The first commercially available portable gamma ray-neutron beryllium detector, the Rerylometer, was developed by the same group that developed the first practical portable scintillation counter, the Scintillo-meter. This group includes Professor George Brownell, of the Geology Department of the University of Manitoba in winnipeg, and his associates, K. I. Roulston, R. w. Pringle, and R. L. Funt, of the Physics and Engineering Departments of the University of Manitoba. A prototype model was tested in the field by Dr. Brownell during the summer of 1958. Commercial production was undertaken shortly thereafter by Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., of Winnipeg, and a license for manufacture and distribution in the U.S. was granted to Isotopes Specialties Co., of Burbank, California, a division of Nuclear Corporation of America. Early in 1959, we were retained by the 'Mining Division of Minerva Oil Co. to Legin a search throughout North America for minable deposits of beryllium, and to train members of their permanent staff to continue the program. The project included literature sur-veys, interviews with members of various federal, state, and provincial agencies, scanning of our own collection of suites of specimens from various mineral occurrences, and the examination of deposits in the field. The value of a beryllium detector to this program was obvious and arrangements were made to procure one as soon as possible, which resulted in our obtaining and using the first instrument that was produced commercially in the U. S. In addition to the commercially available Berylometer, Mr. William Vaughan and his associates, of the U. S. Geological Survey Geophysics Division, in Denver, have developed and tested several experimental instruments based on the same principles. DETECTOR Principles The detection of beryllium is based on the fact that "hard" gamma rays (1.6 MEV and geater), such as those produced by Antimony convert ordinary beryllium (Be9) to Be8 , with the release of a neutron. The neutrons are counted by a scintillator designed to favor neutron responses while suppressing those of gamma rays. 'The instrument is completely selective for beryllium. No other element can interfere. Instrunlentation The Rerylometer itself, which is cylindrical, is about 8 inches in diameter, 13 inches high, and weighs about 11 pounds. (Figs. 1, 2). The principal components include: 1. A disc of wax to moderate (or "thermalize") neutrons. 2. A boron-enriched polyester-zinc-sulphide fluorescent screen. This material produces strong flashes when struck by thermalized neutrons but only weak flashes from gamma rays. 3. A photomultiplier tube. 4. An electronic circuit, complete with one srnall 71/2-volt dry battery. In general a term "unconventional mining or "non-traditional mining technology" getting more and move familiar to the mining engineering media. There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. Principal scheme of unconventional coal mining technology is shown in [Figure 1:] One of the greatest potential for coal utilisation during the beginning decades of on coming cetury is the synthetic fuel-gas derived from coal as a product of coal gasification. It is quite logical to enrich this gas before burning it with natural gas, that is methane, contained in coal measures. Thus it is reasonable to suggest a new concept of unconventional coal mining and utilization technology featuring integrated methane drainage with coal-gas combined cycle. Proposed unconventional technology of coal mining is characterized with: - opening up a coat deposit through boreholes, drilled from the surface and used for coalbed methane drainage as well as for coat gasification in situ; - aggregation of methane producing and coal gasification station on mining side with thermo power plant on the electric power generation side in one integrated industrial enterprise. The further improvement of the conventional coal mining technologies both surface and underground could give only insignificant results in economical, ecological and social aspects, but would not be able to provide basic requirements of the