The cost and the speed of sinking a shaft are factors of so great importance in operating a mine, that the data given in Table I., herewith published, will be of interest and value to all engaged in practical mining; and for this reason the data are communicated for permanent and accessible record in our Transactions. The figures 'of cost cover the period from January 1, 1903, to May 31, 1903, during which time the total depth sunk was 858 ft. So far as I know, the cost of sinking per foot (£13,15s., 11.04d.) of a shaft of the dimensions 21 ft. by 6 ft. in hard rock, is the cheapest yet on record; and the speed of 213.5 ft. per month, which was attained during May, 1903, is also the best record for speed in sinking in rock so hard as that of this shaft. During the period from January 1 to May 31, 1903, there were 144 rounds worked, involving 4,032 holes, of a total depth of 28,963 ft. 2.4 in., which is equivalent to an average depth of 7 ft. 2.2 in. per hole bored. These data are of added interest from the fact that the work was done practically by native labor.

A joint statistical report released by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicates that business investment in new plants and equipment is expected to total $81.8 billion during 1971. This figure is based on the findings of a survey conducted in late April and May and reflects about a 1 ½ % decrease in investments from the $83.1 billion projected in February. Mining, on the other hand, is still in a bullish mood and is expected to spend $1.99 billion in 1971 compared to $1.89 billion in 1970 and $1.86 billion in 1969. Based on figures quoted above, mining investment in 1971 should show a 5.2% increase over 1970. Carl E. Bagge, president of the National Coal Association, was the dedicatory speaker at the new Milton R. Young Station of the Minnkota Power Cooperative in North Dakota. This new power plant incorporates many innovations which have overcome the problems of using the low-cost lignite abundant in the area. According to Bagge, this development and President Nixon's recent request for an extra $10 million for coal gasification plants is helping the region lead the way in providing for the power needs of the future. He also maintains that gasification of coal can reconcile coal consumption with the demand for cleaner air, and also assure the nation of adequate pipeline gas.

INTRODUCTION Selective flocculation as a method of desliming potash flotation plant feed has been in commercial use since November, 1974.l It was installed to replace a 1ess efficient mechanical desliming process. While most plants operating in the Saskatoon area of Saskatchewan were designed for 4% to 5% insolubles in practise the quantity and quality of the insoluble materials in the ore has been variable. The variability of the ore has contributed to less than optimum efficiency in the desliming and consequently, the potash flotation circuits. This lower than expected efficiency contributed to the commercialization of a patented process2 through large scale pilot plant testing. Referring to published information and experience, the application of selective flocculation-flotation of slimes to sylvinite ores will be compared with the more conventional mechanical methods of desliming. THE ORE The ore beds being mined in the Saskatoon area of Saskatchewan have proven to be much less uniform than originally thought (Figure 1). The insoluble content of the plant feed is variable in both quantity and quality due to two factors, the presence of disturbances and the structural weakness of the mud seams immediately above the ore beds. Some alteration of the insolubles in the vicinity of disturbances has made them more difficult to liberate and makes ore from the disturbed areas less amenable to treatment.

The Lo Aguirre ore deposit of Sociedad Minera Pudahuel is expected to have a life of 12 years, producing 16,500 mt per year of copper cathodes. The total copper content of the ore ranges from 2% in acid-soluble form to 2% as sulfides. Sociedad Minera Pudahuel chose TL leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning as the processing steps to give low investment and operating costs. Design and operating criteria of the TL leach plant have been obtained in an experimental program carried out since 1974. Bench scale tests indicated that 90% of the oxidic copper and 35% of the sulfidic copper could be extracted to give 5 gpl copper by treating crushed ore with acid, curing, and rinsing in a column with a dilute acid solution containing ferric sulfate which is requllred to solubilize the sulfides. These results were verified in a pilot plant which combined leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. Raffinate was recycled to the leaching circuit after oxidation to regenerate ferric ion. Refinements in the processing have resulted in significant improvements in extraction to give 95% to 98% recovery of the oxidic copper and 55% and 60% of the sulfidic copper. The plant is expected to give this degree of recovery. As a consequence, the original plan to include a concentrator in the plant has been abandoned.

