In today’s competitive dimensional stone business environment, use of available technology is critical to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage. Awareness of improvements in diamond cutting technology, operation planning/scheduling, and geotechnical data manipulation/implementation are the keys to success. This paper presents the modern techniques of limestone sawing and quarrying developed and adopted by Indiana Limestone Company, Inc.(ILCI).To fulfill the growing market demands, ILCI’s quarries are committed to deliver planned quantities of all type of stone blocks in a variety of different colors, sizes, and textures. This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. This paper presents a virtual prototype for the stress analysis of cable shovel components based on combination of flexible and rigid body approach. The general mechanical system of the cable shovel is modeled as a multi-body system with rigid and flexible bodies. The relevant theories applied for the dynamic model are described in terms of Lagrangian multi-body dynamics and finite element method. A virtual prototype of the cable shovel is built in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System (ADAMS) environment, which allows visualizing the motion of general mechanical system and analyzing the dynamic stress of structural components of the cable shovel. An example is given to perform dynamic stress of durability analysis for the boom and handle. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the cable shovel and also the critical high stress areas. Recently the operating philosophy at concentrators processing platinum bearing ores has started to move from a recovery dominated system to one in which the production of high grade concentrates at the expense of some recovery would provide greater benefits in the further upgrading of the platinum group minerals (PGM). The low grades usually obtained are associated with the presence of naturally floatable talcaceous gangue minerals in all PGM ores. Polysaccharide depressants such as guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used to improve the grades of the concentrates. Recent testwork has shown that the use of high depressant concentrations can prevent any naturally floatable gangue from reporting to the concentrate. The only gangue present in the concentrates would be due to its entrainment in the froth. Under these conditions much higher grades can be achieved. The sulphide minerals themselves, however, become susceptible to depression at high depressant concentrations. This work examines how the recovery of sulphide minerals in two Merensky ores was affected by the type and concentration of the collector in the presence of high depressant concentration (500 g/t) and that the response of the sulphide minerals was also dependent on the type of depressant used (guar or CMC).

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations reluted to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 3’% to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 1% sulfur.

Despite the current economic downturn that is now decimating iron ore production, Minnesota?s mining operators remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the industry. Reflecting this optimism, the development of several new mining projects continues in the state. The future of mining in Minnesota was the featured topic at the combined 82nd Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 70th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium. More than 500 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and equipment suppliers from the around the world, attended the meeting, which was held April 14 and 15, 2009, in Duluth, MN. The combined meeting featured a keynote session with three distinguished speakers plus a panel discussion by representatives from several of Minnesota?s taconite producers. The keynote speakers were Curtis Clark, president and chief operating officer, Behr Dolbear, who gave a presentation on the ?State of the Mining Industry.? Phil Newman, chief operating officer, CRU Strategies, spoke about challenges facing the mining industry and James A. Skurla, acting director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, discussed the importance of mining to northeastern Minnesota?s economy. The taconite producers panel discussion included Jonathan Holmes, vice president and operations manager, ArcelorMittal; Ed Latendresse, vice president and general manger, Hibbing Taconite; John Tuomi, vice president operations services, United Taconite and Mike Mliner, vice president and general manager, Northshore Mining. The mangers provided updates on their respective operation The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions on mining, processing, environmental and nonferrous mining. The sessions included technical papers that provided information on the status of a number of new mining projects in the state. The conference also offered a SME short course titled ?The basics of iron mining.? A tradeshow that featured about 100 companies and organizations offering products and services to Minnesota?s mining industry ran in conjunction to the conference. It was estimated that more than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, attended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years. The Minnesota Section of SME also held its annual business meeting during the conference.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

Amax Coal Industries Inc.'s Delta Mine is a medium-sized. high-sulfur coal producer that has lived up to the challenges posed by nearly six decades of a highly competitive domestic coal market. The mine now faces one of its biggest challenges - the same one staring at the dozens of other high-sulfur producers in the Midwest - the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The 59-year-old mine, located in the coal fields of southern Illinois, has remained one of the state's oldest continuously operating mines by rolling with the ups and downs of the coal market and by incorporating new technologies and innovative productivity improvements into its operation.

