Pyrite is one of the principal Au-bearing minerals in refractory gold ores. Significantly high Au concentrations of up to 5200 ppm are present in pyrite. Pyrite hosting high levels of Au is also enriched in As. Pyrite as an unwanted mineral ends up in wastes and constitutes one of the primary sources of As in the mining and metallurgical wastes. Arsenic can be readily released to the environment due to rapid oxidative dissolution of the host pyrite under atmospheric conditions. In order to determine the form and occurrence of arsenic in pyrite, micro-X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (XAFS) spectra were collected from a range of arsenical pyrite grains having different morphologies and a range of arsenic and gold concentrations. All the pyrite grains are characterised by the dominant edge aligned with As-1 valence state. In pyrite, arsenic atoms substitute for S atoms that are in six-fold coordination about each Fe atom. XAFS data suggest that As atoms occur in clusters within the pyrite structure. In addition to As-1, fine-grained, inclusion-rich and framboidal-type pyrite grains have a second As species at ~11 875 eV corresponding to As5+. This As5+ species in pyrite is highly variable and attributed to the oxidation of arsenic exposed on the surfaces of pyrite.

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

The Trident Gold Deposit has been successfully developed by Alacer Gold (formerly Avoca Resources Limited) into a 1.3 Mt/a operation in the space of four years from discovery to first gold pour (2008). The current in situ Resource for Trident is estimated to be 5 900 000 t @ 5.0 g/t for 940 000 ounces at a cut-off of 1 g/t or 2 g/t depending on ore style. Production to date (Alacer and previous owners) is in excess of 500 000 ounces. The deposit lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, where it is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, midway between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz). Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (Eastern Zone, Western Zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro; and thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed primarily at sheared lithological contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies. The initial interpretation of the Trident Deposit was based on steeply-dipping structures controlling the zones of mineralisation, with much of the targeting and drill-testing aimed at this style of orebody. Subsequent exposure of the orebodies has identified a series of shallow-east dipping mineralised systems (interpreted to be large reverse shears) that at their intersection with the steep-dipping structures cause significant gold enrichment. It is postulated that both orientations are primary fluid pathways with the intersection between the two resulting in zones with significantly high concentrations of gold mineralisation (in excess of 300 000 ounces). This new understanding on ore controls at Trident has identified that the thin lode-style shear-hosted laminated veins are continuous for over 1700 m along strike as they step en echelon down-plunge. In addition, a repetition and periodicity to the intersection between these steep dipping lode-style systems and the shallow-dipping mineralised zones (estimated to be 700 - 900 m down-plunge) has been identified which has considerably increased the down-plunge potential of the Trident Deposit.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova Operation (Nova), which is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA), mines and processes nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) sulfide ore from the magmatic Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger), which is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic age high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Albany Fraser Orogen. Over its 56-month life-of-mine (LOM) operations to 31 December 2020, Nova has processed 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co from its underground mine. At the end of 2020, both the Nova-Bollinger JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) and Ore Reserve estimate (ORE) were >90 per cent classified in the highest JORC Code confidence categories of Measured Mineral Resource and Proved Ore Reserve respectively. The high JORC Code classification confidences assigned to the Nova-Bollinger MRE and ORE results from the 386 km of surface and underground diamond drill testing of the deposit to a nominal 12.5 by 12.5 m pierce point spacing in mineralisation. The close spaced high-quality drilling and bulk mining method employed at Nova has effectively removed the need for any grade control modelling outside of the MRE process. Importantly, having only the one fully drilled out deposit being mined and only the one process plant, Nova’s reconciliation process is in the fortunate situation of not being confounded by issues such as external ore sources and constant updates as new grade control information becomes available. IGO’s Nova reconciliation processes are focused on reconciliation ratios that quantify operational period differences between the MRE and ORE head grade and tonnage forecasts and the process plant head actuals. These metrics have been used to identify key reconciliation issues and have initiated several studies into the causes for specific reconciliation results, which are discussed in the paper. In late 2020, a period of sustained poor reconciliation results led to the recognition that increasing the understanding of risk between the MRE and ORE should be investigated. To assist with modelling stope level risk within the mine plan and subsequent reconciliation, an attempt was made to develop a formula to quantify ‘stope risk’ from MRE metrics such as sample spacing, kriging efficiency and so on