A corrosion-testing apparatus which operates in the field and which will determine the comparative resistance of various ferrous materials to corrosion by gaseous hydrogen sulfide at ordinary temperatures is described. The principle of the uniform method of testing is to allow natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide, direct from its source in the field, to flow over the group of specimens for a given period of time, and subsequently to estimate the corrosion sustained by each specimen by determining its loss in weight. The comparative results obtained when specimens of 47 representative ferrous materials of described typical composition \\ere tested at ordinary temperatures with natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide are given in tables showing average penetration of metal, Inches per year. The primary purpose of the work Mas to determine the possible utllity to the petroleum and natural gas industries of ferrous materials that are commercially available, and no attempt is made to discuss the results of the tests from the metallurgical standpoint. The following is a summary of the results obtained: 1. Steels containing 12 to 27 per cent of chromium showed the highest resistance to corrosion. The presence of nickel In these high-chromium steels did not affect their resistance. 2. Steels containing approximately 5 per cent of chromium showed comparatively high resistance, but somewhat less than that of the high-chromium steels.

The reported production of petroleum in the Dominion of Canada for 1930 was 1,555,199 bbl., an increase of 455,373 bbl. over 1929. Alberta accounted for nearly all the production with Ontario and New Brunswick, the other two productive provinces, contributing less than 1 per cent, of the total. The completion of about 25 producing wells in Alberta was more than sufficient to offset the decline of the older wells in that province and the small decline in Ontario. The production of about 5000 bbl. in New Brunswick represents a restricted output to meet the market demand. Table 1 shows the production by provinces for the past 10 years. The consumption of natural gas for all purposes in Canada reached a new record of practically 40,000,000,000 cu. ft. in 1930, which was a considerable increase over 1929. The estimated value of the gas output was $10,500,000, against a little over $5,000,000 for the total petroleum production. Gas wells in Alberta accounted for over 75 per cent. of the total, with Ontario second and New Brunswick a poor third. The outlook for 1931 is for very little change in production of either gas or oil in Ontario and New Brunswick but for a substantial increase in both in Alberta.

INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes. Cycling operations have been successfully conducted in the La Gloria Zone for eight years. The cycling of this zone is now virtually completed. It is proposed that this report shall review the cycling operations of this reservoir so that the industry can more accurately evaluate the cycling process as a production method. The La Gloria project is one of the largest cycling operations in the State of Texas. The gas rights in the field are unitized in three operating units. By mutual agreement Magnolia Petroleum is the designated operator of the project for the 12 operators owning the gas rights. The La Gloria Corp, is the owner and operator of the cycling plant. The development and operation of the field are under the direction of an Operators Committee comprised of a representative of each operator. The Operators Committee is assisted by an Engineering and Geological Sub-Committee. The La Gloria gas field is situated approximately three miles north of Fal-furrias, Tex., and lies principally in the extreme south end of Jim Wells County, with its outer limits extending into the north end of Brookes County, Tex. It is a simple elliptically-shaped dome which has a closure of 350 ft. The field encompasses a surface area of 5,500 acres. The gas reserves are found in 20

Ore distribution being what it is, many of today's mining companies are forced to develop foreign reserves to satisfy the demands of their customers. This necessity complicates the economic picture for a company, because management must look well be- yond grade and tonnage to determine the feasibility of developing a foreign orebody. Above all, the taxes on such a development must be assessed. The difference that taxes can make in mining profits will be illustrated here for three countries-Canada, Mexico and the United States. For purposes of comparison, identical orebodies will be assumed to occur in all three countries. Only the taxes on these properties will vary. Grade, tonnage, gross income, production costs and production rates will all be the same. The discussion will be limited to federal taxes, because state and provincial taxes are usually negligible by comparison. Assumptions relative to the orebody and the nature of the company undertaking the operation are as follows: (1) Copper is the only value to be recovered. (2) Sixty million tons of ore have been delineated. (3) Underground mining is required, and the production rate will be 3 million tpy. (4) The life of the property is 20 yr. (5) Operations in Mexico or Canada will be handled by a subsidiary of a U.S. parent company. (6) The subsidiary will offer stock.

