Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.

The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

The kinetic and practical aspects of the extraction of copper from copper-rich solutions by cementation on iron was investigated. Tests were made on the effect of stirring speed, cupric sulphate concentration, acid concentration, temperature, and ferric sulphate concentration on the reaction rate and excess iron consumption.Most kinetic investigations were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent any oxidation of the iron or copper metals. The stirring mechanism for all tests incorporated the use of a rotating impeller above a static disc in the solution. The activation energy for cementation on the steel disc at high stirring speed was 8·6 kcal/mole, indicating a predominant chemical control.Increasing the pH first decreased, then above pH 3, increased the reaction rate. Additions of sodium sulphate also significantly increased the reaction rate.The use of high temperature and high pH under an inert atmosphere has been suggested for increasing the reaction rate and producing a high purity sponge copper product.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. Occasional, sporadic and small occurrences of lollingite in the Broken Hill lode have been described,(l) mostly in the garnet sandstone in the foot-wall and under-wall of the Broken Hill lode. The lollingite contains appreciable percentages of cobalt and nickel and is regarded as an early mineral in the development of the lode; and, with the incoming of the sulphides, it has suffered considerable replacement by arsenopyrite. During the conversion of iron arsenide into the iron sulpho-arsenide, ilie nickel and most of the cobalt are removed in solution and are inferred to reappear in niccolite and other minerals that have been recorded among the later minerals of the Broken Hill lode. As a result of observations of the officers of ilie Broken Hill South Ltd., an occurrence of cobaltite can now be recorded which has developed by an analogous type of replacement.Cobaltite has previously been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols lode in the vicinity of the rich deposits of silver, though not in contact with them. Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.

Since the last paper on mining methods was presented to the Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1:960, numerous advances have been made in drilling and blasting techniques at Mount Morgan. This paper describes the drilling and blasting methods being employed in the open cut. The change over to track mounted percussion drills for all types of primary drilling is almost complete and new techniques such as detergent drilling and pressure loading of ANFO are being applied successfully.
