Trend surface analysis was used to investigate the geochemical dispersion patterns of Si, Ai, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ti and Rb in the footwall of the Seneca massive sulphide prospect in southwestern British Columbia. Surfaces for various element ratios were also produced to see if the distributions of the elements are related to each other. Trends developed by the elements redistributed during hydrothermal alteration may be difficult to detect for various reasons, such as too few and widely separated sample points, random analytical errors or local variations in rock chemical composition that are not related to regional trends. Trend surface analysis is useful to distinguish regional trends from local fluctuations. The computer program used in this study is capable of calculating surfaces up to the 6th degree polynomial, but provides for automatic termination when the variables in the equation for successive surfaces become effectively collinear. With the relatively small number of data points used (21 samples) in this study, such termination occurred after the quadratic surface. Results show that, at the Seneca prospect, Mg and K increase, and Na and Ca decrease, toward a common centre which corresponds closely with the best drill-core intersections of ore. The centre is interpreted as a volcanic vent and as the source of mineralization . Quadratic surfaces for element ratios show that K/Ca decreases and Fe/Mg increases away from this vent. Thin-section and X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that these variations reflect sericitization of plagioclase and an increase in the Mg content of chlorite near the vent. The mineralization , rock types and element dispersion patterns at the Seneca prospect are similar to those reported for volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits at Bathurst, New Brunswick, and in the Hokuroko district of Japan.

"Atikokan is 200 km west of Thunder Bay and earned its mining fame from the discovery of the Steep Rock Iron Range in the late 1930s. Gold, however, was discovered in the Atikokan and Mine Centre areas in the late 1800s and eventually led to one of Ontario's first gold camps, and a total production of approximately 52,000 oz of gold and 174,000 oz of silver from 218,000 tons milled.The general geology of the area consists of Early Precambrian rocks of the Wabigoon and Quetico subprovinces, separated by the east-trending Quetico Fault. The Wabigoon Subprovince, to the north, consists of metavolcanics, minor metasediments and granitic batholiths. The Quetico Subprovince consists of metasediments and granitoids. Small ultramafic plutons occur throughout the metasediments.Within a 50-km radius of Atikokan, more than 50 gold occurrences, prospects and past producers have been discovered since the 18oos. The Atikokan Gold Study performed by the Ontario Geological Sur vey (Wilkinson, 1980, 1982) defined three types of gold mineralization in which gold is concentrated in quartz and quartz-carbonate veins:I) Metavolcanic-Hosted, Stratabound Type-associated with altered felsic fragmental units and chemical sedimentary rocks; possible gold mineralization source rocks. The mineralization is due to metamorphogenic (epigenetic) enrichment. Associated with dynamic metamorphism events and/or felsic intrusive events.2) Marmion Lake Batholith Type-occurs within the gneissic core of the batholith associated with north east-trending lineaments, representing faults or shear zones. Mineralized veins are related to several periods of deformation and shearing, suggesting that metamorphogenic veins were produced during dynamic metamorphism.3) Contact Zone Type -occurs in the contact zone rocks between gneissic batholiths and meta volcanic belts. Hydrothermal solutions produced during several deformational periods acted to leach and concentrate gold mineralization. Localized, discontinuous shear zones host the epigenetic (metamorphogenic) veins.Twenty-one properties in the area were mapped and sampled, and researched petrographically and geochemically. Geological data from the Atikokan Economic Geologist Program of the Ontario Geological Survey are used in discussing the types of mineralization, genetic models, and exploration targets and techiques."

