane concentrations exceeded stipulated levels in some workings. There is therefore the need to constantly assess and evaluate the performance of the existing mine ventilation systems to maintain safe and acceptable mine environmental conditions in workings to meet the requirements of federal, state or provincial laws. This paper uses the results of continuous monitoring of methane concentrations conducted in selected development headings in coal mines in North America to assess the effectiveness of existing auxiliary ventilation systems in the control of methane gas concentrations in the headings. The results show that the average quantities of fresh air required to dilute, disperse and remove methane concentrations within set levels of one minute varied from 5.43 m3/s in Heading #11 (Condition 2) to 27.97 m3/s in Heading #10 (Condition 1) and this represented about 12 to 26% of the quantities required to dilute methane concentrations to safe levels within one minute under Condition 1 and 32 to 139% under Condition 2. The average dilution times in the headings studied were less than 8 minutes. The forcing efficiencies of the auxiliary systems in the headings studied ranged from poor to excellent implying that the auxiliary ventilation systems were capable of controlling the methane concentrations below statutory levels but may not be able to cope with large and unusual methane concentrations in the headings. This study is important to prevent methane gas and coal dust explosions in coal mines and thus avoid any loss of lives and property.

The Yayoi period, from about 300 B.C. to A.O. 300, represents a time of important changes in Japanese history. During this period the advanced rice culture of the Asian continent was introduced to Japan, along with the techniques of animal husbandry, spinning, bronze casting and metal working(1) . As was the case in the Jomon period (11000 B.C. to 300 B.C.), the Yayoi period is traditionally defined by a particular type of pottery, characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and an extreme simplicity of decoration and form(2) . Pieces of this pottery were found in 1884 in a district of Tokyo, known as Yayoi-Cho, not far from Tokyo University. Within a decade the name Yayoi had come to be used for the period which also saw the first casting of metals in Japan121. During the Yayoi period, the foundation of the ancient Japanese state was laid as the individual small communities were unified and as labour specialization and social levels developed. In fact, the Yayoi may be the true ancestral culture of Japan(3) . However, the origin of the Yayoi is not definitely known. One theory indicates that the Yayoi people may have been driven from the Asian mainland (via Korea) by the dynastic wars that accompanied the unification of China under the Ch'in and Han and that these settlers rapidly displaced the Jomon. Bronze objects and the cultivation of rice may have arrived about the same time - in the third century B.C. Iron was in Japan within another century, but since it rusts badly and disintegrates, only a few small pieces are known from such an early date(4) . After about 50 B.C., the Yayoi cultures of western Japan were in fairly close and regular contact with the continent via Korea(5)

"Proterozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks in the Franklin Mountains, west Texas, exhibit similar values in average concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU), equivalent thorium (eTh) and equivalent potassium (eK) when compared to Proterozoic igneous rocks of the southwestern United States. Variations of radioelement concentrations for all Proterozoic igneous rocks of the Franklin Mountains range from 1.1 to 357.1 ppm U, 2.1to 259.1 ppm Th and 2.5 to 10.2% K.Recent geologic mapping of the Proterozoic rocks in the Franklin Mountains revealed several types of granites previously unrecognized, and these warrant further exploration for U and Th resources. Fluorite-bearing granites and riebeckite pegmatites are likely targets for further investigation, as these have the highest U and Th concentrations compared to all other granites.IntroductionThis is a summary of the paper presented at the CIM Geology Division Uranium Symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, September 8-13, 1981. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in Proterozoic igneous rocks in the Franklin Mountains, and compare radioelement concentrations to Proterozoic igneous rocks elsewhere in the southwestern United States.General GeologyThe Franklin Mountains are located in west Texas and southcentral New Mexico, within the southeastern part of the Basin and Range Province o f the southwestern United States. The Franklins are a complex fault-block range trending northsouth with strata dipping toward the west. Ages of the rocks range from Proterozoic to Cretaceous. Harbour (1972, 1960) provides the most recent account of the general geology of the Franklin Mountains. Most recent accounts of the detailed Pro Proterozoic geology o f the Franklins are provided by Hoffer (1976), Thomann (1980, 1981), Pyron (1980), Ray (1982) and McCutcheon (1982)."

