WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. Substantial deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper pert of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconform-able, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series, The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement. Introduction Under the waters of Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, situated on the Canadian National Railway, 142 miles west of Port Arthur, the presence of three ore zones containing red and brown Bessemer hematite has been established. These were discovered and have been partly explored by means of diamond and churn drilling, The positions of the ore zones, designated as A, B and C, are shown on the accompanying maps and cross sections. This exploratory work, begun in 1938 by Joseph Errington* and Julian G. Cross, has been carried on by Steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd., and was continued during the winter of 1941-1942. For more than 60 years explorers have known that large quantities of hard hema. tite float of good grade existed along the south shore of Steep Rock Lake, and the presence of ore beneath the lake was inferred by many early geologists and explorers. Despite numerous previous attempts to find ore in place, actual discovery awaited the recent period of intensive exploratory effort in Canada. The results obtained in the drill holes put down since 1938 by steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd. are not only of interest, in themselves, to those concerned with the development of ore deposits, but, taken in connection with the surface exposures of adjoining formations, they form the assemblage of facts from which the geological reasoning in this paper proceeds; accordingly, they are set out here as briefly and exactly as may be.

The problem of strata control has of necessity been prominent in mining, and accounts of individual experience and research abound in the literature of most mining countries. Organized rescarch began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board's publications.' - Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordinated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: 1. To provide. by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. TO develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the properties of supports and their correct application. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the properties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient frequency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports. Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less.

Stainless iron, as mild stainless steel is usually called, an alloy ranging from 11.50 to 15.00 per cent chromium with carbon under 0.12 per cent, has been considered to be not appreciably affected in respect to corrosion resistance by heat treatment. This metal, while one of the most widely used of the "straight" chromium stainless alloys, has failed in many applications because of insufficient information regarding heat treatment. These failures have been attributed to many possible causes from an inherent lack of resistance to corrosion and misapplication to mlysterious electrolytic effects or comparatively minute non metallic inclusions. Many uses for a steel with such excellent physical properties as are latent in this alloy have been lost on account of corrosion failures which could have been avoided by applying proper heat treatment. The alloy has not received the recognition or attention it should because of the fact that the details of its metallurgical behavior were not thoroughly understood. Response to heat treatment of the steel is well known as regards tensile properties,1-2 but its application has been for improvement in tensile characteristics or on account of machining considerations rather than for corrosion prevention. The potential user of this steel has not been clearly advised in papers, either technical or commercial, that have been written about it in the last 10 years or more, of particular features that are of prime importance in developing the excellent properties of this metal. The data to be presented in this paper are concerned mainly with the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion resistance, but a study has also been made of the concurrent microstructural changes and an explanation developed for the phenomena revealed, as well as a correlation to the other physical properties—hardness, tensile characteristics and impact strength. Stainless steel, largely used for cutlery purposes, an alloy of approximately 13.00 per cent Cr with 0.30 per cent C;, must be hardened and the surface prepared by polishing or pickling for best resistance to staining and corrosion. By means of mathematical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equations, we describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various temperatures and concentrations encountered in a heavy water moderated reactor. When the hydrogen concentration is below terminal solid solubility only the a Phase is present. Redistributions are then described in terms of the characteristic functions of the difhsion equation. For higher concentrations both the a and 6 phases are present. We assume the two phases to be always in equilibrium. For moderately small hydrogen concentrations exact solutions of the two-phase equation approach the the approximate solutions derived by Sawatzky and for all concentrations the exact solutions exhibit the qualitative features of his result: the two-phase concentration increases with time, everywhere; in the absence of a hydrogen current at the hot end of the sample an a-phase region always exists there; the interface of the a + 6 , a-phase boundary moves toward the cold md of the sample and the hydrogen concentration is discontinuous at the interface. Simultaneous solulions of the a and a + 6 hydrogen distributims and of the concomitant interface motion are obtained and compared to the observations of Sawatzky and Markowitz. The kinetics of the hydrogen diffusion process are shown to lead to m apparent heat of transport of the a phase which is lower than the actual value (even for samples with long anneals) thus resolving at least partially the disparity between experimental measurements of this quantity. A number of recent papers1"4 have reported measurements on the diffusion and redistribution of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 under temperature and concentration gradients. These studies were instigated by problems arising from increasing use of Zircaloy-2 as a fuel element cladding material in pressurized-water power-reactors. The Zircaloy-2 picks up hydrogen during the operation of the reactor: the consequent precipitation of zirconium hydride in the Zircaloy-2 has pronounced effects on its mechanical properties. The Purpose of the present Paper is to describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various hydrogen concentrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in reactors. When the hydrogen in the Zircaloy-2 is entirely in the solid solution phase (a phase), the differential equation for thermal diffusion is well known and the redistribution can be described by standard mathematical methods some of which are given in Section 11 below. The treatment of the a + 6 (hydride) region differs from the earlier treatment of sawatzky3 by taking into account several modifications of the two-phase diffusion equations as suggested to us by Markowitz4 and Kidson.5 Even with the modifications the results obtained in our more complete treatment are substantially the same as those found by Sawatzky. As we show, the difference between the results of sawatzky3 and kIarkowitz4 is largely due to the difference in the geometry of their experiments. In the next section we derive the modified two-phase equation for arbitrary geometry. The exact solution of this equation is given in Section III for linear and cylindrical geometry. It is shown that Sawatzky's approximate solution is quite accurate for almost all the temperatures and hydrogen concentrations which are actually encountered. In Sawatzky's approximate theory the hydrogen concentration everywhere in the two-phase region increases continuously. As his paper pointed out, this result, together with hydrogen conservation, implies that in a sample with no hydrogen current flowing into the hot end a two-phase region is always accompanied by a single-phase region at the hot end of the sample. The net hydrogen gain in the two-phase region is supplied by the decrease of hydrogen in the single-phase region and by the movement of the (a, a + 6) boundary toward the cold end of the sample. Hydrogen conservation at the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to a discontinuity in the concentration and its derivative there. In Section IV it is shown how these qualitative features of the thermal diffusion kinetics arise from the simultaneous solution of the a-phase differential equation and a + 6 phase equation. Methods derived by us previously for the solution of the redistribution in both phases and the accompanying motion of the boundary are used to obtain approximate solutions valid for large times. The solutions account well for the observed redistributions of Sawatzky and Markowitz. It is shown how the continuing motion of the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to measured values of the heat of transport lower than the actual value, even for specimens with relatively long anneals.

