IN recent years the constitution of the high-silver aluminum-silver alloys has been extensively investigated. Hansen1 has re-viewed the literature to 1935. More re-ently, Obinata and Hagiya,2 Hofmann and Volk,3 Taziri4 and Tishchenko5 have con-firmed the general features of the phase diagram in the region around 25 atomic per cent aluminum. In this paper we present the results of high-precision measurements of lattice con-stants of the silver-rich alpha solid solution in the homogeneous range and the neigh-boring two-phase regions. These results are used to establish the nature of the solid solution, the identity of directly measured densities with those calculated from lattice constants and the homogeneity limits of the alpha solid solution with respect to three different neighboring phases. A study of the earlier investigations indicated that the last two subjects in particular required new and accurate data.

Hecla Mining Company's Lakeshore Mine and Metallurgical complex near Casa Grande, Arizona, is the first plant in North America to utilize the roast/leach/electrowinning process for production of cathode copper from sulfide concentrates. Oxide copper ores are also mined at Lakeshore. Using sulfuric acid and sponge iron by-products of the roast/leach operation, the oxide ore is leached in vats, the copper is precipitated with iron and recovered as cement copper. This paper will describe the roast/leach facilities and discuss the operating conditions at which more than 95 percent of the copper in concentrate is made soluble in acid solutions while less than 5 percent of the iron is rendered soluble. More than 97 percent of the sulfur contained in concentrate is captured either as strong sulfuric acid or as soluble sulfates in leach liquors. The iron rich residue after leaching is pelletized and reduced to sponge iron in an SLRN reduction kiln.

THE B-Ni system was chosen for this study because of the great interest being shown in boron-fiber-strengthened composite materials. Boron fibers were obtained from Texaco Experiment, Inc. They average 4.2 mils in diam with a 0.5-mil tungsten wire in the center. In order to make the diffusion couple, the fibers were included in the nickel matrix by electroforming. The samples were placed in a preheated furnace for the desired temperature and length of time. Sectioning and polishing the samples revealed concentric rings as shown in Fig. 1. The average penetration distance, X, was calculated by measuring the radius of the second phase (the white shell in Fig. 1) and subtracting the original radius. The second phase was identified as NiB by X-ray diffraction. This allows the kinetics of the formation of the phase NiB to be calculated by Eq. [I], which is taken from offman:"

Each spring most secondary schools select their best student science exhibits, prepared during the preceding academic year, and send them to regional "Science Fairs", which now number over 220. Winner-finalists of these regional contests are then sent to the annual National Science Fair, conducted by Science Service, a non- profit institution for the popularization of science, for final judging. (The Fair is now known as the "National Science Fair-International" because of participation by finalists from Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Sweden and Canada.) For the first time since the Fair was started in 1950, AIME participated in the awards presentation. Held this year in Baltimore, Md., from May 5 to 9, five members of AIME's Washington, D.C., Section consented to represent the Institute as judges. They were: Marlin J. The adsorption of selenite on bentonite, kaolinite, and an iron--coated illite was studied to determine the importance of several soil variables on selenite removal from uranium mill tailings pond seepage. Adsorption capacities of the clays of selenite varied by orders of magnitude and decreased in the following order: illite > kaolinite > bentonite. Maximum adsorption of selenite on the clays was observed between pH 2.5 and the clay's zero-point-of-charge. Substantially less selenite was adsorbed on these clays in actual mill tailings solutions than in model systems. Virtually all selenite was removed from the tailings at pH 7. The principal removal mechanism at this pH is suggested to be the adsorption of selenite on freshly precipitated metal hydroxides. It is concluded that selenite can be removed from tailings seepage in soil or in clay liners in the presence of kaolinitic clays and iron oxides. Selenite would also tend to be removed from tailings seepage in calcareous strata.

IN 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

A new $18-million hydrometallurgical ore treatment facility for the recovery of molybdenum oxide was dedicated at Climax, Colo., on November 19 by Climax Molybdenum Co., division of AMAX. The Company has been producing molybdenum from molybdenite (MoS2) ores since 1918. Now oxide values, formerly lost in the sulfide flotation plant tailing are to be processed to yield about 3 million Ib per year of metal. In 1965, Climax produced about 50% of world molybdenum from sulfide ore. This ore is mined at the rate of 42,000 tpd. The annual production of concentrate is 100 million lb containing 90% to 92% MoS2, or about 50 million lb of metal. As only a relatively small portion of the total Climax production is sufficiently enriched in oxide molybdenum to process through the new plant, 5700 tpd of selected ore containing 1.5 lb of Mo per ton is now treated by the new process.

