THE wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Mont., are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte, hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 ½ in. rope. 5 main hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 6 shafts using 1 1/8 in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 1 1/8 in. rope. 15 shafts using 1 in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8 in. rope. 1 shaft using ¾ in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines using 5/8 in., ¾ in., 7/8 in., and 1 in. (15.9, 19, 22, and 25 mm. rope.) The flat ropes run from ½ by 7 ½ in. (12.7 by 190.5 mm.) to ½ by 4 ½ in. (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting-engines, which are set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties in operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes.

Industrial minerals are the Cinderella of the mining I industry. Often considered as just dirt by traditional hard-rock miners and oil drillers, these products nonetheless comprise the second largest segment of the industry and the fastest-growing one. With annual sales of $5.7 billion, industrial minerals make up 22% of the dollar value of U.S. mineral consumption. By contrast, metals account for only 11%. Fuels, of course, are dominant, representing 67%. The dollar values of production and consumption for the three segments of the industry in 1968 are shown in Table I. The growth rate of industrial minerals is shown in Table II. From 1953-1968, the current-dollar value of all U.S. mineral production increased at the average annual rate of 3.8% while that of the gross national product increased at 5.9%. Industrial minerals are the only segment of the mining industry that approached the growth of the overall economy in this period, with production values increasing 5.1% a year and apparent-consumption values 5.6% These data, expressed in current dollars, include the effects of inflation. The growth in U.S. industrial minerals production is even more striking when expressed in indexes of physical production. As shown in Table III, production of all U.S. industries increased by 4.1% a year from 1953 to 1968. The growth in production of stone and earth minerals just matched this figure. By contrast, the average annual increase for oil and gas was 2.2%: for metals, 1.6% : and for coal, only 0.6 %.

Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain <0.3% Cr203, and chromite is almost always less than 50 mp in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratiform and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (>25% chromite) or very low grade (<2% chromite); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes, large tonnages exist only in the <2% chromite rocks and the composition of the chromite in those rocks may be unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than lo8 tons of material with 2.0 to 5.5% Cr203, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts. In addition, some chromiferous sand placers may contain tens to hundreds of millions of tons of material between 2 and 5% Cr203

A few copper-zinc-hasp alloys mppt die-casting requirements reasonably well, although improvements are desired. Aluminum bronzes, high-tin bronzes and some copper-nickel-zinc alloys can be die-cast, according to Herb,&apos; but seldom are because of such factors as higher melting ranges and greater cost than certain of the brasses. Fox2 has summarized the copper-base die-casting alloys that were in commercial use in 1937 and has given the effects of different alloying constituents. As I promised, in a former paper on the Bryan Mill,* to give further data regarding the plates from four battery-aprons, I now submit the following: These aprons were 4.5 feet wide by 16 feet long; the first two plates of each apron were 4.5 by 4.5 feet, and the remainder of varying sizes, as can be seen by their relative weights, as shown in the table; but all were 54 inches wide. They were in use 4 years and 9 months, and about 15,265 tons of ore passed over each. The ore was quartz, carrying about the same weight in silver as in gold; showing some copper, and highly impregnated with ferric oxide. The tailings show about 0.6 per cent., and the bullion about 10 per cent., of copper. The silver was present mostly as sulphide; and the copper was also present as sulphide, with some carbonate. The ore treated ill 1898 was a fair average of the whole run; so I take it as an example from which to make a few deductions.

There arc still ample reserves of phosphate in Florida and Tennessee, but the richest low-cost areas have been exhausted. The miners, by the introduction of more efficient equipment, have succeeded in preventing material increases in production costs. Further mechanical improvements could not be expected to keep up with the factors tending to increase costs. While the conventional phosphate "washers" are capable of recovering practically all of the plus 1.5-mm. phosphate from the matrix, approximately 50 per cent of the phosphate values are in the minus 1.5-mm. sizes. Flotation now affords an economical and efficient means for recovering the fine ( — 1.5 mm.) phosphate formerly discarded to waste dumps. Through the reclamation of dumps and recovery from current washer wastes, flotation has doubled the reserves of Florida and Tennessee. By doubling recoveries from the matrix, flotation reduces capital investment requirement and substantially reduces production costs. It definitely improves the grade of the total production and provides a flexibility of operation that cannot be obtained by any other known means.