Abstract - Natural gamma ray well logging, an effective tool in geophysical prospecting, is used to investigate the radioactive and phosphatic layers in the Khneifiss mine in Syria. The interpretation of the gamma ray measurements, using numerical methods of analysis developed previously and applied successfully in some phosphatic areas in Syria, make it possible to define precisely the phosphate thickness from place to place in the study area. This technique has been successfully applied while studying seven boreholes in the area. Sixty-three core samples from phosphatic layers in the boreholes have been analyzed, using gamma ray spectrometry for the determination of P2O5 , U, Th, and K. Good correlation between P2O5 content and U concentration has been found. The total count gamma logs correlate reasonably well with the U core analysis, suggesting that radioactive equilibrium exists in the U decay series. These gamma logs can be therefore used effectively to quantitatively map the distribution of P2O5 and U. The characteristics of both subsurface phosphatic sand and phosphatic rocks have been investigated and outlined using a statistical approach. The affinity of uranium to some trace elements such as V, Sr, Cu, and Ni has been verified using correlation matrices of these elements.

"Certain environmental problems can substantially alter the physical properties of the subsurface. In such cases, geophysical methods can be used to map the distribution of subsurface contamination or buried wastes prior to drilling or sampling. For example, inorganic contamination by acids, bases, salts, or metallic ions can be detected by instruments that measure ground conductivity; metallic objects such as buried drums, pipelines, etc. can be located by magnetic survey, and radioactive mine waste can be mapped by radiometric techniques. Geophysical methods can also be used to characterize site geology. If carried out prior to development, they can assist in identifying areas of high- and low permeability and sources of natural contamination. The methods can also be used to establish baseline values and to locate stable areas for development of environmentally sensitive facilities. Application of geophysical methods to environmental problems is illustrated with examples from base-metal mines, uranium operations, and potash and oil-sands operations. Particular attention is given to the problem of acid mine drainage. =IntroductionGeophysical methods have been used for many years by the mining industry in exploration and geotechnical investigations. The basic techniques for mapping variations in physical properties of the subsurface have been adapted to meet the special needs of resource exploration and development in the coal, potash , oil sands, industrial minerals, precious metals, and base-metal industries. Now the mining industry is facing another challenge: to operate the mining cycle, from discovery to closure, with minimum impact on the environment. This involves the rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites, the minimization and effective containment of pollutants at operating and developing sites, and the longterm containment and monitoring of sites after mine closures.Some of the most difficult aspects of environmental control and monitoring relate to the location of buried waste and contaminated fluids in the subsurface. As in the search for buried ore deposits or in geotechnical investigations, geophysics can be a valuable aid in subsur face environmental investigations. Investigations can be remedial , involving the location or monitoring of existing problems, or preventative, where problem areas are identified or background values are established before site development. In either case, geophysical methods should not be considered as a substitute for drilling. Geophysical interpretations in general do not provide the detail required for a complete environmental or geotechnical investigation. They are most useful as rapid reconnaissance methods for targeting subsequent drilling or for interpreting subsurface condit ions away from drill holes. "World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

"Factors affecting the extraction of gold are of a mineralogical nature. Knowledge of the mineralogy of the ore or metallurgical product to be treated, if appropriately combined with the metallurgical test work, may improve gold recoveries. .This paper outlines the mineralogical techniques f or the study of gold ores and metallurgical products and describes the gold mineralogy in relation to its metallurgy. An effective plan for studying refractory and other difficult ores, combining metallurgical test work, chemical analysis and mineralogy and capable of giving positive results over relatively short periods of time, is suggested.IntroductionFactors affecting gold recoveries are of a mineralogical nature and include (i) the gold-bearing minerals, (ii) their grain size and, particularly where the grain size is very fine (10 microns in diameter and less), (iii) their host minerals and (iv) the association these form with the gold-bearing minerals.Mineralogical studies of gold ores and metallurgical products containing gold in economic amounts (today down to 1/10 of one ounce per tonne or 2.84 ppm) are difficult and time consuming. Mostly because of such reason, metallurgical testing (test work) is usually done simply by trial and error without understanding the causes for failure or success.Mineralogical studies, if appropriately conducted and combined with the test work, provide an efficient mean s of improving recoveries through the understanding of gold losses derived from the use of the wrong technique for separation. The information they provide is therefore the first step in the development of recovery techniques, for those ores where the test work alone failed to produce positive results."

