"The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing is developing membrane production technology based on autocatalytic reduction of palladium from solution onto a unique, porous substrate. Surface membranes and catalytic structures are critically important to applications that range from hydrogen purification membranes to petroleum refining. Autocatalytic reduction processes represent a cost effective method of producing stable surface layered structures that have good working lives. These attributes are particularly important in the production of palladium alloy purification membranes used in hydrogen production. Although considerable research has investigated the interaction of hydrogen and palladium alloys, the mechanisms in play while the membranes form are not well understood. Preliminary research has identified three distinct deposition mechanisms and it appears that substantial control over the resulting membrane is possible.IntroductionPalladium-based membranes separate hydrogen from other gases because hydrogen is uniquely soluble in and readily passes through bulk palladium. As currently produced, palladium-based membranes are expensive and have short service lives. These circumstances are due in part to the lack of a complete understanding of palladium or palladium alloy deposition. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processes (CAMP), in collaboration with the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Montana Tech and the Chemistry Department at the University of Montana, is engaged in the development of new methods and materials for hydrogen purification membrane production.In membrane production, the palladium requirement depends on substrate surface properties such as surface chemistry, porosity, and roughness. Thin, defect-free membranes have been successfully produced on substrates of porous glass, alumina, and stainless steel. However, the differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of palladium membranes and porous glass or alumina substrates cause problems at operating temperatures. The use of stainless steel substrates is advantageous because stainless steels have thermal expansion coefficients similar to that of palladium and they are stable at the required operating temperatures (Wicke, E., Brodowsky, H. and Ziichner, H. ). Stainless steel is also readily available and relatively inexpensive."

"Continued emphasis on water and energy conservation with less operator attention has created a need for more sophisticated cooling tower controls. A joint Betz/ASARCO project has produced a computerized water parameter controller and automated pumpless feed unit. Interfacing the unit via radio modem to the operator control room computer allows real time system status monitoring. Incorporating SPC principles to monitor and regulate all pertinent parameters yielded enhanced water control. This paper described the system design and present the results of a six month trial.BackgroundReducing operating costs and better manpower utilization are two of the largest concerns confronting maintenance managers today. At the ASARCO plant in Amarillo, a trial has been initiated to prove that it is possible to accomplish both of these objectives by using automated cooling tower control. The system is being adapted from a unit that was designed for continuously operating cooling towers in refineries and power plants by Betz Equipment Systems Division, a subsidiary of Betz Laboratories, Inc. The System l3000™ is designed to continually monitor conditions in the cooling system and to provide adjustments to the chemical balance for corrosion and deposition control. At Asarco, the unit was installed on the Rodline cooling system which operates on an intermittent basis.The primary justification for this project is to reduce costs of the five cooling systems in the plant. Current procedures require an operator to make visual checks every two hours on the five cooling towers as well as run lab tests on the water to insure proper treatment levels. This manpower can be better utilized by controlling the towers and collecting all the data available at one central location, in this case, the boiler house."

"PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is a large-scale truck and shovel operation mining thermal-coal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The operation produces 15 million tonnes of coal and mines over 120 million bank cubic metres of overburden annually. Approximately 35 percent of the waste rock is classified as potentially acid forming. Acid drainage must therefore be managed to prevent acid formation from spoil dumps and mined-out areas.KPC aims to prevent acid production in dumps by covering potentially acid forming spoils with materials identified as non acid-forming. The covers, built to engineering standards, minimise the flux of oxygen and water to pyritic spoils, thereby controlling the oxidation reaction, and reducing ARD discharge to negligible rates. Cover designs and cover materials vary according to stability, materials availability, equipment availability, and cost effectiveness. A modified field net acid generation (NAG) test procedure has been developed at KPC to identify and segregate overburden geochemical types. This paper discusses the ARD management strategies and operational procedures adopted by KPC to manage potentially acid forming waste rock. Cia. Vale do Rio Doce is currently developing Niquel do Vermelho Project. The laterite deposit is located at Carajas Mineral Province at less than 15 km from Sossego Copper Project, scheduled for start-up in 2004. The available infrastructure, includes paved roads, large capacity railroad and port complex owned by CVRD, power supply and good quality water. The project was evaluated in the past for ferronickel production. In the late 1990s, CVRD switched its attention to investigating the usage of pressure acid leaching. The combination of good metallurgical behaviour for pressure acid leach (PAL) process route with reasonable mineable grades, and existing infrastructure justified the start of engineering studies in 2002. The project approach at the engineering phase is based on the dual objective of minimizing risks while maximizing project profitability and value. CVRD is currently completing the Niquel do Vermelho prefeasibility study. This paper outlines the main outcomes of the study and future perspectives for the project.