WaihiÆs Cornish Pumphouse is located on the edge of town in a dynamic and changeable area where history affects the future. As in any successful project, ingenuity and team work have been significant factors in the planning and implementation of the buildingÆs relocation.   Work around the Pumphouse site commenced circa 1900 with preparation to sink the No 5 shaft. Construction of the pumphouse and the steam driven C pump was completed by 1904 with hints of what was to come evident in 1905 as the No5 Shaft collar had sunk 350mm in four years. By 1907 surface cracking developed over the Milking Cow cave area and in 1913 200 mm was cut off the main pumping rod as the ground was sinking at a rate of 25 mm per year.   In 1913 ground around No 6 shaft had subsided 600 mm.It was also the end of an era as steam gave way to hydroelectricity and electric pumps replaced the C Pump. C Pump was maintained as a backup from 1913 to 1929 and then finally scrapped. 25 years of underground caving operations removed approximately 400 000 cubic metres of ore leaving a 7 ha collapse crater that eventually became known as the mine lake.   On the edge of town a tension zone over the Royal Lode began to develop 50 m diameter chimney collapses as large scale blocks relaxed into unfilled stopes in the old Martha underground mine. After the 1999 collapse part of the main street was closed and after the 2001 collapse Hazard Zones were declared, more streets closed and areas evacuated and retired from residential use.   By 1984 the Pumphouse has approximately one degree of tilt and in 2002 tilt on the Pumphouse accelerated briefly and then settled down. Tilt accelerated again late in 2004 and a scoping study was initiated to define protection options for the pumphouse. The Martha Mining Licence requires Newmont to 'Take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the old Cornish Pumphouse adjacent to No5 shaft' and viable solutions needed to found.   Any work on the Pumphouse comes standard with a wide range of stakeholders, governing agencies and legal framework to consider. A lead-zinc flotation tailings sample containing silver from BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine has been characterised to understand occurrences of silver in the tailings by conventional elemental, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and size analyses followed by mineralogical analysis with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) software and the use of an adapted diagnostic leach process originally developed for gold containing materials.The tailings sample contained 67 g/t Ag, 1.8 per cent Pb and 0.52 per cent Zn. The XRD analysis showed that the sample consisted of 74 per cent silicates, nine per cent sulfides, 11 per cent magnetite and small amounts of other minerals such as fluorite, fluorapatite and rutile. The p80 and p50 of the sample were determined to be 106 µm and 38 µm, respectively. The silver distribution was high in the small size fraction with 52.1 per cent of the silver being in the -8 µm fraction. The silver minerals freibergite, acanthite, jamesonite, pyrargyrite and native silver were observed in the mineralogical analysis of the sample by SEM/MLA. The associations of the minerals were intricate and the occurrences of silver were complex. There were finely disseminated silver minerals and also coarser grains of silver minerals in composites with the host minerals. It was estimated that almost 50 per cent of the silver was contained in pyrargyrite, around 14 per cent as native silver and contained in acanthite, 12.5 per cent in galena and around ten per cent in freibergite and jamesonite.These composite particles and the type of the silver minerals present were expected to limit leaching efficiencies of the silver in hydrometallurgical processing. The diagnostic leach tests showed that around 50 per cent of the silver could be recovered by direct cyanidation and higher extractions could be achieved by more aggressive acidic systems.Cyanidation tests were conducted to confirm the findings of the diagnostic leach studies. The investigated cyanidation parameters were time (up to 48 hours), solid to liquid ratio (1:1 and 1:2), cyanide concentration (0.025 M, 0.5 M and 0.1 M) and particle size (p80 