High silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and phosphorus (P) contents in iron ore adversely affect the quality of iron products. The removal of those impurities from iron ore is an essential point in further iron ore processing. In this paper, the removal of P, SiO2 and Al2O3 impurities from iron ore by alkaline drying followed by reverse cationic flotation is discussed. The reverse cationic flotation experiments are performed using the iron ore samples without and with alkaline drying pretreatment. All other flotation conditions except pulp pH (4–12) and particle size distributions (-45 to -250 μm) are held constant. A typical collector and frother, such as dodecylamine acetate (DAA) and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC), are used in the flotation experiments. Alkaline treatment is conducted before flotation using sodium hydroxide at fixed conditions. The impact of alkaline drying on the performance of iron ore flotation is evaluated based on the removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3, iron grade, and iron recovery compared with the iron ore flotation without alkaline drying (direct flotation). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates hematite and goethite are the main minerals in the iron ore, which assays 62.8 mass per cent Fe, 0.232 mass per cent P, 7.1 mass per cent SiO2 + Al2O3 (total) determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Results indicate that a combined approach is more effective for removing P and SiO2 + Al2O3 impurities from iron ore than the direct processing technique because the maximum removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3 are 48.2 per cent and 66.5 per cent from the alkaline dried iron ore when 8.4 per cent and 13.1 per cent from the non-alkaline dried iron ore.

Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. A risk assessment was undertaken of the aquatic ecosystem and bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in fish at the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa, Queensland. Residual contamination of metals and metalloids in Leichhardt River sediment was assessed and arose from mine practices using river discharge in the 1940s. The ecological risk assessment of sediments involved comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic with those of the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Results indicated that all sites including the background site exceeded one or both the ISQG-high and ISQG-low trigger values based on total concentrations. A lesser number of sites exceeded the ISQG-low trigger values following the 1 M hydrochloric acid extract step, which was used as an indication of bioavailability. An additional risk from particulate matter in river sediment is that acute human toxicity from the consumption of fish contaminated with metals and metalloids is unlikely. The potential risk was assessed by comparing with the maximum levels set by FSANZ (2010) for fish consumption by children and adults. In general, the liver of the fish have higher heavy metal and metalloid concentrations compared to the muscle. Frequent or regular consumption of fish from the Leichhardt River that exceed maximum levels (ML) of heavy metals and metalloids is not recommended. Risk analysis showed that an adult can consume up to 5 kg of fish fillets every day from fish caught at the man-made Lake Moondarra downstream on Leichhardt River and still be within safe consumption levels whilst a child can eat up to 1 kg daily.CITATION:Noller, B N, Ng, J C, Matanitobua, V, Harris, H H, Zheng, J and Huynh, T, ?2014. Ore roasting has long been used for beneficiation and assay upgrading of different ores. In this process, which is mainly used for sulfide ores, the ore is heated to a high temperature. More specifically, it is a metallurgical process involving gas-solid reactions at elevated temperatures. Some types of Iron ore are weak in magnetic properties. Hematite, goethite and limonite are classified in this group. Unlike magnetite, which shows strong magnetic susceptibility, these ores are hard to beneficiate through magnetic separation route. Many researches have focused on gravity separation and flotation routes for upgrading these ores and these methods have also been utilised in the industry. One of the methods to whose industrial application less attention has been paid is magnetising roasting in which the non-magnetic iron ore is transformed to magnetite which is further beneficiated through magnetic separation. In this study, magnetising roasting tests have been performed on one goethite sample in order to check the feasibility of using this method for this specific ore in industrial scale. It is worth mentioning that high intensity magnetic separation have been performed on this sample before but the achieved results were not promising. Results have revealed that through magnetising roasting magnetite content of the ore could be increased from 1.7 per cent up to about 25 per cent. FeO content of the feed sample was increased from 1.03 per cent up to around 9.25 per cent. Also optimum size distribution for achieving the best results in magnetising roasting for this sample has been determined through this study. The best results were achieved when the ore size was 0–10 mm. The effect of coal ratio, time and temperature on the process have also be studied. A coal ratio of 5 per cent, time of 30 min and a temperature of 850°C were determined to be the optimum conditions. Finally, the technical feasibility of utilising magnetising roasting for this specific ore has been confirmed.

