Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. ( The central part of the Gippsland Basin is surrounded by existing major Petroleum accumulations and although six exploration wells have been drilled in the area, none are significant petroleum discoveries. Post drilling analyses indicate that the wells were drilled off structure due to the presence of high-velocity Miocene channels. These channels contain carbonates of significantly higher interval velocity than the surrounding sediments. Problems with seismic interpretation were thus encountered in the development of prospects in the central part of the Gippsland Basin as part of a BMR prospectivity study. The seismic interpretation problems associated with the Miocene channels are two-way time pull-ups at the underlying top of Latrobe Group and deeper levels on the seismic sections. Interpreted seismic sections passing through some of the exploration wells and the Miocene channels are presented to illustrate the configurations of these channels and the pullup effect associated with them. Two different methods of depth conversion were applied, one for the area below the high velocity channels and the other for the area away from the channel. The application of these two methods of depth conversion were found to be reasonably successful in correcting for the pull-ups caused by the high velocity Miocene channels. Mapping of the events near the top of Latrobe Group and near Base Lower L balmei seismic horizons has led to the identification of several potential structural closures. Further exploration efforts are necessary in this area to test these closures.

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. While more work is required to stretch the mill operating envelope coupled with other circuit additions to improve liberation of fine diamonds at minimum capital expenditure, the mill has, to date, performed to its billing.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, Ndlovu, G N and Sikwa, N A, 2013. The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread tholeiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17 - 16 Ma. The north- to north-northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcanotectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma. At about 14.3 Ma and continuing to approximately 12.6 Ma the Oregon-Idaho graben began to break up into subbasins that were bounded by intragraben fault zones. The break up was accompanied by a change to calc-alkaline volcanism that persisted within the Oregon-Idaho graben until 8.1 Ma, approximately 2.5 million years after subsidence within the graben ceased. Three intragraben fault zones have been identified and a fourth is inferred. The easternmost, the Devils Gate fault zone, coincides with the magmatic axis of the graben at approximately 14.3 Ma. By approximately 13.5 Ma the magmatic axis had shifted to the west along the Dry Creek Buttes and Wall Rock Ridge fault zones. A diffuse magmatic axis developed at approximately 12 Ma farther to the west where the fourth intragraben fault zone is inferred. In addition to serving as conduits for the ascent of basalt, basaltic andesite, rhyodacite, and rhyolite magmas, the zones focused the discharge of large geothermal systems. The intragraben fault zones display a common evolutionary pattern. The 2 to 3 km-wide zones initially control the distribution of facies in volcaniclastic sediments and the location of basalt hydrovolcanic vents. During this stage, the fault zones may have had no surface expression other than a low elevation change on a relatively low-relief landscape. As relief developed by continued deformation along the fault zones, strike-length of individual faults increased and weakly consolidated volcaniclastic sediments, silicified sediments and hot-spring sinter, and palagonite were eroded from the uplifted blocks and deposited in neighboring subbasins. It is during this stage that the large hot-spring precious-metals bearing prospects evolved. Displacements of over 150 m on a few faults within the zones and possible reversal of the sense of displacement along the zones occurred in this final stage of development. Locally, the fault zones were remobilised during the subsidence of the cross-cutting western Snake River plain. The intragraben fault zones within the Oregon-Idaho graben illustrate the relations among syntectonic volcanism and sedimentation and the evolution of geothermal systems within continental rift systems.

A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.

In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.

A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

The objectives of this paper are to introduce the International Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works and to illustrate to the participants of the 13th Australian Tunnelling Conference 2008 how the insurance industry would like to see the future of tunnelling insurance. Tunnel construction projects have suffered large losses over the years as can be shown from various loss examples and a list of major losses over the last ten to 15 years. Since the consequences of insufficient risk control had to be borne by insurers, these losses have heightened the need for improved and adequate risk management measures so that insurance cover can also in future be provided for this hazardous industry sector. Observations are made as regards to the prevailing trends in the tunnelling industry, which contribute to the increase in risk and have adverse consequences for the insurance industry. To find a solution to this dilemma various options are examined with the suggestion of a Joint Code of Practice for Tunnel Works being agreed by all stakeholders, which would become essential to secure future insurance protection for such project work. The British Tunnelling Society has, in cooperation with the Association of British Insurers, developed such a code, which the International Tunnelling Insurance Group has now adopted for global application in international markets. The content and concept of this code is explained to establish a framework of understanding and applied risk management principles for tunnel works. This initiative also has the support of the International Tunnelling Association and the International Association of Engineering Insurers. The international application of this new code is demonstrated with a few examples, which also includes Australian projects. It is the aim that this code forms in future part of the insurance coverage for tunnelling works in order to put this risk segment on a more sustainable basis. For that reason the insurance industry is seeking the support of all stakeholders of tunnelling construction projects.

The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.
