The design and construction of a 2.5 million tonne per annum ship unloading system at the PWCS export coal terminal in Newcastle, NSW, has further increased the flexibility and sophistication of Australia's largest coal export facility. The system comprises a new unloading wharf serviced by a self unloading vessel, conveyor stream and multi compartment ground level storage shed. Coal is reclaimed from this shed by the largest portal scraper ever installed under cover. The system also provides additional flexibility by receiving coal from the existing PWCS road receival to improve scheduling. The PWCS can now simultaneously handle 11 coal types and receive from rail, road and sea at almost 15000 tonnes per hour.

The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

Acid mine drainage is an unavoidable consequence of some coal mining operations. Typically runoff pH is below 3.5 and at these pH levels heavy metals are mobilised. Leachate from coal reject dumps may require collection and treatment to raise the pH and precipitate the metals before being discharged.A bi-product of coal mining operations at Clarence Colliery is coarse washery reject. At present the coarse reject is deposited above ground and rehabilitated. Adjacent to Clarence Colliery is the Kable's Transport Pty Ltd sand mining operation. It has been proposed that co-disposal of the rejects from both operations may produce a product whose leachate has near neutral pH.

A simple and rapid method for delennining gold and silver in carbon samples is described. The method involves dissolution of carbon ash in a strong oxidising medium of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Gold and silver are determined in the resultant solution using atomic absorption speetrometry (AAS). The method is efficient and reproducible. Gold results are comparable to the standard fire assay results, with agreement of results within ± 5 per cent. The co-efficients of variation for gold and silver are 0.37 and 0.39 per cent respectively for six replicate analyses. The analysis of gold and silver in a batch of ten carbon samples can be completed in approximately four hours.

Studies by Telecom showed that the existing cable tunnel system in the Melbourne C.B.D. required expansion in order to meet the future telecommunications needs of the City. Due to physical locations of the various telephone exchanges in the CBD, together with a necessity to connect into existing ATC tunnels, a network of low cover small sized tunnels was proposed to maintain and extend the existing telephone cable network. This paper reviews the feasibility studies, design criteria and constructional aspects involved in building 5 tunnels (total length of 1850 m) and 13 chambers (4 open cut and 9 underground)-together with ancillary works, which form part of the new cable tunnel network.

The Olympic Dam Project constitutes a major resource of Copper and Uranium and has been under intensive evaluation since the discovery in 1975.A 500 metre deep rectangular shaft has been sunk into the deposit and this has been followed by 8400 metres of level, incline and decline development. 5 surface ventilation raises have also been constructed.Large scale trackless equipment is used to carry out the development, and productivity statistics are given.The paper describes the functionalised system used in the development program and discusses the maintenance support, and services required to carry out these works.The objectives of the Exploration Development program and the satisfactory results obtained from this work are also discussed.

Western Mining Corporation (W.M.C.)operate a 30 000 tpa nickel refinery at Kwinana, W.A. using the Sherritt Gordon Process. Following ammonia/air leaching of sulphideminerals and subsequent copper removal, nickel metal is produced as powder by hydrogen red-uction of the ammonium sulphate-rich solution. Batchwise reduction in pressure autoclaves is preceded by an oxidation/hydrolysis step to ensure nickel powder quality.The reduction process is energy intensive, requiring high temperatures and pressures. Present energy requirement is 24 GJ per tonne of nickel reduced. Of this, 95% represents steam and hydrogen consumption and 5% electric power. The design and operation of the red-uction circuit is reviewed, outlining the main areas of steam and hydrogen usage.

The recovery of gold from cyanide liquors is frequently effected by using activated carbon. Process economics however require non destructive methods of gold extraction from the carbon so that it may be recycled.Stripping at atmospheric pressure usingthe method of Zadra et al(l) suffers from the disadvantage of unfavourable kinetics with strip times of the order of 48-72 hours. Subsequent research has led to development of processes which strip the gold more rapidly namely: A.A.R.L. process, (2,3) organic solvent (4,5,6) and pressure stripping (7,8)This paper reports on a development of the pressure stripping technique in which stripping and electrowinning are carried out at elevated temperature and pressure.

Iron ore sintering is very complex with many interdependent variables. For the same ores, the sinter quality and sintering performance may vary significantly with the scale at which the sintering tests are conducted. Therefore it is important to understand the effect of test scale on sintering performance and sinter quality while interpreting the test results. In this paper, different scales of iron ore sintering research at CSIRO are described and compared. This is followed by the results of two sinter blends tested at different scales. The results are compared and correlated to demonstrate the benefits of iron ore sintering research at the laboratory (4 g), small (5 - 8 kg) and pilot (55 - 140 kg) scales.

Those developing or planning a new mining operation base their financial projections on amounts of gold produced as soon as practically possible. The choice and ongoing operation of mobile plant figures significantly in their projections. The implications of mobile plant selection are not always clear - until its too late.Our 'typical' gold mine would be a mine processing 800,000 tonnes of ore per annum, producing 37,000 ounces of gold with a life of mine of 10 years. Overburden layers are only evident in the first two years of operation.The pit will eventually, after some 5 years of mining, be some 300 metres deep, but confined to a mine radius of 2 kilometres.

