A phase in strip mining of bituminous coal is the overturning of the surface of the land. The purpose of this report is to acquaint the operators and others interested in stripping with the work that has been done in certain States to reclaim the surface of land from which the coal has been removed by this method of raining. The preparation of this manuscript follows an extensive study of the subject in the field in the course of which a large number of strip mines were visited. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in the report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the operators of the mines visited, State officials and educational institutions, and others interested in the subject.

Clean energy production from coal, oil, and gas, and the development of these and other energy sources continued to be a major objective of the energy research program of the Bureau of Mines.3 In 1971 increased emphasis was placed on the production of fluid fuels and chemicals from coal. Advances were achieved in the development of the Synthane and Hydrane gasification processes for producing pipeline gas from coal (page 31), and progress was made in research on solid wastes utilization (page 2), and on liquid fuels production from coal (page 37); Coal mine safety, solid waste disposal and utilization, coal preparation and transport, and fundamental research on coal and related products also continued to be the subject of extensive research. Improved methods for extracting petroleum and natural gas without surface and subsurface pollution featured research on these vital fuel and energy sources. This research was highlighted by studies of the fracturing systems of reservoir rocks, including subsurface fracture mapping and new fracturing techniques to achieve optimum production of oil and gas (page 52). Of equal importance were projects on oil recovery by water or gas flooding (page 52), by steam injection (page 57), on the identification of oil spills (page 63), and on means to reduce vehicular exhaust emissions (page 66).

"Vast amounts of time and money are spent fighting flow problems in plants that involve the handling or processing of industrial minerals. Because these types of projects tend to be capitalintensive, the right decisions, made at the design stage, can have a substantial positive effect on the economics of the project.Some of the problems related to solids flow in mineral processing plants include:•,Flow stoppages•,Uncontrolled flow•,Segregation of blended materials•,Build-up and dead material resulting in loss of live capacityUnfortunately few Universities in North America provide courses in the design or selection of bulk solids handling equipment, let alone the theory of bulk solids flow, with the result that engineers do not fully appreciate the effects of bulk solids handling on their process. The usual method of selecting “standard” equipment, all too often, leaves plant operators hammering on hoppers to promote flow, a technique that is not only usually ineffective but also unsafe and often causes damage to equipment. In short, too little consideration is given, at the design stage of projects, to the particular material and operating environment involved and how these will affect handling between process steps.This paper seeks to give a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory including flow patterns and flow property tests, and presents functional design guidelines to ensure reliable flow. As well, a case history will be presented. Our message is clear: To ensure uniform, reliable flow, a plant design must take into account the specific flow characteristics of the bulk solid to be handled or processed."

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. San Manuel has been a modern prodigy from its inception to its present status as a block-caving operation producing 33,000 tons per day. The deposit was discovered, prospected, and developed with modern techniques, and nearly all planning was done from results of an extensive drilling program through an average overburden of 670 feet. The Federal Government had a prominent part in the discovery and primary development of San Manuel. The first 17 holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines, and discovery of the large, low-grade, disseminated copper deposit is credited to the Bureau. A loan fund of 94 million was granted through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the San Manuel Copper Corp. for development of the deposit and erection of concentrating and smelting facilities. Then, while the mine was still being developed, the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted to buy a large amount of copper at a pegged price.

Today, with a stringent economic and environmental climate prevailing in the copper business, there is increased interest in evaluating new processing alternatives for production. Hydrometallurgical pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is one of the more viable approaches and several technological candidates have emerged. Of these, an overlooked but, ironically the first industrially proven methodology, utilized nitrogen species catalyzation in the oxidizing pressure leach system to produce copper via SX/EW. Given its many inherent process advantages, this may prove to be a feasible process alternative for the future. In this paper, the history of the system and its application to copper concentrates and ores will be outlined. In particular, a novel methodology for effective recovery of precious metals from chalcopyrite concentrates will be discussed. Finally, the perceived economics of chalcopyrite concentrate treatment with this unique industrially proven process will be delineated.

