As you are all aware, the theme of this con- ference is "International Resources Management". The subject matter of this particular session is "the mineral equation". Looking down the sub- ject matters and individual papers to be presented by other speakers in other sessions over the course of the conference, each particular item scheduled is in fact one of the variables that form an integral part of the total and complex mineral equation. Questions of reserves and resources as related to consumption must be viewed in the light of all those variables. Policy decisions taken by Government and eventually industry in these various fields will in themselves have their own impact on the defining of resources, and their ultimate availability to meet the needs of society by way of consumption. Undoubtedly, by the close of this conference, those of us in attendance will be better informed on the problems that confront the international minerals industry in the years ahead. Hopefully, we will have a better understanding of the views and philosophies of the wide range of participants in the industry-Government, private enterprise, and individuals who ultimately through their per- sonal aspirations in respect of their day to day needs will provide the final determinant as to the scope of the minerals industry.

The behaviour of chalcopyrite and pyrite in the rougher-scavenger and regrind-retreatment circuits in the Warrego concentrator is discussed. The effects of change in xanthate addition on the separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite is described. The effect of the regrind mill on the (flotation rate of particles containing chalcopyrite and pyrite is discussed with particular reference to the importance of removing sub-mesh particles from the feed to the regrind mill.

The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. Nickel, having a slightly greater affinity for oxygen than has lead, would be expected to be oxidized and slagged readily, and would not be expected to appear in the metal phase (lead button) to any appreciable extent. The story of the rise, progress, and development of our modern railway system is a long but an exceedingly interesting one. The phases it has passed through, the discussions that have arisen from time to time on the most economic modes of construction and working, and the final result these various discussions have led to, are full of importance and interest to the engineer. It is not my intention to deal historically with the subject. I desire simply to speak to the requirements of the hour in Australia. It will not be disputed, I think, that these colonies have reached a point in railway construction and management when, if additional lines to any extent are still to be built, a different principle must be adopted. There are yet large tracts and areas of country to be tapped by the rail and the locomotive, which for years to come must remain untouched if the same expensive gauges and modes of construction are continued. We have yet to see clearly the necessity of introducing a system of light lines that will pay their own way and at the same time augment the traffic of our main lines. This question really no longer remains an unsolved problem. It lies, in a few words, in the acceptance of the, narrowest gauge and the simplest mode of construction that can constitute a pacticable railway. I fear it is hopeless to suggest that private companies should be legally permitted to construct such lines. It seems as if it were next to impossible to move official authorities to enter upon the construction of lines on this principle. It is, all the same an undoubted fact that if private companies could obtain Acts of Parliament, that in several of the colonies a new impetus would be given to railway construction.I may point out that not only has the principle of narrow gauge light railways been adopted in India but private companies are obtaining power to build them. Outside of :England many narrow gauge lines have been made, and in France, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden they have been highly successful.

This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main "minerals" - gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone.The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production.The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10,000,000,000 per year.The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation.Finally there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

In this paper, the author briefly introduces the resource characteristics of Chinese iron ore, as well as the present increasing market demand for iron concentrate. The SHP-3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is used to separate complicated weak-magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-3200 HIMS, including modifying the angle of magnetic polar from 90¦ to 83¦, cooling the exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing equipment to wash off magnetic particles and adjusting the tooth-space of the matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm to enhance the recovery of fine particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In order to improve the recovery of difficult-separated iron, the film-magnetic separation technique is applied into the HIMS and a new LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically. A flowing-film feeder is also added and the feed mouth is modified to make a slurry flow formed in the form of film along the wall of matrix. The microstructure and dissemination character of the mineral particles is studied, and the specific susceptibility of the primary minerals is measured. Then the distributive characteristics of a magnetic field for the separator with film-magnetic technique and the motion of particles in the process of separation are all analysed. By introducing the film-magnetic separation technique to SHP-Φ700 HIMS, the recovery of iron can be raised from 69.45 per cent to 76.07 - 78.96 per cent with the similar grade of concentrates of iron. Such an increase of 9.51 per cent in the recovery also shows that it is feasible for such film-magnetic separation technique to be applied into HIMS.