This paper describes the design, manufacture and site services associated with the supply of mine hoists for the new mine under construction by Falconbridge Limited in Ontario, Canada. Two new shafts are being sunk, and the hoisting equipment at each shaft can be summarised as follows: Ventilation shaft:4.66 m diameter double-drum second-hand hoist, originally in operation at San Manuel Mine, Arizona, to be used as the shaft sinking hoist. The second-hand hoist presented a challenge in that during its previous life, the hoist had been intensively operated during service at San Manuel Mine, and this paper describes the scope of refurbishment work undertaken, both electrically and mechanically, to ensure future reliable operation, together with the requirement to meet Canadian and Ontario regulations and codes of practice. 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist to be used as a second means of egress. Main shaft:4.57 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used initially as the shaft sinking hoist, and subsequently to be converted to the equivalent of a single-drum multi-rope hoist for service duties during the production phase; 5.49 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used for skip hoisting during the production phase; and 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist.The new hoists are all designed to comply with SABS requirements such that hoisting with reduced rope safety factors will be possible in the future. This paper describes the principles involved both mechanically and electrically. Particular attention is paid to the conversion of the main shaft service hoist from a double-drum sinking hoist to a multi-rope hoist.This paper describes the ac electrical powertrains (drives and motors) used that eliminate the need for harmonic filters and reactive power compensation equipment since they exhibit no negative effects on the utility electrical network system. This paper describes the logistical challenges of installing, commissioning and setting to work a series of five hoists in a short time frame.

The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

A new approach to more reliably predict the Ni (and Fe, Mg) composition of Ni laterites was tested for RC samples from the (siliceous) oxide–style, Siberia North deposit, Kalgoorlie Nickel Project (KNP), in the north-eastern Yilgarn (WA) using partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra over the 380 - 2500 nm wavelength range with a multi–element chemistry data set. PLSR cross-validation models were developed to predict FeO, MgO and Ni contents in composite samples with bulk composition limits of >0.08 wt per cent Ni and <6 wt per cent MgO. Calibration and validation models showed a strong, linear trend for predicting FeO and, to a lesser extent, Ni content, whereas PLSR models for predicting Mg content were less reliable. This reflected the prevailing mineralogy and associated element deportment within the oxide laterite profile. For example, Fe and Ni distribution is controlled by relatively few minerals, predominantly goethite and, to a lesser extent, the Fe3+-bearing smectite, nontronite. Magnesium is associated with a range of Mg-bearing minerals, some of which are compositionally complex (eg serpentine, talc, chlorite, smectite and carbonates). Magnesium chemistry alone does not reflect the varied mineralogy of samples with relatively high (5 - 6 wt per cent) MgO contents, which can be spectrally distinct. Hence, samples with similar Mg contents, though comprising Mg-bearing minerals with distinct reflectance spectra, were difficult to model (eg smectite versus Mg-carbonates). The findings of this study demonstrate that characterisation of Ni laterite composition may be achieved as part of routine logging of either drill chips or diamond drill core using PLSR analysis, but that a detailed understanding of the mineral-element association is essential for reliable predictive analysis. This has particular relevance to characterising the geometallurgy of Ni laterites, especially where deposits may be classed as the same type, but have distinct compositional and mineralogical differences.

The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper-gold open pit operation situated in northwest Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper, with a current throughput of 11 Mtpa, however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in mid 2011. The deposit dips approximately 45º and extends for at least another 400 m vertically below the final 530 m deep pit design.Construction and development of a sublevel caving (SLC) operation beneath the open pit was approved in December 2009. The feasibility design requires 39 km of development to be completed prior to production, which will commence in the fourth quarter of 2011. Initial ore production will be trucked and will increase to 3 Mtpa by the end of 2012, after which a hoisting shaft will be used. Ore production will then increase to 5 Mtpa in 2013 and ultimately to 6 Mtpa in 2016.Two 3000 kilo watt of refrigeration (kW(R)) modular refrigeration plants will be installed, as well as two 1600 kW mixed-flow fans capable of a combined flow rate of 780 m3/s at a total pressure loss across the mine of 2000 Pa. The main fans will be installed underground and will exhaust into the base of the pit.The following challenges were faced in the development of the ventilation and refrigeration network:•a relatively steep geothermal gradient,•tropical ambient conditions,•working under a wide pit shell, and•a large underground trucking fleet prior to shaft commissioning.A considerable number of ventilation studies were conducted with later studies extensively using Ventsim Visual™ mine ventilation software to complete the design process of the ventilation and refrigeration networks, including the comparison of several alternative designs. The paper focuses on design challenges prior to the commissioning of the hoisting shaft, and discusses resistance optimisation and occupational hygiene-related design parameters, such as heat and diesel emissions, production level ventilation, main fan selection and location, and refrigeration requirements.