"Highly variable and higher than forecast lead miff feed grades were problems experienced at the Polaris Concentrator. Limited flotation capacity and poor operating flexibility prevented the plant operators from overcoming these difficulties, and resulted in grades and recoveries which were lower than necessary.Two column cells were integrated into the lead circuit in an effort to give the operators the tools they required to achieve the best grades and recoveries possible, regardless of the miff feed grade. Installation of the column cells increased lead concentrate grade from 76% to 79.3% Pb, and increased lead recovery from 9/% to 91.3% Pb.This paper reviews the design, development and operation of column flotation cells in the lead circuit at the Polaris Mine.IntroductionThe Polaris Concentrator was constructed in 1980 on a barge in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, and towed to its pre sent location on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, about 1450 km from the North Pole. The plant presently treat s about 2800 mtpd of new feed with average feed grades of 3010 Pb, 13% Zn and 5% Fe. Current production averages 36 000 tonnes of lead concentrate and 220 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually.The barge design and min e location dictated that the concentrator .be compact with very little unused floor space. As a result, flexibility was limited in terms of expanding the plant.Mill feed grades were highly variable and above forecast and the lead flotation circuit was found to be under capacity. This caused continued overloads in the lead cleaning circuit, resulting in low concentrate grades and recoveries. It was evident that an increase in lead flotation capacity and flexibility was necessary. The existing floor space did not allow for the installation of additional conventional flotation cells, but one alternative was the installation of column cells."

Magnesium alloy AM50 is of interest to automotive cradle application because of it excellent castability and good ductility. In this work, microstructure and mechanical properties of both low pressure die cast (LPDC) and high pressure die cast (HPDC) AM50 test bars are characterized. Microstructure was examined using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Phase identifications were performed using energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS) and TEM diffraction. It has been found that LPDC produces much coarser microstructure than HPDC. At the same time, the HPDC samples are more heterogeneous in microstructure and composition close to grain boundaries. Particles with various dimensions and morphologies of two different intermetallic phases, Mg17A112 and A18Mn5, were found in all the samples. Mechanical tests were performed under conditions similar to those related to an engine cradle application. LPDC samples show lower strength but better creep resistance than HPDC mainly due to the difference in grain sizes and grain boundary microstructure between LPDC and HPDC. Creep curves are well described by the empirical Andrade equation. Tensile-compressive yield and creep asymmetries were found in AM50, i.e. better deformation resistance in tension than in compression. The average yield asymmetry ratio for all the samples is 0.87. Microstructural examinations on the samples tested in tension, compression and creep showed that the deformation mechanisms in AM50 were slip plus twining at temperatures up to 125°C. The examinations indicate the important role of twining in the asymmetry phenomenon. The creep results indicate that dynamic precipitation of the Mg17A112 phase during testing is not the mechanism directly responsible for the creep asymmetry in AM50.

"IntroductionDevelopments in the preparation, hydraulic transportation and placement of classified mill tailing as an effective backfill and support for mining excavations, have made feasible several advancements in mining methods that are safer and more economical. Hydraulic backfill systems have played an integral part in the development of more efficient cut-and-fill and blasthole stoping.The hydraulic transportation of tailing fill has made possible the elimination of expensive and laborious transportation, placement and spreading of gravel type fills. Also, in cut-andfill stopes, the use of hydraulically placed consolidated fill has largely eliminated the need to use extensive timbering for floors and supports, previously necessary when only gravel type, waste rock or unconsolidated tailing fill was used .Another important advantage of using mill tailing as backfill is that it decreases the need to contain a large portion of the mill solids waste in a surface disposal area and thus reduces environmental and ecological problems.Tailing Fill PropertiesConsolidated tailing fill consists of deslimed mill tailing and Portland cement. These two materials are mixed together in various proportions to form a high density slurry which is transferred underground by gravity through boreholes and pipelines. After placement underground, the water is drained off and the mixture is allowed to set. The strength of the consolidated fill is dependent on the cement content, particle size distribution and curing time. A typical tailing/ cement ratio used for bulk filling in stopes requiring vertical wall support is 30:1. Ratios ranging from 8:1 to 5: 1 are used for stope floors. High pulp densities minimize segregation and loss of cement during placement as well as reduce the amount of drainage water to be handled."