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), Fig. 1. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

THE Birmingham district of Alabama has utilized the slag from its blast furnaces consistently since the earliest development of the slag industry. Today there are producers of slag cement who started business in 1900, and who have, under a progressive policy, expanded the number of their products to meet present demands. There are producers of slag aggregates and other crushed slag products who have been successful for periods of over thirty years. There are at the present two companies, Cheney Lime and Cement Co. and the Southern Cement Co., manu-facturing puzzolan cement; three companies, Birmingham Slag Co., Woodstock Slag Co., and Swann Chemical Co., making slag aggregates and by-products; one company, Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Co., a subsidiary of the U. S. Steel Corporation, producing ground open-hearth basic slag for soil conditioning. Two companies, the Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. and the Woodstock Slag Co., make slag concrete in ready-mix plants and one company, the Superock Company, manufactures fine and coarse slag aggregates under a new granulation process. No Portland cement is made with slag as an ingredient, because dolomite is used so extensively as a blast-furnace flux that the magnesium content of the slag is excessive.

INTRODUCTION Deformations and failure of rock masses in elopes, foundations or tunnels can be caused by water pressures. On the other hand, deformations of a rock mass affect the flow of water (and hence water pressures) by changing joint apertures. Including the coupling between flow and deformation effects is therefore important both in assessing the stability and deformation of a rock mass and in determining the amount of seepage taking place through it. The model that will be presented hare treats the coupling of the flow and deformation behavior of a rock mass. Deformations are modeled using the Rigid Block Method (Distinct Element Method) (Cundall, 19741, that is by assuming that the rock mass is composed of rigid blocks with deformable contact points. Flow is modeled by recognizing its discontinuous features, as occuring in a system of interconnected conduits formed by the joints. The program can also deal with problems involving free-surface flow. Example problems involving representations of rock masses are presented. Coupled flow modeling of interconnected conduits should be contrasted to equivalent-continuum models on the one hand and to pipe network models on the other hand. Continuous models substitute an anisotropically permeable continuum for the discrete flow that occurs in rock joints. Pipe or parallel plates represent the other extreme of existing models; they account for the discontinuous character of the flow problem, but cannot model rock mass deformation and failure. The coupled rigid block-flow model can eliminate most of these restrictions. SILICON, germanium, and tin occur with both the white tine-type structure and the diamond cubic structure. In the latter form these elements are semiconductors; in the former they are metallic. The metallic form of germanium and silicon is obtained only under high pressure.' For all three elements the transition from the semiconductor to the metallic state is accompanied by a decrease in the atomic volume of somewhat more than 20 pctily2 Table I. At such a large compression the widening of the s and p bands is sufficient to make the energy gap of 1.1 ev, or less, of the semiconductor disappear, giving rise to the metallic state.*