The base metal ore from the hanging wall of White's orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., is composed of copper and oth.er sulphides in a rock described as a phyllite,.which consists essentially of micaceous minerals with a little graphite.Fast selective flotation was obtained in acid circuit below pH 3·5. In neutral or alkaline circuit flotation was generally slow and selectivity very poor due to the ready flotation of part of the sericite. However, it was found that fast selective flotation could be obtained in neutral or alkaline circuit by either of two treatment methods following pre-conditioning in acid circuit; firstly by decanting or filtering a substantial part of the circuit liquor, and secondly by neutralizing with soda ash or lime, providing the collector was added before neutralizing. Otherwise pre-conditioning with acid brought about no improvement whatever.To explain this behaviour, three possible reasons for the flotation of part of the sericite are examined. There is evidence that some sericite floats because of thin films of either sulphides or graphite, but it seems likely such particles will float under all the conditions investigated.On the other hand, if it is assumed that part of the sericite floats because it is activated by metallic ions derived from the circuit water, a reasonable explanation can be given for the variations in flotation behaviour.INTRODUCTIONWhite's uranium orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., sixty miles south of Darwin, is mined and treated by Territory Enterprises Pty. Ltd. (a subsidiary of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd.), who are managers of the Rum Jungle project on behalf of the Australian Commonwealth Government.This ore contains a significant quantity of copper sulphides, and a flotation plant recovers a copper concentrate from the tailing remaining after the uranium has been extracted.In contact with the hanging wall of the uranium-copper orebody, a further mass of non-uraniferous sulphide ore occurs, and the present paper relates to the behaviour in flotation of this base metal ore.

The main techniques for removing phosphorus as an impurity element in iron ores are physical separation (eg magnetic separation, flotation) and chemical separation (acid leaching, alkaline leaching and bioleaching) processes. When phosphorus occurs in iron ores as phosphate minerals (eg apatite), physical separation techniques are available to remove the gangue minerals from iron ores. On the other hand, chemical separation techniques are suitable for reducing phosphorus levels when phosphorus is associated with iron oxides and hydroxide minerals (eg hematite and goethite) in iron ores. In this study, the dephosphorisation behaviour of high‐phosphorus iron ore was investigated using a combined alkaline roasting and water washing route. Roasting experiments were conducted in a laboratory electric muffle furnace using various concentrations of sodium hydroxide (0–50 g/kg-ore) at different temperatures (100–800°C), varying prolonged roasting times (0–2 h), and different particle size fractions (-45 – -250 μm) of iron ore. Subsequent water washing experiments were employed at various pulp densities (30–1000 g/L) and different times (30 s – 60 min) at ambient temperature. Hematite and goethite were the main minerals in the high-phosphorus iron ore identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The iron ore assaying 63.40 mass % Fe (total), 0.240 mass % P, 4.53 mass % SiO2, and 4.87 mass % Al2O3 were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The results showed that the dephosphorisation rate of the iron ore was reached 40 per cent under roasting with 50 g/kg-ore NaOH at 300°C for 2 hours followed by water washing for 30 s with a pulp density of 300 g/L, reducing phosphorus level from 0.240 mass % to 0.142 mass %. At the same time, the iron grade was reduced from 63.4 per cent to 59.5 per cent, caused by an iron loss. Results suggest that the phase transformation of goethite induces the dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore under alkaline roasting conditions

This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. Pulang Copper Mine, being China's largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal. The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.

