The paper discusses these issues and offers guidance for improved design.

The acid-ferric sulfate leaching of low-grade sulfide copper mine waste provides more than 10 percent of the U.S. supply of new copper, but recoveries and leaching rates are very low. In Federal Bureau of Mines research to improve the leaching process, experiments on 5- to 10-ton lots of mine-run ore were more revealing than bench-scale tests on fine ore. This report discusses the results obtained by leaching run-of-mine and minus 6-inch plus 112-inch samples of low-grade chalcocite-bearing mine waste. The samples were leached for 461 days and 61.6 and 37.7 percent of the copper was extracted from the minus 6-inch plus -112-inch and run-of- mine samples, respectively. A mixed kinetics model was applied successfully to the leaching of the sample with the fines removed where bulk solution transport was not rate controlling. The model, when applied to the run-of- mine ore, gave somewhat higher predicted copper extractions than experimentally determined. Subsequently, oxygen was introduced into the run-of- mine ore, leaching continued for an additional 312 days, and an additional 53.0 percent of the copper was extracted. Before the leaching experiment was dismantled and the residue sampled, the ore was treated with sulfur dioxide and its permeability was improved markedly. The results of each of these procedures are interpreted in relation to the attendant condition of the test.

In this study the characteristic factors and formation mechanisms for the hydrothermal preparation of a -quartz crystal powders were investigated to find the optimum synthetic conditions. The degree of Q -quartz crystal face development depended on the relative growth rate of a particular form that varies considerably with the degree of supersaturation, the reaction temperature, the concentration of mineralizers, and the presence of seed crystals in the feedstock. Alkali hydroxides and alkali halides were found to be effective in the reactions as mineralizers, which added in order to increase the solubility of the feedstock. The fine Q -quartz crystal powders were obtained in the temperature range of 250-450% and pressure range of 100-300atm. As the concentration of mineralizers increased, the particle size of crystalline powders became smaller at lower reaction temperatures. The fractional size distribution of synthetic crystal powders was depended on the hydrothermal conditions. As the reaction time and the amount of seed crystals increased, the width of particle size distribution became narrower. The weight mean particle size was in the range of 1 to 10m. The characterization of the products were carried out using XRD. SEM. PSA, FT-IR, Raman spectrometer.

Steel manufacture in VOD procedure needs a very attentive correlation and pursuit of the technological stages ,on the background of keeping the influence factors within best performances zones. For a better co-ordination of the main stages specific to this process ,this work presents a detailed study of the optimization possibilities for each stages ,beginning with the furnace charging ,going on with the pre-aftinage and aftinage stages in the electrical furnace and then with the refinement stages in the VOD installation. One has intended the effective emphasis of the main influence factors with global implications on the process and especially on the purity and quality of the stainless steel ,Among the main novelties proposed by this work , we can emphasize the following: - a computer assisted charging method ,with the possibility of using a large scale of wastage, also respecting the density proportions of the components of the charges; - the advanced recuperation of the elements of the charge by reducing the combustion of the valuable elements ; - the optimization of the oxygen blast conditions and of the aftinage stage ,by establishing some calculations concerning critical carbon content , that requires the oxidation to be continued very carefully; - the simulation of the thermic and chemical parameters by modeling the alloying process of the stainless steel in the case of some large amounts of additions.

"Furnace resistance is a function of the complex interrelationship between many factors including: operating practice, slag conductivity, temperature, power intensity, and geometry (electrode shape, diameter, spacing, immersion, slag depth, etc.).Accurate prediction of resistance is critical for success of the overall furnace design. The sizing of electrodes, columns, bus-bars, and transformers are all impacted. Estimation of minimum and maximum resistance or maximum operational current, as well as the maximum operating voltage are of fundamental importance.Various mathematical tools have been developed to assist designers with the selection of furnace dimensions and the prediction of resistance. Elkem found the methods of Downing and Urban 1965 and Westly 1975, to be particularly useful.In the current paper, comparisons are drawn between data from spent aluminum pot lining (SPL) demonstration testing at Elkem Bjolvefossen and predictions based on these classical tools and 3D finite element modeling (FEM) with COMSOL.®"

The Onsan copper smelter of LS-Nikko Copper Inc. has operated the Mitsubishi continuous process along with Outokumpu process since 1997. Mitsubishi process is a bath smelting process which needs adequate melts for smelting reaction in the furnace. After a campaign shutdown it requires time to make a start melt. Onsan smelter has had much experience in flash smelting, including the improvement of the concentrate burner which is one of the most important parts in a flash smelting furnace. Based on this experience, the lances of the Mitsubishi smelting furnace were modified in order to making the starter melt with flash reaction. In 2004, the flash reaction in the Mitsubishi S-furnace was completed and was able to make the starter melt using these modified lances. Although at that time it was still under development it reduced the time required to make the initial bath-melt by about half.