The HB 2500 hydraulic breaker attachment from Atlas Copco Construction Tools features Krupp percussion technology and a service weight of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs). This makes it ideal for demolition, tunneling, trenching, foundation work, rock mining and secondary breaking. Suitable for carriers in the 29-to 43-t (32-to 47-st) weight class, the HB 2500 accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 219 L/min (58 gpm) at 18 MPa (2,610 psi) of pressure, and delivers an impact rate of up to 550 blows per minute. The HB 2500 features PowerAdapt, a new system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier.

The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical model to describe the oxidation of cyanide with SO2as proposed in the Inco process. This research employed a direct method for measuring the change in cyanide concentration with respect to time as effected by varying concentrations of SO2, copper and pH. Developing this model may be applicable in determining optimum conditions in a process well known and used in the mining industry. It was determined that the reaction is first-order with respect to cyanide, SO2and [Cu+2].The reaction order is 0.15, or zeroth order with respect to [H+] at pH range from 8.0 to 9.5.The activation energy, Ea, is 21.6 kJ/mol. Frontier/Traylor is presently completing construction of twin tunnels for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon’s (Tri-Met) westside lightrail system. The tunnels are each 4,550 m (14,935 ft) in length and 6.48 m (21.29 ft) in diameter. The 1/3 of each tunnel was driven from the west portal using drill and blast methods and the remaining 2/3 was driven from the east portal using a TBM. The paper describes: The difficulties encountered by the TBM mining the weathered Columbia River Basalts. The execution of drill and blast work despite challenging ground conditions, stringent noise and vibrations specifications, and public relations problems. The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) operates two water-intakes in Lake Mead, located 20 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Severe drought has caused decline in lake level by 85 feet since 2000 and future declines are expected. SNWA will construct a third deep-water intake to ensure existing water system capacity. This paper describes expected construction challenges for the new project that consists of: an intake structure and tunnel beneath the lake, pumping station, pipeline to connect existing treatment facility, and interconnecting underground adits. The project will be completed in the year 2012 for total estimated cost of approximately $600 million.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) issues are very high profile currently in both Australian coal and metal mines and Australian states are generally moving to acknowledge and to broadly follow US 2008 final metal/non metal mine regulation limits of 0.2 mg/m3 submicron particulate matter, 0.16 mg/m3 total carbon particulate and 0.1 mg/m3 elemental carbon particulate. The real time DPM monitor is being developed on the base of the successful Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study has been to finalize the design of a DPM unit, to undertake comprehensive and internationally recognized laboratory testing to evaluate the new design and to undertake an underground series of tests to establish the robustness and reliability of the new approach. Under the project Thermo Fisher Scientific has undertaken structural changes to the PDM to convert it to a DPM real time monitoring underground instrument, the D-PDM. The Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Research Laboratories of NIOSH (the group that originally contracted for the PDM development) has undertaken laboratory ?calibration or verification? testing. A phase of Australian mine robustness and engineering testing has been undertaken to ensure the instrument can effectively assist mine management to handle this health issue. Tests have been undertaken at points of expected high atmospheric DPM such as during Longwall face moves, Development RAM car, Eimco and PJB usages. The paper discusses how the monitors have performed within the underground mine environment in evaluating DPM during the various phases of the production cycle. They have closely examined the influence of aspects of the mine ventilation system. Results have been compared to alternative industry pollutant measuring approaches. The outcome of the project gives the industry access to an enhanced tool for understanding the mine atmosphere in the presence of DPM. Real time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered in coal longwall face moves where various vehicles work or in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identifying of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground miners? exposure. Some outcomes of the ACARP project in this area will be discussed.

Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.