THE Pinchi Lake mercury belt is in central British Columbia, about fifty miles north of the Prince Rupert branch of the Canadian National railway (Figure 1). Until 1936 little was known about the geology of this area. Jn 19~6 and 1937, J. G. Gray and the writer mapped the Fort Fraser area (G.S.C. maps 630A and 631A) for the Geological Survey of Canada. During the field season of 1937, cinnabar was discovered by J. G. Gray in the Permian limestones on the north shore of Pinchi lake on what have since proved to be the main showings of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine. Claims were staked in the spring of 1938 and later that year were optioned to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. Development work revealed cinnabar deposits of commercial size and grade, and a small reduction plant was erected, production of mercury commencing in June, 1940. Since 1940, this plant has been enlarged by additional units. The ore treated is reported to contain between 0.5 and 0.75 per cent mercury. The production of mercury from this deposit is now far in excess of Canadian requirements and this country is able to supply the United Kingdom with part of its needs. In 1940 and 1941, several other occurrences of cinnabar were found northwest of Pinchi lake. During 1941, the writer made a geological investigation of the known cinnabar occurrences and of the belt of country in which they are located. The present paper summarizes the results of this work. The writer is indebted to officials of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, and to Mr. E. Bronlund of the Pinchi Lake mine in particular, for their generous co-operation in the work.

Abstract - The Vazante Mine is located in the Vazante District, the largest zinc district in Brazil. The Vazante deposit consists dominantly of an unusual willemitic ore. Small sulfide bodies are tectonically imbricated with the willemitic ore, within the Vazante shear zone. Structural styles of deformation and petrographic and isotopic evidence indicate that willemitic mineralization and deformation occurred synchronously during the Neo-Proterozoic. Various generations of hydrothermal veins and hydraulic breccias may pre-date, accompany and overprint the mineralization. Ore-formation temperatures are deduced from stable isotope geothermometry and mineral chemistry of both sulfide bodies and willemitic ore. Temperatures during the main stage of mineralization range from 206°C to 294°C (willemitic ore) and 317°C (sulfides), and reflect the prevailing metamorphic conditions within the shear zone. The fluid from which the gangue minerals of the sulfide bodies precipitated (at 250°C) had an oxygen isotopic average value of ?18O = +19.4‰. This value appears to reflect the interaction of metamorphic fluid with the carbonate rocks of the Vazante formation. At 250°C, the fluid in equilibrium with the vein mineral phases and willemitic ore assemblage exhibits a uniform oxygen isotopic composition, with an average value of ?18O = +11.5‰. The positive linear covariance of ?18O and ?13C ratios of the carbonates is most likely due to the mixing of metamorphic and meteoric fluids. The ?34S values of sulfides indicate a direct crustal origin for the sulfur. It is suggested that the sulfur is largely derived from pre-existing sulfide bodies and has been transported by metamorphic fluids. The willemitic ore may have originated from the precipitation of metal in sulfur- poor fluids under oxidized conditions, within the Vazante shear zone.

Introduction In presenting this paper the author wishes to state that the opinions here given represent only his personal views. A general survey of the subject has been attempted, but such deductions as may have been drawn are not necessarily endorsed by the Company with which he is associated. The aeroplane as an instrument of transport is yet a novelty, for it is only twenty-five years since man first flew. This statement, by itself, may be very deceptive, for compared with the steam locomotive or even the auto-mobile, this infant in industry has made some remarkable showings. The 'actual performance' speed-curve of aircraft plotted over a ten-year period is rising faster than the 'expectancy' speed-curve of 1924 indicated, and it should be noted that, today, the possibilities of 600 miles per hour provoke less scepticism than did the prophecies of 400 miles per hour only a decade ago. Commencing with the remarkable achievement of raising one man into the air, aircraft with an all-up weight of 14 tons are now in daily use on the British airways, and recently a non-stop flight of 5,340 miles was accomplished in an aeroplane, without refuelling. More true than ever is the statement that the records of yesterday are commonplace tomorrow, for new ideas are today seized on and exploited to the utmost once the period of scepticism and doubt has been overcome. In fact, so many new ideas have been brought forward, during the past few years, and applied successfully in our economic life, that one may well ask if today we are not a little too impatient, too exacting in demands, forgetting that real worth-while progress -is attained by no short-cuts.