XXI-st century. Significant increase in economical efficiency, cardinal humanization of coal mining and basic improvements in environment protection would be achieved through introduction and implementation of innovative or unconventional coal mining technology. These considerations are applied on both coal production and coal utilization sides as far as coat based energy generation is concerned. Now a general opinion is widely spread that an application in the same manner of the traditional technologies of coal mining and electric power generation would inevitably cause further irreversible damage of the global eco-system, notwithstanding the certain environment protection measures being taken. Keeping the recent pace of the eco-system degradation the whole our civilization would be in danger. Thus the solution of this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing in industry unconventional coal mining and modern advanced clean coal technologies. Coal reserves with favourable conditions at shallow depths are -being rapidly depleted in all countries with developed coal industry. So in nearest future more coat will be mined from deeper levels with higher operational expences and with lower labour productivity. For example in Russia only 20% of proven coal reserves can be specified in quality as easy mined reserves, i.e. coal reserves with a good minability. Unconventional (borehole in situ) coal mining enables us to mine difficult coal reserves, deposited under unfavourable geological conditions with higher economical and socio-ecological efficiency than that in conventional coal mining, in view of these the basic principles and concepts of coal mining and coal utilization for energy generation should be reconsidered taking into account the latest achievments in underground coal gasification/combustion, coalbed methane extraction, clean coat technology and advanced developments in environmental engineering. The authors have developed a new concept of ecologically clean and resource saving coal-gas electricity, protected by a patent of Russian Federation (1995). The main principles and technological features of these conceptual technologies are explained hereupon. It should be a break through into a coal mining technology of new generation, which is known as unconventional coal mining technology. Under current global energy policy, transection to the new generation of coal mining technology is inevitable. Now we are standing at the treshhold of the coat's regeneration based on integrated unconventional coal mining and innovative coal fueled electric generation technologies.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation of copper electrowinning from electrolytes produced by solvent extraction. The purpose of the research was to gain a better understanding of the fundamental relationship between copper electrowinning conditions, anode corrosion, and cathode purity. Processing variables were evaluated in a cyclic semicontinuous system in which the depleted electrolyte was used to strip copper from loaded organic extractant. For the production of high quality copper cathodes, the electrolyte was dosed with cobalt and stripped of organic solvent extraction reagent. An optimum cobalt addition of 60 ppm, and removal of the entrained extractant with activated carbon provided the best conditions for electrowinning copper containing the least amount of lead and controlling anode corrosion. As little as 13 ppm of the entrained organic extractant, LIX 64-N, significantly accelerated anode corro-sion. However, the addition of 1,000 ppm of organic diluent kerosine did not affect anode corrosion. After cobalt dosing and removing the entrained extractant, cathodes containing less than 2 ppm lead were consistently electrowon at widely varied current densities, electrolyte copper and acid concentrations, and temperatures. Dosing of the electrolyte with selected impurities including magnesium, aluminum, manganese, and iron did not affect the cathode purity. However, 0.05 giL of chloride ions markedly increased anode corrosion and the sub-sequent transfer of lead to the cathode copper.