On the Continent, ferromanganese has been produced in the blast furnace almost continuously since 1876, but little definite information concerning the practice is to be found in technical literature, and almost nothing in the way of a theory of the manganese furnace. In this country, prior to 1904, but one company had attempted its production in a serious way, and none of the operating data or other information from this company has been, or is, available to the public..In the last 5 years, as a result of the restriction of imports, a number of furnaces have been blown in on this alloy, with the result that in 1918 as many as 18 furnaces were in blast. The majority of the men in charge of these furnaces had had little previous experience in such operations; so the Bureau of Mines, in the summer of 1918, undertook the collection of data from ferromanganese furnaces. Operating data were collected by the Bureau from eleven ferromangahese furnaces, which will be referred to throughout this paper as furnaces A, B, C, F, G, I, J, K, L, M, and P; the dimensions of seven of the furnaces are given in Table 1. THE mechanical behavior of molybdenum has become a matter of considerable interest in recent years because it has a reasonably high strength at high temperatures. Various aspects of its fatigue behavior have been investigated previously,1-3 and the results can be summarized as follows. Recrys-tallized molybdenum exhibits a fatigue limit which decreases continuously with increasing temperature. The ratio of fatigue-limit stress to ultimate tensile stress is high (0.6 to 0.8) and reasonably constant. The present work was undertaken to determine the effect of variations in environment on the fatigue of molybdenum stressed in fully reversed axial tension compression. In order to provide a basis to which these data could be compared, a complementary series of fatigue tests were made in vacuum. All of the specimens used were made from one mill lot of unalloyed molybdenum which had been vacuum-arc melted, worked down to 1-in.-diam bar, re-crystallized, then warm-worked to 5/8 in. diam. The interstitial content by weight was as follows: C—0.022 pet, 02-0.0026 pet, Hz-0.0001 pet, and N20.0002 pct. The average grain diameter in the transverse direction was about 0.035 mm, and the average grain length was about 0.15 mm. Typical tensile-test data are shown in Table I. None of the specimens tested exhibited an upper yield point.

THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent, of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART I.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent., of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results.

The southern West Virginia coalfield was formed in a rapidly subsiding depositional basin associated with deep-seated growth faults. Subsidence began to the southeast during deposition of the Pocahontas Formation, and then shifted to the northwest during deposition of the New River, Kanawha, and Allegheny Formations. Rocks of all the coal-bearing formations grade into massive sandstones to the northwest. For the No. 3 Pocahontas, Sewell, Campbells Creek, and No. 5 Block coals discussed in this study, the overall sulfur and ash values of each coal seam increase gradually toward the northwest. The thickness of each coal tends to increase toward the southeast. These trends are partly a reflection of the differential subsidence of the coal basin along with varying degrees of peat accumulation and degradation. The northwest side of the coal swamps underwent relatively less subsidence and, thus, more degradation due to increased aerial exposure, with a resulting increase in the sulfur and ash values of the coals, and a decrease in the thickness. The open sea existed to the west of the coal swamps, and this marine environment also contributed to the higher sulfur values to the northwest. Coals of the Pottsville Group in the southern West Virginia coalfield generally have sulfur values between 0.6-1.0% with some as high as 2-3% on the northwest edge of the coal basin.

When metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Lagenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,l Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

Equilibrium antimony contents of pb-sb alloys in contact with PbO-Sb2O3 slags containing less than 45 mole pct Sb203 uleve determined at 650', 700°, and 750°C in an inert atmosphere. In this ten~pevature range, the antimony contmzt of the alloy increased with increasing temperature at all slag compositions. The PbO-Sb203 phase diagram below 28 mole pct Sb2O3 was determined by thermal analysis and by application of a log sbZ4/y$b0 us plot determined from the equilibrium-activity data. The resulting phase diagram showed a eutectic at a temperature of 604°C and a comfiosition of 21.6 mole pct Sb2O, with a maximum terminal solid solubility of Sb203 in PbO of 5.6 mole pct. These results are compared with existing data in the literature. In the past three decades, only a small amount of experimental work has been done on the slag-metal equilibria in the Pb-PbO-SbaO3 or the analogous arsenic and tin systems. These systems are important in commercial lead-refining processes such as softening and dross fuming since it is impurities such as antimony, arsenic, and tin in lead bullion and Sb2O3, As2O3, and SnOz in lead drosses which must be re-