This paper deals with application of Super Detox? stabilization technology to the treatment of electric arc furnace dust (US-EPA listed hazardous waste KO61 ). The process has been used on approximately 170,000 tons of electric arc furnace dust. In addition to the nearly four years of commercial experience at Sterling, Illinois, the process is now being permitted for application at two other locations. The process was originally developed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and then further improved by Conversion Systems, Inc. (Bethlehem Steel's Licensee). The treatment process offers many unique bases for its selection, including: A) Low cost compared to the treatment alternatives; B) Lowest available TCLP leachate levels for any process treating K061. Many other processes leave some residue that represents a disposal requirement, although often not addressed; C) Produces minimized final waste disposed, including the fact that the total volume of dust generated and less than the volume occupied by the residue slag from HTMR; and, D) Opportunities for the beneficial utilization of part or all of the waste stream through the development of chemical and physical characteristics. Each of these aspects will be specifically discussed in the paper, including that status of the operations now under permit.

To beat capital costs of US$10 per pound of installed capacity has appeared as a major hurdle for the "third generation laterite nickel plants. Forecast costs are escalating. Where can savings come from? Ore beneficiation can reduce the tonnage rate to be processed. High pressure acid leach options include the use of indirect slurry heating and higher operating temperatures to reduce flow rates and residence time. Progress has been reported in atmospheric leaching. High counter current decantation circuit settling rates and high underflow densities reduce CCD costs. Metal recovery options include direct from leach solution to metal production, as used by Bulong and espoused by Goro, and indirect recovery as used by Moa Bay, Murrin Murrin and Cawse. Plant location impacts on the costs of tailings disposal, power and energy costs, supply of consumables and labour costs, among others. Final nickel and cobalt metal production routes are electrowinning, hydrogen reduction or some innovative routes being proposed for Goro. A recent survey of CEOs from major steel companies worldwide revealed the importance of recycling zinc units from EAF dust, mill scale, blast furnace dust, and other zinc containing streams in their plants. Many processes were developed and installed in response to this challenge. The most successful approach involves the production of a crude zinc oxide and selling it to primary zinc producers to recover the metal value. The problem with this process is the high concentration of halides in the crude oxide. This type of material cannot be processed directly in an electrolytic zinc plant because of corrosion problems it will cause in electrolysis. In 1999, BRZ installed a zinc oxide receiving and washing plant to minimize the impact of halides to its circuit. A description of the washing plant and initial operating results are included.

"The need for large quantities of oxygen for use in metallurgical processes was a major driving force in the commercialization of tonnage air separation plants. Oxygen, nitrogen and argon impact the quality, energy efficiency and environmental aspects of metals production. Cryogenic air separation processes have been used to supply most industrial requirements, however, newer technologies are available or under development to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's metallurgical processes. This paper reviews the technical features and state of development of adsorption, chemical, cryogenic and membrane technologies. The technologies are compared in terms of plant size, oxygen purity and pressure, nitrogen and argon co-production, product use pattern and back-up requirements. Computer control systems are described that optimize operation over varying load patterns and ambient conditions; substantially lowering energy consumption. IntroductionOxygen production totalled 390 billion cubic feet in 1987. Although current production is lower than the peak of 455 billion cubic feet reached in 1979, oxygen remains the fifth leading chemical product manufactured in the u.s. (1) Metals manufacturing and fabrication accounts for sixty percent of the oxygen consumed in the u.s. Oxygen use in the steel industry consists of air enrichment for conversion of iron ore, purification of the iron in basic oxygen or other furnaces, and for cutting and welding the finished steel product. Nonferrous ores are smelted in oxygen enriched atmospheres to reduce energy consumption and increase capture of sulfur compounds to meet environmental requirements. In the future oxygen usage is expected to become even more important in metals production as energy costs increase, environmental standards become more stringent, and as new coal based processes become commercialized. Oxygen usage per ton of metal in the new direct reduction processes can be up to ten times higher than traditional steel making."