The concentrator plant of Fahrica Mine, that started production in 1977, was using nine Jones wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) of the standard type DP 317 with a 1.5 mm gap width for the production of pelletfeed concentrate. These WHIMS units were operating in parallel with a feed rate of 110 t per hour, with about 47 per cent Fe in the feed, and with a maximum of only 0.8 per cent magnetite. The field strength was about 1.2 Tesla. From 1986, the mine has adapted its production facilities to mine and concentrate larger amounts of lowgrade itabintes to maximise the use of the available iron ore reserves. An increase of up to three per cent magnetite in the magnetic separator feed, resulted in a reduction of capacity. This was due to partial clogging of the separation boxes at high field intensities, which were required for the recovery of the very fine hematite. Even by lowering the feed rate and the field intensity the problem could not be resolved. After extensive testwork in a pilot plant, with a Jones separator model DI' 90, the commercial WHIMS plant was modified into a two stage process using the existing nine Jones separators. The gap of the first stage with four machines was increased to a width of 3.5 mm, corresponding to a maximum field intensity of 0.7 Tesla. This first 'medium intensity scalping stage' is followed by a second 'real' high intensity WHIMS step with five machines operating at the original settings with 1.5 mm gap width and 1.0 Testa maximum field intensity. Feed rates of up to 320 tons per hour in the first and up to 240 tons per hour in the second stage could be achieved. The design concept of the concentrator at Fabrica mine is described using the old and new flowsheets. Details of the pilot plant testwork as well as actual performance data of the new plant section are presented.

Remnants of Plio-Pleistocene hot spring systems in Northland, New Zealand contain sulfide minerals, principally pyrite, marcasite and cinnabar. The climate is warm temperate to subtropical, with up to 3 m of rainfall per annum, and rocks are deeply weathered. Decomposition of the iron sulfides in natural outcrops and human excavations results in acid rock drainage with pH typically between 2 and 5, and locally down to pH 1. Deeply weathered basement greywacke is clay-rich and has negligible neutralisation capacity. Some overlying volcanic flows have resisted weathering, and pH is kept near neutral by relict secondary calcite in small areas. Natural rainforest soils commonly have pH between 4 and 5 over mineralised and unmineralised greywacke. Mineralised zones are enriched in arsenic, which occurs in solid solution (up to 1 wt per cent) in sulfides and phosphate minerals. Mercury also occurs in solid solution in some of these minerals, as well as in cinnabar. Base metals are present in low (background) concentrations only. Decomposition of the iron sulfides and phosphates releases the solid solution arsenic and mercury into the acid rock drainage solutions. Arsenic is readily adsorbed on to iron oxyhydroxides formed in acid rock drainage situations, and can be effectively removed from the biosphere. However, this arsenic is released back into the environment if the pH rises, as adsorbed oxyanions become less strongly bound and are displaced by hydroxyl ions. Behaviour of dissolved mercury is similar to that of arsenic but less well understood in these settings. Both arsenic and mercury are readily leached into pH 6 solutions from solid material collected from acid rock drainage sites. These observations suggest that neutralisation of acid rock drainage sites is undesirable in this setting, as arsenic and mercury will become more mobile in the environment. The naturally low pH of 4 to 5 of the forest floor, or even lower pH of natural acid rock drainage, is a preferable management option.

A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.

Kumba Iron OreÆs Sishen Mine is one of the worldÆs largest iron ore mining operations situated in the Northern Cape, South Africa. It produces 29 million tonnes of iron ore products per annum using a dense medium separation (DMS) beneficiation process. Kumba is currently commissioning the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP) which will produce a further 13 Mtpa product through a jigging beneficiation process. The products from the Sishen Mine are highly sought after and consumed by domestic and various European and Asian customers. During beneficiation iron ore slimes are generated and discarded as waste material to the slimes dams. A study was initiated in 2005 to investigate processes to beneficiate these slimes to saleable products û prompted by the current high demand for iron ore products and the high grade in the Sishen slimes thickener underflow of approximately 54 per cent Fe. Initial laboratory scale test work indicated that a 66.5 per cent Fe iron ore concentrate could be produced from the Sishen slimes thickener underflow through a process of classification, two stage wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and five stage flotation. This process, however, did not produce the desired results during pilot plant testing and numerous alternative process routes were investigated. The process that did achieve the desired product grade of 66.5 per cent Fe at economically feasible product yields consisted of two stage WHIMS using SLON magnetic separators. Results achieved indicate that the thickener underflow slimes can be upgraded from 54 per cent Fe to 66.5 per cent Fe at a product yield of ca. 40 per cent. Product yield could be increased through the further beneficiation of the SLON tails. The Sishen slimes thickener underflow production rate is ca. 3 Mtpa û resulting in a potential concentrate production of ca. 1.2 Mtpa. The slimes concentrate will be fed to a pelletising plant that will produce 66 per cent Fe pellets destined for domestic and or export markets.