The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. "The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

The inplace cyanidation leaching of gold from placer deposits is a potential method for treating gravels too deeply buried and too low in gold content to be processed economically by conventional dredging methods. Laboratory experiments were made to evaluate those placer cyanidation factors adaptable to small-scale studies. The variables investigated included gold particle size and location in sand beds, cyanide solution flow rate, and cyanide solution strength as factors affecting gold solubility rates. The solution flow rate, in turn, was influenced by variables such as bed slope, solution head pressure, and sand size, and the effects of these factors were studied. Free gold, minus 150-mesh and finer in size, is rapidly dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions from mixtures of gold and silica sand prepared to simulate placer deposits. About 94 percent of minus 325-mesh free gold was extracted in 5 hours from silica sand mixtures, and 94 percent extraction of minus 150-mesh gold was obtained in 21 hours with 0.1 percent NaCN solutions. Moving solutions were almost twice as effective in leaching free gold from silica sand mixtures than stagnant solutions.

Mines and plants for sale, downsizing, bankruptcies, consolidation, slab imports, minimill growth displacing traditional integrated steel-making. These are some issues for North American iron ore and integrated steel producers. But the blast furnace still remains the workhorse of the ironmaking industry. And direct reduction and other alternate ironmaking technologies have yet to make any serious inroads in North America. How come? This article addresses the current state of primary ironmaking in the changing North American steel industry, the direct reduction market and new technologies under development that may hold some promise.

Jackleg drill operators are exposed to harmful levels of hand-arm vibration (HAV). Anti-vibration handles and gloves provide modest reductions in HAV exposures and forearm muscle exertion from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves by jackleg drill operators. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate changes in HAV with the use of anti-vibration gloves and handles compared to forearm muscle exertion experienced by operators and measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Five subjects operated the drill under four different cases: no anti-vibration controls, anti-vibration gloves only, anti-vibration handle only, and simultaneous anti-vibration handle and glove use. Muscle exertion was expressed as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) and was compared using Welch’s ANOVA with Games-Howell post hoc comparisons. The case with both anti-vibration controls in use simultaneously (largest grip diameter) was associated with a mean %MVC of 36.13% during operation for all forearm muscles combined, which was significantly higher than that of the other cases (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in mean HAV exposures. The anti-vibration handle with anti-vibration glove case only increased the maximum allowable exposure time by 8 min as compared to the control case without any anti-vibration controls. These results suggest that the modest HAV exposure reductions from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves may pale in comparison to the increased muscle exertion resulting from their use, and this trade-off among jackleg drill operators is a potential concern that warrants further investigation.

The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. Composite ores are more often used for production of iron in connection with reserve depletion of traditional ore crude in the regions with developed metallurgy. In particular, the majority of perspective ferrum-ore deposits of the Urals are presented by titanferous magnetite ores which contain a significant amount of titanium and vanadium alongside with ferrum. Thus, the deposits of titanferous magnetites of the Southern Urals on the average contain about 20 % of Fe, 8,7 % TiO2 and 0,24 % V2O5. Due to a high content of titanium oxides it is impossible or it is inexpedient to process such ores in blast furnaces. During work just on titanferous magnetite ore refractory titanium-containing slags are formed in a blast furnace, and in case of its dilution by ores of different types the titanium due to the small content in slag is thrown out. It is often impossible to separate such ores into ferriferous and titanferous concentrates because ferrum and titanium are present in the same minerals. This work attempts to selectively reduce ferrum in solid oxide and to separate metallic iron from titanferousslag with fast fusion. Solid-phase reduction of ferrum has been carried out with carbon at temperature of 1000? 1300°?. In products of solid-phase reduction the extremely disperse mix of metal iron and only partially reduced titanium oxides have been achieved. It is impossible to separate such a mix mechanically. However, the fast fusion of the mix allowed separating it into cast iron and slag with the high content of titanium. Thus the cast iron contained less than 0,1 % of titanium, and the slag did not contain practically any ferrum.

After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017.