of 106 µm, 63 µm and 7.5 µm). The effects of oxygen and lead nitrate were also studied. The tests were conducted at atmospheric temperatures. The maximum silver recovery obtained was about 50 per cent for all the parameter ranges trialled except particle size. The decrease in particle size from 106 µm to 7.5 µm by fine grinding resulted in an increase in silver recoveries from 50 per cent up to approximately 82 per cent indicating that the liberation of the silver grains/minerals is one of the factors affecting the cyanidation recovery of silver in addition to the presence of refractory silver minerals not amenable to cyanidation.Low head grades of silver in the tailings and relatively low cyanidation recoveries of silver (without fine grinding) necessitate a thorough cost analysis for the cyanidation of the Cannington lead and zinc tailings to assess if cyanidation would be a suitable process option for the extraction of silver. Tests for the development of a metals recovery technology from samples of a Russian gold-bismuth deposit were carried out. Gold, silver and bismuth assay reported 5.6 g/t, 3.0 g/t and 0.08 per cent, respectively. Two flow sheet options were pilot plant tested: gravity/cyanidation of gravity tailings with subsequent flotation of cyanidation/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailings, and gravity/flotation concentration with cyanidation/CIP of concentrates. Option 1 results showed lower gold, silver and bismuth recoveries (81.3 per cent Au, 55 per cent Ag and 74.0 per cent Bi) due to low flotation efficiency for cyanidation tailings. Therefore, a flow sheet involving gravity/flotation concentration to produce bismuth-gold concentrates (0.8 per cent Bi) with subsequent cyanidation/CIP was recommended. Gold, silver and bismuth recoveries obtained by this method to the combined gravity/flotation concentrate were 90.2 per cent Au, 83.3 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi of the ore, respectively. Overall gold, silver and bismuth recoveries were 83.0 per cent Au, 40.5 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi, respectively. Gold and silver recoveries to the cathode precipitate were 92 per cent Au and 48.6 per cent Ag (per operation). Reagents consumed for flotation were 0.1 kg lead acetate/t ore, 0.4 kg butyl xanthate/t ore, 0.2 kg T-80 frother/t ore, 0.02 kg sodium hexametaphosphate/t ore, 0.15 kg copper sulfate/t ore. Reagents consumption for cyanidation was 0.42 - 0.48 kg NaCN/t ore and 0.2 kg CaO/t ore. It was recommended to deliver bismuth concentrates after hydrometallurgical treatment to a smelter. Overall bismuth recovery including bismuth recovery achieved by pyrometallurgy was 60.0 per cent. However, it was obvious that delivery of bismuth concentrates to a smelter and their commercial treatment would be very expensive due to relatively high mass pull of bismuth concentrates (7.6 per cent of the ore weight). For this reason, thiourea leaching and hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation/CIP were investigated as alternatives to cyanide leaching. These two alternatives were proposed to enable optimal recovery of valuable metals from concentrates on-site. Recoveries obtained by thiourea leaching were 91.2 per cent Au, 90.5 - 91.9 per cent Bi and 77.0 - 78.1 per cent Ag. However, that method required considerable capital and operating costs. As an alternative, hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation was investigated. Test results showed improved gold, bismuth and silver recoveries, which were 94 - 95.9 Au per cent, 94 - 96 Bi per cent and 76 - 78 Ag per cent, respectively. Hydrochloric acid consumption was 100 kg/t concentrate or 7.6 kg/t ore. Current efficiency during electrowinning was about eight to 12 per cent. A recommended flow sheet involving hydrochloric acid leaching of concentrates, electrowinning of bismuth from solutions, recycling solutions after electrowinning and cyanidation of hydrochloric acid leaching cakes is described. Overall recoveries achieved by the proposed flow sheet were as follows: 84.8 - 86.5 Au per cent, 75.8 - 76.9 Bi per cent and 63.2 - 64.9 Ag per cent. Based on results from these tests, initial data for a bankable feasibility study and plant designing were developed.