"An acidic chloride leach solution was generated from the treatment of an ore containing the following value elements: silver, gold, indium, gallium, copper, zinc and lead. Iron was also co-extracted into solution as a ferric chloride species. Iron extraction was a significant component of the overall acid consumption of the leaching process. The recovery of iron by solvent extraction and water stripping was investigated. Tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP) was very effective at recovering iron from the leachate. The water strip solution could be decomposed to produce ferric oxide (hematite) and hydrochloric acid for recycle via hydrothermal hydrolysis or pyrohydrolysis.INTRODUCTION The Malku Khota deposit is situated in the eastern part of the Bolivian Altiplano at elevations between approximately 3,800 and 4,580 meters above sea level (Figure 1). "This paper describes major technical developments in rod mill design and operating practice since its introduction into the North American minerals industry over fifty years ago. The basic operating characteristics of the wet, overflow rod mill are described, and significant operating variables are reviewed in terms of their effects on mill power draw, power efficiency, and practical aspects of circuit operation. Key factors for improving the economic performance of rod milling circuits are identified. IntroductionThis paper summarizes the findings of a detailed review of available technical information on the operation of rod mills. One of the basic problems in historical comminution testwork has been the lack of a standard measure of circuit performance. The Bond Operating Work Index, not introduced until after 1950, has proven of immeasurable value in this regard, but first has to be carefully considered in terms of its utility and limitations. Its prescribed use is described in a later section of this paper.During this review, it became apparent that rod mill performance is generally not well understood. Because of combined interactions, the effects of different operating variables may be difficult to assess, and even at times appear erratic. It is obviously difficult to rationalize plant testwork or circuit adjustments when the results are highly unpredictable. The purposes of this review, therefore, were:a) to establish what basic facts have been learned about rod mill performance;b) to define some genera l guidelines for efficient rod mill design and operation; and,c) to establish a basis for specific recommendations for plant tests or adjustments with minimum risk, and maximum potential for circuit performance improvement."

"Les avantages de l'électricitéLe thème de la réunion 1982 de l'ICM District No. 2: "" Le défi des années 80 pour l'industrie minière de la Côte-Nord"" exprime trè s bien la réalité . En effet, la récession économique qui touche présentement tout le monde industrialisé, frappe de façon particulièrement sévère le marché du fer et de l'acier. Il est donc primordial pour les industries minières de la CôteNord de minimiser leurs coûts de production. Comme on sait, une bonne part des coûts de production est directement reliée à la consommation d'énergie.Si on retourne en arrière de quelques années, les prix des produits pétroliers étaient beaucoup moins élevé s que maintenant . Par exemple: A Philadelphie, en janvier 1930, le prix de l'huile no. 6 (bunker C) était de 1.22$ le baril. En 1940, le prix mondial du pétrole brut se situait aux environs de 1.80$ le baril et augmentait très lentement jusqu'en 1973. A la mi-octobre 1973, l'organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (O.P.E.P.) surprend le reste du monde en annonçant que le prix du brut grimpe à S.12$ le baril. .. on connaît la suite.On sait qu'au point de vue énergétique, le nord du Québec est l'une des régions les plus avantagées au monde. Malgré le fait que notre climat soit plutôt défavorable, nous sommes assurés d'une alimentation électrique à toute fin pratique éternelle, contrairement aux autres régions du globe. En effet, l' hydro-électricité ne représente que 2.S070 de toute l'électricité produite dans le monde.Une bonne partie de l'énergie consommée dans les industries minières de la Côte-Nord est utilisée pour produire la vapeur. Or, il y a plusieurs avantages à produire de la vapeur à partir de l'électricité:1. Le prix d'achat d'une chaudière électrique peut être moins de la moitié de celui d'une chaudière à carburant fo ssile.2. Le prix de l'électricité est plus bas que celu i des autres sources d'énergie disponibles dans notre région.3. Hydro-Québec offre un programme spéci al de subventions et un prix garanti de l'électricité, inférieur de 10070 à celui de tout autre combustible (1982).4. Souvent il est possible d'utiliser l'énergie hors pointe à un coût minime.S. L'espace requis pour un chaudière électrique est beaucoup moindre. Par exemple: une chaudière d'une capacité de 120000 Ibs/hre ne demande que SO pi? de plancher, c'est-à-dire un cercle de 8 pieds de diamètre comparativement à environ 600 à 700 pi2 pour une chaudière au ma zout.6. Aucun espace n'est requis pour l'entreposage du carburant.7. Aucun espace n'est requis pour la cheminée.8. Il n' y a que très peu de pièce s mécaniques, donc ces chaudières demandent très peu d 'entretien .9. Les chaudières électriques ne génèrent aucune pollution, donc on n'a pas besoin d'équipement coûteux de contrôle de la pollution.10. Ces chaudières sont extrêmement rapides. En effet, on peut passer de zéro à la production maximum en moins d'une heure si la chaudière est froide et en quelques secondes seulement si la chaudière est à sa température d'opération.11. L'efficacité de ces appareils est au moins de 9S% par rapport à 80-8S% pour les chaudières au ma zout. De plus, cette efficacité demeure la même quel que soit le niveau de production de la chaudière. Il faut faire attention ici: les manufacturiers proposent des rendements de 99% et plus, mais ceci ne tient compte que des pertes de chaleur à travers l'enveloppe, et de l'énergie nécessaire au fonctionnement de la pompe de circulation. Il faut ajouter à cela l'énergie perdue à cause de la vidange qui varie selon le type de chaudière et selon la qualité de l'eau d'alimentation.12. Ajoutons simplement que ces appareils sont très facile à opérer du fait qu'il n'y a aucun système complexe à manipuler.Cependant, il y a un inconvénient non négligeable à utiliser l'électricité comme source d'énergie: comme on ne peut pas emmagasiner l'énergie électrique, nous sommes à la merci du fournisseur."

