Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler's ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler's ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler's ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. The Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) is a new method introduced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to assist the underground stone mine operator in 1) assessing defects the mine strata and 2) rating the relative roof fall risk these defects pose. The RFRI utilizes observational techniques to identify defects in the roof strata caused by local geologic, stress, and mining conditions. Assessment values for ten defined defect categories provides the foundation for estimating a range of risk conditions between 0 and 100 that define the potential for a roof fall. This paper examines how the defect information is collected using two field verification sites and proposes methods to analyze the RFRI data. These examples provide information on how well the method replicates observed conditions and how it might be applied in practice.

Throughout history, many of the world's achievements, conflicts and problems can be traced to the demand for minerals. With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

Outcomes from a workshop organized through the SAIMM revealed that the minerals and metals industry must develop its ?Engineering Team? if it is to continue to meet the challenges of globalization. The very economy of the country is largely dependent on a competitive and stable engineering team within the minerals and metals sector. With the Chamber of Mines (COM) passing on its education and training initiatives to the industry, the professional bodies like SAIMM must (despite meagre resources) continue the good work done through the COM in the past. The workshop highlighted recruitment and selection, further/higher education, socialization and initial training, deployment and retention and continuing education as priority areas. These are further detailed in this report. Office Bearers have considered the outcomes and the areas where the Institute should or should not be involved have been stated.

Before beginning any site development or mineral extraction activity, it has been well documented that it is first prudent to gain an understanding of the prevailing geologic conditions.Whether it’s identifying the depth to type of bedrock, or determining the quality and quantity of the in place mineral deposit, these factors should always be considered in a project’s fatal flaw analysis. In situations where there is limited subsurface information, geologic models have been proven to be one of the most valuable and cost-effective tools used by the developer and/or his consultant.

Asímismo, se realiza en la Franja Aurífera Nazca-Ocoña que alberga innumerables minas y depósitos en vetas angostas como Arirahua, San Juan de Chorunga, Chalhuane, Las Clavelinas, María Eugenia, entre otros. La alteración es básicamente argílica en la vecindad de las vetas y propilítica hacia el exterior.

Multiple seam mining interactions caused by full extraction mining, whether due to undermining or overmining, frequently involve tensile failure of the affected mine roof. The adverse ground control conditions may prevent mining for both safety and economic reasons. Prior researchers have identified the geometric, geologic and mining factors controlling multiple seam mining interactions. This numerical study examines the mechanics of these interactions using a modeling procedure that 1) incorporates the essential constitutive behavior of the rock such as strain-softening of the intact rock and shear and tensile failure along bedding planes and 2) captures the geologic variability of the rock especially the layering of weak and strong rocks and weak bedding planes. Specifically, the numerical study considered the effect of vertical stress, interburden thickness, and the immediate roof quality of the affected seam in both undermining and overmining situations. The models show that for overburden-to-interburden thickness (OB/IB) ratios of less than 5, interactions do not occur, and that for OB/IB more than 50, extreme interaction is a certainty. In between, the possibility of an interaction was found to depend on gob width-to-interburden thickness ratio, site specific geology and horizontal stress to rock strength ratio in addition to the OB/IB ratio. The models also showed that horizontal stress was profoundly altered well above or below a full extraction area and that these changes are likely to influence the success or failure of multiple seam mining. The role of horizontal stress in multiple seam mining interactions has received little attention in prior investigations. Four factors control the mechanics of multiple seam mining interactions: 1. vertical stress concentration 2. horizontal stress concentration 3. stress re-direction 4. bedding plane slip bands A combination of vertical and horizontal stress increase and high stress gradients in the vicinity of full extraction areas re-orients principal stresses into a very unfavorable direction. This seemingly small stress re-orientation has a profound adverse effect on bedded rock.

Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

NZ Steel's flushing slag typically contains 1.2 per cent V203. Extraction of vanadium from powdered slag using a salt (NaCI or Na2CO3) roast/leach process was investigated. With NaCl, optimum extraction conditions were a charge containing 10 per cent NaCI, roasting in air at 875°C for 4 hours, followed by leaching in dilute H2SO4. Extractions were typically 30-50 per cent. NaCI roasting did not chemically attack the slag; the phase transformations that occurred were due to high temperature oxidation. Slag particle size had a significant effect on extraction.Optimum conditions for extracting vanadium by Na2C03 roasting were 20 per cent Na2CO3 in the charge and roasting in air for 3-4 hours at 850-875°C followed by water leaching.Na2CO3 roasting involved chemical attack that resulted in the formation of perovskite (CaTiO3) and carnegieite (NaAISiO4).The extent of vanadium extraction depended on the amount of Na2CO3 added and the original slag SiO2 content.Compared to the separate roasting treatments, simultaneous treatment with NaCI and Na2CO3 gave lower vanadium extraction, while requiring considerably higher roasting times and temperatures.