In the Kokkola zinc smelter, as in most other zinc roasting plants, there is now a trend towards using concentrates with an increasing impurity content. This also often means that the size distribution of the concentrates gets finer. Iron is present in sulfidic zinc concentrates with the highest percentage as a single impurity. The behavior of iron in zinc roasting was studied in laboratory experiments. Commercial zinc concentrates with a low and high (1.5 - 16 wt-%) iron content as pyrite or in the sphalerite lattice were oxidized to various degrees to establish the reaction mechanisms of iron in roasting. Microscopy studies were carried out on the calcine, and the findings were presented in numerous photographs of the polished cross sections. SEM/EDS techniques were used for analyzing the phases and particle morphologies present in the samples. An oxidation mechanism of zinc concentrates with a high iron content was suggested.

Semisolid metal processing of metallic alloys takes advantage of the thixotropic behavior of material with non-dendritic microstructure to produce near-net-shape components with improved mechanical properties. The much higher apparent viscosity of the semisolid billet limits the risk of oxide formed on the free surfaces to become incorporated into the easting during the process. But, the external-skin on the periphery of the billet, which is often partially solidified and contaminated with lubricants, should not be included into the casting as this can be a cause of reject for most structural parts. In this paper, a preliminary model is set-up using the LS-DYNA SPH formulation to follow the paths of the skin. Calculations carried out show that this approach appears to be very promising to predict the paths of contaminated skins into semisolid castings. It can then be utilized to design suitable molds and gating systems.

A technique was developed for low pressure diamond synthesis using a specially prepared glassy carbon. The glassy carbon is produced in the form of solid plates by slow carbonization process of phenol formaldehyde resin interrupted at temperatures of 1273° K, 1073° K, and 923° K. The diamond synthesis is performed using cobalt plates as a catalyst-solvent. Synthesis was carried out at applied pressures of 6.0 and 3.8 GPa and a temperature of 1970° K and 2170° K. The products were analyzed by the x-ray powder dyffraction method and by microprobe to identify the diamond crystallites. The samples were taken from the place of contact between the glassy carbon and the cobalt catalyst. They were separated from the charge by a chemical method. Diamonds of the best form and the largest size were obtained at pressures that were much lower than those used in the traditional graphite method of diamond synthesis.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the free energy minimization method were performed for the system Ti-Fe-Mn-0-C1-C in order to evaluate the chemistry associated with the chlorination of an ilmenitic concentrate using CCl4. In the calculations various weight ratios of FeTi03/ CC14, a , were considered, which varied between 0.32 to 0.98 at temperatures ranging from 673 K to 1273 K , at atmospheric pressure. The results obtained indicated that the operating conditions for a process in a packed bed reactor, which implies the chlorination of both Fe and Ti, are 0.39 < a < .49 at T 1173 K.

Most electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) treatment processes employ carbon as a reducing agent for the zinc oxide in the EAFD. In the present work, the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon in the present of various additives was studied. The effects of temperature and the additives of calcium carbonate, magnetite, and mill scale on the kinetics of the reduction reaction were measured in the temperature range of 1173 K - 1373 K under nitrogen atmosphere using a weight-loss technique. The mill scale is one of byproducts generated from the steel rolling process. From the experimental results, it was concluded that all three additives accelerates the reaction rate of zinc oxide with carbon, but the effect of addition of calcium carbonate is the highest. It was also found that magnetite, mill scale, and calcium carbonate in the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon promotes the carbon gasification reaction.

Undergraduate courses have not done this well in the past. Much has been written in this field, and there have been great advances in understanding. However, much of what has been published is superficial and sometimes misleading, and there is as yet no coherent, single account that can serve as an introduction or overview for mineral industry graduates. This paper presents an outline which can guide readers in developing an understanding of the topic and its relevance to their work. Key references are provided, particularly those accessible on the internet, which will serve to introduce the reader to the important principles and understandings. The guide should also be useful to academics preparing students to work in the minerals and metal production sectors.

Applying the latest information technologies in mining and metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to management and technical teams. Emerging component design is changing the way the user relates to the desktop. Connectivity between mining and metallurgical process operations and their business systems has become a reality. Expanded use of plant information on the desktop is a standard tool for revenue improvement, cost reduction and adherence to production constraints. The industrial component desktop support access to information for continuous improvement and innovation by staff personnel and engineers. Collaboration between groups enables the implementation of an overall process effectiveness index based on losses due to equipment availability, production recovery and quality rate. The integration of information from mining, mineral processing and metallurgical performance monitoring increases production efficiency, even when many elements cannot be measured directly. Three case studies of large mining/metallurgical complexes are highlighted.

