Talvivaara deposits, Kuusilampi and Kolmisoppi, comprise one of the largest sulfide nickel resources in the world with 642 Mt in Measured and Indicated Resource categories. TalvivaaraÆs preferred extraction technology is bioheapleaching, which is already widely used for other metals, notably copper and gold. The company has demonstrated the viability of bioheapleaching technology for the extraction of nickel using the Talvivaara ore. The leaching process is heat generating and therefore suitable for the subarctic climatic conditions. The planned annual metal production is 33 000 t of nickel, 60 000 t of zinc, 10 000 t of copper and 1200 t of cobalt. Talvivaara deposits are well-suited for open pit mining due to a thin overburden, favourable resource geometry and a low waste to ore ratio. The ore is relatively low-grade, but well suited to bioheapleaching due to its high sulfide content. Bioheapleaching is a process whereby metals are leached from ore as a result of bacterial action. The bacteria used in the Talvivaara bioheapleaching process are endemic to the area and therefore well adjusted to the prevailing environmental conditions. The solution is collected at the bottom of the heaps and either re-circulated through the heap or fed to metal recovery. In metal recovery, nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt are precipitated from the pregnant leach solution and filtered to produce saleable metal products. After the metals are removed, the solution is further purified and returned to irrigate the heaps. Mining, bioheapleaching and metal recovery techniques for the Talvivaara mine have been tested in a 17 000 t on-site demonstration trial during 2005 and 2006. Subsequent construction of the mine started in 2007 and commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2008.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.

Wet mining of auriferous gravels at L & MÆs Waikaka operation in Southland creates spoil dumps derived from stripping of a clay rich overburden, tailings from past dredging and the processing of auriferous sands and gravels. Over recent times, spoil dumps have slumped on six occasions, threatening the viability of the wet mining operation. Close examination of slump morphology, coupled with the sequence of material placement and rate of dumping suggested a mechanism associated with undrained failure of a 2 m layer of silt and sand tails forming the base of dumps.Commencing with some information on the geotechnical properties of source overburden, back analysis of failure morphology and sequence and development of undrained loading conditions from first principals, the most likely failure mechanism and factors controlling failure were defined. Based on analysis results, a scheme to stabilise the lowwall dumps was developed and implemented, augmented by continuous monitoring of pore pressures in the basal wet tails, and laboratory testing for confirmation of computed material properties.Lowwall spoil stability has improved since implementation involving changes to the method of spoil loading, and modification of wet tails composition to improve permeability and drainage of the basal wet tails under load. The method and approach to prediction and verification of failure mechanism provide a sound basis for continued mining of deeper auriferous gravels.

When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in plane-polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed which are characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film!coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins. Bituminous coal gave the best results.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

Esso-BHP have installed a production supervisory control system that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control.The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexibility to handle future variations in operating conditions.The system will be extended to the Halibut platform late in 1970 and to the Kirlgfish platforms during 1971.

Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. The main problem with these models is the inability to solve real size mining problems. We present a mixed integer linear programming formulation for the open pit long-term production scheduling problem. To reduce the number of binary integer variables in the formulation, we aggregate blocks into larger units referred to as mining-cuts. We present a semi-supervised clustering algorithm which aggregates smaller blocks based on rock types and grade ranges into mining-cuts without introducing an error in the grade estimated values. The cluster-based aggregation algorithm is fully integrated into an MILP mine production scheduling prototype software. We have implemented, verified, and validated our models. The efficiency of the new platform is evaluated through iron ore mine case study.

After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

New Zealand Steel's Taharoa titano-magnetite mine, south of Auckland, set two national load records when it transported around 2000 t of mining equipment three kilometres overland on time, under budget and without safety incident. It was the first time in New Zealand that four platform trailers were assembled end-to-end to transport a load. It was also the first time that a single load of 1000 t was transported on platform trailers. The need for the relocation of all equipment was realized five years ago. It took two years of planning and specialist advice to relocate the mine's 250 t dredge, 500 t surge bin, 1000 t concentrator plant and ancillary equipment from the Southern Mining Region across a specially designed haul road to the Central Mining Region. The project was carried out during a six-week shutdown in early 2001. Two dry docks were constructed, one at each end of the relocation route. The equipment was floated into a dismantling pond that was interconnected with the dry dock in the Southern Region. Through pumping, the water levels were controlled to allow transfer of the separated units from the dismantling pond into the dry dock. Once drained, sets of self-elevating platform trailers were used to transport the main units, one at a time, between the dry docks. Five prime movers were used to pull the loads. At the receiving end, the units were off-loaded in a dry dock interlinked with ,the first mining pond. The equipment was relocated because the reserves in the Southern Mining Region were mined out. A natural watercourse û the Wainui Stream û defines the northern boundary of the Southern Region and the objective became to relocate the mining plant to the other side of the stream and re-establish in the Central Region. The project team selected the trailers as the most effective means of transporting the equipment, particularly given the non-invasive means of crossing the Wainui Stream. Negotiations with prime contractor Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage Ltd commenced in mid-2000. The remainder of 2000 was spent in developing concepts with the contractor, detailed designing, preparing the dry docks, haul road and initial mine plan for the Central Region. These activities occurred with no conflict to the normal site production.

SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. "Geochemical characterisation is done based upon the geology and metallurgical batch testing prior to commencement of the operation of the plant.  Tailings repository design is based upon geochemical assessment of the waste material, as well as the geomechanical issues associated with storing the waste. The resultant conceptual and detailed design is incorporated into the environmental impact statement (EIS), upon which mine approval is based. The entire environmental monitoring and harm mitigation program, which is usually a condition of the Mine Lease approval, is based upon the applicability of the original characterisation.Tacit to this process is that there is no change in the geochemistry of the tailings, i.e. no change in the implications for acid & metalliferous or saline/neutral mine drainage (AMD/SNMD) generation. But any changes in milling and processing can have a substantive impact on the geochemical behaviour of the tailings metallurgy, and potentially render an operation non-compliant within the conditions of the mine license.Environmental and statutory approval implications for continuous improvements of metallurgy need to be understood because unintended consequences could cost more than the benefits of the improvement, and in some cases cost more than all the profit made from the mine.  Examples uncovered during audit and consultant practice will be presented together with a process to ensure implications for adverse environmental harm and license conditions are fully considered.*This paper is only available for individual download.