"Increasing energy costs in mineral processing is making it necessary for tighter controls over various parts of the concentrating process. Continuous monitoring and control of critical process streams can be easily performed by today's many computer systems. Indeed, the list of successful applications of computers to grinding and flotation control continues to grow. The day is rapidly approaching when the use of computers within concentrators for either process control or simply metallurgical accounting will no longer be a luxury, but a necessity. The benefits from such applications far out weight the initial investment.This paper describes the current application of a process control system at Brunswick Mining in north-eastern New Brunswick. Emphasis is placed on the control of a CuPb flotation circuit, and the benefits derived-from this control.No. 12 Cu-Pb Flotation: The complex nature of the Brunswick flotation process has been described else-where. 1,2,3 Four final concentrates are eventually produced, these being a Zn concentrate assaying 53% Zn, a 30% Pb concentrate, a 20% Cu concentrate, and a bulk Pb Zn concentrate assaying 35% Zn and 17% Pb. The Cu concentate, Pb concentrate, and bulk Pb Zn concentrate are all derived from a primary CuPb concentrate assaying 26% Pb, 11% Zn and 1.8% Cu.The No. 12 CuPb circuit produces approximately two thirds of the total primary CuPb concentrate. No. 12 ore, assaying 3.5% Pb, 9% Zn, 0.25% Cu and 100 g/tne silver, is ground in two parallel grinding circuits. Each line uses a 3.2 x 4.2 meter rod mill in closed circuit with two parallel 3.2 x 3.9 meter ball mills. Ball mill and rod mill discharges are classified in two stages of cycloning. The secondary cyclone overflow, or flotation feed, is controlled at 65% passing 37 microns."

"History of Tara Mines Ltd.Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. was formed in Canada by Irishmen in 1953. The discovery of an orebody approximately six miles from the historically famous Hill of Tara in County Meath was a wild dream . Nevertheless this dream became a reality. Tara Mines Ltd. was formed, and the mine developed some 35 miles northwest of the City of Dublin in the Irish Republic.Tara's original drilling program indicated a zinc-lead orebody of approximately 60 million tonnes grading at 10.1% Zn and 2.6% Pb. The terms of the mining lease stipulated that the Irish government would acquire 25% equity interest in the operation. The mine was thus owned 75% by Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. of which the principal shareholders were Noranda and Northgate, together with 25% being held by the Irish government. The mine was purchased in March 1986 by Outokumpu Oy, a Finnish mining and metallurgical company, and together with the 25% government stake are the current owners. Outokumpu Analysis on Tara Mines Ltd.Upon ownership Outokumpu carried out a comprehensive analysis on the operation and came to the following conclusions :1. Tara had a good orebody;2. Tara had a skilled, capable, stable workforce;3. Tara's concentrator and processing equipment was adequate to meet requirements;4. Tara's mobile equipment fleet was too old and too numerousin numbers; and5. Tara had too many employees, both staff and hourly paid .With ore reserves of approximately 50 million tonnes and at a planned extraction rate of 2.6 million tonnes it meant that the mine had a lifespan of approximately 20 years. To be a viable operation into the future, the mine had to become more efficient. Operating costs and manpower levels had to be dramatically reduced."

