Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

Enterprise Optimisation is a methodology for increasing the value of mining and mineral processing operations through better long-term planning decisions. It involves a combination of ten mechanisms which deal with decisions at different stages of the value chain. A decision made at any point in the chain potentially affects the decision for all other points in the chain. The key, therefore, is to optimise them simultaneously. The Enterprise Optimisation approach can be shown to produce increases of five per cent to 35 per cent or more in net present value (NPV), even when several optimisation methods have already been applied. This paper steps through an example case study, illustrating the effect of each mechanism and how they can work together to develop greatly improved results. This example results in a series of counter-intuitive outcomes, which challenges conventional management practices and typical organisational objectives based on organisational silos.

Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

With the launch of Immersive Technologies' next generation of Advanced Equipment Simulators for the mining industry, correlating and influencing safety, productivity and maintenance with operator competency improvements is now made even more effective. In early 2008, Immersive assembled a project team to investigate the potential linkages between operator competency and performance. Advanced Equipment Simulator Users with a range of sophistication were interviewed and consulted. The result was new and enhanced 'value realisation' programs to directly assist mine sites to deliver the expected return on investment (ROI) from simulators and operator competency development. In just over one year, 29 mine sites around the world have benefited from 34 completed programs. Case studies have been compiled to demonstrate the impact of the implementation of this approach, including at the following operations: Anglo Coal - Callide (Australia), Freeport McMoRAN - Grasburg (Indonesia), Equinox Minerals - Lumwana (Zambia), Peabody Energy - Cabllo (USA), and Xstrata - Lomas Bayas (Chile). Significant performance improvements have been achieved including: reductions of 47 per cent in gear shifting and 37 per cent in over speed errors, improvements of 68 per cent in park break errors and 12 per cent in spotting time, and increase of 54 per cent in passing emergency fire handling competency tests. This presentation draws on these case studies to clearly demonstrate the linkage between improved operator competency through the implementation of training programs tailored around Advanced Equipment Simulators and production performace measured by a range of standard metrics at mines around the world.

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

Titanium (ilmenite) concentrate was extracted from a New Zealandilmeno-magnetite deposit. Tailings from the existing processing line at the Waikato North Head ironsand concentration plant were used as a raw material feed. The titanium bearing mineral extracted was defined as intergrowths of ilmenite and hematite in the size range below 150 um. The Owen-Honda equation was used to determine the conditions forilmenite/hematite magnetic separation. Three distinct regions of magnetic field strength for the mineral separation have been defined. Theoretical estimates from this calculation have been confirmed experimentally. Ilmenite concentrate was obtained using medium field magnetic andelectrostatic separation. The final material contains 40.6 - 42 per cent TiO2 and 39.1 - 39.8 per cent Fe (total). The actual yield from extraction was about seven per cent of the Zircon, leucoxene and monazite were found as byproducts of thetitanium concentration process. Preliminary experiments have shown the viability of industrial zircon benefication.

The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

Epithermal gold is hosted by late Middle Miocene Okiduse Volcanics on Woodlark Island. Dating of associated alteration minerals indicate mineralisation to be broadly contemporaneous with volcanism (12.2 - 12.5 m.y.) and is probably related to subduction of the Solomon Sea plate along the Trobriand Trench. Mineralisation is polymetallic and structurally controlled. Pyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite occur in steeply dipping fracture zones and/or hydrothermal breccia bodies associated with mixed clay-pyrite alteration envelopes. These envelopes occur within a terrane of regionally propylitised high-K, calc-alkaline andesites and related epizonal subvolcanics. Gangue minerals include quartz, calcite, dolomite and minor anhydrite. High level advanced argillic alteration and siliceous cap rocks are not present but may have been eroded off the top of the system. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data suggest that the carbonates and paragenetically associated auriferous base metal sulphides probably deposited from an isotopically evolved (+8%. 180) reduced hydrothermal fluid sourced from underlying sedimentary rocks. The fluid was predominantly of low salinity (0-4 wt % NaCl equivalent) and had a temperature of about 270¦C at the time of boiling and mineral deposition.

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. A number of examples illustrate the use of the new advances and a final example indicates the development of risk analysis curves in the coupling of sampling precision to sale of a commodity.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Bourgeois, F S, 2015. This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

The design of a mine should aim to optimise the market value by maximising revenues whilst minimising costs. In open pit mining, the nature of the extraction technique translates this objective into the maximum recovery of reserves while minimising waste extraction subject to technical, economical and safety constraints. Since the introduction by Lerchs and Grossman, in 1965, of a model that is now considered a classic in the area, open pit design has reached a level of maturity and acceptance by industry. These models are being used on a regular basis by designers and planners.This paper proposes a new alternative model for open pit design. It is based on genetic algorithms (GA) and exploits a reduction of the number of decision variables of the more traditional techniques. The novel approach provides more flexibility than traditional models; it can also be extended to consider planning problems that traditional open pit design models are not capable of handling. The algorithm has been designed for two dimensional problems and tested in a simple instance. The results obtained in this simple test are encouraging and are a good supporting argument for the development of a GA model capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) instances. The model presented in this paper is just a first step towards a full GA to solve the pit design problem and it is believed that novel tools like the one presented herein could become great allies in tackling challenging problems in open pit design, an illustration of such a challenging problem is presented and discussed.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. The paper argues that at near peak solar illumination, a system for field deployment at the required sensitivity is viable using only commercial off-the-shelf components.CITATION:Job, A T, Edgar, M L and McAree, P R, 2017.