In order to recover minerals by flotation, the sub-processes of collector adsorption onto the valuable minerals followed by bubble-particle attachment should occur efficiently. This paper investigates both of these sub-processes for various thiol collectors and their mixtures onto base metal sulfide minerals. The aim of the work was to investigate whether there is a correlation between the strength of the collector interaction with the mineral and the subsequent bubble-particle attachment. The collector-mineral affinity was measured experimentally using an isothermal titration calorimeter in order to determine the molar enthalpy of adsorption for each collector-mineral system. The bubble-particle attachment was measured using a microflotation device which essentially determines the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) and sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) and mixtures thereof were used as collectors with either single minerals or binary mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite, respectively. The adsorption enthalpies of the collectors were interpreted with reference to the chemical structure of the collector molecule and showed that the greater the positive inductive effect of the collector, which may be qualitatively related to their pKa, the greater their affinity for the mineral surface. In the microflotation studies, recoveries were strongly related to the alkyl chain length but there was no correlation between the enthalpies of adsorption and the flotation recoveries. When mixtures of collectors were used there was clear evidence of synergistic effects and in the case of DTC/xanthate mixtures it is possible that this synergism is related to a DTC promoted oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen. When mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite were used the flotation recovery and enthalpy of adsorption of SEX onto the individual pyrite particles in the mixture increased substantially compared to the case of pyrite alone. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret these important observations.