The aim of this paper is to present an innovative method to help delineate potential target volumes for haematite-goethite mineralisation as opposed to more magnetic ores. This is achieved through interpretation and modelling (2.5D and 3D inversions) of ground magnetics and gravity surveys over the Koolanooka South prospect in Western Australia. The targets are assumed to be dense and weakly magnetic and hosted within banded iron formation (BIF) horizons. Geophysical interpretation (2D map) was performed using a variety of processed magnetic and gravity images (Betts et al, 2007) to determine the distribution of lithologies, to understand the structural architecture and to map out any anomalous areas of excess density (possibly indicating goethite alteration). The created geological map is used to build geological cross-sections (geometrically consistent) that were modelled (in 2.5 D) against both potential field datasets. The crosssections are consequently used as the framework to build a 3D geological model. The model defines 3D volumes of rocks including several BIF horizons. The distribution of densities and magnetic susceptibilities of the BIFs is inverted within the GOCAD«-VPmg environment to reduce the misfit between the response of the model and the observed gravity and magnetics. By combining the results of both petrophysical property distribution it is possible to map out (using classical GIS type queries in 3D) volumes of higher density and lower magnetic susceptibility.

The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

A novel fracture-plane control blasting technique with particular application in wall-control blasts in mines employing medium to large diameter boreholes is described. It consists of a string of nested holes, each nest consisting of a large diameter charge-hole flanked on either side by a small diameter satellite hole. Each nest is shown to be an analog of a pressurized hole with diametral notches along its length. This 'equivalent-notched' hole concept for generating controlled fractures along preferred directions has been successfully investigated in the laboratory and in the field. The technique has been used to generate controlled fractures on a quarry bench in highly jointed limestone. The resulting blasts with a 250 mm diameter central charge-hole and 50-75 mm satellite holes show that two nests of such holes almost 5 m apart could be joined by a single co-linear fracture. The design range of diameter ratio between charge-hole and satellite hole is 3 to 6 and spacing is 3 to 5 charge-hole radii. With careful matching of explosives and decoupling, and combination of diameter ratio and spacing, it would be possible to connect two nests of such holes more than 20 charge diameters apart by a single controlled fracture plane. The relative merits of the technique against existing wall-control blasts are discussed, and guidelines for practical fracture-plane control blast designs are discussed.

The Kibali Gold Mine is currently comprised of several open pits, a 3.5 Mtpa underground mine and a 7.5 Mtpa processing plant. Development of the underground operation commenced in December 2012, with initial access established through twin surface declines, followed by the commencement of a blind sink 8 m diameter rock hoist shaft in March 2013. Stope production started in December 2014 with ore and waste trucked to surface. The 755 m deep blind shaft sink was completed in August 2015 together with the cutting and equipping of three main station levels. Two of these levels provide access for the establishment of the underground materials handling system as well as the main dewatering system for the mine. This paper covers the process of determining the optimal location of the Kibali hoisting shaft relative to project-specific critical factors, and then focuses on the design and implementation journey associated with the off-shaft development that essentially encompasses the Material Handling System (MHS) for the mine. The journey starts from the findings of the previous owners Feasibility Study (FS), a subsequent Optimised FS, followed by detailed engineering through to implementation. It was identified during implementation that a significant change in the designed off-shaft layout was required following detailed underground geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations. In addition, the paper provides details on the MHS performance since commissioning to steady state, and on key learnings relating to the overall project process.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. The nickel exploration boom of the late-1960s and early-1970s led to the discovery of numerous komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide deposits, associated with variably serpentinised bodies of olivine-rich cumulates. Subsequent research has shown the importance of volcanological processes to understanding the genesis of these deposits. Crucial developments have come through consideration of the fluid dynamics of magmas and magma-crystal mixtures, through observation of the dynamics and geometry of modern day basaltic lava flows, through application of theory and experimentation on the kinetics of crystal growth from magmas, and most importantly from extensive detailed field mapping of komatiitic sequences in the Yilgarn Block and elsewhere. From these studies has emerged a new integrated view of the volcanological setting of komatiite-hosted deposits, and a recognition that a complete continuum of deposit types exists. Nevertheless, komatiite associated magmatic nickel deposits generally fall into two overall types based on the nature of the sulphide ore. In the first type the bulk of the ore is either massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide or a variable mixture of massive sulphide and an ore characterised by olivine crystals in a continuous matrix of sulphide occupying between 30 and 75 per cent by volume of the rock (called Matrix Ore). Nickel grades of massive sulphide ore range from 2 - 20 wt% and those of the matrix ore generally fall in the range 1 - 5 wt% (average 2.5 wt%) Ni/Cu ratios of the sulphide fraction are generally >10.

The issue of fine coal and tailings dewatering has become of increasing concern to many coal preparation operators, both in Australia and overseas due to a variety of factors. Increasing mechanisation and mining of thinner seams over the past decades has resulted in an increasing amount of fines generation while increasing international trade in coal and tighter environmental constraints on tailings disposal have resulted in the production of these same fines to be an increasing problem. However, technology to date has not always been able to supply a cost-effective solution to the handling of these fines in an efficient and environmentally benign manner. This paper will review the key issues associated with the dewatering of fine coal and tailings, will describe the major current practices and constraints, and finally will indicate alternative technologies that may have to be considered in the near future. For the purpose of this paper, "fine" coal is described as that material less than 0.5 mm in diameter (as this is the most common cutpoint between various plant circuits in Australian practice), although the technological constraints are very much dependent upon the fraction less than 45 micron. The amount of minus 0.5 mm material fed to plants varies, depending upon the type of coal and mining operation, but in Australia may range from less than ten per cent to greater than 30 per cent of the feed in higher rank coals.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.