"Syncrude has entered a new era involving the use of pipeline slurries to convey oil sand to the extraction plant. Hydrotransport operations and base plant operations encounter vast performance differences when processing different types of oil sand. This paper describes the hydrotransport process, its history at Syncrude, methods of describing the source ore characteristic and plant performance. The use of this information within Syncrude and how it will be managed on an ongoing basis will also be described. IntroductionThe Syncrude Canada Ltd. site is located 43 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, on the Athabasca oil sand deposit. The Syncrude operation consists of mining, extraction, upgrading, utilities and other support facilities. The mined ore is sent to the extraction plant where water and solids are removed from the bitumen. The bitumen is then sent to the upgrading plants to be further processed into Syncrude Sweet Blend (a light sweet crude oil). Syncrude produced 73.5 Mbbls of Syncrude Sweet Blend in 1996 and produced 75.7 Mbbls in 1997. Prior to 1993, Syncrude moved ore from the pit to the extraction plant via four dragline / bucketwheel/ conveyor systems. These systems, supplemented by auxiliary ore crushers, satisfied the feed requirements of the extraction plant. Ore was conveyed to the control tower area and placed in the dump pocket via four radial stackers. Various blending scenarios occurred at this point, using feed from the four mining quadrants and from auxiliary feed crushers. Upon entering the extraction plant from the base mine, the oil sand passed through a series of tumblers where it was mixed with hot water and caustic. It then proceeded to one of four primary separation vessels where bitumen froth was floated off and the middlings and coarse fractions were recombined and sent to the tail oil recovery vessels, or TORs, for further processing."

"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. "SummaryThis paper is presented as part of a programme to show the steps taken by industry and others interested in supplying a solid fuel of constant quality to 'satisfy a consuming market. The paper deals with the general principles underlying quality control in coal preparation plants, namely, constant quality and close adherance to acceptance limits. It also describes how control of ash content is ""generally hampered by the problem of coal sampling .and the long duration of the ash analysis and how these difficulties may be overcome.Quality control can be effected in several ways. Thorough blending wll reduce variations appreciably, except those of long trend. The latter can be detected by automatic sampling and quick ash analysis. At present, under favourable conditions, a system of half-hourly ash determinations with an accuracy of 0.5 to 1.0 per cent can be realized, to the effect that trends with a 'wave length' of more than two hours cu be eliminated within the limits of accuracy of the ash figures. The general solution of the problem is a combination of blending, accurate sampling, quick ash determination, and statistical analysis of the pattern of ash distribution.The use of statistical methods of analysis, such as the t test and F test, is •discussed at some length in order to emphasize the importance of the correct evaluation of observational data if there is to be confidence in the validity of test results.General ConsiderationsCOAL, as a fuel, is too cheap for a long haul across the country. "Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. "Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. Abstract - The Okinawa trough is an active back-arc-spreading center in which submarine hydrothermal exhalation (black chimneys) and sulfide mineralization are forming. Fluid inclusion composition in minerals of the hydrothermal feeder zones in the JADE field shows that the hydrothermal systems are extremely gas-rich. There are two independent and co-existing fluids, CO2-hydrocarbon and saline fluids. Microthermometry and Laser Raman Microprobe (LRM) analyses on individual fluid inclusions of the CO2-hydrocarbon type, dominated by CO2 and containing minor CH4, C2H4, C2H6, N2 and H2S, are almost equivalent to the fluid inclusion composition of a natural gas field. The saline fluid is mainly composed of H2O and contains minor Na+ and K+. It is close to a H2O-NaCl, or H2O-NaCl-KCl system, with salinities from 3.7% to 7.5% NaCl eq. Before venting on the seafloor, the fluids experienced immiscible separation. One of the end-member fluids is downward circulating seawater that interacted with sub-seafloor rocks. The other was gas (volatile)-rich fluid derived from a shallow magma chamber. The immiscibility separation of fluids resulted from the decrease of temperature and pressure of the hydrothermal system and continuous input of magmatic volatiles. The saline fluids in this system are discharging to form sulfide chimneys and black smoke. Meanwhile, CO2-rich fluid discharges as CO2 bubbles through hydrate pipes. A large amount of CO2-CH4-H2S gas or fluid in the upper part of the hydrothermal system, and reaction of this gas or fluid with saline fluids, finally enables the accumulation of metal sulfides.
