"The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

In dealing with the pulverization and treatment of auriferous ores, it may be stated that there is not one system of treatment applicable to all classes. In the southern portion of New Zealand the ores generally contain free gold, with scarcely any impurity that is, it is found in an almost pure state, without any alloy, and its dissemination amongst the matrix is generally in tolerably coarse particles. The only difficulties the mill man has to contend with, are the economical concentration of pyrites, which in some of the lodes are rich in gold, and the extraction of the gold the pyrites contain. In some of the lodes there is what may be termed float gold, that is, the particles of the precious metal are so finely divided that it passes over the quicksilver tables, and, unless there are other appliances for saving it, this class of gold is entirely lost.Indeed it is only within the last five years that any attention has been given, in the southern portion of the colony, to saving the fine gold that has passed the amalgamating tables. In the North Island the ores are very complex there are scarcely two mines, although they may be adjoining each other, where the bullion is of the same character. On every field the gold is alloyed with silver', and in combination with other metals and mineral substances, such as copper, zinc, antimony, galenfl, iron, sulphur, arsenic, etc., and, in some instaaces, cinnabar, as in the case of the Champion lode at Tui Creek, Te Aroha. Ores of this class are extremly difficult to treat satisfactorily.

Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

The Autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) mill is essentially a short retention time centrifugal mill, designed to effectively harness extraordinarily high concentrations of input energy for efficient particle size reduction. The mill which has an operating duty band extending from primary to ultra-fine also has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage size reductions of either coarse or fine mineral feeds, in both wet or dry operating modes. This paper covers developments following a recent optimisation programme which confirmed that mill shell speed and the velocity differential between the shell and the rotating internal disc assembly tips could be optimised in relation to specific energy for a given feed rate and feed size providing the product size remains constant. Subsequent test-work further demonstrated the versatility of the mill with duties ranging from the removal of surface contamination associated with heavy mineral concentrate particles to the production of premium ultra-fine talc, from a single stage of size reduction. Open circuit grinding of a rougher gravity concentrate to liberate gold ahead of leaching also highlighted the scope for the application of low cost KAD milling for a range of hydrometallurgical feed preparation duties, which involve fine and ultra-fine grinding.CITATION:Kelly, J and Kelsey, C, 2013. For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

Unrelieved residual strains can influence the states of stress in rock masses. If cheap, stable structures are to be constructed in Tock in which large pressures are exterted by unrelieved residual strains, the pressures must be either utilized or neutralized. A photoelastic technique has been used to show that the release of residual strains in rocks is influenced by the mechanical properties of anisotropic rock fabrics. The relationships between directions of residual strain release and the attitudes of minor geological structures have been determined. For engineering design purposes it is possible to estimate the principal stress directions in rock containing unrelieved residual strains if the attitudes of such minor geological structures as foliation planes, lineations, and joints are known.INTRODUCTIONQuarry workers have long been aware that near-surface rocks may be highly stressed. In many cases the stresses are too large to be the result of gravitational loads. Dale (1923, pp. 34-35) gives many instances of deformation produced by the violent release of residual strains in quarry rocks. Coates (1963) has described powerful rock bursts and cases of rock deformation underground implying the existence of much larger stresses than are likely to result from present-day gravitational loads. Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. Geochemical data on Australian granites and pegmatites, and the mineral components of these rocks, are compared with that obtained in similar studies in the U.S.S.R. and elsewhere.The geochemical character of tin granites and the trace chemistry of their component minerals, particularly biotites, have some significance as ore guides in prospecting for tin.The primary geochemical dispersion of tin can be readily tested both in the laboratory and field by colourimetric methods, after volatilization with ammonium iodide, using modifications of the method described by Wood (1958).Secondary dispersions of tin in residual soils or alluvia can likewise be readly tested by rapid colourimetric methods in the field, but simple hydraulic methods, handling larger sample volumes, give reliable outlines of dispersion patterns.INTRODUCTIONThe search for tin ores, whether lode or placer in type, is usually directed on genetic grounds to country within or adjoining acid intrusives.A long established means of prospecting is to test samples for cassiterite by panning or other hydraulic separation.These methods can be used on crushed lode material or the natural materials from placers.With the advent of new techniques for extraction and for colourimetric analysis for tin (Wood, 1958 and Ross and White, 1961) a means is available for rapid analysis of materials not susceptible to quantitative testing by hydraulic methods because of the fine sizings of cassiterite or the occurrence of tin structurally held in minerals. The new methods thus opened up the field of tin prospecting by extending the search for ore guides to genetically associated rocks and minerals, wall ror-ks of veins and a wider range of superficial deposits.