Earnings of engineers in the period 1956 to 1958 continued the upward trend observed in the previous survey interval, 1953 to 1956. The overall median (all graduates) was $6500 in 1953, $7750 in 1956 (a 19 pct upstep or about 6.5 pct annually), and $8750 in 1958 (up 13 pct from 1956 or 6.5 pct average yearly). The latter represents an increase from mid-1956 to mid-1958. For this same two-year span the Consumer Price Index rose 1.5 pct and the Average Gross Weekly Earnings for Production (Manufacturing) climbed close to 10 pct. Median earnings for the major classifications studied are presented in Table I. The increase in engineering earnings are not distributed equally among the various activity classifications or among the experience levels of the survey. Summary results of the changes of the median lines for the major divisions are presented in Table 11. Data in this table are approximations- dollars are rounded to the nearest $50 unit and percentages to the nearest full percentage.

Mineral engineering student enrollment in U. S. and Canadian schools for 1955-1956 is 11,408, an increase of 11 pct more than last year. The undergraduate and graduate engineering students in both countries number 251,765, or 13 pct more than last year. These figures have been released by the American Society for Engineering Education. The largest increase in the undergraduate mineral engineering group in the U. S. is in ceramic engineering, with 676 students, or 31 pct more than last year. The next largest increase is in mining which shows a gain of 13.5 pct, compared with a gain of 13.1 pct in the total undergraduate enrollment in all engineering schools approved by the Engineers&apos; Council for Professional Development. This figure is 190,355, which approaches the prewar figure. Metallurgical undergraduates increased 13 pct; geological, 5 pct; and petroleum, 2.5 pct. This year the figures for geophysics are combined with those for geological engineering, making a total of 1610 undergraduates, of which the geophysicists comprise about one seventh.

THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. If n = actual mill speed, rpm, nc = calculated critical speed, rpm, np = calculated percentage critical speed, and D == inside diameter of the mill in feet, then n, In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, P will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. &apos; Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills. The Relationship between Capacity and Speed It is the general belief that the capacity, T, of a tumbling mill is directly proportional to the speed of the mill, other things remaining constant.&apos; Mathematically this is represented by the equation T - c¹ n tph [4] where c, is a factor related with the grinding characteristics of the ore, method of reduction, and the units chosen. It is proposed here that the general equation relating mill capacity and speed should be of the form T = c¹ nm tph [5] In other words, the capacity should be proportional to the mill speed raised to power m, the numerical value of the exponent being 1 5 m 5 1.5, depending on the circumstances. Eq. 5 can also be written in the following forms: T = c, (np)m tph, and [6] T=Ca vm tph, [71 where v = peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute. If the observed capacity of a mill at speed n¹ is = T¹ tph, the capacity T² of the same mill at speed n² should be T² = T¹ (n²/n¹)tph [8] The Relationship between Power Consumption, Mill Diameter, and Speed The only well known theoretical deduction relating power consumption, P, and mill diameter appears to be the formula of duPont introduced by Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill.&apos; According to duPont, the power required to operate a mill is a function of the mass of the balls, of the lever arm of the ball mass, and of the speed of the mill. The ball mass per unit of mill length is proportional to the square of the diameter, the lever arm is directly proportional to the diameter, and the critical mill speed or any percentage thereof is inversely proportional to the square root of the mill diameter. Following this reasoning, the original duPont formula is of the form P = c4D² c D • c6D-0.5 = c7D2.5 [9] If the mill speed in the above equation is expressed in terms of Eq. 3, the duPont formula may be written as follows: P=f1(D2) f2(D) f³(—np) or [10] vD P = c np D2.5 kw [11] Eq. 11 may also be derived from the mechanical principle of force, which is equal to mass x acceleration. Power necessary to operate a mill may be considered to be an homogeneous linear function of the force developed. Ball or rod mass per unit of mill length is a function of D2. The influence of modifications in the molybdenum, vanadium and, to a limited degree, carbon and boron content to a basic composition of 5 pct Cr, 0.75 pct Mo, 1 pct V hot-work tool steel composition, was studied in respect to hardenability, grpain- coarsening temperature, and tempering charactevistics. Tensile, impact, and fatigue pvoperties were studied for the most promising compositions. An alloy with a typical composition of 0.43 pct C, 4.97 pct CI-, 0.33 pct Si, 2.25 pct Mo, and 1.00 pct V uas found to offer the most favorable combination of properties in respect to high-strength applicntions when tempered at 1100°F. MANY 5 pct Cr high-strength steels are at present being manufactured in North America which fit well into the classification of the AISI-SAE system. Much interest has been shown in these materials as ultra-high-strength steels for use at elevated temperatures. The limiting temperature of use lies at the point where the steels begin to soften rapidly. Although a great deal of information has been made available in the past two years on the properties of selected alloys in this series, little information exists on the effect of systematically varying the ccntent of one or more elements in the 5 pct Cr-base alloy. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of variations of the carbon, molybdenum, vanadium, and, to a limited extent, the silicon, manganese, boron, and niobium content of a 5 pct Cr steel to the AISI H-13 base analysis. Grain boundary grooving has been studied in chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten under a variety of conditions using high vacuum techniques and tantalum -gettered argon. The average surface free energy of solid chromium, and the chromium-liquid silver interface free energy were respectively found to be 2200 ± 250 and 500 i 130 ergs per sq cm from groove formation kinetics and estimates of pertinent volume difffusion coefficients. The results for chromium were unffected by variations in interstitial content ranging from 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, or 0.003 to 0.03 pct O. Surface diffusion is the primary mechanism of groove formation in chromium under 1 atm argon at 1200" to 140O°C, and is essentially unaffected by 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, 0.003 to 0.03 pct O , metastable nitrogen contents up to -0.01 pct, and up to 2 torr Ag vapor. At higher temperatures, the major mechanism is volume diffusion in argon or evaporation-condensation in stutic vacuum. Surface diffusion occurs in molybdenum at 0.5 to 0.96 and in tungsten at 0.5 to 0.9 of the absolute melting tempera -ture by a single mechanism, possibly by the migration of single adatoms or vacancies. Results were slightly affected by up to 23 tory Sn vapor, and in molybdenum were essentially unaffected by 0.5 Ti or carbon in the range 0.002 to 0.02 pct. Volume difffusion through the liquid is the mechanism of groove formation in chromium-liquid silver at 1200" to 1400°C and in molybdenum-, Mo-0.5Ti-, and tungsten-liquid tin at 1200" to 2000°C. The solid-liquid interface free energies involved were estimated from grooving kanetics. WHEN a grain boundary intersects a solid surface, a groove tends to form along the line of intersection at temperatures above about half the absolute melting point (0.5 TM). The groove progressively grows by preferential atomic migration either by diffusion or evaporation. Establishment of a groove angle occurs in accordance with the grain boundary and surface free energies involved. The motivation for groove formation is a reduction in the total surface free energy of the system. This study is a continuation of previous work on thermal grooving of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten.&apos; The temperature ranges were extended, and the effect of metallic and interstitial impurities was evaluated. The results were such that certain interface free energies and surface self-diffusion coefficients were deduced from the grooving kinetics. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials and Preparation. As indicated in Table I, the 0.05-0.08-cm-thick chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten sheet used was nominally 99.99 pct after recrystallization. Extruded chromium rod,&apos; prepared from iodide process crystals, was warm rolled to sheet at 700°C. Sheet of three Cr-0 impurity alloys containing up to 0.03 pct 0 was prepared by warm rolling arc melted, extruded, and swaged rod. Two Cr-C impurity alloys containing up to 0.09 pct C were made by equilibrating unalloyed chromium with a known amount of CH4 for 24 hr at 1150°C in previously evacuated quartz capsules. Chromium containing nominally 0.015 and 0.06 pct N was similarly prepared by equilibration with NH3. The sheet was recrystallized to give a stable grain size about equal to the sheet thickness. Molybdenum and Mo-O.5Ti were recrystallized in a tantalum resistance furnace 1 hr at 1 x lo-5 torr at 2300" and 220O°C, respectively. Tungsten was similarly annealed for 1 hr at 2500°C. Chromium and its impurity alloys were outgassed at 1100°C and recrystallized 1 hr at 1700°C under 1 atm Ar. Except for nitrogen, the impurity content stayed roughly constant. Nitrogen in both alloys was reduced to <0.001 pct. In fact, over 80 pct of the added nitrogen was lost after outgassing at llOO°C and annealing sheet 1 hr at 1300°C in argon in the presence of tantalum. Such a rapid loss can be rationalized since -2 torr N are required for equilibrium with 0.04 pct N in solution,3 while the equilibrium pressure is ~10-5 torr over tantalum at 1300°C.4 The recrystallized sheet was cut into small coupons which were metallographically ground and polished on one side with a minimum of grain boundary relief. The surface roughness was on the order of 0.01 µ. The tin and silver used were nominally 99.999 spec-trographically pure. After being outgassed at 1100°C and equilibrated in a molybdenum crucible for 0.5 hr at 1800°C in argon, the tin contained 3 ppm 0, <0.3 ppm N, and 0.1 ppm H. Following outgassing at 900°C and equilibration in a chromium crucible 1 hr at 1400°C in argon, the gas content of the silver was 1 ppm O, <0.5 ppm N, and 0.3 ppm H. Grooving Under Argon or Vacuum. All specimens were placed in unsealed containers made from rod or sheet of the same alloy, thereby enabling the polished surface to achieve gas-solid equilibrium. The annealing fixtures are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen was placed in a resistance furnace with a tantalum or Ta-10W heating element plus tantalum fixtures or radiation shields. Chromium was outgassed at 1100°C, and molybdenum and tungsten were outgassed at 1900°C to 1 x l0-5 torr or at the grooving temperature, whichever was lower. The effect of fabrication variables on the creep-rupture properties of TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C), Cb-TZM [columbium-modified TZM (7140-1.5 pct Nb-0.5 pct Ti-0.8 pct Zr-0.05 pct C)], and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C) has been studied at 982º. 1093º, 1204º, and 1315°C for rupture times up to 1000 hr. The creep tests were performed in vacuum creep furnaces, employing cold-trapped oil-diffusion pumps, operating at pressures 2 X 10-7 tory. After-test chemical analyses showed no significant changes in interstitial content. The creep-rupture properties of TZM, fabricated according to current mill practice, were determined in the stress-relieved and in the re crystallized conditions to provide control data. Specimens of TZM, Cb-TZM, and TZC fabricated according to each of two experimental fabrication schedules were then tested. The schedules differed in terms of in-process annealing temperatures and warm -working temperatures. The data make several conclusions evident. Fabrication variables do indeed have a profound effect on the long-time creep-rupture properties of molybdenum alloys. Strengths of these alloys compare very favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys in the temperature range studied. FOR several years we have been engaged in the evaluation of the creep-rupture properties of promising refractory metal alloys. We consider the determination of these properties to 1000 hr at several temperatures necessary for a valid comparison. Such an evaluation indicated that the creep strengths of Mo-0.5 pct Ti and TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C) compare favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys. Tensile and recrystallization data of other investigators1,2 show an effect of fabrication variables. More specifically, those fabrication schedules which produce high strength through work hardening exhibit the least thermal stability. A similar conclusion was reported by perkins3 for Cb-TZM. This would lead one to expect that, in terms of creep, those materials showing higher strength at short times and low temperatures would exhibit lower strength at long times and high temperatures. If these expectations were fact, a substantial improvement could be made in these alloys by optimizing their fabrication schedule in terms of their anticipated service temperature. We therefore undertook a study of the effect of fabrication variables on the long-time creep properties of TZM, Cb-TZM (Mo-1.5 pct Cb-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.05pct C) and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C). MATERIALS All materials used were supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Mich. Our original intention was to test the same heat of each alloy in different conditions. The total production of petroleum in the Gulf Coast in 1927 was 54.541.180 bbl., .5.655.665 bbl. more than in 1926. The Texas total was 49.129.910 bbl. (Table 1) and the Louisiana tota1 5.411.270 bbl. (Table 2). Louisiana production decreased 278.028 bbl., compared with that of 1926. Spindletop produced nearly 44 per cent. of the Texas total.