In 2006 the Australian steel industry and CSIRO initiated an R&D program to reduce the industry’s net greenhouse emission by at least 50%. Given that most of the CO2 emissions in steel production occur during the reduction of iron ore to hot metal through use of coal and coke, a key focus of this program has been to substitute these with renewable carbon (charcoal) sourced from sustainable sources such as plantations of biomass species. Another key component of the program has been to recover the waste heat from molten slags and produce a by-product that could be substituted for Portland cement. This paper provides an overview of the low-emission Integrated Steelmaking Process, progress made over the past seven years and the program’s future direction which includes proposed demonstrations of the technologies developed including large scale piloting and full scale plant trials.

Resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology has been developed for recovery of gold. It is now time to look forward to the potential for application of the technology to other situations. Some cases have been identified and have merited preliminary testwork. Four examples, which illustrate the potential of RIP, are dealt with in this paper. These include removal of metal-cyanides from pulps, recovery of manganese that is difficult to wash from filter cakes, recovery of nickel from low grade pulps, and recovery of zinc from process residues. The discussion includes descriptions of the problems, factors that affect the choice of resin, and factors that will affect the economics of the process.

This paper presents results of laboratory and field optimization of a proprietary processes developed by FESI for the stabilization of heavy metal bearing wastes. The specific waste studies presented within the paper include foundry ash, aluminum sweat furnace ash and a heavy metal contaminated soil. The FESI process chemistry and engineered processes were found to be the most cost efficient demonstrated and available method of stabilizing heavy metals and highly successful in passing regulatory limits.

The Chelopech Copper/Gold Mine, located in west-central Bulgaria, has been in operation since 1953 producing a low-grade copper/gold concentrate containing up to six percent arsenic by weight. The penalties and restrictions imposed on smelting this concentrate, have seen the past operators of the mine strive to find a balance between achieving acceptable metal returns from the smelters and installing novel or unproven technologies in the face of changing political and economic climates. This paper documents the colourful history of the concentrate processing alternatives that have been investigated and implemented over the 45 year life of the Chelopech Mine, culminating in the high pressure oxidation option that is now the focus of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) presently being undertaken by GRD Minproc Limited. The fundamental chemistry of the preceding alternatives is outlined followed by a discussion as to why each was ultimately not employed. A detailed description of the technology proposed in the DFS is given including: pressure oxidation, arsenic fixation, SX/EW copper recovery, CIL gold recovery and AVR/SART cyanide/copper recovery processes. "One of the methods for waste treatment is composting during which as a result of controlled biological decomposition of organic waste in aerobic conditions harmless materials are received. Composting takes place in suitably designed premises which ensure the optimal conditions for biochemical decomposition of the waste. A usual way to process composting is the spreading of the waste on a base made from reinforced concrete.In the paper the phases and basic technical features of the process of composting, the requirements and properties of the base and the ways of protection of concrete base against corrosion are revealed. Technical decisions for a specific construction site in Bulgaria are shown and the advantage of achieving durability of the concrete constructions in the plant while achieving simultaneous environment protection from pollution is discussed.IntroductionComposting is the process of controlled biochemical decomposition of vegetable and animal organic waste in aerobic conditions as a result of which harmless materials are obtained. The latter have better stability and are rich in humus substances which are useful for agricultural crops and can be used for restoring the soil fertility [1, 2, 3, 4].In modern waste treatment plants a composting technology is adopted in which the waste is spread on a concrete base as piles with certain dimensions [1, 3]. These piles are periodically stirred or air is blown through them in order to ensure the quantity of oxygen required for the process of aerobic decomposition of the organic matter. The fluids and gases formed in the course of the composting are take away in order not to pollute the environment – air, water, and soils. For this purpose the base on which the waste is spread must satisfy certain requirements, and the gases must be taken away and rendered harmless in order to protect the atmospheric air from pollution. This paper discusses the need for protecting the concrete base from corrosion and characterizes the stages and main parameters of the composting process and the possibilities for primary and secondary protection of the concrete base from corrosion. Specific technical decisions applied in a composting facility in the area of the town of Plovdiv are presented."