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables. A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. In Britain, a Scottish firm developed a rubber belt conveyor in which full advantage was taken of the high tensile features of wire rope, without embodying or moulding the wire rope into the rubber belt, so that the two wire ropes and the rubber...

The results of extensive field tests of a new and powerful method of hard rock excavation are presented in this report.* The method, known by the acronym REAM (Rapid Excavation and Mining), employs high velocity, smooth bore cannons to efficiently deliver energy to the rock and has been demonstrated for underground tunneling, drilling, surface benching, scaling, and secondary breakage in hard granitic rock at the Hope Valley Mine test site in California. Solid projectiles made from inexpensive materials such as concrete or steel, and weighing from 8 to 12 pounds, are launched by conventional high speed cannons and impact the rock at velocities of 5000 feet per second--an impact energy of about 4 million foot pounds (Figure 1). The energy applied at peak pressures of nearly 2 million psi over a period of tens of microseconds breaks down the rock by a complex mechanism of crushing, spalling, and initiation and propagation of fractures produced by the interaction of successive impacts and free surfaces. "The Ventura County Medical Center Hospital Replacement Wing project consists of the construction of a 2- to 3-story building with a basement encompassing the entire footprint and two corridors connecting the new hospital wing to existing buildings. The site is located in the Ventura Basin where strong ground shaking has been observed during moderate to large earthquakes on nearby faults. The upper 90 feet of the soil consists of loose to medium dense finegrained sands and low plasticity silts that are potentially susceptible to liquefaction, seismic densification, and hydroconsolidation. Ground settlement associated with a large seismic event on a nearby fault is estimated at 20 to 26 inches. To account for the anticipated ground settlement, auger pressure grouted (APG) piles gaining support below the potentially liquefiable soil were selected for the support of the proposed structure. Challenges for pile design included the anticipated earthquake-induced ground settlement, high downdrag loads, low soil lateral capacity during strong ground shaking, and the effect of pile installation on the performance of the existing adjacent buildings and the installed shoring system. The replacement hospital is supported on over 600 APG piles, with lengths varying between 120 and 140 feet. Axial pile capacities were verified with an extensive indicator pile installation program and dynamic pile load testing.INTRODUCTIONThe Hospital Replacement Wing (HRW) project is at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) in Ventura County, Southern California (Figure 1). The VCMC consists of three interconnected hospital buildings (Buildings 303, 304, and Fainer Building), the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building, two mental health buildings, a medical office building, an emergency generator building, and surface parking lots. The HRW is near the center of the campus, adjacent to several existing buildings.The HRW is a 2- to 3-story structure, with a 15- to 20-foot-deep basement beneath the entire 95,000-square-foot building footprint. The HRW project includes a Loading Dock, a four-level corridor to the Fainer Building (Fainer connector), and a two-level corridor to the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building (Café connector). The corridors are structurally separated from the existing buildings. Typical dead plus live load column loads for the HRW range from about 635 kips to 935 kips and total loads range from about 860 kips to 1,295 kips."

"‘Gas hydrate’ is the common term for a solid material formed from the combination of various gases as ‘guest’ and water as ‘host’. A series of large-scale scientific drilling and coring programmes conducted since 2000 revealed that natural gas hydrate exists in a wide variety of accumulations in the sediments. The scaled-up onshore and offshore field production tests during the last decade show that gas production technology will be realized to make gas production from gas hydrates viable in the future, recognizing its potentials as one of the future sustainable energy resources.The total produced gas was approximately 470 m3 by the hot water circulation method over 6 days of operation in the permafrost-associated Mallik 2002 project in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada. In the Mallik 2007-2008 project, the gas was successfully produced stably by the depressurization method for 6 days, up to 13,000 m3 cumulatively. The depressurization method applied in the Mallik test was shown to be an effective way to produce gas from gas hydrates. The Alaska field trial to inject mixed gas of CO2 and N2 to exchange CH4 in 2012 was successfully done for the first time to produce maximum 1,270 m3 per day. A remarkable achievement was made by Japan when it completed its first offshore production test in the Eastern Nankai Trough, producing approximately 120,000 m3 of methane by the depressurization method over 6 days in March 2013. The technical challenges and scientific uncertainties obtained from Nankai Trough production test provide Korea with more considerations as to the aspects of well completion, reservoir formation and seafloor stability, sand control, flow assurance, environmental monitoring, and etc., due to the different geological setting and geomechanical properties of the Ulleung Basin in Korea."

Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined.