There is an increasing awareness on an international level of the potential for utilizing many wastes and by-products as construction materials. This has resulted in recent major reviews by OECD and RILEM to supplement national activities by agencies such as CANMET, USBM, BRE and LCPC. Much of this international and national work was reported during an International Conference on the use of by-products and wastes in civil engineering held in November 1978 in Paris. Based on participation in the OECD and RILEM reviews, and the Paris conference, developments in waste and byproduct utilization of particular concern to Canada are described. The major technical and economic constraints involved are also reviewed, so that the over-all evaluation reflects important factors such as inherent variability and transport logistics. Areas requiring further research and development are also identified. Particular emphasis is placed on slags, salvaged asphaltic concrete and surplus sulphur. "Due to the rapid development of China's industry, more than a hundred million tons of industrial wastes are generated annually, which occupy lots of land for storing, bring about environmental pollution, obstruct industrial and agricultural production and cause harm to people 's living. Therefore we must utilize them effectively to create wealth for our country. "

"This paper presents the statistical analyses of several sets of data acquired in several programs of sampling of radon daughters in uranium mines. The measurements were taken over periods of days or weeks for given locations or location occupations within these mines. Because the sampling applies to specific intervals of time and specific locations, a method is suggested f or the eventual application of a monitoring program which would be suitable on an annual basis for these locations. The present data and analyses thereof are not justifiably applicable to a monitoring regimen on an annualbasis, without a number of additional assumptions.The aim of the present analyses of concentration measurements is the determination of the minimum number of measurements required to achieve an annual radon daughter exposure estimate, for individual workers, having an error no greater than 50% at the 95% confidence level. The criterion of accuracy is taken from a statement in the American National Standard, Radiation Protection in Uranium Mines (ANSI NI3.8-I973), and is currently used, in somewhat modified form, as a guide to uranium mining licensees in Canada. Uncertainties associated with occupancy time are ignored in the present analysis. IntroductionOne of the principal aims of any scheme of radiation protection is that of improving the accuracy of exposure estimation for workers. The example presented here is from the area of radon daughter exposure estimation for uranium miners. The conventional means of estimating workers' exposures is grab sampling of radon daughter concentrations combined with occupancy time weighting in the various work and travel locations. Uncertainties exist in each of these components, and in an environment of highly variable radon daughter concentrations (such as an active uranium mine) one is always uncertain as to the representativeness of the grab sample (compared to the average concentration) unless a sophisticated monitoring scheme has been implemented based on previous experience in such an environment.Improvements in the accuracy and precision of employee radon daughter exposure records depend, primarily, on three factors;"

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is located in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, 50 km southeast of Revelstoke. The property is being explored by a joint venture between Newmont Exploration of Canada and Esso Minerals Canada.The deposit is associated with a small granodiorite stock of Upper Cretaceous age (76 Ma) which has variably altered the surrounding schists, argillites and marbles of the lower Paleozoic Lardeau Group to hornjelsic biotite schists and skarn. The intrusive is composed of a small stock and an intersecting network of northeast- and northwest-trending dykes at surface that coalesce downward into a larger stock. There are two main phases of intrusion, with an earlier quartz porphyritic granodiorite cut by an intra-mineral ""quartz diorite"" porphyry. A strong sub-vertical north-trending fault controls the distribution of the mineralized stock work and displays post-mineral movement.Molybdenite, accompanied by pyrite and pyrrhotite, is mainly present along the margins of veins in a well-developed quartz stock work, but occasionally is strongly disseminated in microfractured intrusives. The stock work is strongest in and around the contacts of the intrusive and its apophyses, and occurs over a vertical range of more than 1,000 m. As defined by the 0.10% MoS] contour, the main mineralized zone is up to 300 m long by 200m wide. Preliminary drill-indicated reserves, currently being revised, are approximately 50 million tonnes of 0.23% MoS2, within which are several zones of higher-grade material. Hydrothermal alteration, as defined by quantitative X-ray diffraction studies on composite core sections, is composed of a central quartz/K-feldspar/albite/minor biotite zone coincident with molybdenum mineralization, which is overlapped by a slightly later, antipathetic quartz/ sericite/pyrite zone. Ankeritic carbonate is also a common alteration mineral, but only traces of fluorite, and no topaz or sulfosalts, have been observed. Analysis for trace elements such as Sn, W, Bi, Sb, As, Hg, U, Ag, Au, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn and F has been limited except for Sn and W, which appear to be zoned inside and outside the Mo zone respectively; the other elements do not show detectable patterns thus far."