A consideration of mining ventures and the changes of an environmental nature that occur. The paper is introduced with a general statement claiming recognition that mining ventures are important to human well-being but that these need to be justified against the environmental changes that they bring about. The various factors that need to be considered are cited followed by an historical review of mining activities. The various environmental issues are discussed under three headings; socio-economic, physical and biological, prior to reviewing the world's demand for minerals including fossil fuels. In conclusion guidelines for appraising mining ventures relative to environmental changes that may occur, are given.

Tertiary volcanic rocks make up a significant proportion of the surficial cover rocks of New Zealand, especially in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Industrial minerals that are associated with or derived from the volcanic rocks include: amorphous silica, allophane, bentonite, diatomite, ignimbrite building stone, illite clays, halloysite clay, obsidian, perlite, pumice, sulphur, titanomagnetite ironsand and zeolite. Of these: bentonite, ignimbrite building stone, perlite, pumice and titanomagnetite ironsand have been mined and processed for 20 to 30 years, but many of the others require further characterisation of the resource and/or development of markets.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit models for halloysite clays in rhyolite and for zeolites in altered vitric tuffs. These models include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic and geothermal processes that have produced the minerals and their source volcanic rocks. Halloysite clay deposits at Matauri Bay (Northland) have formed from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite. Clinoptilolite + mordenite zeolite deposits in the Ngakuru area (Rotorua district) have formed from hydrothermal alteration of volcanic glass in lacustrine sediments and ignimbrite. Further refinement and application of these models will result in a better understanding of the mineralogy, localisation and origin of the deposits, with consequent applications in exploration and resource assessments.

Today computers are accepted as a standard item in industry and they perform a variety of tasks over a wide spectrum of activities from mine planning and CAD to data processing and spreadsheet work. However many problems particularly in the. area of decision making where there are no clear mathematical models available and usually the output or answer is dependent to some extent on a heuristic approach, don't lend themselves to conventional solutions using standard procedural algorithms. Recently a number of techniques have evolved primarily from the enhanced capabilities of modem equipment, which are capable of solving these problems. This paper is a brief overview of these rather unconventional developments of computer technology in the area of artificial intelligence with reference to their application in mining.

Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100°C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

In redesigning the cyanide plant at Mount Torrens, in conjunction with Mr. L. W. Grayson, the manager, several minor alterations were introduced in order to have the operations under thorough control, and these having proved serviceable may be of sufficient interest to merit a description here. The lixiviation vats, though only 8 feet in diameter, were retained, but the pipes leading away from the bottom were reduced from two inches to half-an-inch in diameter, and had a fall to the zinc boxes of about 4 feet. As these small pipes were completely filled by the solutions fiowing away from the vats, they exerted a suction equal to their fall and thus hastened the rate of flow, so that tailings containing a larger proportion of slimes could be treated than was possible where the larger pipes were used, as, there not being sufficient fiow of solution to keep the latter filled, no suction could be obtained with them. It was found that with'most of the tailings treated a sufficient flow could be obtained from the half-inch pipes when the taps on, them were only one-third to half open. The lower end of each of these pipes was connected by means on indiarubber tubing with the sille hole of 11 in aspirator bottle, and to the mouth of this bottle a few feet of similar tubing was connected, so that the solutions coming through could be directed into either of the fixed tubes leading respectively to the waste water tank the strong solution zinc boxes or the weak solution zinc boxes.In working the vats, the following method was found to give good results. While filling the vats with tailings the taps were left open, so that the water might drain off into the waste water tank the surface of the tailings was carefully levelled. When the strong solution was run in at the top, the air contained in the interstices of the tailings was forced through the half-inch pipe at the bottom as a strong blast, instead of, as I believe js usual, escaping by means of channels formed by it through the tailings, and thus tending, it would appeal, to render the disposition of the tailings less even and to make.

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively.