The new environmental legislation of 1986 was left incomplete and to date remains so. The 'missing' process by which environmental consideration should be applied was never embodied in law and has predisposition to a wide interpretation. The Resource Statutes which govern land use and development place demands on the environmental process without that definition. The Resource Statutes are themselves under review by Government. There is a new Government Department of Conservation. It is still in its early days and facing a challenge to compose its role as a steward over large tracts of land holding significant marketable resources, animal, vegetable, mineral, and abstract. It has also taken over numerous consent and advocacy roles in legislation beyond its own empowering Act. Enter the mining company, anxious if not able to get an easy passage for consents to prospect and mine, then at least to have a clear path to tread to get there, within a fixed time period. Whichever options appear available to process environmental approvals, public participation is that being favoured most by the regulatory bodies. Where a public notification of consent applications is mandatory, public participation should lead to the fastest track available.

The 1999 edition of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the æJORC CodeÆ) became effective in September 1999 and is the latest revision of a Code which was originally issued in 1989, but which has an ancestry dating back to the first JORC report released in 1972. The modifications introduced in 1999, which are briefly discussed in this paper, substantially improved the document, but did not materially alter the fundamentals of the Code, these being the Mineral Resource/Ore Reserve classification framework and terminology, and the requirements and guidelines for public reporting of Resources and Reserves. Codes or guides similar to the JORC Code exist or are under development in other countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. It is pleasing to note that the 1999 JORC Code has been used as a model by these countries in developing their latest standards, and has been a major influence in the formulating of international reporting standards. The JORC Code is primarily a document covering the reporting of the results of mining companiesÆ activities to the public. However, mining geologists are interested in practical assistance and guidance in carrying out their duties. The JORC Code provides this in four ways. It establishes a framework within which those preparing and publicly reporting Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates must operate, by setting standards for the classification and reporting of Resources and Reserves and for qualifications of Competent Persons. It establishes the division of responsibility between the companyÆs Board of Directors and Competent Persons with respect to the preparation and reporting of Resources and Reserves, and empowers Competent Persons to materially influence how their Resource/Reserve estimates are reported to the public. It provides an extensive, detailed and practical check list of criteria to be taken into account in the preparation of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates. Finally, it provides a strong measure of due diligence protection in the event of litigation if it is followed with diligence and honesty.

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Increasing the powder factor form 1650 gr/m3 to 2480 gr/m3 by changing the blast pattern design showed that mill throughputs increase five per cent to 30 per cent for the new pattern.CITATION:Hakami, A, Mansouri, H, Ebrahimi Farsangi, M A, Dehghan, M R and Faramarzi, F, 2015. The stirred mill is regarded as one of the most efficient devices for micronising materials and has come to be actively used for preparation of fine particles. Recently, the demand for ultrafine particles was increased in many kinds of industries. In this paper, autogenous grinding to get submicron particles based on mutual friction feed material has been carried out using a stirred mill. The mill used was made of stainless steel and its volume was about 5.5 litres, and has 12 impeller blades. Sample used was limestone. In the present work, two operating parameters such as stirring speed and feed size of limestone were considered. The ground products were sieved in the size range from feed size to 325 mesh (45 lun), and from 45 to 0.17 pm the size distributions were measured by a laser diffraction and scattering method. The progress of grinding was evaluated by the increasing amount of submicron particles in products. As a result, the rotational speed of impeller with the minimum energy consumption to produce submicron particles was observed. It was found that the autogenous grinding with a stirred mill is an effective method for producing submicronized limestone.