This paper has been written to describe briefly the mining and milling of gold and silver ores in the Black Canyon and neighboring mining districts in Yavapai County, Ariz. The description of present operations is the result of a 10-day visit to the region by the writer in March 1936. A post grouted drilled shaft foundation system was successfully used in place of the specified driven pile foundation system as a Value Engineering Cost Proposal (VECP) for the new PGA Boulevard Grade Separation Project. Pressure grouting the cohesionless sandy soils at the drilled shaft base significantly increased the end bearing capacity and stiffness allowing drilled shafts to be the more cost effective foundation system. The post grouted drilled shaft option also provided other benefits including reducing owners risk normally associated with pile driving vibrations and offered a high level of quality assurance for the drilled shafts. This paper discusses the implementation of post grouted drilled shafts from design to completion of construction. A design procedure for post grouted drilled shafts developed by the University of South Florida was used for initial VECP evaluation. Prior to construction, two instrumented test shafts were installed and load tested, one of which was post grouted. Therein, the design procedure was calibrated, tip elevations for production shafts were refined, drilled shaft construction and grouting procedures were demonstrated, and a grouting criteria was developed for the project.

This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

"An ideal procedure to determine the limits of flotation-based separation, as is the case with washability analysis for density separation, does not exist. Therefore, a procedure called release analysis, considered to be the counterpart of the washability process in density separation, was developed to evaluate the flotation characteristics of coal fines. Since flotation is a complex process it is necessary to know the maximum recoverable yield that could be achieved at a target ash level and what could be obtained by release analysis. Due to a number of limitations in the initial procedures, modifications were recommended by various researchers to generate an optimum separation curve. This paper presents a review of, and a discussion on, the chronological evolution of release analysis methodology over the decades. Notwithstanding the availability of a standardized release analysis procedure, such as BS 7530, the paper highlights the critical parameters involved in the procedures, such as coal type, feed characteristics, choice of reagents and dosage, operator bias, and design features of the flotation cell IntroductionCoal is a heterogeneous substance consisting of various combustible constituents (macerals) and associated mineral matter. The kind and abundance of the various macerals present in the coal, such as vitrinite, semivitrinite, exinite, and inertinite, determine the type of coal. As macerals are formed by biological degradation of different parts of the plant material, they have different properties based on their original composition. Coal cleaning processes are dependent on the differences in physical properties between the coal components (the macerals) and also between the macerals and the mineral matter. Thus the cleaning characteristics of the coal might vary from one type to the next. The cleaning processes influence the distribution and the concentration of macerals in the various size and density fractions of the cleaned product."

The Bureau of Mines investigated beryllium resources, production methods, and production costs to estimate the quantity of beryllium available for future use. Eight mining districts and 12 deposits are included in the study; lack of data precluded the evaluation of resources from 6 nonproducing and undeveloped deposits. The study revealed that demonstrated beryllium-bearing resources should be sufficient to meet domestic needs and those of other market economy countries (MEC's) well into the 21st century. Total demonstrated beryllium-bearing in situ resources from MEC's are estimated at 118 million metric tons (Mmt) of ore containing approximately 33,000 mt beryllium metal. Approximately 111 Mmt ore containing 29,000 mt beryllium was included in the cost analysis and availability sections of this study. Three Brazilian districts currently produce beryl ore, and one domestic company, Brush Wellman Inc., produces bertrandite ore. Brush Wellman Inc. owns and operates the only MEC facility in the Western Hemisphere for extracting beryllium values from beryl and bertrandite and is the beryllium industry's only fully integrated corporation.

The choice of which mining method to use at many large surface coal mines is often dicated by what machinery is available or what experience the mine management can offer. One of the most significant surface coal mines in Turkey is owned and operated by the Turkish National Coal Board, located to the west of the city of Kütahya. The Seyitömer Lignite Enterprise (SLE) extracts low quality coal, the majority of which is supplied to an adjacent power station. The coal seems at SLE contain bands of ash which under normal mining conditions are extracted with the coal. This increases the ash content of the run of mine coal and results in lower efficiency at the power station and financial penalties for SLE. In this paper, therefore, selection of the best possible equipment and production method was identified to achieve high selective mining at SLE. The research found that two different high selective mining methods were suitable for selective excavation of the B3 seam, which were hydraulic excavator and truck and surface miner and truck combinations. It was also found that high selective excavation could provide the desired coal quality at 52% lower costs when the whole process (excavation, transportation, processing, etc.) was considered. Significant progress has been made in the past decade in determining the load bearing capacity of pile foundations. Developments in the means of prediction of pile capacity as limited by soil strength have been substantial, particularly in the use of dynamic methods. The use of currently available equipment, analytical procedures, and practices in the field, will often produce material economies on a job by allowing increased loads with proven factors of safety. This approach justifies the minimum number of piles required for a safe foundation in a wide range of job sizes and soil conditions. To avoid exposing the reader to excessive detail in the body of this paper, technical topics have been covered more thoroughly in several appendices. I. Wave Equation Analysis of Piles Appendix A II. Dynamic Monitoring and the Pile Driving Analyzer Appendix B III. Case Method Capacity Calculation Appendix C IV. Case Pile Wave Analysis Program Appendix D 1 Preliminary Analysis In designing driven pile foundations, there must be a close relationship between design, construction control procedures, driving practices, and the size of the job. Small commercial buildings or residences involving loads that are only a fraction of the pile capacities do not justify the expense of detailed design processes or elaborate construction controls. Nevertheless, some preliminary analysis of the job requirements and a limited subsurface investigation must be made to understand existing conditions and the possible foundation solutions. In other words, it is necessary to determine that driven piling is the best overall choice of foundation.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