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.1

Longwall mining which has a long history abroad, was used only on a limited scale in the United States until less than 20 years ago. Modern longwall mining in this country can be said to have begun in 1960 with the first installation of self-advancing props in a coal mine in southern West Virginia. In Europe, because of adverse natural conditions, longwall mining is frequently the only practical method, but, in the United States, the system has had to compete economically with highly productive room-and-pillar systems. However, because it is inherently continuous, it has greater productive potential than room-and-pillar systems, and, therefore, although only about 5% of the total U.S. underground production today is the result of the longwall system, its growth potential is great. As mining, by necessity, progresses deeper and must be done under poorer natural conditions, less opportunity will exist for the room- and-pillar system, and the longwall system will have to be used.

The titanium-rich corner of the system Ti-AI-V has been studied to determine the phase relationships in the temperature interval 600° to 1200°C. Metallographic examination of long time isothermally annealed specimens was the principal method of investigation. The oxidation of CbO was studied by a gravimetric technique from 400° to 1200°C in oxygen. In this temperature range the oxidatiotz is characterized by an irlductive period of low oxidation rate, which becomes shorter as the temperature increases, followed by a rapid parabolic oxidation. The oxidation of CbO cannot be rate controlling in the oxidation of Cb metal in the temperature range, 800° to 1200°C. A thin optically inactive layer has been observed between the metal and Cb2O5 layer of Cb oxidized at 700°C or higher temperatures. Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) show the edge of a sample of Cb reacted to 50 pct of complete oxidation at 800°C. A NUMBER of new plants for the treatment of copper ores were completed or under construction during the year. Among these may be mentioned the plants of the International Nickel Co., those of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. and of the Roan Antelope Copper Co. Three copper re- fineries have been constructed, one at El Paso, Tex., and the other two in Canada. Two more are projected, one in France and one in England. The International Nickel Co.'s plant consists of an 8000-ton concentrator and a smelting plant containing thirty 10-hearth Herreshoff roasting furnaces, five reverberatory furnaces, and eight Smith-Pierce converter5 . The smelting plant is estimated to have a capacity of 5000 tons of ore or concentrate per day. The roasters are superimposed on the reverbratory furnace plant. As a consequence of this arrangement, the furnace building is unusually high. being 183 ft. from yard level to highest roof elevation.

Batcheller, we are able to give the following extracts from a letter written by Mr. Caetani: It has been a nice idea of yours to collect for me all those scraps of news I received a few days ago and to send me such a long interesting letter. In four years war I have had practically no news. Burch wrote several times but several of his letters were lost and so mine. I believe I even wrote to you. Much has changed since our last days in Telluride; here and there many have disappeared. Of myself I will tell you in a few words: for a year I was in Cadore(?), where I had the good luck to do to the others what they wished to do to me, and had good luck on my side. Then I went to Macedonia for 5 months, did little fighting but lost my faithful fellow officer and companion.

In high-volume mining operations, preventive maintenance programs that include standardized replacement wear parts can boost equipment availability and lower unit costs. Meeting the daily production targets depends heavily on keeping equipment working as close to full time as possible. This is the case at one medium-sized western surface coal operation producing approximately 2.7 million t/y (3 million stpy). The mine, located in western Wyoming, removes in excess of 8 million m3 (10.5 million cu yd) of highly abrasive overburden each year. According to the mine superintendent, "Abrasion at this mine is some of the worst I've ever seen. Shovel points can wear out in little more than one shift. Dozer blades some- times last two weeks, but can wear out sooner. And ripper points really take a beating. If we can replace this fast-wearing iron with small pieces that go on quickly, we think that's the way to go."

RECENT interest has been shown in utilizing solid-state techniques for obtaining large oriented grains in the Alnico Alloys.1-4 Unfortunately, due to the inherent brittleness of these materials it is difficult to introduce sufficient imperfections by deformation to support the nucleation and growth of new, recrystallized grains. As a result, recrystal-lization methods for obtaining large grains, such as the strain-anneal technique, do not appear to be feasible. Steinort et a1.2 used a combination of a thermal gradient and internal strains to obtain large single crystals of Alnico 5 from a poly crystalline casting by annealing at temperatures above 1200°C. It was suggested that the strains were the result of the precipitation of the y phase which exists between -850° and 1200°C. The disposal of phosphatic clays has presented a problem to the phosphate industry since the mining of phosphate rock first began in Polk County. As the flotation process was introduced in the late 1920's the problem of clay disposal was increased significantly since clay is present in proportionally greater quantities in reserves yielding flotation concentrates. Because of their physical character and the tremendous surface area per unit volume, these clays have the characteristic of retaining large volumes of water as they are slurried during processing. The disposal of clay and the recovery of a portion of the water require settling areas with a capacity ranging up to 2 cu ft for each cubic foot of phosphate matrix mined. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, the average cost for disposal of these wastes is 24.5[c] per ton of product. This is a major cost of phosphate rock production.