CORRUGATED sheet zinc has been used abroad for a great many years as a roofing material. In this country it has been in use for about 10 years. From the outset it was recognized that zinc sheets required closer spacing of the supporting purlins than steel sheets. Exact data regarding safe maximum fiber stresses were not available, however, and on occasions the span used was excessive and the sheets sagged. This paper describes both service and laboratory tests to determine safe maximum fiber-stress values for various grades of zinc for use in calculating the proper purlin spacings for any gage and profile under given loading conditions. These tests consist of laboratory loading tests on full-size roof sections over extended periods of time; of actual roof installations erected in conformity with the indications of the laboratory tests and observed over a period of years; of careful determinations of the apparent elastic limit of several grades of zinc, and finally of static tests1 (so-called creep tests) to determine the rate of flow of zinc under a variety of static tensile stresses at definite temperatures. Certain of the individual tests extended over a period of more than two years.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.

DURING the period extending from May, 1922, to September, 1923, the copper-refining furnaces of the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Mont., were operated exclusively with pulverized coal as fuel. The installation was made first as an experiment. It proved successful from the start and was abandoned solely because fuel oil from the Sunburst field became available at a price sufficiently low to make its use desirable from an economic standpoint. The equipment required for pulverized coal has, however, been kept intact and is available for immediate use should the oil supply fail. Inasmuch as pulverized coal had been used on two large reverberatory smelting furnaces and was, at the time we were considering its application to the copper-refining furnaces, being used on the Wedge furnaces roasting zinc concentrate for the electrolytic zinc plant, we were equipped with a coal-pulverizing plant of ample capacity to supply pulverized coal for the furnace refinery. The only problem was to devise suitable means for transporting pulverized coal from the pulverizer plant, located in the smelter building, to the refinery about 1000 ft. distant and about 150 ft. above the level of the pulverizer plant. When studying this installation, it should be borne in mind that the layout represents an adaptation suited to the existing conditions at this particular plant. The installation was entirely satisfactory and uniformly dependable but might be modified to advantage from an operating point of view if an entirely new installation were being planned.

Wet dust suppression can be achieved by 1) confinement of the dust within the dust producing area with a curtain of moisture, 2) wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture or 3) the formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, or too heavy to become airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid; however, it is not as effective for dust suppression as when small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with it. Performance of dust control com pounds is related to surface active agents and surface activity. In all liquids there is an attractive force between molecules which varies inversely as the sixth power of the distance between molecules. Thus, in the liquid phase where molecules are crowded together, the intermolecular forces are powerful; whereas in the liquid-vapor phase where the molecules are relatively far apart, these forces diminish rapidly. In the body of a fluid there is an uneven distribution of forces resulting in an inward pull called surface tension. The force which keeps two surfaces apart or causes them to coalesce is termed interfacial tension. Fluids of high surface tension exhibit poor wetting, spreading and penetrating qualities. Water has the unusually high surface tension of 72.75 dynes per cm at 20°C.

SILICON is one of the most important elements in the metallurgy of aluminum. It is always present in small amounts in the ordinary grades of "pure" aluminum, and hence in all alloys made therefrom. Within the last few years binary alloys containing up to 13. per cent, of silicon have come into extensive use for castings. Silicon is also added, beyond the amount present as an impurity, in alloys containing one or more other elements such as copper, manganese, magnesium and nickel. The binary aluminum-silicon alloys are not yet heat treated to any extent in commercial practice, although, as will be shown, their properties are affected to a very considerable degree by heat treatment. There are other aluminum alloys that develop higher strength, but the special characteristics of the silicon alloys may well lead to the application of heat-treating processes on a commercial scale. The role of silicon in the heat treatment of aluminum alloys is more important than would be indicated by consideration of the binary alloys alone, because many of the alloys that are heat treated in regular commercial practice contain some silicon in addition to that derived from the aluminum ingot as an impurity. Among these may be mentioned the heat-treated 195 alloy castings, and the wrought alloys 258, Special 178 and 51S of the Aluminum Co. of America, and the German wrought alloy, Lautal. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of experimental work and the conclusions derived therefrom regarding the heat treatment of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys. The products heat treated included forgings, chill castings and both "normal" and "modified" sand castings.