"SynopsisCommencement of the next phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a year or so away from becoming reality. Some 50 km of tunnels in the form of access adits, shafts, diversion tunnels, and main waterways will be constructed. Sprayed concrete will form an integral part of the temporary and permanent rock support systems that will be installed. Furthermore, the use of sprayed concrete as a final tunnel lining solution was proposed as a viable alternative to concrete linings in the feasibility studies that preceded the forthcoming implementation phase.The aim of this paper is to make the reader aware of all the sprayed concrete related issues that engineers tend to grapple with during the design and construction of tunnel projects and other underground works. Primarily, these issues would include selection of applicable design parameters, technical specifications, construction application methods, quality control and, most importantly in the context of final or permanent linings, the durability of sprayed concrete.The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 12 has been tasked specifically to publish a set of recommendations on the Quality and Control of the Application of Sprayed Concrete and the Testing of Sprayed Concrete for Durability. These tasks were also further explored at the recent World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2015) that was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia at the end of May 2015.IntroductionSprayed concrete is presented in a variety of shapes, designs, forms, application methods and accompanying terminologies including shotcrete, gunite, pneumatically applied concrete, and the like. The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) decided to standardize on a single terminology, namely ‘sprayed concrete’, in order to simplify specification, interpretation of guidelines, and codes of practice."

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

This publication describes a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of devices and methods used for testing and splicing 4,160-volt and 440-volt cables and for providing ground-fault protection for 440-volt circuits, as developed and used by the electrical staff of the Tecumseh coal mine, an open-pit operation at Boonville, Ind. The testing and ground-fault devices described should find ready application in other open-pit mines, and, with suitable modifications for voltages involved, in underground mining. The devices and testing methods are based on sound engineering principles and are time-tested and economically feasible, Four devices are used: A high-voltage tester, and a low-voltage high- current tester, both for testing 4,160-volt cables; a tester for 440-volt cables; and, electronic ground-fault protective device for 440-volt cable circuits. All the cable testers and the grounding device were designed and built at the mine from standard parts. They are inexpensive, dependable, and job tested, An attempt has been made here to describe them in enough detail so that interested persons can assemble duplicate units.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

The Bureau of Mines, through a cooperative agreement with Duquesne Light Co. of Pennsylvania, field tested a method of using pneumatic stowing of crushed limestone to construct seals in long-abandoned mine openings that were part of an active mine closed shortly before sealing. A total of 13 openings at 11 sites were backfilled. In pneumatic stowing, material is conveyed through a pipeline and into the mine opening under low air pressure. The stowing equipment consists of a power sup-ply, a blower, a feeder to inject material into the pipeline, and a nozzle for directing the placement. Material is ejected from the nozzle at high velocity, creating a high-compaction fill upon impact. The fill material used was well-graded limestone aggregate up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, with sufficient fines. This fill was modified at five locations by the addition of portland cement, expansive cement, and/or bentonite. The pneumatic stowing method is safer and faster than conventional methods, is cost competitive, and eliminates or reduces the exposure of workers to possible hazards since the nozzle can be kept outside the mine opening. The equipment is mobile, but some modifications in the technique would improve performance. The technique was used at remote locations where other methods could not be used without disturbing the environment.

A conversão da energia cinética dos ventos em energia elétrica é realizada por aerogeradores, que são acopladas em torres, que na sua maioria são constituídas de anéis sobrepostos de aço, os quais são fabricados e montados com o emprego de várias etapas de soldagem. Em função disso, o conhecimento da soldabilidade dos aços estruturais é um fator importante para indústria eólica, dando subsídios para a elaboração de procedimentos que permitam a redução dos custos de soldagem e a seleção adequada dos aços empregados. Este trabalho objetivou a avaliação da soldabilidade do aço estrutural EN 10025-4 S355M através de ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos de juntas soldadas pelo processo de arco submerso (SAW) em duas diferentes técnicas: Single Arc e Tandem Arc. Os resultados mostraram que o aço S355M apresentou excelente soldabilidade, com destaque para o processo SAW Tandem Arc, o que possibilita a maior exploração desta técnica como uma excelente alternativa para a redução do tempo de soldagem durante a fabricação de torres eólicas.
