Ernest Henry Mining commenced operations on its copper-gold project in August 1997, some two months ahead of schedule and ten per cent ($35 million) under budget. The mine is located in the highly prospective Mount Isa/Cloncurry mineral district in north-west Queensland, approximately 38 km north-east of Cloncurry. The developer and operator of the project is Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd (EHM), an incorporated joint venture between MIM Holdings Limited (51 per cent) and Savage Resources Limited (49 per cent). The deposit is located approximately 40 km north of Cloncurry in North West Queensland and lies beneath a featureless black soil plain with no significant creeks or gullies cutting across the site. Vegetation is sparse and consists essentially of Mitchell grass with occasional low shrubs and trees. Up to nine million tonnes of ore and over 43 million tonnes of waste will be extracted each year from an open pit operation to produce approximately 350 000 tonnes of concentrate when in full production.

Mining companies around the world are seeking methods to coordinate operations between the mine and the concentrator to achieve an overall improvement in enterprise performance. In several instances very significant increases in productivity (more than 20 per cent) and profitability (more than $US 10M per annum) have resulted from such efforts. The key to realising these large benefits has for the most part arisen from improved communication between mining operations and plant operations personnel and the judicious use of new tools to evaluate alternatives for improvement and to minimise the risk of implementation. This paper presents a systematic approach to mine-to-mill optimisation . The importance of systemic thinking and systems optimisation methodologies is emphasised. New tools for evaluating operational performance are discussed. Recently reported benefits are summarised. Finally current research is discussed and projections for the future are given.

The application of conventional dust control systems in British Coal mines has considerably reduced the incidence of pneumoconiosis. A number of new techniques have been developed involving extraction close to the cutting heads of mining machines which will be capable of controlling airborne dust with the greater intensity of production necessary in the present economic climate.

Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

Off-gas handling systems are a critical component of modern metallurgical furnaces and typically represent as much as 50 per cent of the total installed smelter capital cost. Inadequate off-gas system performance, due to insufficient exhaust flow or excess maintenance downtime, can present a serious process bottleneck and limit smelter production rate. Therefore, it is essential that the relevant performance issues are fully understood and considered in the design of these systems, particularly when combustibles produced within the furnace must be combusted or handled in the off-gas system. This paper examines the requirements, design issues, and conceptual design process for state-of-the-art postcombustion off-gas systems. The relevant design considerations of safety, environment, energy consumption, and maintenance are presented, and the relative importance of these key issues are compared and discussed. The benefits of using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling in the design process at the conceptual design stage are also demonstrated. Finally, the design basis and performance of a recent Hatch-engineered system currently in operation is evaluated.

Flotation is the one of the most used techniques for the mineral separation of non-ferrous ores worldwide. However, the increase of the complexness along with the decrease of ores liberation sizes ought to become important challenges for mineral processing, including flotation. It now appears necessary to better understand the fundamentals of the flotation process, particularly the adsorption of flotation reagents at the liquid/mineral interfaces, to propose further improvements. Flotation relies on different phenomena: surfactants adsorption, on one hand, and collision, adhesion, and transport of particles with bubbles, on the other hand. For acknowledging the reagents adsorption mechanisms, molecular modelling tools borrowed from chemical and material sciences, are increasingly used. Atomistic simulations were successfully applied to study the flotation reagents interaction with various mineral surfaces, eg of two common minerals from iron ores, kaolinite, and magnetite surfaces, or with fluorite surface, a tungsten ores common gangue mineral.

Mineral froth pumping utilising centrifugal slurry pumps is a major engineering challenge for both the end users and pump manufacturers. In the batch phase disengagement test, an organic and an aqueous phase are mixed together for a known period to produce a dispersion which may be either organic continuous (aqueous phase droplets) or aqueous continuous (organic phase droplets). The continuity of the dis- persion will depend upon the method of init- iating the dispersion, the conditions under which the system is operating, such as temper- ature and impeller speed, and the properties of the liquids, such as viscosity, inter- facial tension and solute content. Once the dispersion has been agitated for the required period, the agitator is turned off and the position of the coalescence interface and the sedimentation interface recorded as a function of time. This will produce a plot similar to Figure 1, where the overall dir- ection of travel of the droplets of dispersed phase is away from the sedimentation inter- face and towards the coalescence interface where the droplets coalesce with the homophase.

