"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. The Buick Concentrator is a highly automated operation which utilizes a process control system for continuous monitoring and control. The process control system development, installation, and application to the concentrator grinding and flotation circuits are presented in this paper. The design and implementation of analog field sensing instrumentation, a continuous on-stream X-ray analyzer, grinding and classfication circuit controls, and a recent digital process control system utilizing a centralized computer are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the project planning and installation of the digital control system including a presentation of future plans for continuing application of computer control.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

Over it’s more than 100-year history, the Kennecott operation has often been at the forefront of innovation; driven by the demands of the lower grade ore-body and the higher costs of operating in the US where wages are generally higher and regulation more restrictive. One way of reducing operating costs in c/lb is to increase the lbs produced at minimal cost. Despite the relatively coarse grind at Kennecott - about 30% >150μm, approximately 20% of the Cu lost to tail is liberated chalcopyrite in the <20μm fraction, and about 30%-40% in the <37μm fraction. In 2020 Kennecott undertook a detailed plant scale test of the magnetic aggregation technology to increase copper recovery by reducing fine copper losses. A paired statistical plant test of magnetic conditioning on one rougher line showed a 1.12% increase in Cu recovery to 97% statistical confidence. The next challenge, unforeseen at the start of the project, was the fabrication and transportation to site of the equipment for the three remaining rougher rows, during the severe supply-chain constraints of the Covid pandemic in 2021. This resulted in delays and unforeseen costs as world-wide transportation became chaotic, particularly transportation via west coast USA. Nevertheless, the project was completed and commissioned, with only minor delays and cost increases, due to a flexible approach to overcoming the hurdles encountered.

This paper describes development of a cost report that is descriptive, logically oriented, and concise. Since the costs involved relate to mining, this reporting technique could help bridge any possible communications gap between "mining men" and computer personnel, at the same time giving the computer-oriented mining individual information to assist him in his job performance. As computers become entrenched in the mining world, meaningful report assimilation becomes a major task. No one should be more capable of defining required results than the man requesting a report. If he is able to clearly state his needs and has researched his problem, it will be reflected in the computer output. During 1970, The Anaconda Company&apos;s Berkeley Pit Operation, at Butte, Montana, received many different computer-generated equipment cost reports. Up to thirty-six different components for each type (class) of pit equipment contributed cost data to the Berkeley Pit cost system files for both operating and repairs during current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods. This reporting approach was taken to facilitate analyzing this voluminous data. SUMMARY A Major Component Cost Analysis (Exhibits 6-A thru 6-C) developed by arranging the top ten operating and repair percentages (component cost divided by total cost) in descending order, and then accumulating these percentages to a possible one-hundred percent. While tabulating the operating and repair cost percentages by equipment unit number in the current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods, a frequency chart is constructed for each equipment

This paper presents numerical and experimen¬tal results dealing with the application of ferric ion oxidation of uranium in acidic media. Conclusions are derived from matching numerical results to experimental data taken on one-dimensional laboratory leaches using ore from a South Texas Coastal plain deposit. Since the numerical results can be made quite general, we are able to extract and quantify the effects of oxidant concentration, flow velocity, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, and competitive oxidant consumers (pyrite and molybdenite) on the experimental results. Our results suggest that the leaching of uranium is a mass transfer controlled while that of pyrite is kinetically controlled.

Since the late 60&apos;s, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70&apos;s. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

The main aim of this work is to evaluate whole-body vibration (WBV) of dozer operators based on three sitting postures (i.e., with 15° lean forward inclination posture, vertically erect posture with no inclination, and with 15° lean backward inclination posture) in Indian surface coal mines. A seat pad tri-axial accelerometer was used to collect WBV data from six dozer operators for three different sitting postures. Results showed that except for Dozer-1, 2, 4, and 5 operators during lean forward sitting posture and Dozer-4 operator during vertical erected posture, no other dozer operators have exceeded an exposure limit value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 in any of the considered sitting postures. Similarly, the vibration dose value (VDV) based on exposure action value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75 has surpassed for all the dozers. But no dozer operator has exceeded an exposure limit value of 21 m/s1.75. The outcome of the study infers that based on “above health guidance caution zone (HGCZ)” for daily vibration exposure, i.e., A(8) measurements, for the operator sitting in lean backward postures the vibration amplification was reduced by 32.89% less compared with lean forward posture and 16.23% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Similarly, based on VDV(8), the exposure to vibration for the lean backward posture was reduced by 33.34% when compared with lean forward posture and 17.11% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Based on the above observation, it is concluded that lean back inclination with a trunk flexion of 15° is a favorable sitting posture, as it exposes the dozer operators to minimum vibration.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

Fatigue in mining operations is a serious issue and a significant contributor to incidents and accidents. While mine operators are using or introducing new technology to monitor operator fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the subjective experience of fatigue and the use of fatigue monitoring technology. To investigate this issue, eight focus groups with a total of 44 operators of heavy haulage equipment working for two mining companies in the Mountain West of the USA participated in 1-h focus groups. The topic of the focus groups was the experience of operator fatigue and issues surrounding fatigue at the workplace. The results of the content analyses suggest that operators are well aware of the signs of fatigue, and that they understand the severity of these signs as well. In addition, they are aware of the effect of fatigue on driving performance and are using a wide range of methods to manage fatigue. Finally, based on participants’ assessment, current fatigue monitoring systems lack face validity and reliability and are perceived as not being effective. The results of this study emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective in the context of miner health and safety management. Only such a comprehensive perspective can result in improvements that are sustainable.

What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

When a takeup weight is offset to the side of a conveyor, a wire rope is commonly routed from the takeup weight through a series of sheaves to the takeup carriage. The friction developed from a series of wire rope sheaves can effect the actual belt tension at the make up carriage. Through real-mime testing the actual tension on a makeup carriage was recorded with data acquisition using an internally strain-gauged turnbuckle. The wire rope used to transfer the makeup weight to the makeup carriage was routed through a series of lubricated bronzed bushed sheaves. The tension on the makeup carriage was found to be as much as 26% higher than the weight of the makeup due to the friction in the sheaves. A detailed discussion of the testing and results will be made.

Recently a detailed study ?Minerals Planning Policies and Supply Practices in Europe? has been completed. The study, conducted on behalf of DG Enterprise, demonstrated that there are very few written down national minerals policies within European Union. Mineral policy elements are dispersed in many different documents and acts. The paper discusses the essential elements of minerals policies; particularly importance is placed in issues related to planning (land use planning, mineral development, etc.). A number of examples of successful and less successful mineral planning policy approaches are presented in other to support the idea of importance of comprehensive mineral policy. The main sources of information were the country reports of 26 European countries that are appendix of the study. We conclude that comprehensive written mineral policy that incorporates essential elements is crucial in order to achieve secure minerals supply.