In this paper, characteristic and kinetics of CO2 reaction with four different kinds of coke such as top-loading coke, dry quenching tamping coke, wet quenching tamping coke and semi-coke were investigated based on isothermal method. Electric resistance reduction furnace was used to heat the sample. Volume Model (VM) and Shrinking Core Model (SCM) were used to calculate the kinetic parameters and to contrast with the experimental results. The results showed that the Volumetric Model (VM) was much suitable for the reaction of top-loading coke, dry quenching tamping coke and wet quenching tamping coke, while Shrinking Core Model (SCM) was much suitable for semi-coke.

"Environmental protection is becoming over the years an increasingly significant problem of mankind. Up to the last decade the only way to make the domestic waste harmless in Bulgaria was deposition on uncontrolled landfills without undertaking actions for protection of the soils. This also caused pollution to spread into the surface and underground waters and that is why actions are now undertaken for remediation of contaminated soils. This is achieved by developing projects for the closing down of polluted sites. In the present paper some projects for closing down of polluted areas are discussed. The actual conditions are examined and project decisions for preventing the surface waters from penetrating into the waste are presented. In this way the pollution of the soil is stopped and the soils are gradually remediate.IntroductionSoil is the topmost layer of the earth crust. It consists of mineral particles, organic substances, water, air and living organisms and is an extremely complex and changing living environment. Soil is a non-renewable natural resource which is of considerable importance in a number of crucial processes (production of foods, storing, filtrating and turnover of many substances, including water, carbon and nitrogen). It also serves as a basis for human activities, shaping the landscape, ground on which cultural heritage is built, and source of raw materials. These functions of soil must be protected both because of their social and economic significance and from the point of view of environmental protection.The processes of erosion, loss of organic substances, compaction, salination and contamination contribute to the degrading of soils accompanied by a negative impact on human health, natural ecosystems and changes in climate, as well as on the economy. All these make it necessary to protect soils from contamination. Over the last years intensive work started in Bulgaria for the construction of controlled sanitary landfills for rendering municipal solid waste harmless. Pursuant to Bulgarian legislation, in these controlled sanitary landfills measures are undertaken for protecting the soils from contamination through appropriate project decisions – the filtration of the products from the biological decomposition of waste into the adjacent sites (soils) and, therefore, the contamination of the surface and underground waters is prevented. At the same time the purity of air is maintained, human health is protected and conditions are created for including the controlled sanitary landfills into the surrounding landscape."

Gas handling at Magma Copper company's, San Manuel smelter receives process gas from a flash .smelting furnace and four copper converters. The major gas handling equip11lent consists of four electrostatic precipitators and a sulfuric acid plant. Process ,vessels in gas handling are, typically confined, spaces. Lethal gases, mechanical and chemical hazards, and the difficulty of rescue, should an accident occur, makes this area a must in the safety plan. The presence': of hazardous chemicals and explosive gases in process' vessels and piping are of major concern when repairs' are required. Proper job procedures are critical to prevent injury during repairs. This includes plant employees and contractors who are likely to be unfamiliar with the hazards ,involved. The safe operation of a gas handling operation must include the functions of operations employees on a daily basis. This includes a safe working environment and involvement of all employees in the safety program. If an injury does occur quick medical response is critical to prevent serious injury. Medical responders must be adequately trained and prepared to treat the injured person without becoming victims' themselves. The methods used at Magma Copper Company to deal with these safety problems are the focus of this presentation.