A method of improving mineral recoveries from ores by modifying the physical and chemical properties of minerals using radioisotope radiation was tested. It was observed that irradiation modifies mineral cell sizes, changes the crystal structure of some minerals, reduces the sulfur content 1 to 1.5 % in sulfides, changes the zeta potential, alters the surface properties of mineral grains I and produces other changes. Preliminary tests indicate that accelerated electron treatment of ores in connection with mineral processing has a potential for improving mineral recoveries by flotation and by magnetic separations.

A century ago the AIME meeting of 1899 was held at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco California in September. For his presidential address, James Douglas presented this paper which is reprinted in full with the kind permission of the AIME. It presents an interesting comparison relating to events and circumstances in the metallurgical industries at the close of last century. Being on the eve of a new century ourselves, the Editors of this volume of the COPPER 99-COBRE 99 Proceedings considered this paper would be of general interest, hence it is included here. Douglas believed in effective interchange of technical experiences and ideas. He considered the extreme secrecy surrounding the copper works at Swansea, Wales, the world center of copper only years before the time his paper was delivered, as one key reason for its decline, (and eventual closure of all copper plants there). In his paper, the pace of developments in various sectors such as transportation (railroads, the dominant means of I transportation at the time), the iron and steel and copper industries were examined, in much the same way as one might do but on the high technology of today. James Douglas was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and spent his early life there. Forced to move to the United States for family and financial reasons, he went on to become a pioneer in the new Arizona copper industry, and with luck and good judgement with his interest in the new mining properties he also became very wealthy. Douglas was an accomplished mining and metallurgical engineer. He was the first President of Phelps Dodge and helped transform the small trading company of Anson Phelps and William Dodge into a mining giant.

"Optical microscope together with alternative wet-dry cyclic accelerated corrosion tests and XRD, SEM were employed on bridge weathering steel samples with different Mn and Ni contents which were vacuum induction melted and rolled to study their effects on the microstructure and rust layer evolution in er' containing condition. The results show that the microstructure is mainly ferrite and pearlite when Mn and Ni contents are 0.75 %, 0.42 %, respectively. Both the increase of Mn and Ni contents will make pearlite disappear while granular bainite appear, meanwhile the grain size decreases. With the increase of Mn content, the corrosion rate decreases in the initial stage, but the effect becomes little in the later stage. The increase of Ni not only improves the corrosion resistance of steel base at the initial stage but also hinders the tendency of further corrosion. As Mn content increases, a-FeOOH contents in rust layer decreases. With increase of Ni content, the content of a-FeOOH in the rust increases while that ofy-FeOOH decreases.IntroductionWeathering steels had been ~radually applied in manufacture of bridges owing to reducing the corrosion rate remarkably [I- l .Good weldability was needed for high performance bridge weathering steels. Since carbon was thought to be bad for weldability, low carbon content steel was adopted and Mn was added to amend the mechanical strength loss. Some scholars[6, 7l believed that Mn was beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance of the steel in marine atmospheric environment. Some scholars [S, 9l thought that Mn had little effect on corrosion resistance in marine atmospheric environment. Presently, the effect of Mn on bridge weathering steel in marine atmospheric environment still remained poorly understood. Ni was considered to be beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance in marine atmospheric environment [JO-l4l However, the high cost limited its application range. What would bring to the rust and corrosion by decreasing Ni content needed further research.Most researchers assumed that microstructures only affected the corrosion behavior of bare steel. But the study of Guo et al. P5l showed that the homogenous microstructures were beneficial for the corrosion resistance of steels. The effect of Mn, Ni content change on microstructure and microstructure on corrosion still remained poorly understood. In the present work, the effect of Mn and Ni on the microstructures of steel matrix, as well as the microstructures on the rust and corrosion was investigated."

There are various intermetallic compounds in the Zn-Fe system. We synthesized them at about 673K. A specimen was examined chemically and X-ray diffraction was applied to ensure the formation of intermetallic compounds. Material containing two phases was placed in a Knudsen type effusion cell and the mass spectrum studied to evaluate the vapor pressure of zinc. The thermodynamic properties of intermetallics was then evaluated through measured intensity.

As the quantity of aluminum recovered from shredder scrap continues to increase, together with increased content of aluminum in automobiles, so does the economic incentive to further upgrade shredder scrap. This upgrade will be done by sorting and recovering the aluminum by specific usable alloy compositions. The metal recycling industry infrastructure needed to deal with the increased aluminum scrap supply already exists. It is an inverted pyramid structure that in North America comprises: 3000 scrap collection yards, 200 shredders, a dozen sink-float plants and one heavy metal sorting operation. The technology for upgrading aluminum sorted from shredder scrap is already either in industrial use or in the final stages of pilot plant development. However, the current automotive aluminum recycling infrastructure will need to adjust to deal with higher volumes of the metal from aluminum-intensive vehicles that will be appearing in shredder scrap -20 years from now.