I should like to congratulate Dr. Salamy on his most informative paper.Under the heading of "future development" Dr. Salamy states the intention of using 3 in. lifters. In this connection I should like to mention one or two of our findings at the Croesus Plant of North Kalgurli (1912) Limited. We have converted a 5i ft. x 11 ft. grate discharge ball mill to a high level overflow rod mill. When we were considering this conversion we explored the literature and decided on using 2t in. lifters on alternate liners-the results were not encouraging. The fundamentals concepts of roof support are similar between coal mining, metal mining and tunnelling and yet there are different design approaches, different hardware, and different levels of site investigation. This should not be the case and this paper discusses the key geotechnical issues that should underlie all roof support design - the need to reinforce defects. A design method to build a beam in laminated rock under high horizontal stresses is presented. The method allows for changing rock strengths, defect properties and varying horizontal stresses. At one level the design can be implemented with design charts and tables. Lessons learnt during the implementation of the designs at 5 different mine sites are Discussed.

Throughout industry in Australia, time lost through work accidents and illness is three times greater than strikes. In 1978 in New South Wales alone, 400 workers died, 125,000 were injured, 6,000 were indust- rially deafened, and 3,800 people died of occupational cancer. It has been estimated that less than 10% of workers injured make claims for common law damages. The figure is probably in fact much lower than that. However, common law damages claims are starting to become a boom industry and employers are only now starting to see the effect of the increase in Claims. I predict that within 5 years the number of common law damages claims made will increase dramatically.

The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. In situ synchrotron X-ray and in situ neutron diffraction-based experimentation have been implemented to characterise the formation of the complex calcium ferrite iron ore sinter bonding phases silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I. Experiments were carried out using fine-grained (<20 ¦m) sinter mixtures containing ~77 wt per cent Fe2O3, 14 wt per cent CaO, 3.5 wt per cent SiO2 and 5 wt per cent Al2O3, with diffraction data collected during heating until 1300 - 1350¦C, which was enough to ensure complete melting of the SFCA phases. In the case of the in situ synchrotron experimentation, results showed that altering the nature of the starting sinter mixture (ie substitution of goethite for hematite; substitution of an amorphous Al2O3-based mineral for gibbsite) did not have a significant effect on the thermal stability range of the SFCA phases. It did, however, have a profound effect on the formation and rate of consumption of the calcium-rich ferrite phases C2F and CF, and on the formation mechanisms of SFCA and SFCA-I. Owing to the deterioration of iron ore, the Al2O3 concentration in iron ore increases, and thus it is important to investigate the effect of increment in Al2O3 concentration on the microstructures of iron ore sinters. During the sintering process, a melt is present in the sinter for only a few minutes, and therefore the microstructure of the sinter doesn’t reach thermodynamic equilibrium. Nevertheless, the formation process of the microstructures can be interpreted and predicted to some extent from the equilibrium phase diagram. This study investigated the liquidus isotherm in the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3- 5 mass% Al2O3 system at 1240°C in air and the phase equilibria of silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (denoted by SFCA) and SFCA-I by XRD (X-ray diffraction analysis) and electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA). The following results were obtained: 1. The ferrite melt region with a high Fe2O3 concentration shifts to the lower Fe2O3 side than the liquidus isotherm in the CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3 system. 2. The compositional region of SFCA extends in the CaOꞏ3Fe2O3-4CaOꞏ3SiO2 direction than the silico-ferrite of calcium (denoted by SFC) composition region with a 0 mass% Al2O3. 3. SFCA-I is observed in the present system, which suggests that the increment in the Al2O3 concentration contributes to the stability of SFCA-I. These results imply that an increment in Al2O3 concentration in iron ore leads to a decrement in the volume fraction of the bonding phase and that the fraction of the SFCA phase increases, and those of 2CaOꞏSiO2 and slag phases decrease in the bonging phase. The SFCA-I phase is also precipitated from the slag with an Al2O3 concentration around 5 mass%.

Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.

An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014. This paper discusses the temporary support design methodology for the largest road caverns ever built in Australia—the Lutwyche Caverns—part of the Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia. The Lutwyche Caverns with a maximum excavated span of 27 m form a key component of this major road project, allowing on and off ramps merging with the underground highway. In addition to the two large span caverns, a 15 m soft ground tunnel with 5 m cover above the caverns and two 24 m deep burial chambers for the 12.4 m tunnel boring machines (TBMs) had to be built in record time at Lutwyche.The temporary support design methodology involved the use of a range of analytical approaches, including empirical methods to provide a starting point for design development, key block models to determine the potential influence of discontinuities on excavation stability and 2/3D continuum and discontinuum models to determine the potential influence of adjacent excavations and the proposed construction staging on the design. In addition, probabilistic analysis of potential kinematic instability using a discrete fracture network (DFN) approach was also undertaken to establish the critical block loads for the temporary lining, while the continuum and discontinuum models were used to design the support for the 1.5 m diameter rock pillar at the north end of the northbound cavern.The numerical modelling was undertaken in close conjunction with the contractor to develop the optimal construction sequence, considering the available construction equipment on-site and the overall project program requirements.