R. V. NorHis, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*) : The electric-haulage plant of the Short Mountain Colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Co., mentioned by Messrs. Stoek and Harris as the earliest underground electric plant in the United States (and, I believe, the second in the world), was started July 23, 1887. The plant, designed by W. M. Schlessinger, consists of two motor-cars, each weighing about 5 tons and equipped with a 32-h.p. Union Electric Go. motor. The original general construction of the motor-cars is shown by Mr. Stoek; but they were rebuilt, the same year, with some important improvements in design; and, except for strengthening the frames and replacing the original pig-iron weights by a casting, they have not been greatly changed since that time. The generating-plant consists of two Union Electric Co. dynamos of 65-h.p. each, driven by an old 18- by 48-in. plain slide-valve engine; the ordinary voltage is 450 and the amperage varies from 40 to 200; the average indicated h.p. of the engine is about 75, with a steam-consumption of about 75 lb. per i.h.p. per hour; and as the cost of steam at this colliery is 8.11 cents per 1,000 lb.,the steam-cost per day is about $4.56.

TUESDAY afternoon the annual meeting was devoted to a general session, in the auditorium, on production control. George Otis Smith presided and in opening the meeting recalled that the session in 1920 on the stabilization of the coal industry was the first time this subject had been discussed by Institute members in a general session and then introduced Carl Snyder, of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who spoke on "Long-time Growth and the Factors In Its Variations." He spoke without notes and a full presentation of his views must be deferred until the stenographer's report is available. He said that of the total production some 80 to 90 per cent represents goods for consumption and the other 20 to 10 per cent for construction. He discussed various indices of production, concluding that bank clearings are the best, and showed by charts that when they are plotted, allowing for various disturbing factors, they are seen to increase quite regularly at the rate of about 4 per cent per year. The production curve rises at only 3y2 per cent per year, because agricultural production does not in- crease as fast as manufacturing postal revenues in- crease at the rate of 5 per cent per year while the use of electricity increases twice as fast.

MANY things must be considered in coming to a decision as to what type of crushing and grinding equipment is to be used for preparing run-of-mine ore for concentration, amalgamation, flotation, or cyanidation. This paper is intended in no sense as a thorough discussion of these various factors, but rather contains a few observations based on a wide experience in the manufacture and application of milling machinery. One important governing factor is the tonnage to be dealt with. In large plants treating several thousands of tons in eight hours, a large jaw or gyratory crusher of substantial construction is standard equipment for reducing ore to 8 or 10 in. or finer. In open-pit work, using power shovels with 4- or 5-yd. dippers, a jaw crusher should have a receiving opening of 48 by 60 in., or 60 by 84 in., so that dynamite or hand sledging will not be required for breaking to a finer size before primary crushing. The coarsely broken ore is then conveyed by a belt to vibrating screens, the oversize from which is again conveyed by belts to secondary crushers having openings of 12 or 14 in., the product from which is conveyed to storage. From storage, the material goes to a finishing gyratory for reduction to 1/4 in. or finer.

APPARENTLY unperturbed by any misgiving as to ill luck connected with the mystic number thirteen -for there were exactly that number of Directors on deck-the Board held two sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 21. , . Between the executive session at 5:15 p. m. and the general session at 8:30 p. m., 28 Section and Division delegates were wests of the Directors at dinner. Committee chair- " men and past officers brought the attendance to 75. Messrs. McAuliffe, Merica, Mudd and Tally had expressed their intention to be at the Directors' meeting, but each was prevented unavoidably at the last minute. At the executive session of the Board, J. V. W. Reynders was unanimously chosen to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Becket as Director: and Eugene McAuliffe in like " manner was selected to become Vice-president to fill the vacancy created hy Dr. Becket's assumption of the Presidency. Upon nomination of President Becket the following Executive Committee was appointed: Frederick M. Becket, chairman; Howard N. Eavenson, H. A. Guess, J. V. W. Reynders and William Wraith; and the Finance Committee was appointed as follows: Henry Krumb, chairman; Paul D. Merica and H. G. Moulton. Karl Eilers was reelected Treasurer and A. B. Parsons was re- elected Secretary to serve for the ensuing year, whereupon the executive session was adjourned.