The Jinfeng mine is Sino Gold's flagship project and is the second largest gold mine in China. Sino Gold Limited (SGL) holds 82 per cent equity in the Sino-Foreign joint venture Sino Guizhou Jinfeng Mining Limited (SGJML) with a Chinese partner. Jinfeng is located in a relatively remote site in southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is considered to be the largest known Carlin type deposit in China. Jinfeng Plant has the world's third largest BIOX« bacterial oxidation facilities (790 t/d), treating highly refractory concentrate generated from crushing, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling and bulk sulfide flotation operations. The Jinfeng Plant construction started in February 2005, commissioning was completed in April 2007, and commercial gold production was achieved in September 2007. This paper describes the successful operations of Jinfeng Plant over the last two years. The key events of the project development are described, from the project background and process design, through to the commissioning and achieving design mill throughput of 3600 t/d resulting 180 000 ounces of gold per year. Process aspects of the BIOX« and carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations over the last two years are discussed which illustrate a very high BIOX« oxidation rate (more that 97 per cent) and excellent CIL recovery (more than 96 per cent). The management of the Jinfeng plant CIL tailings detoxification and filtration is described, and Jinfeng has became the first BIOX« processing plant to have achieved dry stacking of detoxified and pressure filtered CIL tailings. Current efforts to recover cyanide from CIL detoxified solution and the achievement of a zero discharge site water balance are also introduced. Many improvement projects have been made over the last two years which have culminated in a 15 per cent increase in mill throughput over the design and BIOX« CIL recovery increasing from 92.5 per cent to 96 per cent. Significant operating cost reductions from lowered of acid, lime and cyanide usage through process modifications and technical innovations are discussed.

Very little public domain information is available on the exploration signature of the Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt deposit. From 1987 to 1990 the BMR (now AGSO) carried out geological, geophysical and geochemical (whole-rock, stream, soil and rock chip) surveys within the South Alligator and Kakadu Conservation Zones and defined several key parameters useful for exploration programs. The essential geological ingredients for the style of Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt¦U deposit are oxidised, low pH fluids, dilatant fault structures, a thick neutral to oxidised cover sequence and chemical traps in the basement. In geophysical data, the areas surrounding the mineralisation can be detected by airborne magnetics as major lows in magnetite-rich rocks, whereas in airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data, imaged spectrometric channel ratios such as U2/I'h and U2/K highlighted alteration surrounding the deposits. Three types of stream-sediment and soil samples were taken from each site: (1) -1 mm mesh, 5 kg sample for bulk cyanide leach (BCL) analysis for Au, Pd, and Pt; (2) 1 kg sample of -1 mm mesh sediment for fire assay/ICPMS analysis for Au, Pt and Pd; and (3) 50 g - 180¦ mesh sample for a variety of trace element analyses, including Au, Pd and Pt. Techniques 2 and 3 gave similar results for Au, Pt and Pd, while the recovery rates for Pd and Pt from the BCL samples were considerably lower. Other trace elements did not define unique indicators for Pt or Pd mineralisation, as each sample reflected the dominant lithology in the drainage basin. Rock chip surveys were useful in determining which faults were associated with the ore fluid in regions of multiple fracturing. Results from these exploration-style surveys also confirmed that the Coronation Hill deposit is a variant of the unconformity-style of mineralisation, as all significant geochemical and/or geophysical results occur at or below the unconformity.

A critical issue associated with mining operations has been the stability of tailings impoundments. Some breach events have produced catastrophic tailings flows that have caused significant economic damage, mass casualties and long-lasting environmental impact in the downstream environment. This paper reports independently estimated values of runout distance, inundation area and fahrboschung of 16 tailings flows. The adopted methodology involves the geospatial analysis of satellite and aerial imagery to classify each tailings flow into a primary impact zone (Zone 1: main overland flow) and a secondary impact zone (Zone 2: along-creek diluted flow) to characterise runout. Only Zone 1 runout values are reported herein given the greater significance in relation to downstream impact. The fahrboschung is calculated using elevation data from global 30 m digital elevation models (DEMs) and source literature. The results show that all the selected tailings flows travelled long distances (2.4 km to 98.5 km) and inundated large areas (0.35 km2 to 27.0 km2) over very low fahrboschung values (0.04° to 4.8°). This indicates very high flow mobility that is largely governed by the high water content sourced from interstitial waters and, in many cases, supernatant ponds. Scatter plots display poor correlations owing to the complexity and variability in travel path characteristics (confinement, slope angle and obstructions) and the inherent properties of the flowing mass. The slope angle of the travel path exerts a strong control over the flow velocity which has implications on kinetic energy and downstream geomorphological impact. Mean tailings flow velocities may range from ~6 m/s on near-flat, open terrain to over 30 m/s in relatively steeper, channelised travel paths, indicating that tailings flows fall within the extremely rapid and high mobility spectrum of global mass movements. The presented work forms an inceptive part of the CanBreach tailings project, a major component of which is to develop a comprehensive database of case histories to examine the role of geotechnics, failure modes and downstream terrains in influencing tailings flow behaviour.