The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

Pyrrhotite is pyrophoric when in a finely divided form. The problems of disposing of large quantities of finely divided pyrrhotite separated out by metallurgical processing from ore are formidable. In the case of an underground mine, a solution to the problem of disposal is to place the pyrrhotite in the stoped out areas and seal from any air supply. Further, the pyrrhotite could be diluted with tailings which would reduce the possibility of combust- ion. Several enquiries to various centres and authorities have shown that the products of the slow oxidation of pyrrhotite with moisture present can cement an inert matrix into a stable fill similar in physical prop- erties to fill stabilised with Portland cement. Stabilised fill can be used to advan tage with a suitable mining method to provide high recovery. The investigation demonstrated that air and 15% w/w water must be present for the fill to harden and that the sizing of the particles is a critical factor in drainage of a hydraul- ically placed fill and subsequent even harden- ing of the fill in a stope. With the materials used in the experiments in which the - 51 micron component of the tailings had been dis- carded, an optimum mix was found to contain 4:1 tailings/slag ratio and an overall pyrr hotite concentration of 8% (all proportion by weight). Approximately 34 days after drain- age to 15% moisture in natural air flow condit- ions, an unconfined compressive strength of 1.862 MPa was attained. A subsequent experi- ment was conducted with a sample of optimum mix in a pipe one metre long in forced air flow conditions. At a superficial velocity of 3.Om per hour the mix required 155 hours to harden to 1.862 MPa after drainage to 15% w/w moisture content. The pressure drop bet- ween the top and bottom of the mix in the pipe remained constant at 9 KPa/metre length. This result suggests that forced air flow conditions will increase the rate of hardening. No dangerous effluents were detected in the course of the experiments which could affect mine equipment or personnel.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

The concentrator at Bougainville Copper Limited has an annual throughput of 48.2 million tonnes/year producing approximately 175,000 tonnes copper, 16.1 tonnes gold, and 50 tonnes silver. Conventional three stage crushing and screening are used to reduce run of mine ore to an average product d80 size of 6.7mm. The primary objective of the crush- ing plant is to provide a continuous supply of ore to the 12 primary grind- ing mills via an intermediate 300,000 tonnes capacity stockpile. Since ball mill performance improves with decreasing mill feed size, the crushing plant continually strives to produce the finest possible product for mill- ing. This has been achieved by increasing plant availability and total installed power, and improving crusher manganese liner life, screen cloth life, and plant operating practices. A recent innovation was the installa- tion of a 35 million tonnes/year preconcentration screening plant in Janu- ary 1987 to recover high grade fines from low grade run of mine ore types in which the mineralisation occurs preferentially along fracture planes in the parent rock.

The Mineral Research Centre is located at Perth in the suburb of Waterford, adjacent to Curtin University of Technology and within a Technology Precinct which includes Technology Park. The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.

Paddington processing plant is located approximately 30 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Menzies Highway and is owned by Placer Dome Asia Pacific. First mining was from the Paddington Pit, but in subsequent years the plant has had a history of treating ores from a large number of sources, and has used several different methods to reconcile mining and mill production. Reconciliations are necessary to keep a check on the quality control of mining and grade control processÆs. There is a need to be able to identify and resolve issues that will affect the profitability of the organisation quickly. They are also used to check the quality of the resource/reserve statements, and allow the accurate and timely payment of royalties to stakeholders. During the formation of the Kalgoorlie West operations when Delta Gold Limited and Goldfields Limited merged in 2001, the complexity of reconciliations increased dramatically. The expansion of the scope of reconciliations to include two mills, four underground mines and seven open pits, and ore from one deposit to both mills meant that a revised strategy was essential. A variety of issues have arisen over the years with discrepancies occurring when reconciling both tonnes and grade. There are many ways to approach reconciliations, and in recent times these philosophies have been widely debated on site. A consistent and logical approach that takes into account many different sources of ore, as well as different methods of delivery to the Run of Mine stockpiles is therefore necessary. This would standardise the different approaches taken by the various operations that combined to form Kalgoorlie west. The new method reconciles mill production back to the individual ore sources, and produces reconciled-mined tonnes and grade based on the mill throughput and the change in stockpiles. There will generally be a small discrepancy between the claimed mined tonnes produced (and grades) and the mill production. This needs to be highlighted to the operations concerned if it considered unacceptably large. Paddington mill over the last few years has had up to ten sources of ore each year, and up to 15 different stockpiles being processed during each month from those various pits. This combined with the need for a blended oxide/fresh feed, whilst striving to deliver a consistent (grade and hardness) product to the mill, has meant that reconciliations have been very difficult.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a "telescoped" overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 401an length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation. A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.
